***Update: As you can see, the owner has decided to reply unprofessionally to my review, rather than reaching out to solve the issue. I'll let his response to my concerns speak for itself. My family has been coming to this restaurant for years, which makes this experience not just disappointing, but very upsetting. We placed a pickup order totaling over $100. When I arrived, I was told our order had been given to another customer. Instead of immediately apologizing and remaking the food, the front desk employee spent several minutes trying to find the order, then called the customer who took it and asked him to come back with the food so it could be given to me. This is an obvious food safety issue. Once food leaves a restaurant, it should never be redistributed. When I calmly said I was not comfortable taking food that had already gone to someone else's home, the employee argued with me extensively, insisting it hadn't been touched. I had to repeatedly ask for the food to be remade. When the other customer returned, the employee made a pointed comment that the food would be thrown away "because we have to remake it," while looking directly at me. This felt accusatory, uncomfortable, and inappropriate, especially since the mistake was not mine. After waiting over 40 additional minutes, I was still charged the full amount. When I politely asked whether there would be any consideration for the delay, I was told, "No, we already lost money on you." Being spoken to that way after showing patience and understanding was shocking and deeply unprofessional. Unfortunately, the situation did not end there. When we later called, the same employee refused to provide a manager or owner's contact information, and refused to let us speak with a manager. We asked the employee for her name and she replied "What's YOUR name and what's your problem?" That comment alone reflects a serious lack of professionalism. We emailed management twice to address what happened and have received no response. Mistakes happen, but what is unacceptable is arguing with customers about food safety, making them feel blamed for expecting safe food, speaking to them disrespectfully, and then ignoring follow-up. Management should take this feedback seriously, because this experience reflects poorly on their business. We are very sad to no longer be customers of PNS after many years of enjoying their food. read more

Amazing Thai food, very much worth checking out! I got takeout from here recently and needed some Tom Yum soup, maybe my favorite part of Thai food. To their credit, the prices are very reasonable, and the quality is excellent! The Tom Yum soup here is mind-blowing in terms of flavor. Not a lot is customizable, in terms of proteins or heat. It is a certain level of spiciness and has a few tasty pieces of shrimp floating in it (not to mention straw mushrooms). But the flavor is perfection! It is everything you want in Tom Yum soup. It is spicy, but a nice "middle of the road," where it isn't bland in any way, but it's not going to burn your entire mouth. Less successful is the pad see ew, which was so sweet, it almost tasted like dessert noodles! The tofu especially, despite a good texture, almost tasted like candy, but in a very out of place sort of way. Despite a main course misfire, the soup here is so incredible that I could not imagine going lower than 4 stars. I would love to try more items...and try the soup again :D read more

Came to yet another place for pho and noodle soup, this time in Northfield in a strip mall area. It's kind of hidden a bit. PNS Noodle Shop is a way back from the road so it can be hard to see if you don't know it's there. Helps make it a little less busy since many don't know about it. The main thing is noodles, but they also have rice. At lunch it wasn't busy. In fact, we were the only customers when we came in. The service was very fast, and it all came out in a few minutes. Even so, it wasn't like it tasted fake like out of a can. I got the Vegetable Soup. It's $11 for a lot of this. Good vegetarian choice. This was rice noodles in vegetarian broth with cilantro, scallions, and tofu. She had the Pad Thai, a classic. This was far from the best but one she liked enough to eat it all though. Have to look hard for this place to find it. It's located close to the strip mall with the pizza place. This is a good choice for anyone who likes noodles or looking for something for vegans or vegetarians. read more

We used to order from PNS all the time and then somehow forgot about it, but recently have been keeping them busy. It's one of the few restaurants that all 3 of my kids can agree on when it comes to delivery. The pad thai, edaname, chicken satay and plain rice noodles seem to be their personal favorites. I've tried many items on the menu as well and have enjoyed all of the above + their gyoza. It's tasty, reasonably priced and can also always count on a fast delivery. I have been going to PNS for several years, especially b/c they offer gluten-less customization. Unfortunately, now 3 or 4 separate times we have received food that was not what we ordered - meaning we ordered gluten-free fried rice w/o soy sauce (which they offer on their menu), and get home with our order only to find out it has soy sauce in it. One of the times I called to ask if it might be gluten-free soy sauce, which they said it was. Based on my daughter's intestinal reaction, it most definitely was not. They flat out lied. If it happened once, I could consider it an error or miscommunication. Now that it has happened multiple times, we can no longer patronize a place we used to like and would caution others with gluten sensitivities to avoid this place as well. Solid Thai place. Portions are huge. Pad Thai is more Americanized so you should expect that if you order. Spicy noodle is great. Really most of the dishes on the menu that I've had are very good and quite sizable portions. Crab rangoon is great. I honestly didn't know Thai food could be this bad. I've had plenty of cheap Thai in my life (good thai, too) and my expectations were low - this place was exceedingly poor. The spicy beef salad, which is typically a thinly slice limey charred beef, was like slow cooked pot roast on a pile of cabbage. As soon as I saw it I knew we were in trouble. The hot pepper noodles were undercooked and tiny noodle chunks, no ribbons of noodles. Curry was mostly chopped tomatoes. We were all home sick and just craving some Thai noodles - unfortunately this was truly inedible and ended up in the trash. It also arrived cold which is weird as our delivery driver was very prompt - almost like the food wasn't hot when they put it in containers. And the Lard Nar was really sweet for some reason. But the hot sauce they provide helps everything. What happened to the old Penny's Noodle Shop??? The original that started in Chicago on Roscoe Ave and on Diversey Avenue. I don't know if the ownership changed hands or what but this place is not the same and it's truly sad. Penny's Noodle Shop used to be so popular in the city and this one in Northfield used to be pretty much the same as the downtown locations. Now they've changed their menu and the dishes that were on the old menu are not the same. Flavor and freshness is lacking and whatever seasoning they are doing tastes off. I've dined in and ordered delivery and it's been overall poor. Don't waste your time ordering from here thinking you're going to get the old Penny's because sadly that's no longer here. We came here because I had a pad thai craving... Penny cured it! But not necessarily in a good way. I actually really didn't like Penny's pad thai-- it was way too dry, too flavorless, didn't have enough peanuts or enough egg... Just not good. The hot pepper noodles, on the other hand, are phenomenal. Absolutely unbelievable and craveable. Spicy without scorching your entire esophagus, flavorful and chewy and just absolutely wonderful. Pretty alright Thai place close by with good service. I got the vietnamese spring rolls, chicken satay, tom yum soup, wonton soup, pepper beef, and 5 pepper shrimp. The spring rolls were delicious, fresh, light, and the sauce was delicious. Chicken satay was seasoned well, had great spice and the peanut sauce was excellent. The tom yum soup was very good and spicy as well, and the shrimp in it were cooked perfectly along with mushrooms and pieces of ginger and lemongrass. The wonton soup was absolutely perfect. Nothing bad to say about it at all! The flavor was beyond exceptional and it was delicious. The broth was amazing. Amazing. It was so flavorful and addictive. The combination of the shrimp and pork with the spinach and the light flavorful wontons were soooo good. So good. There aren't enough words to describe how good it was. The pepper steak had good flavor, nothing exceptional, some of the pieces of steak were a bit tough. The 5 pepper shrimp was my least favorite thing I got. It was lacking flavor, just not much going on with it. Not a great balance of flavors in it or anything like that. Good quick place to check out if you like thai food. We wanted to order in something different and were pleasantly surprised tonight. Usually stir fry makes me feel heavy and gross...this was wonderful. It was not overly salty (perhaps why some say bland) or greasy but the vegetables were fresh, the proteins well flavored and the portions generous. We ate there at lunch for the second time after 6 months. Last time, I would just give it two stars but today was definitely a 4 stars so I set in the middle. This is a cozy place with lots of windows which really brighten the whole restaurant up. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Last time, I ordered BBQ pork noodle soup which turned out to be a bad choice. The BBQ pork was dry and tasted stale. The soup was too salty. Well, I realized I should not expect a great Chinese noodle soup from a Thai place. My bad. Today, I ordered Red Curry with Tofu which tasted just right. There was enough creamy sauce to mix with the brown rice and it was not too sweet or too salty. The tofu was lightly fried outside so it was soft and tasty. We parked on the side of the street. My favorite Asian spot in the north burbs! The food tastes so fresh, is made with high quality ingredients, not greasy at all, good portion sizes & consistently great! I recommend the chicken satay- it's big pieces of chicken in a unique marinade- it's unlike any chicken satay I've had. The peanut sauce that comes with is phenomenal- I would recommend extra if you like to heavily dip your chicken! Very mediocre food at best, although the service was quick. The Crispy Rolls had no flavor. The Chicken Satay had decent flavor from the peanut sauce, but the meat was on the dry side. The Sautéed Chicken Noodles were a failure -- dry, flavorless dark meat chicken from some freezer bag and heavy sweetness to the thin sauce lurking under the rice noodles. The Egg Noodles with BBQ Pork were better, with flavorful pork (with that ubiquitous red food coloring) but blah otherwise. Stir Fried Cabbage with Tomato was a surprising finish -- rather like vegetarian mu shu with decent flavor and fresh tomatoes. We won't be going back however -- more than half the dinner went into the trash. read more

Came to this place for dinner with my girlfriend before a date at the Botanic Garden nearby. It's a lowkey and inconspicuous restaurant, but a hidden gem. My girlfriend and I shared the Pad Se Eu and a beef noodle dish and both were delicious and savory. Portioning is very important for me, and I'm happy to say that quantity-wise, both dishes were great even when shared between the two of us. I also had a thai iced coffee for myself which was sweeter than I was used to, but still delectable. The service was fantastic too, there was just one server working the front but he was incredibly friendly and always came to check on us, refill waters, and make sure we had everything we needed. So I remember this place when it first opened up. It was owned by the same people as Wrigleyville and wicker park locations. I LOVED this place. I went there for the first time in a year, and I was so unbelievably disappointed in the quality of food. I could even tell the shape of the crab Rangoon had changed. I ordered pad se ewe with beef and tofu, pad se ewe with chicken, pad Thai with beef and tofu, and crab Rangoon. Both of the pad se ewes seriously lacked flavor from what I remembered. The pad Thai was dry but the peanut sauce kind of saved it. Again the Crab Rangoon was a completely different shape which signaled a red flag, and on top of it, it completely lacked in flavor. There is gem of a Thai restaurant hidden in Northfield you must be looking for it to find it. It is located in a dark corner at 320 Happ Rd. It is not very large and appears to do as much take away business as sit down. The service is outstanding and the aromas coming from the kitchen for tells of the tasty morsels you will soon be enjoying. On this visit we started with the Vietnamese Spring Rolls. (Lettuce,noodles, sprouts and green onions wrapped in rice paper) and then dipped in peanut sauce. Very light and a great start to our meal. The entrees for tonight was Thai Raviolis for both of us. ( Homemade Shrimp&Pirk dumplings served with BBQPork) Rarely do we break the rule of both ordering the same thing but dang this is one great dish and with a splash of either the dark or red hot sauce and well you can't go wrong. My favorite noodle shop. Love their spicy hot noodles. I usually have them with the tofu but they are also good with the shrimp. Another favorite lunch is a bowl of the Tom Ka Kai soup and an order of the crispy rolls. Unfortunately on my most recent visit the soup had to be sent back to be warmed up. What a crock ! First time and last time, for this location. Carried-out 2 orders of Pad Thai, and an order of Japanese Gyosa. This meal was a total disappointment. BOTH the Pad Thai and the Gyosa, were foul tasting, ugly, terrible. It was like, someone emptied a bottle of Soy Sauce, on the noodles. It would appear, ownership has expanded beyond their ability, to control their product. The crew at this location needs retraining, at the Fullerton Ave location. We've have visted their Fullerton and Sheffield Locations, many times. IT'S ALWAYS outstanding. After sharing our experience with friends, I come to find out, their views of the Northfield location, are pretty much the same. read more
