I typically go to PokeBowl location, but I decided to give this place a try. The portions are very small here, and some ingredients lack flavor. First, the bowl was almost just rice, so they're stingy with both protein and toppings. Second, there was a lack of sauce. I chose the Unagi sauce and the Spicy house but didn't taste any unagi sauce. As for the toppings, it's great that they have so many options but again, they are very stingy with them. Jellyfish barely had flavor, and I finished all the edamame in two bites because there weren't a lot of them. I love poke and have been going to Poke Origin about once every two weeks for the past year or so. My last few visits have been extremely disappointing. I'm not sure if they have either forgotten the sauce completely or are just being extremely stingy but I haven't seen or tasted any of the sauces I've selected in the last two bowls I've gotten. This makes the rice dry and flavorless, since it also isn't seasoned like regular sushi rice. Speaking of rice, the brown rice I got in my bowl tonight had globs of PAPER TOWEL in it. Unacceptable. Ordered delivery due to Covid. You essentially create your own bowl by choosing 3 or 5 scoops of poke, the base, toppings and sauces. We ordered the regular size (3 scoops) and the portion was generous. When we ordered it, we noticed that we couldn't detect any sauce in our bowls and the order didn't have any sauces on the side. We called the restaurant and instead of admitting their mistake, they stated that they indeed put the sauces in the bowls, but may just have been in the lighter side. This was just a blatant lie. I could say that perhaps make an argument that the soy sauce was so light that I couldn't taste it, but one of the bowls was supposed to come with creamy wasabi, and I'm sorry, but there was no wasabi flavor to be detected. This experience probably influenced the food experience, but the flavors were average at best. Not sure if this was a fluke, but due to the poor experience, I'll probably try one of the many other poke places in the area before returning. read more

I would say Poke Origin is one of my top spots for poke bowls! One thing that sets them apart from their competitors is that they have escolar (super white tuna) and hamachi as two of their protein choices. I came in to grab a quick lunch with a friend. The employee helping us was really nice. I got massaged/marinated kale for my base, with 2 scoops of salmon and 1 scoop of escolar, + a bunch of toppings of course. The regular bowl comes with 3 scoops of fish and is $10. The protein portions are pretty big, so I was pretty happy about that! I also liked how seaweed salad is included as a side and is not extra charge. They also have a varity of sauces to choose from, and you can choose up to 3. Each bite of protein includes rice or kale and...sigh. I normally get hamachi, but since they charge here, I got ahi tuna and albacore to replace. I'm more for quality, so the price might be right at Poke Origin, but the quality is significantly lower than Poki Time. While I didn't love this place, I believe in second chances for some. I had the mild house sauce. I'd come back. I was able to save the plastic bowl container. They are very generous with their portion sizes, and even though they say it is "3 scoops," the servers often give a little extra. Poke Origin definitely gives more for its price. I will say, though, that the quality of the food didn't impress me. The fish/seafood didn't taste particularly flavorful or fresh, and the toppings had a bland taste to them. Poke Origins gets an A++ for their freshness, portion size, and pricing. Overall, the BF and I were really happy with our meal. With all the different poke bowl joints popping up left and rights, it's hard to find one where you know the fish is fresh and the prices decent. Amongst many competitors, Poke Origin stands out. They have a good assortment of toppings and prices are comparable, if not better than other places. Best of all their fish is fresh and I enjoy the fact that they're cut into big chunks instead of tiny little pieces. Limited seating and as with all other 9th and Irving establishments, good luck with parking. Also, no public bathroom. This is definitely more of a quick bite place. I been here a lot. Make sure to use their rewards app. I'm closing in on my third free bowl so that shows how many times I come here. Over time, I stopped coming so frequently because the quality has gone down. Each time I go now, I get a stomach ache, while before, I never had any issues. I decided to write a review today because I didn't like what I received the most today out of other times. The brown rice I got was hard and crusted as if I got the leftovers on the bottom. Another thing that bugged me was the menu says you can choose 2-3 sauces. That's exactly what my friends and I did. We chose 2 to mix in the bowl and 1 on the side so we can try it for future visits (all 3 of us did that so we had 3 sauces on the side total)We were charged 50 cents for each one and it came up as "extra sauce" but that's clearly not extra if it came out to 3 sauces total per person. Other times that I asked for sauce on the side, I was never charged as long as I kept it under 3 like the menu said. Even the owner never charged but we were charged today. As I asked for sauce on the side, I could hear the female cashier snicker or laugh saying something about how we all asked for sauce on the side. Not sure what's funny there. To review their food, it's pretty good in my opinion. They have many options for protein, toppings and sauces. For $15.18 for 5 scoops of protein is pretty good deal and always fills me up. Only issue is the freshness of their fish since sometimes I get a stomach ache, sometimes I don't. Sometimes the portion is inconsistent as well. If Poke Origin messes up your order, not only does it NOT apologize, but THE MANAGER will tell you to make the delivery service (in this case, DoorDash) give you a refund: essentially making DoorDash PAY for THEIR mistake. Fish is fresh, they have a large selection of bases (including nacho chips and kelp noodles), service is friendly and the unagi is delicious. Hawaiian chips and drinks are also sold here. Parking is a bit of a pain in the area but it's a great stop if you're on foot and in the area! For delivery though, I'll pass :( The sauce has been missing at least 50% of the time from my order. I've ordered sauce on the side, I've ordered sauce on top, I've asked in the notes section to please not forget sauce. But any way I've asked, I only get sauce half the time. I typically just try to make some sort of sad spicy mayo to put on top but it is not the same. This is a favorite spot for delivery for friends as well and they too end up with a great bowl of poke with no sauce way too often. Happened again last night and i think I'm going to have to just wait to order in person before I have food from here again. The only reason Poke Origin is getting 3 stars is because of how delicious the bowls are. I have ordered delivery from Poke Origin via Doordash a few times, and usually it's been delicious and quick. The food is fresh, the sauces are delicious, and the sizes are generally perfect (regular for an average appetite, large for someone with a huge appetite). I also really like that they charge for utensils instead of giving them away for free-- especially with delivery, when most of us have utensils at home-- it is much less wasteful. However, in my last order, they messed up 4 out of 5 items! I ordered a large poke bowl, a regular poke bowl, two chips, and a miso soup. I only received two regular bowls. When I called, they informed me that they had run out of large bowls, so had just given us a regular instead. I don't think that is the best business practice-- while the number of scoops of fish may have fit into the regular bowl, there is more base in a large bowl, and my partner (with a big appetite) was not able to be full from a regular bowl. And they forgot the miso soup and chips-- so essentially, in an order of 5 items, they got one of them right. The restaurant apologized to me and I do think they felt bad for making the mistake. In the end, it's not their fault that they didn't get the large bowls from the manufacturer, although they should have told us instead of charging us extra for less food than we were expecting. I think that the mistake is probably going to prevent me from ordering delivery in the future from here-- it is too many items to mess up-- but if I find myself in the neighborhood, I may stop by in person. read more

One day I decided to take my husky puppy on a spontaneous trip to the beach. We rode the N train from end to end, Caltrain to Ocean Beach. Whew, always such a lengthy trip. I asked the girl working if I could bring my ESA inside just to order food, and she said yes. I'm always worried to leave him outside, for fear of him being stolen or something. It seems like this place attracts a lot of regulars, and I love how approachable the cashier is! Smiley and accommodating. There are slips of paper on the wall with pencils to jot down your order. Super quick and efficient. Most of all, the variety of options is memorable. I've never been to a poke place that had jellyfish and scallops on the menu! Feeling a little skeptical, I put both in my bowl. Turned out to be pretty good. The whole thing was appetizing. I think Poke Origin is a newer addition to the strip of Sunset restaurants, and it's a worthy contender. Modern and clean interior. Good amount of seating. I've ordered from Poke Origin a lot. Quality of fish is decent. The price point is probably the best of the poke options in SF. The problem is the preparation. There is not a lot of consistency and sometimes that's okay, but other times it can sort of ruin the bowl. On a good day, quality, size, flavor is 5 star. Today, I got a bowl of fish with absolutely no sauce. None. That's the kind of inconsistency that turns a 5 star meal into a 2 star meal. Ultimately, the place is good. Hence the 4 star. I will continue to order there because most other poke places in SF are too expensive for a big powl of rice with tiny portions of fish. Poke origin doesn't skimp on the proteins. I ordered for pickup to go via the online ordering system, and my order was ready when I got there. I got the large bowl, which comes with 5 scoops of protein. It comes out close to $15 with tax. I chose 2 scoops of salmon, 1 scoop spicy ahi tuna, 1 scoop albacore, and 1 scoop of scallop. I also added toppings of seaweed salad, kimchi, jellyfish, oshinko, masago, and green onions. I didn't check my order until I got home, since I wasn't about to open the bowl and dug through the layer of toppings and fish to see if everything was there.I was a bit bummed when I was checking my bowl at home and saw that the scallops were missing. Oh well, there were still a good amount of protein and toppings, but I would have really appreciated the 5th scoop of protein since that's what I'm paying for (versus a small bowl with 3 scoops). The portion was enough for me to share it. The flavors were really on point. I got the spicy house sauce, and it is indeed spicy. No worries there, I love spicy! The portion sizes are way off. I ordered one small bowl and one large bowl and they are exactly the same. If I am paying for the large portion, I would expect it to be the correct size. If I could 0 stars, I would. The fish (I got salmon) was lacking in color and taste and didn't seem fresh. They drenched my bowl in sauce. On the topic of sauce, DONT GET THE MISO SAUCE; it was sour and didn't taste like miso. It didn't complement the fish well and drenched my greens and add ons. When I finished my bowl, there was a film and residue from all the leftover sauce and liquids from the salmon and add ons. The portions are extreme small in comparison to other places I've visited and the prices were high. I know inflation has impacted a lot of businesses but the quality of the food and experience didn't justify the price. I'm willing to pay for the price of food, that is if it's good. And this place's poke wasn't. I asked for furikake and fried garlic and didn't see nor taste them. Instead of those toppings, I found a bunch of sesame seeds, which I didn't order. I watched the worker add macadamia nuts to another party's dish and she gave it a few shakes but barely anything came out. She didn't do anything about it. I guess she was satisfied with that and not interested in fixing the dispenser. Overall, it was a very underwhelming and unsatisfactory experience. I won't be coming back. Felt that they could've used more poke sauce as the bowl was bland. You get quite a bit of fish for a large (5 scoops). I actually made more rice at home and divided it into two bowls. Enough fish for everyone! Their rice was getting hard and I felt the rice I made at home tasted better. I like that macadamia nuts were a free topping, sets it apart from other poke places.
