I'm rounding up on this one - truly want to support a little local-owned joint, but the service was slow and the food could've been better. In particular, I ordered the: "Fried Chicken Bowl $15.00 Deliciously Crispy Fried Chicken over your choice of hot stone-ground grits or creamy mashed potatoes." I asked the server what chicken to get, and she said the boneless breast so I went with that, and asked for half grits and half mashed. I also added a side of mushroom gravy for $1.50. Yes, I'm a little high maintenance apparently. The mushroom gravy was the highlight here - SO GOOD. The grits were also fabulous, and the mash was good too. The chicken however, was so thin and dried out and chewy. Boo. :( read more

The food was okay, nothing special in my opinion. I had the combo with the 2pc chicken and waffles. The chicken was very crunchy, but there wasn't much seasoning. The mac and cheese had a good taste but it was a bit too liquidy for my preference. The catfish taco was decent. Our waitress was kind, but it took a bit of time to get her attention. I think she was the only one working so that isn't on her. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back honestly, but if you're in the area it's not bad. read more

It's a very charming venue (really you could believe you're in New Orleans) and has a giant menu. There is likely something here you want to eat if you are a fan of southern food (which I am!) Parking can be dicey but it's at least possible. The T-line might be a good option though.... I got a huge portion of mashed potatoes with corn and pulled pork and a side of tiny corn muffins. It was easily enough for two. I would have given 5 stars except that the pork was a bit too salty for me...and I like salt. Too Good To Go order. About $6. Order ahead of time for pickup next door at Victory Hall between 8:45-9pm. As with mst Too Good To Go orders, what you get tends to be a surprise. Arrived and was greeted by a friendly bartender and I think the manager. Informed them I was picking up for Too Good To Go, which they also already guessed. Took a seat for a few minutes while they packed up the order. The order I believe I got was the BBQ pulled pork bowl. Retails $15 so basically half off. Came in a to go container that was hefty. 60% grits, 40% slow roasted BBQ pulled pork so a really solid ratio. Flavorful grits and I really liked the rich flavorful of the BBQ sauce. For only about $6, definitely worth it read more

Little Skillet is tucked away inside an alley, so it's definitely one of those "if you know, you know" spots. It's easy to miss if you aren't looking for it, but once you step inside, the space is actually quite nice and spacious with a full bar. You can order via a QR code at the table or with the server, but we chose to order with our server and she was friendly. No flavor like come I can do better at home. The fish po boy was ok but smelled of cleaning products and tasted bland needed hot sauce , seasoning & some aioli or something to round it out. Was super bummed. The blackened shrimp were good had some nice char/ season in them but again were barely warm. Could not believe we paid 65$ for this meal. I will not recommend or return based on food. The service was absent since they had an private party they were attending to that and the bar. Walking back to our car after Opening Day, we stumbled onto this spot by pure luck -- and it ended up being exactly what we didn't know we needed. From the second you walk in, it's a full-on vibe. The music is loud, people are dancing, drinks are flowing -- it feels like the after-party to the game. We had a pretty large group, but our server handled it with patience and ease, which made the experience even better. My husband and I kept it simple and shared the boneless wings and mac and cheese, and both absolutely delivered. Comfort food at its best -- hot, flavorful, and exactly what you want after a long day (and a few drinks) at the ballpark. It's the kind of place you could easily miss if you didn't know it was there, but once you find it, you'll want to come back. The biggest problem was they allowed 3 pet dogs to come in and sit inside the restaurant. The dogs barked and got into a fight at one point. I'm still on my hunt for the best chicken and waffles. On a Sunday mid-afternoon, I went across town to little skillet. The parking was nearly a nightmare but with some patience, I found something a few streets over. I was confused at first and thought it was closed, but the location next door has the entrance in. I was greeted by a sweet individual Robbie. Robbie answered some questions I had and welcomed me in a warm way. I got the cheek and waffles of course and otpes out for a side, but later went back and asked for some collard greens. One thing I noted was they actually asked which type of meat I wanted, no extra charge. The outside was quite nice, given it's an alleyway. I quite enjoyed looking at the brick wall, it reminded me of home. And it was quite nice with oneself, on a quiet day, rather than be distracted by a bunch of activity. The presentation was lovely-- two watermelon slices, a mini corn muffin, a crispy breast and thigh, and some well-done waffles with powdered sugar-- and Robbie let me know the collard greens were on the house-- a small gesture, not asked for, not needed, but given anyhow. I personally enjoy the waffles more dense and well cooked as opposed to floopy waffles (lol, floopy). The syrup is quite natural tasting, light, but has rich flavor. Don't just toss away the sprig of thyme, take those leaves off and sprinkle them about-- it's a nice little flavor twist. Given Robbie's grace, the bill was only $19.67 for what you see in the pictures. Will be back again for sure. Thanks for the great experience, Robbie. Give him a raise. read more

You need to see it to believe it. ** Genuine, driven music. Peeking out defiantly from the background and scratching at that something in your sole that makes you go, Who is this? ** Fried Chicken like nobody else quite makes it. Lighter, milder-tasting, great crunch but somehow.... Somehow.... different than anybody else's. Blackened Catfish filet just a hair not spicy enough to be the best I've had. ** Cajuny/ Soul Food type sides that are fully legit. Collards are long cook, with personality. And that vegetarian liquor they get when you do em right. And grits. I've only ever had grits in SF from a pair of faux Cajun joints called Hard Knox. It's not good They pile on a *shitload* of cheese. It's some "I don't know JACK about Creole or Cajun Food" Cook's idea of how to amp up white people rendition to imitate real deal. Well guess what. Bring a salt shaker with you or just request one from the waitress. Because it's the ONLY thing missing from the best creamy with just a perfect hint of exterior crust grits I've had anywhere in San Francisco. And the takeaway cookies - one w chocolate chips and the other without disappeared under our smiles as we took the N line to Iracle Park to watch our G-men get owned by the Padres 10-5. It'll take more than your best IPA to wash that nasty flavor out of my mouth. read more

On a cold Saturday morning, we walked into Little Skillet. We haven't been here since the remodel, so we noticed that there's a new wall and now people don't walk up counter. I ordered the 2pc. Chicken and waffles, the veggie plate and French fries. Today must have been an off day because my chicken was dry and tiny, and the waffles were not tasty. My daughter loved her veggie plate and would love to eat it again. I ate a solid 3 star plate but my daughter's 5 star plate evens out the score. read more

Little Skillet came highly recommended as a place to eat before we watched the Giants game. This place did not live up to the hype. I ordered the 2pc Fried Chicken Combo with one side. I got the cornbread, but I could have picked a different side since it already came with a piece of cornbread. I didn't see that on the menu. I will chalk it up as my bad on that one. The two pieces I got were the two smallest thighs that I have ever had. That was a real bummer. For a fried chicken spot, they can't tiny pieces of chicken. The fry had a good crunch, but zero flavor. Thank goodness for the hot sauce they gave us. The mac and cheese balls appetizer was pretty dry inside. The Mac again was ok I think San Franciscans when they think of mac & cheese on the soul food side need to get out of that thought process of creamy mac & cheese. I got there around about 1 o'clock bar service hmmm felt like the focus was on cleaning and straightening for the rush-hour crowd after the game not friendly just blah. That smell of fried chicken that permeates the whole place will bring me back to try that, especially since my friends both loved the chicken and are still raving about it. Came here for lunch on a weekday at 11am. It was empty except for us for about 30 minutes until closer to 12. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and answered questions we had on the menu. I went with the two piece chicken with a side, chose Mac and cheese and added collard greens. The chicken was really good! And so were the collard greens. The Mac and cheese was also pretty tasty, although maybe a little runnier than I would normally prefer. The plate also came with a small cornbread muffin and a slice of lemon. The menu is variety of amount of chicken and sides you want. We ordered "The Works" 2 pieces of chicken and mac n cheese. It was not enough. The 8 pc between 3 people is a good amount. The collard greens and mac n cheese are good sides. The grits are TERRIBLE. I also appreciate that they give you a choice of what kind of meat you want without extra costs! I had this food last weekend and it was a good amount that pretty much equaled the price of what I paid, since it has pretty large servings and was something good to have during an outdoor block party. I was amazingly full and had leftovers to take home. It was that good. I had the Chic-n-Waffle Benedict and side of Mac & Cheese. I had been craving Mac and cheese forever and it was creamy and warm. The eggs benedict was really good too (the sweetness and flavor was perfectly tart the way I like it) and it was surprisingly suoee filling with chicken and waffles. It also had potatoes on the side and was simply delicious comfort food. Ambiance Indoors there's nice decor, big TV screens and soft seats, and of course the music was great since I was out there to support and event with DJs. Service I also got to meet the owner, Deana (not sure if I spelled that right sorry!), who was super nice. I came back a few days later when I thought I had left my shirt there and the staff was helpful in checking their lost and found. The music and vibes was good then too. While the food was good, nothing was particularly memorable or spectacular. My friend got the fried catfish, cajun fries, and waffles. The waffles paired nicely with our fried chicken and catfish. My friend's order came out incorrectly at first (chicken instead of catfish) but it was a little difficult to track down a waiter since we had ordered through the QR code. Eventually we were able to track the waiter down when they came to serve food at the table next to us. Felt a little pricy to have the default tip percentage set to 20% despite the minimal service. Overall, decent place for a casual weekday dinner, but nothing that really blew my mind here in terms of taste, service, or vibes. read more

Just so you guys know I'm not a hater. The ambiance was intriguing, so we thought it was going to be a good place but the food was pretty mid. I ordered a bowl and the mashed potatoes were cold, as well as some of the sides we bought. The corn was bitter and the grits had no flavor the kale salad was a d.i.y as well. The catfish and biscuits were good but are they even homemade.....? The "Cajun fries" were basically just thick, soggy fries with seasoning sprinkled on top. The mac and cheese also had a gritty texture which was sad because that's what we were most excited for. The location was easy to find and the staff was welcoming. It was pretty empty the time that I visited but I could see there was plenty of seating even on a busy day . It had a loft type of vibe but it was well lit with huge bar. There were alot of photo opportunities and the restaurants decorated nicely . They had lots of games you could pick up to play as well as books you could read which was pretty cool I had the chicken and waffles with collard greens and it was delicious !! My current go-to place in mission bay: Tasty soul food with particularly crispy, mouth-watering friend chicken and a great interior vibe. The food: I've been here several times when craving soul comfort food and it's always hit the spot. I especially suggest their perfectly seasoned and tender fried chicken with crispy waffles. You can tell their ingredients are high quality. Service: we were told to order with a QR code and the food arrived pretty quickly. Last minute decided to try this South of Market place out near closing time and ordered two chicken and a side collard greens. Nice atmosphere In restaurant. I have heard about this place and their fried chicken. I took the bus to get here and it's near the Oracle Baseball park with the brick buildings. End of the 45 and 30 Stockton buses resides nearby. This place was a bit hard to find, for its in an alley. I was a bit sacred to go down by myself, but it was ok. I believe they have another outpost at the SFO airport with the same name. As I waited for my takeout, the bartender and waitress were chatting with customers at the bar. A couple on the corner were eating their dinner. I had a delivery pickup guy pick up his orders for delivery. So just a easy laid back atmosphere for a chill Friday evening near closing time. Got my food and walked out of ally to jump on bus. Got home and said too late to eat now. Will eat for lunch tomorrow. Next day used airfyer and reheat chicken and used microwave to heat up the collard greens. The collard greens were big and leafy greens but the marinade they used on it I didn't care for, a bit sour tasting. Most places would just make it bland tasting because the star of show would be the crispy chicken. The chicken was good with nice crisp to them and soft meat. I felt that it was missing some additional flavor. It is good quality meats and veggie which the presentation can show. I have traveled to Southern states, Chicago and Detroit so I had my fair share of fried chicken to compare with Harold's chicken and Roscoes. But with such a short supply of Southern and soul food restaurants around San Francisco (lost Rusty's Southern), this is good for the American taste buds. But I know this place is probably popular for their hip jazz brunch and specialty cocktails, so it is good restaurant for the sports people after or before a game to hang out vibes.
