Got the Shrimp PoBoy. Very mediocre. The shrimp was relatively bland, and wasn't fully deveined. It was just lacking the seasoning. And to top it off the place had an old woody smell like a dive bar. Such a great and delicious find! The service here was top-notch. And the food, amazing! We ordered the fried okra, jambalaya (chicken/andouille), gumbo, and a couple of pieces of fried chicken. The okra was a great start to this great meal. It came with a jalapeño sauce that had just the right kick. The gumbo was tasty, although I would've served it with a bit more rice. But the gumbo and fried chicken hit it out of the park! Both were just so tasty and seasoned just right. They gave us a habanero based hot sauce to go with the chicken, but the chicken was so juicy and crispy on the outside and just so flavorful that it didn't need anything extra to make it better. We devoured every single one of our dish. We loved it so much, we're already thinking of making a special trip to Portrero Hill just to eat another meal here. read more

If you're struck by déjà vu upon crossing PoBoys Kitchen's threshold, perhaps you've dined with the former occupant, Papito. The intimate layout hasn't changed with its handful of outdoor & indoor tables & about the same number of bar seats. It doesn't take many diners to fill up the space. The fried items, Cajun Fried Okra ($9) & shrimp in the PoBoy Sandwich, had different batters, both tasty & nicely browned. Although if you're looking for a generously stuffed sandwich, this one might leave you literally wanting more. Decent, run-of-the-mill Chicken & Andouille Jambalaya ($25.) Conversely, the gravy in the Shrimp & Grits ($26) was one of the most flavorful I've had despite its thin consistency. If I can be nit-picky, the andouille was overcooked & the shrimp needed a better sear, but the Shrimp & Grits was the winning dish for me, just the same. Really 4.5 I've been meaning to try this place for a bit and I'm sorry I waited so long! Came for lunch and we got fish and chips and a shrimp po'boy with beignets for dessert. It was a LOT of delicious food!! The shrimp po'boy came on really good bread (maybe acme?) and was stuffed with giant shrimp which actually tasted like shrimp. No remoulade but I didn't miss that at all because all of the remoulade flavors were there. This is a great sandwich po'boy people! Fish and chips came with 2 giant pieces of perfectly cooked fish, slaw and hand cut fries. Yum. Then beignet...a lot and they could have been slightly yeastier...but I'm just being picky. Service was really nice, the venue is small and charming, and the bar is cute if you're going to sit inside. If you want to sit outside they have heat lamps which work pretty well. Definitely one of the best creole restaurants in the bay, and probably the best one in SF in my opinion. The selection was great, I couldn't decide what to order so I ordered everything: fried chicken plate with collard greens & mashed potatoes, chicken sandwich, soft shell crab, fried okra, and mini cornbread. The BEST fried chicken I've had. Def gotta try the chicken. My partner loved the sea food gumbo as well. He recommends that as well. The beignets were really good too. Corn bread was a little dry? Poboys serves up Cajun soul food in a quaint and cozy, colorful restaurant in Potrero Hill. A warm welcome greeted me as I entered, and I sat down at one of their colorful tables surrounded by pops of color, and the aromas of deliciousness. I can't go to a soul food restaurant without ordering okra, so I got that, and boy was I pleased. These tasty little crunchy morsels came with a side of jalapeño aioli, and I don't normally like aioli, but this one was a hit. Next I opted for the fried chicken plate with mashed potatoes and gravy and collard greens. Whatever they batter that chicken with should be patented, it's seriously good. The whole meal came out hot and flavorful. It's a big plate of food so I could have split all this with another person and been satisfied. Now I have another meal to look forward to at home. I forgot to take pictures but I ordered a seafood and sausage Jambalaya and my friend ordered fried chicken with collard greens and mashed potatoes. My jambalaya ($30) was delicious. They give you a large portion with shrimp, fish, mussels, clams and andouille sausage. They gave an option for a sauce with the fried chicken ($23). It was also a large portion. Was in the area for a meeting and decided to stop here for lunch. It was very quiet when I walked in, but I can totally see this placing bustling for dinner. Very charming interior, not a lot of seating though. I ordered the shrimp and grits and cornbread since. Both were very delicious! Shrimp was cooked perfectly. Best creole food!! I dream of every time I'm in the city just to stop by for lunch. I had it for the first time last year and we chose to come back for a little lunch on Valentine's Day this year. Easily the best thing to order is the chicken and waffles. The chicken is juicy and not greasy and the waffles are fluffy and full of sugar pearls. The whipped cream with it pairs perfectly, definitely make sure to order extra. The gumbo, jambalaya, fried okra and shrimp and grits are always a good choice. The staff are very kind and attentive. Went to Po boy kitchen for lunch recently. The food was just meh, that's the best way I can put it. The cornbread, Mac and cheese, greens were all lackluster. The shrimp Po boy was ok, but the batter on the shrimp fell right off when biting into it. A giant indicator that the shrimp was precooked or frozen. I don't think I really need to say a lot more. Went to this spot on a work lunch. Received a friendly greeting inside from our server. I ordered fish and chips, my coworker got the fried chicken sandwich. Stumbled upon this place by accident, but sure happy I discovered it. The best okra I have eaten and I'm from the south so had it all my life. The seasonings were delicious and unique- fresh cut parsley is put on it when served, and the side of remoulade is a great edition. The shrimp po'boy sandwich is lovely- crispy battered shrimp with amazing seasoned fries. Also liked the mac n cheese and my son loved the fish n chips. Coleslaw is also killer. From the deadpan funny waiter to the fruit-enhanced "Swamp Tea," this fun cafe we wandered into excelled. We were pleasantly surprised at how the food tasted better than many of the options we tried last year during a full week in New Orleans(!). Our lunch bunch of 3 highly recommend the cajun fried okra, the alligator (or any!) jambalaya, and the crispy fish or shrimp po'boy on baguette. Portions are generous, and we had leftover jambalaya. Sadly, we were too stuffed for dessert. This is the only photo I took since when the food arrived, we all forgot to take pictures. We dove in! When three customers left before our food came out, we asked to move indoors and the waitress quickly cleaned the tables so we could move inside. We randomly decided to stop by this cute little restaurant for a very late lunch/early dinner one Sunday upon a recommendation from a friend. We are so glad we did. We shared a shrimp po'boy sandwich with fries and an order of jambalaya and both were outstanding. The jambalaya especially was super flavorful and fresh but the po' boy was also really delicious. Can't go wrong with either option. Portions are quite large and had we not had other plans afterwards we would have been fine with taking half home. Instead we finished everything and were just stupidly full for the rest of the night. It was totally worth it. I ordered a fish po boy sandwich and the big bowl of gumbo. The sandwich was good and it came with French fries which were good too. The gumbo was disappointing with hardly any meat, mostly okra in it. It was basically one small scoop of rice and rue. No seafood at all, no crab or shrimp. The place is not big with only 4 tables and a counter with seats. Only one lady taking orders and serving food. She was very nice. I might go back to try the shrimp po boy if I'm in the area. We got the jambalaya, shrimp and grits, and their chicken combo, and if you're looking for Southern food in the Bay, I think you've found your spot. Small place, on a cold night, any heat is lost through the front door every time it opens, but it's a colorful setting and easy-going. Lots of Spanish convos in the kitchen, TV playing an old black and white movie (not sure what it is), and a couple having a large dinner on the small bright floral covered tables. Ordered Angus Burger and the good ol' fried okra to go. Sigh- prices have gone up for eating out after COVID - I'm sure I would have paid 25-50-% less but I want places to stay open and give reasons to g et out of the home! Forked over $30 for the two items. ***** Munched on the okra while stuck on the Bay Bridge evening commute - almost forgot to take a photo of it and got a shot of half of what was left. In 30 minutes, got home and one bite was left. Good timing! The cornbread coating was crispy, but thin, and so a lot of of it fell off of the okra, but it was tasty. Nice little hits of salt every now and then. The Angus Berger was amazing and I dove into it forget again to take a picture of the before and so the shots you get will be of two bites taken out of it, which was really difficult because the burger is really huge! I asked for a medium rare and it's a little bit more toward medium, but it was fine. Very tasty and had pickles along with lettuce and tomatoes and red onions. Accompanying it was the side of fries, which were OK but maybe they would've been better if I warm them up. Included were two sauces, which were perfect for both the burger and the fries. This is a small southern restaurant that has indoor and outdoor dining. You also have a choice of eating at the counter or at a table, which we chose the later. Our server was very nice giving us some recommendations, letting us sample a drink we were curious about, supplementing our order that wasn't satisfying, and boxing our food. From the recommendations, we ordered the Bucket 'O' Chicken, Shrimp Po'Boy, Gumbo, Mashed Potatoes & Gravey, Corn Bread, Fried Okra, and Beignets, as well as Hurricane and Swamp Water Iced Tea. The Bucket 'O' Chicken had ten pieces of house special battered Fried Chicken. The Fried Chicken was tender and juicy with crunchy Skin on the outside. However the Popcorn that was with the Chicken was stale. The Shrimp Po'Boy The Gumbo was very meh too. It was very bland and didn't have a lot of flavor you usually expect from Gumbo. It was also very watery. Needed more rue. Thankfully, our server let us substitute the Gumbo for the Chicken Jambalaya that was a lot better. The Jambalaya had more spice to it and the Chicken that came with it was nice and moist, but I have still had better Jambalaya. The Mashed Potatoes were okay. Needed some more flavor. But was pretty creamy. The Corn Bread was meh. Very bland and dry. In fact, I like the Trader Joe's boxed Corn Bread more. The Fried Okra was the best of the sides. They were nice and crunchy on the outside while tender and not slimy in the inside, but there was nothing special in terms of taste. Wish that it has a little kick to them or something to make it more tastier. The Beignets were also a disappointment. They were very heavy and kind of hard compared to other Beignets that are fluffy. As for the drinks, the Hurricane drink was thankfully wasn't too sweet like I have had at some places, but wish that it had a little more alcohol taste. The Swamp Water Iced Tea was thankfully not too sweet and was a little cirtrusy. Overall, the food was meh. The saving grace was the Jambalaya and service. We were able to find free street parking nearby on a Sunday afternoon. We initially sat outside, because it was sunny, but moved inside before placing our order because it was slightly chilly. It's a cute little restaurant with beautiful colors and a cozy atmosphere. The restroom was large and clean! Now for the food: Everything was delicious! The wait wasn't long either. My swamp iced tea wasn't too sweet which I surprisingly enjoyed! I usually like super sweet tea, but this tea with a citrus flavor was refreshing! The fried okra was addictive! Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside without a slimy taste. Loved it! The mini cornbread wasn't sweet but moist, and actually tasted good with the strawberry jam even though I'm used to eating it with butter and honey. The shrimp and grits dish included Andouille sausage and was very flavorful! Although it had a little kick to it, and my tummy can't handle spicy food anymore, I still enjoyed it immensely! Chicken came out so hot and fresh, and all of their sides are just...! 10/10. I feel like nothing was too salty or sweet, justttttt right. They don't overdo it with oil. Seafood jambalaya ($28) can get a bit fishy but they put so much seafood, I can't complain! I'd definitely order their chicken combo plate ($22).
