As someone who cooks professionally (an amateur home cook), the Gumbo is something that I can never get right; 1 second too long and the roux is burnt. Prudently, I'd rather traverse from the peninsula on a random Monday for some Gumbo. To say that I was pleasantly surprised was an understatement. The gumbo was seasoned perfectly. I noticed that the chicken is shredded presumably from a pressure cooker, which turns every bite into a mouthful of everything. Despite my best efforts to not be dramatic, one can tell the passion and soul that is put into this bowl of Gumbo. Though I do see some comments, and I agree, that the Gumbo is not thick enough, I don't really care for a heavy/dense gumbo. This bowl has sufficient structure absent the heavy dense roux, and it was exactly to my liking. Though I wish there was a touch more rice, my $6 Caltrain ticket (+tax and muni) was not spent in vain for this heartwarming bowl of gumbo, with a side of passion, defining what real soul food is. read more

Finally decided to come by this place after hearing multiple people talk about it. Parking can be a little tough on 3rd st, but nothing impossible. Prices are a little steep for the neighborhood, but when zooming out of the microscope, are very fair for SF, even more so given the small southern soul food scene. I ordered a Shrimp Po'Boy and small Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. The Shrimp Po'Boy was amazing and definitely star of the show. The sauces were super delicious and they did not skimp on the shrimp. The gumbo had really good flavors, but I wish they gave bigger portions more proportionate to the price, since I paid ~$15 for a small and it felt like it was kid-sized. The spices and flavor were deep and savory, but was a little salty and found myself eating more rice than expected to offset the saltiness. Somewhat of a "hidden gem" for it being based in the Bayview, but I urge SF people to explore the City for its diverse food culture, and not only eat in places in the "main" neighborhoods! read more

But the gumbo was spot on -- absolutely delicious and very authentic, best I have had in CA. The shrimp poboy was really good but next time I'll try it with the "social sauce" instead of dressed (which means lettuce, tomato and mayo). I'm used to breaded and fried shrimp in poboys in New Orleans, but the grilled and seasoned shrimp was good and obviously much healthier :). They have a nice selection of canned beers so I had an IPA with mine. Gumbo Special is definitely one of the best spots in the city. The steal of the show was the shrimp Po Boy' -- oh boy, it was so good. My sister and I shared a delicious jackfruit poboy and bowl of greens and we were delighted with both. Somebody worked their magic with the jackfruit and the remoulade sauce nestled in a bun that was soft on the inside and barely crunchy on the outside. I saw a post on social media about this place over the weekend and couldn't wait to try, So, I ordered online and we picked it up from Pacifica. I ordered chicken and sausage gumbo, corn hoecake and shrimp po'boy. Corn Hoecake - It was okay. I don't think it's worth $6 for a piece of corn pancake in my opinion. It's very small, flat, and dry. Shrimp Po'Boy - A sandwich with 8 pieces of shrimps with their secret sauce. I expected for the shrimps to be battered with cornmeal and fried like the way I've had them in the past including New Orleans. The flavor was okay, but it was lacking excitement. There was barely any coleslaw in the sandwich. For $20, maybe adding more shrimps, slaws add tomatoes and maybe add fries with the order to make it worth it. Chicken and Sausage Gumbo - It was a little bitter. It's not the traditional gumbo that we're used to having. Maybe the roux was overly cooked or maybe burnt. The seasonings, however, made up for it. My order came with very little amount of shredded chicken and I only found about 4 pieces of sausages. It was mostly broth and you have to order the rice separately. Did we come at the wrong time? People from Louisiana, specifically New Orleans have a different opion on what constitutes a "gumbo". One of the first tthings we look for is crab, shrimp and/or some type of seafood. While planning my visit to SF from DC I had Gumbo Social circled to visit as it is a black owned restaurant. My first night I drove here with the anticipation of ordering to go.. the food did NOT disappoint, it was so good I sat down and ate the entire bowl and ordered another one to go. I ordered chicken and sausage, but unfortunately they were out so I was told to try the Cochon Gumbo.. I added shrimp and it was a home run. My last night I returned, I must admit, San Fran food is good but I wanted to return here as this was one of my favorite locations in the Bay Area. I reordered the same dish however this time the owner took my order. While he made my food, with assistance, we held a good conversation about the restaurant and culture of the area as the demographics and vibe are vastly different than in Washington, DC. It was a pleasure dining in and patronizing this establishment. Ironically, Dontaye (owners name) made my food the first time I visited. I didn't know he was the owner. I came here twice to try out the gumbo and poboy sandwich. It was my first time ever eating gumbo. I had the chicken and sausage gumbo. It tasted a bit too salty for me. I was born and raised in SF, so I don't know what authentic gumbo tastes like though. For context, I also found the mulfuletta sandwich on Divisadero St salty too. Maybe they can make a less salty version of the gumbo? The second time, I came back since they emailed me a $5 off coupon for my birthday. I enjoyed the poboy sandwich a lot more. It's a casual place, so you might also find yourself chatting it up with Mr. Gumbo and learning about the place's origins (farmer's markets and catered events) and the fact that neighborhood residents are trying to get him to stay open past 8 p.m. Help yourself to disposable cutlery and enjoy richly satisfying gumbo/southern food/soul food served in disposable bowls. I thought I would love the hoe cake- but it was fine - it could have benefited from being hotter and maybe a pat of butter too. The sandwich was my favorite - loaded with tender pork. Whatever the orange sauce that was on it - I could drink it! I would love if they would offer a fried chicken po boy and also they have po boys served with french fries IN them in New Orleans - that also sounds great. The gumbo was huge and very flavorful. Sauce creamy, with a kick. Add Crystals if you want extra kick or their pickles and you have a perfect sandwich. Highly recommend. Hot link po'boy. All the same stuff as the shrimp po'boy but with hotlinks. Also quite good, but I prefer the shrimp, still can't go wrong with this either. Salad. An interesting addition. A light salad with a simple tangy sauce, though they had these peeled carrots that either I was eating wrong or didn't really fit well in a salad. Probably wouldn't get this again. Red Velvet Cake. Pretty standard and solid red velvet cake. A bit on the sweet side, but light and fluffy cake with good flavors. Probably still a good choice. Overall a pretty solid spot. Glad I was able to try so many things for restaurant week. I'm super interested in their roast duck and pork that I wasn't able to try that day. Delectable chicken sausage gumbo and greens with cornbread fo 30 bucks. Hits my spot!

This place was great. We stopped in for restaurant week and got half gumbo, half po'boy combos. I got the fried fish po'boy and cochon gumbo and both were excellent. The crunchy fish with their homemade remoulade was tasty. My partner is vegetarian and she loved the jackfruit po'boy and vegan gumbo. I would definitely add on the fries, thin with a dusting of Cajun salt! Highly recommend the food and the people working there were kind and friendly and gave helpful recommendations! read more

The food was fantastic and I can't wait to try more. I ordered the sea burger which was a fantastic fried fish sandwich. The fish was freshly fried. I could have eaten it plain. The tomato tasted like it was grown on-site. The bread was buttered and toasted to perfection. I would have paid more than $15 for more fish, but I left satisfied. The highly-anticipated brick-and-mortar debut of a beloved farmers market pop-up does not disappoint. I have now been twice, and both times have been impressive. The gumbo is stunning, with the right amount of spice - and with hearty protein. The large size is incredibly generous and could likely feed two people if they aren't hungry. The po boys are also good - but the gumbo is the star. Service is among the best I've seen post-pandemic, particularly for a more casual spot. Staff are incredibly friendly and interactive; they appear to actually enjoy their jobs. I'm looking forward to continued visits. And I'll never skip the gumbo. read more
