Shrimp Po'Boy, Chicken & Sausage Gumbo
    Wan-Yu L.

In the area with friends, and we decided to swing by and try out this place. The shrimp po'boy was so delicious and flavorful, but I wish the serving size was a little bigger. The chicken & sausage gumbo was well spiced and flavorful, but erred a bit on the salty side. Great place for soul food, and I'll definitely swing by if I'm craving gumbo in the future!

Plenty of beer choices and also many types of hot sauce available

We stopped by Gumbo Social for lunch on Saturday, around 1pm. It was about half full with various couples, families, small adult groups enjoying the food. We ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo, and the shrimp po-boy "dressed". I'm from New Orleans originally so I keep my expectations for genuinely good southern food at a medium level out here in CA. But the gumbo was spot on -- absolutely delicious and very authentic, best I have had in CA. The shrimp poboy was really good but next time I'll try it with the "social sauce" instead of dressed (which means lettuce, tomato and mayo). I'm used to breaded and fried shrimp in poboys in New Orleans, but the grilled and seasoned shrimp was good and obviously much healthier :). They have a nice selection of canned beers so I had an IPA with mine. Service - you order at the register but the lady working there helped us figure out how to pay for the beer (hit the beverage button twice). She was very friendly and helpful. Parking - plenty of parking right in front. We will definitely come back again , we want to try the red beans and rice next time.

Delicious Southern food. Service is minimal. They have a number of tables, casual vibe. - Grilled shrimp po boy was probably the best in SF. The bread can be better but their sauce was so delicious - Gumbo: very flavorful. I wish it was a little thicker. Maybe more roux? - Hoe cake: pleasantly surprised. It was not too dried, has good corn flavor. Would be really good with hot honey or something like that. - California green: it was ok. I just wanted some veggies. I will likely skip this the next time I visit.

Gumbo Special is definitely one of the best spots in the city. The steal of the show was the shrimp Po Boy' -- oh boy, it was so good. We also got the family-size gumbo with sausage and chicken, and it was super flavorful and comforting. Everything tasted fresh and well seasoned, and the whole meal really hit the spot. Definitely a place we'd go back to.

*Note: TDLR at the end of the review Chicken and Sausage Gumbo: 6/10 It was flavorful and spicy, but definitely not worth the price. There was barely any chicken or sausage. The chicken was so freakin thinly shredded you can barely tell it's there. Only got about 3-4 sausage slices and each slice was probably a millimeter wide. Recommend adding some hot sauce so there's some acidity that cuts through the heaviness of the gumbo. Hoecake: 9/10 FIREEEEE. Love love love. I could eat up like 10 of these. Mine was a tad burnt on the outside, but that did not stop me from eating that whole thing up. Minus 2 points because it was like $5-$6 for one which I think is expensive. Two small ones or one big one would be worth. Service: 7.5/10 Cashier was not having it in the morning lol, but after she got her coffee she was super hospitable and nice. Food came out pretty fast and she brought it to our table. Ambiance: 10/10 The music? HITTINGGGG. I was vibin the whole damn time. I think someone turned the music out too, which made it even better. There's a handful of tables and the interior is nice and clean. TDLR: Overpriced. Gumbo is okay. Hoecake is FIRE. Wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but doesn't hurt to try once. They play good ass music. Food came out fast and inside is clean.

I've been looking for really good southern food in SF- I've tried Brenda's and Hard Knox for starters- and Gumbo Social has by far, hands down, the best gumbo (id hope, its in the name) it was a little pricey getting the gumbo and a side of the red beans and rice! alittle over 30$ for both but the flavour was phenomenal and the food was ready pretty quickly. empty restaurant which I love. very niche place, mostly serving gumbo, but if thats what you're looking for they have it.

Ordered togo on a Thursday for 6:40pm pick up. Arrived at 6:30 and the order was ready for pickup. Food: Smoked Cochon - really good, loaded with sausage, greens, and a bit of stewed pork, pretty spicy but so delicious with complex layers of flavor, great with some steamed rice, gumbo is on the thinner soupy side in texture so make sure you have a starch to soak in the gumbo California Greens - really good, tender braised kale in a rich tomato sauce with a variety of beans which added heartiness, a touch sweet in flavor, very good Corn hoe cake - pretty good, a griddle corn pancakes, that was light and fluffy, a nice side to accompany the gumbo Service was great, warm and friendly. A gumbo was missing when picking up the order, thankfully noticed before leaving and went back to the restaurant and they quickly corrected the order and included some steamed rice as a gift along with a slightly larger serving size. Overall the gumbo is spectacular, so delicious and comforting. Service is also excellent, definitely make an effort to give this spot a try.

    Chicken and sausage gumbo... mmmm

Gumbo doesn't disappoint... the chicken and sausage gumbo is a staple must try and of course you gotta have a po'boy

    California Greens

My sister and I shared a delicious jackfruit poboy and bowl of greens and we were delighted with both. Somebody worked their magic with the jackfruit and the remoulade sauce nestled in a bun that was soft on the inside and barely crunchy on the outside. As for the greens I had never seen them combined with a mix of beans but the combination worked. I highly recommend Gumbo Social as a choice for plant forward food that pops with flavor plus doesn't singe your taste buds!

Super friendly staff. Plenty of seating. Warm welcomes!!

Found the perfect soul-warming escape on a drizzly, foggy day at Gumbo Social. Let me tell you - their gumbo is nothing short of special. I opted to add shrimp to mine, and it was absolutely the right call. Each spoonful was a comforting and all the flavors hit all the right notes. But can we talk about their pancake-style cornbread? When the staff recommended it, I should have known to trust them and order double. Even the large size gumbo left me wanting more - it's that addictive. The experience goes beyond just the incredible food. The staff here radiate warmth and genuine hospitality, making you feel like you're being welcomed into someone's home rather than just another restaurant. There's plenty of comfortable seating, so no need to worry about waiting around. Gumbo Social is absolutely worth the journey. The combination of outstanding food, welcoming atmosphere, and attentive service makes this place a true gem. PS I was so hungry i ate the food so fast and didn't snap a pic. I'll be back for another bowl for more pictures!

This was a great find in Bayview! I don't usually visit this part of town, but I decided to come for SF Restaurant Week. Good: - The Shrimp PoBoy was amazing - one of the best I've had - the amount of savory sauce and the shrimp itself were so fresh and well portioned - The gumbo was a little salty but very filling - super great tasting and I liked the chicken and sausage one - The cajun fries were well seasoned as well. - Prices were so great - $15 per person for way more than enough food - The Brussel sprouts were also so tasty! Bad: - The food took a bit to come out and we had to wait for about 15-20 minutes - Self service for the most part - Casual diner vibes Overall enjoyed the experience here and would come just for the shrimp PoBoy.

Chicken & Sausage Gumbo + blue crab meat (perfection in a bowl)
    Sev C.

My bf and I came in here the other day to try the gumbo. I loved the vibe of this place. The woman behind the counter was extremely sweet. The gumbo was so delicious. The roux was perfection and they do not skimp on the ingredients (Add the blue crab meat) My only regret was eating somewhere else before we came. I wanted to try more. We will definitely come back on an empty stomach.

Basa fish, Ho' cake, and turkey gumbo

Food is definitely five star. This place is perfect for no nonsense, get your grub on stop and go. Very relaxed and casual atmosphere, just placed your order. They'll bring it to you and have delicious food. We had no problem parking on a Saturday but I can imagine on weekdays maybe a different story. You can take the train, which will drop you off in front of the restaurant if you prefer The gumbo that I had was the chicken with sausage and it reminded me of my mom from Louisiana's gumbo. Very very good, lots of spices. My wife got the turkey gumbo and it was very good but I preferred the chicken with sausage. I added the blue crab meat and that really made it special. we split a fried Basa fish Poboy and the sauce was really the boss. It really brought out a good Cajun flavor. The roll was thick, but didn't take away from the taste of the sauce, the fish and the slaw, though I did add a little of the hot sauce of which they have a large variety. Definitely enough to split with a friend.

We waited about 30-40 minutes on a Sunday, which was understandable given how busy and well-known the restaurant is. One thing that confused us was the ordering process. I initially wanted to order a particular dish (unfortunately I don't remember the name and for some reasons I don't have a picture of it), but one server told me they couldn't make it because they were missing some ingredients. Later, another server took the same order without any issues, and the dish arrived exactly as written in the menu. Since it was clearly available, I never understood why I was told otherwise in the first place. As for the food, it was good, but it didn't quite live up to our expectations. Having experienced Creole food in New Orleans, we felt the flavors there were more balanced and memorable. Here, our main dishes were a bit saltier than we would have liked, and overall the food didn't stand out enough to make us want to return. The atmosphere was pleasant, and I can understand why the restaurant is so popular. However, after visiting, I felt that some of the hype may be bigger than the actual experience. I'm glad we tried it, but if you're already familiar with Creole food from New Orleans, you may find it less impressive than expected.

Great food, great service, and a memorable experience from start to finish. The Front Porch is well worth a visit and deserves a spot on any San Francisco dining list.

The service is so kind that it makes up for the next part of the review which gives the food a 3/5. The fried shrimp didn't have much seasoning but was crispy. The red beans and rice was a little mushy and had more beans than rice. The potato salad was lacking in flavor. These sides 3/5 I did enjoy the collard greens, cabbage, and the Mac and cheese. My partner said the cabbage should have had some meat in it to make the flavors more robust. I like it without the bacon and meat personally. It caters to a more vegetarian clean eating crowd. If it was in the stock I'm not sure... these sides were a 4/5 The oxtails we ordered was DELICIOUS. Probably some of the best most tender oxtail I could buy from a restaurant . 5/5!!

My experience with this restaurant has been inconsistent, but my most recent catering order was…read moreextremely disappointing. The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.

Can get loud but we've always come at times where it's not too busy. I always make a reservation just in case because it can get packed in there. I'm one to never stray away from something I know is good so I stick to my usual... the fried chicken! My sides stay the same as well- red beans and rice, fried okra and the collard greens. The smoky and savory collard greens is a sure winner, the fried okra Is my absolute favorite side dish though. The chicken is always crunchy and seasoned well. Consistency is always on point. We've recently veered from the norm and got adventurous trying the stuffed pork chop and that now may be my favorite entree there. The bacon and spinach and the cheese that's all melty from being stuffed inside soaking up that delicious pork juice... amazing. When we can't figure out what to eat this has become our "usual spot" Can't wait to go again

I had the fried catfish with collard greens, Mac-n-cheese and a biscuit. My friend had the blackened catfish, with red beans & rice, collard greens and French fries. Another friend had the pulled pork hash with eggs and a biscuit. For drinks we had watermelon tea and one friend had a guava mimosa and another had a peach mimosa. Everything we ate was delicious. The service was attentive, friendly and prompt. I look forward to going back again soon, I need to try their beignets. I'd recommend eating here if you like NOLA style Soul food.

Awesome sounds on the baritone sax, bass, and drums, with songs like Fly Me To The Moon setting the mood on a Saturday evening. To eat, we had the catfish fingers appetizer, daniel's gumbo, and slow braised short ribs. The catfish was lightly breaded and tender, the short ribs were soft like butter with a tasty sauce, and the gumbo was a hearty dish in a flavorful stew, generous with the meats (chicken, ham, andouille sausage, and shrimp). We also got the dessert special, banana pecan muffin which came with fresh slices of strawberry and blueberries, as well as a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was delightful. To drink, I tried a couple different cocktails, the Lavender French 75 and The Cotton Club. Both were really good, but I especially enjoyed the latter which was heavy on the strawberry and lemon flavors, my fave. All in all, we had a wonderful experience here, savoring every last bite of our meal while immersed in the inviting atmosphere ideal for date night or any special occasion.
