Had a craving for Poke and as we were driving by, saw the Now Open sign at Poke Poke. Was greeted by two gents working behind the counter. They were very pleasant and helpful. The fish, sides and toppings all looked very clean and fresh. I ordered 2 regular plates which come with 3 proteins. I picked 2 spicy tuna and 1 salmon for each plate with spicy sauce. Stopped in for a quick late lunch a few days ago. I had a bowl with spicy tuna, seared tuna, and salmon. All were very tasty and fresh, the way they have to be for good poki. The sauces and spicy tuna run a little on the spicy side so be aware of that. They have a lot of choices for both toppings and base: white rice, brown rice, and various greens for the base, and 15-20 toppings - more than I can remember. Pretty reasonable prices too, even after a recent $2 bump. read more

Been patronizing the various Poki Poki locaitons for a while. While pricey, we love the customization, and hand crafted creations. 4 stars only because they could be better. They really need a proper soda fount, even if off-brand. I love this place and I go at least a couple times a month so I don't want to not give them 5 stars but I went in and literally got the least amount of fish you could get, like bare minimum even was given the bare minimum on toppings, I only get masago and imitation crab, so my bowl was literally all rice. They have so many different choices and you can mix and match to the combination you want. Horrible 2) I went back to the store the next day to let them know and make it right, they said that they would have the manager call me. Of course he or she never called me. This is the best Poke in Carlsbad or Encinitas hands down. Agree with other reviewers that this is because (1) Great value (there is a place that I won't name in the La Costa Town Square that is nearly twice as much for a bowl and not as good; (2) Fresh ingredients - salmon, tuna, octopus, albacore all taste like good sushi. Salad looks fresh too; and (3) The employees are super nice - not sure if they just know how to hire good people or everyone gets good training lol -- but they all seem like genuinely nice people and one liked my Star Wars T-shirt and agreed the Rogue One was the best SW movie since 1980 -- bonus points! So best poke around ... the only other place that comes close is wicked poke in Oceanside. This is an average poke shop. It has all of the standard fast serve poke dishes and ingredients. The staff work hard and fast and I go there for lunch sometimes. The fish, especially the tuna are sometimes suspect or pasty in appearance. That is what you often see when these places chop up pounds of raw tuna in the morning and leave it in a fridge container all day. I don't have anything bad to say other than in this trend of these poke places that are popping up everywhere, this is just another one. This is a small business with metal chairs. I think the bar stools at the windows are too strangely shaped to contour comfortably with my behind. It is in a strip mall near El Camino Real and Leucadia BLVD. It is near a Men's Wearhouse (a business chain store I didn't even know still existed in the world) and a cell phone store. The view is of the parking lot, but there are people who walk by on the sidewalk and you can watch them and see where they go. There are perhaps five tables with four chairs and a row of window seats. It seemed like most everyone was getting food to go though. I was watching them and listening to them. I wrote down what I heard them say (this is important to know for an eating business, you want to know what you will be surrounded by aurally when you are eating somewhere (well, I mean you should want to know, it's important)). They said this: First person - "Can I just do a regular bowl?" "Of course" "Can I do brown rice?" "Can I do salmon?" "Did you want cucumbers or onions on this?" "I'll do cucumbers" Second person - "Can I do seaweed salad and then edamame?" Third person - "Let's do corn, and radish!" Fourth person - "I'll do spicy tuna" Fifth person - "I'm ready. Can I do a regular bowl with brown rice?" Sixth person - "It's good but it's way too spicy, I usually like it but...(voice trails off)" Seventh person - "I'll just get a little bit more ahi please. No, not spicy at all." "Can I do a little bit of gyoza and a little bit of spicy mayo?" "Can I do jalapeños?" Eighth person - "Can I do a little bit of seaweed salad, um, edamame?" "Sure, sesame seeds or dried seaweed?" "I'll do both. How long have you been open?" "Uh, two weeks." Ninth and Tenth person - "I can't bring anything to the house." "Why? Because it's not kosher?" "Yeah." "It's your water bottle." "Yeah but maybe the dish soap I use at home or my sink, or something might contaminate it." I think edamame was the most popular topping. I imagined all those people "doing" the food. What are they going to do to that poor food? It sounded so transgressive. I don't use that word when I order things but maybe I'm strange. They have a simple sign above a bar and you have someone who makes your bowls for you. The sign gives you each step and your choices for each step. It was very easy to follow even though it was my first time inside of this business. Choice one is what you want on the bottom of your bowl. You can have brown/white rice, salad, chips, something else. Choice two is your protein sea animal choices. You get to pick like 3-5 scoops depending on your level of hunger. They have many choices. I asked for spicy tuna (a kind of orangish looking mash - they used an ice-cream scoop) and ahi tuna (raw tuna squares, here they are cut small, that is something I liked). I think you can get octopus, salmon, seared tuna slices, all kinds of things. I don't know how much of it is raw. I think the octopus and the shrimp are cooked. They mix your ahi tuna in a bowl with sauce and onions and cucumber. You get to choose whatever of these things you like. Step Three consists of your toppings. I got green onions, radishes, jalapeños, seaweed salad and dried seaweed. It was a good combination for me. I also added sri racha and some other sauces. They also let you put more sauces later if you like. I got a table in the corner. I like to sit with my back against the wall facing the entrances and spaces. It was soothing to be like that. I saw the people coming in to order. It wasn't very loud, just small. There was a faux wooden trash receptacle across from me. A blue one as well for recycling. And then next to that a giant black DJ radio what looked like a big speaker maybe karaoke machine. It wasn't on. I wondered why it was there though. I was too afraid, socially, of inquiring (at the time). The food tasted very fresh. They even cut things there. I'm not sure what they were cutting but it sounded very vigorous, like it was a big piece of sea creature body. The food was also flavored in a pleasant way. Each bite was exciting because it was usually a new taste. I got white rice but it was maybe a lot of rice. I ate it all anyway. I like white rice and theirs was cooked well. And I added more sauces. Maybe I'll try a bowl with no bottom layer next time. They had chopsticks to eat with, and/or black plastic forks. They have complimentary water that tastes like cucumbers and is nice and cool. The eighth and ninth persons above talking in my list were there in front of me. One was filling her water container (well, I didn't know you could do that!). I guess she worked in a kosher household. I learned a lot from my experience in poki poki, and had a very enjoyable and semi-healthy (white rice is not healthy) lunch that was very nice tasting. read more

I entered the store today on Christmas. I medically cannot wear a mask, per my doctor. The person behind the counter asked if I had a mask, very kindly. Like the Poki Poki of of San Marcos, this shop stands proud as a delicious stop to grab fresh and delicious fish with the abundance of toppings and sides you could hope for. The portions are huge, the prices are very reasonable, and the food is pretty damn good. On the plus sides, they have Octopus, Crab Meat as a regular add-on (and not as one of your protein selections), and all the Salmon you could hope for. On the down side, they serve their Poke Hawaiian style, which means that the rice is typically warm, which I've never been a fan of. Still, with the right sauces and eating everything right away, it can still be quite perfect. On the odd side of this, Poki Poki, while I'm very happy is now in our neighborhood, is the second such shop of the same franchise to open within pretty short distance of each other. While it is the first, really good poke shop to arrive in the neighborhood (sorry, Sushi House), to have the exact same place open up about a mile away is both bizarre and ... a bit more convenient as it's closer to my house. Regardless, until that closer one opens its doors, I'm sure I'l be back a few more times to enjoy quality poke. read more

I came here 2 weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it. That's some seriously tasty poke for me to think about it that long. If I were still tasting it 14 days later, that would be a problem. But delicious bowls of goodness in my brain, that's a solid 5 stars. I haven't had a poke bowl in a long time. The last time was probably in Maui pre-COVID and this one didn't disappoint. The selection of goodies to add into the bowl was top notch. I especially appreciated that I wasn't paying extra for a seaweed salad which I'd normally order at a Japanese restaurant. The hot was... HOT. Seriously. Extra sweaty, 3 napkin soaked. And that's just as one would want. However take that as a bit of advice: the spicy tuna combined with hot sauce... might wanna think twice. Hold the jalapeños. The fish was fresh. I even opted for scallops which can be hit or miss. Delicious. Loved the flavor, fresh smell, fresh consistency and bite. Finally, lets talk quantity. This bowl took me a solid 20 minutes to eat. It's huge. I would ask for X, Y, Z expecting a small bit of each and they'd heap a huge spoonful in there. I think there was a magic compartment at the bottom of the bowl that held it all. Last note: the bowl is compostable. I compost at home and this was an awesome bonus. In a mid-COVID world when every restaurant cheaps out and gets styrofoam in the name of "safety" it's nice to have these guys spend the extra $0.05 to get a great compostable bowl. But it's definitely my least favorite poke place. I feel like I've walked into an LA ghetto. The employees act like this is their first day on their first job. I get the feeling the owner just has his friends come in to do the job. They are really clueless about poke, and they lack any customer service. The seaweed salad has gluten in it. This place has been consistently good the couple times I've ordered delivery from them. Even with delivery orders the bowl is on the verge of overflowing. The weight of the bowl is hefty even with a spring salad base so you know your getting a substantial meal. The fish so far has been good, no off putting fishy odors. Love this restaurant, but I have some complaints. For starters, the food is always good, the fish always seems to be fresh, and I've never had any issues with the quality of their ingredients. That being said, let me explain why I am giving only 3 stars. The reason for this is because I primarily order from this restaurant off DoorDash, and more often than not, they forget to include ingredients that I have requested. Once, it was avocado. Another time, an extra scoop of the imitation crab. Today, they forgot to put any sauce in the bowl, when I requested 2 different kinds. While I did not technically lose any money over this ommission, it left the bowl very bland tasting. I am a very picky eater, and very particular with my food flavors, and this sort of thing irks me. Here's hoping this review will spur management to get their employees to pay more attention to future orders, as none of these requests are "special" requests, they are simply selected options in the DoorDash menu, and are easily seen as registered on the receipt that comes with the food once delivered. read more

I did not realize this was open until I drove by on my way to try out another place. I made a u-turn and found a parking spot. I've had poki poki in Oceanside (I think it's the same place) and it was delicious and the owners were a super sweet couple . For some reason I thought they had expanded to another place. Franchise I guess. Well they were very busy. People inside and outside sitting with their bowls of yummy. The line was long but looked like it was moving pretty fast. I was greeted by a very friendly server. He was all smiles which made me smile( smiles are contagious. Everyone should try it) I ordered a regular bowl and went to town ordering my Greens, spicy tuna, spicy ahi and shrimp. He asked how I wanted it, well I told him to go heavy on the spice. Lots of cucumber and red onion, garlic, jalapeños, dried seaweed and masago and a few other items I do not remember.
