I have NEVER been more disappointed in a restaurant! I looked online to see which restaurants in Knoxville served Peking Duck. Plum Tree (cleverly) highlighted theirs. It was advertised as $40 for duck, but I paid $52.50. Overcooked, rubbery, fat not rendered, no crispy skin, a whole duck had only 4 pancakes, 2 tablespoons plum sauce, no spring onions, but cucumber! A W F U L. I could NOT eat. read more

Came here to grab takeout to take back to our hotel. Ordered drunken noodles, chicken chop suey, and steamed vegetable potstickers. Came with a side of fried rice. Food was pretty good. Noodles were spicy with a ton of chicken. Chop suey was very flavourful. I'm not a fan because it's usually bland but my husband loves the stuff. This was pretty good. Service was quick. And the girl serving us was helpful. Was a little happy I wasn't eating in. It was a little dirty with a built in couch in the dining area stacked with boxes and supplies. An elderly couple came in while I was waiting for my food. The had a bottle of sangria and a bottle of red wine and a large bowl of mussels. Apparently the chef will cook your mussels for you. Good to know. I would probably go back if I lived in the area, but wouldn't make a point if it my next trip through. read more

The building is definitely old and has not been updated for quite some time but don't let the appearance fool you. The kitchen is very clean from what I could see and the food was very good. Our server was friendly and attentive and we had zero problems I would definitely go again, I got the hot and sour soup which I cohost to take a photo of but it was excellent what you want from a hot and sour. Then we had the sesame chicken and the garlic chicken, they were both very good but I especially liked the sauce on the garlic chicken and the fact that it's a non breaded chicken dish. The only down side was the fried rice that came with the meal had very little to it. There was plenty of rice just not much to the actual rice itself, I think next time I go I will try ordering a separate rice dish and see if I get better results read more

I hate to say it, but I won't be back. I always root for local places, hole-in-the-wall finds, but my dinner tonight makes me question how this place stays in business. This was my second visit to Plum Tree, and I came in on a rainy Thursday evening and ordered 4 entrees and 3 appetizers to go. I was the only patron in the building. My wait wasn't all that long, but just a moment after the lady (apparently the only one working in the entire restaurant) walked into the kitchen, a couple entered the waiting area. And wait they did. They sat across from me the whole 15 minutes or so that the one employee was preparing my order. I was impressed with their faith that someone was eventually going to help them, and I was surprised that when the lady finally came out with my order and asked them what they needed, she offered no apology or even a friendly greeting. The chicken in my Moo Goo Gai Pan was undercooked, and the egg rolls were just short of being crispy. The crab rangoon was delicious, but the other three entrees we ordered tasted like one of those frozen stir fry kits from the grocery store. For almost $90, this was a huge disappointment. read more

I had the Singapore noodles they were excellent the noodles were very thin and the sauce had a curry after taste it was a unique flavor I never had before. The building is not the most elaborate structure, but it does have a homey feel inside. * I came here recently and ordered shrimp with lobster sauce, fried rice, and hot & sour soup. The soup is always good. It's not really hot (spicy) but it is good. The shrimp with lobster sauce is just average. The diced vegetables taste like they're from a frozen bag and the sauce is just ok. Not really sure that I can say it taste like lobster sauce. The fried rice was blah...but the taste was better with a little lobster sauce and a bit of soy sauce. * I'm probably a little bias and overrating the place since I ate it so much in school. Sunday ... that is the day to go to Plum Tree. A married couple from Laos bought this restaurant a little over a year ago and have given it much more flavor than in the past. The Pho, which is a Vietnamese noodle soup, is prepared with noodles, herbs (such as cilantro and basil), and served with beef broth and is a great choice. The Pho is typically an entree style soup, so be careful not to over order. The sweet basil shrimp and the schezuan chicken are other good choices for entrees here. However, note to self that the schezuan is not visually stimulating, but tastes quite good. They also have sweet tea, which is very refreshing! The only thing that I would not order is green curry. The sauce they had for green curry looked more like a watered down pea soup, rather than the creamy green curry it should be. Definitely go visit Plum Tree it is inexpensive and good! read more

We decided to have some local Chinese takeout last night and were not disappointed. I started with the hot and sour soup. It was flavored very well and was some of the best I have ever had. For my entree I got the General Tso Chicken and it was an amazing choice. The chicken was flavored perfectly and I honestly think this was the best General Tso Chicken that I have ever had! This restaurant is an overlooked gem. The Malaysian dishes are great and uncommon locally. Go for the food, not for the decor.

Had a so so experience here. Met a friend for lunch and since neither of us had been here before we got a few different things to try. We got the crab rangoons, which came with 4 in the triangle shape (not a fan when they do them like this, I prefer the pouches, but this is just my preference), the filling is delicious though! It was savory with a good crab flavor and slightly sweet, the duck sauce on the table was ok, it was really watery and didn't have much flavor. I got the General Tao's chicken with fried rice and Hot & Sour soup, she got the Sesame Shrimp with fried rice and an Egg roll. I read the menu wrong and thought I got an egg roll and soup, so when they brought her egg roll and soup, I added an egg roll to mine. The soup wasn't good to me, when I had her try it she didn't like it either, it reminded us of egg drop soup with some brown sauce added and a few veggies. I ended up only eating 4 bites of it, so I decided to ask our waitress if I could just switch out the soup for eggroll since I didn't like it or eat hardly any of it. She wasn't sure so she went and asked and came back saying they would even though you could tell she wasn't happy about it. The eggroll was ok, it was a good size and was nice and crispy, the filling didn't have much flavor. When the entrees came out they were a good size for a lunch portion. The General Tao's was really good and their sauce had good flavor. The fried rice was ok (I really miss FL fried rice with veggies, up here they should call it Soy Sauce white rice with a smidge of egg in it). She really liked her Sesame Shrimp and sauce and when I tasted the sauce it was good. The Shrimps we're actually Jumbo's so that was a nice surprise she said. For dessert we tried the fried donuts and they were delicious. They are a good size and covered in suger. Overall the food was ok. The waitress was ok. Our dislikes were having to ask for refills on our drinks and the cups being full of ice. I normally never get refills and had to have mine refilled 3 times because of all the ice and each refill she just added more. The total for everything was about $34, with tip it came to $39. read more

Updated: After seven years of living in Knoxville, Plum Tree remains one of my go-to places for delicious Chinese takeout. They have kept their quality up during These Trying Times and are always accurate when estimating a pickup time. It seems like the teenage kids of the owners have taken over phone orders and manning the drive-through pickup window, and they are always such a pleasure to interact with. They have kept their dining room closed, which honestly is not a problem for me. They have posted that they'll be paring down their expansive menu and raising prices a bit, but I am happy to pay a little more and help them stay afloat. read more

We ordered Chinese this evening as we have in the distant past and as in the past expected it to be good. IT WASN'T! While my Moo Goo Gai Pai was edible, the Moushu pork was totally uneatable. We have had this in the past from other places before, and KNOW how it's supposed to be prepared and tonight it was simply tasteless. It didn't even look as though it had been fixed correctly. It was so bad only the rice was able to be eaten. After spending this kind of money for what in the past has been delicious food, this was truly disappointing. If they had still been open by the time we started trying to eat this, I would have brought it back for a refund. I would truly suggest you search elsewhere to go for Chinese food. Get the egg drop when you have a cold and you will instantly be healed. They make everything by scratch including the egg rolls and crab rangoons. Oh, Plum Tree. I love this place. The outside of the building is pretty rough but just don't look too closely on your way in. Inside, you'll find a tiny hall with booths that go to the ceiling. Not fancy at all but really cozy. I go here for lunch once a week and always get the green curry with veggies. Perfect spice level for me. Their menu is HUGE and not at all limited to Chinese food...I wish I could speak to more of it in this review but I can't stop ordering the green curry. Cozy place with good food and lots of options. They charge 21.95 for Peking duck, it was so dried out and old and when I mentioned it the waitress dismissed my complaint and we were stuck paying full price. The BBQ pork also isn't traditional Chinese style it's chunks of dried out over sauced pork. So sad we wasted 50 dollars here read more

Excellent Chinese, Thai and Malaysian food. This was some of the best oriental food I have had in the u.s.....I have been to China, Thailand and Malaysia. The Malaysian food is a different style than I have had at other Malaysian restaurants in the u.s....very tasty. Their Thai food is perfectly seasoned. They did not ask how spicy to make the food...good for them! I think food should be served as it was intended to be spiced.
