I ordered lunch delivery with a few people from my office, so this is purely about the food and delivery. The delivery came in the time frame that we expected and the food was still warm (we're about 20 blocks away from the place). We all got various lunch specials - I got the curry lamb and got to try some of my co-workers' chicken tika. The lamb was tender, though I wish there was more curry. There were maybe 6 medium chunks of lamb meat, rice, two small pieces of Nan, some chutney, and some salad (in a small bag). The chutney was good, with a sweet-sour-onion taste. The Nan was a bit plain, and I didn't have enough curry to eat it with. It was kind of strange to get salad in a bag though. My co-workers' chicken tika was a bit bland and didn't come with any sauce. We also got the vegetable samosas, and although there were only two they were huge. I thought they were a bit bland however. The value for lunch at least is great - it's pretty hard to get lunch for $6 anywhere. 3/8/2017 I walked in exactly at 12pm when they open, the buffet had a few dishes prepared and space for 4 more which weren't ready. There's lots of seating and only one other customer. They had many to go orders while I sat and waited for my lunch meat lunch box. I met the owner's son at the counter, he was very polite, and told me this restaurant is a family operation and it's been here for 11 years. I ordered the lamb curry with mixed vegetables. It came with rice, half of naan bread, small salad and a condiment. The lunch box had a generous portion of stewed tender lamb, which I asked be made spicy, but instead it wasn't spicy at all, however it tasted okay with pickled onions they gave. The vegetable curry was a mix of carrots and cabbage, it was also very mild, but also tasted okay. While I waited, I also ordered a mango lasso, which was perfect, and a ras malai (dessert), which I should have skipped cause it didn't taste fresh, the milk was beginning to thicken. The salad was fresh and the naan was soft as it should be. Overall, it took about 10 minutes to prepare my order and the total was less than $15. There aren't many options for Indian/Pakistani/Bengali food in this neighborhood so I'm happy this place is still here. The menu is so plentiful it always takes me about 15 minutes to decide what I want. They have lunch/dinner specials as well as a buffet, which I'm sure is not open due to COVID19. While they are tables and chairs set up, I've never seen any patrons. It always seems to be empty but that's the case with most places since the COVID19 shutdown. Wanting to try a new Indian place, my friend and I just ordered delivery from Polash. Our entrees were completely inedible. The paneer makhani was gritty and had an unsettling texture. The butter chicken came in a gray sauce that was sickeningly sweet and also had that same unsettling texture. The chicken was rubbery and flavorless. We threw both of them away and ordered another meal from one of our regular spots. The samosas and naan were edible, but not great. As someone who eats a lot of Indian food, this is by far the worst I have ever had. Even the frozen Indian dinners you buy at the grocery store are far superior to this. This place is amazing, such a large variety of food, and so well done. I'm obsessed with naan, but ordering from here I found paratha, a more buttery bread, that is so delicious, it is my new love. I enjoy the bhuna dishes a lot, but honestly, so far, we haven't had anything we weren't happy with, and have ordered delivery various times. You could probably just close your eyes and point randomly on the menu at something and it would be bomb. Very tasty, large portions, and it comes with lentils and rice, as well as various chutneys. Polash is my go to spot when craving Indian Food. Being in East Harlem, this is the only Indian restaurant that actually has a decent menu and more importantly good tasting food. I normally order take out but they also have a decent sized sit down restaurant. The ambiance may not be the best (aka for a date) but the service is good. They also have a full bar (or so it seems). Came across this amazing restaurant as I conducted a yelp search for " Indian Cuisine in Harlem" and it was the best choice. My hunny and I went around 8pm on a Saturday and it was so intimate and lovely. The staff were attentive and made sure we were comfortable. We ordered vegetable samosas and lentil soup as a starter- delicious. The samosas were perfectly crisp and the lentil soup- to die for! ( Def one of my fav lentil soups thus far) As for entrees, we decided to share since the portions were pretty big. We went for the Chicken Biryani which came with Dal. We were stuffed and satisfied. We absolutely recommend this restaurant. You get the feel as if you are eating with family but yet still experience an intimate setting. Can't wait to visit again! read more

Nothing Special, I have tried a few items of there menu & majority of the time it's been a disappointment. One of there supposedly spiciest curry, ain't even that spicy! Chicken Vindaloo Very hot curry Definitely false advertisement! A Indian spot that don't know how to do spicy, what a shame! First off, I would like to point out that Polash is a BENGALI restaurant and not an Indian one like they claim. I guess its easier to attract customers when you put "Indian Restaurant" on the banner rather than Bengali because most people dont even know where Bangladesh is. Having said that, I would like to start off by saying that I live in Queens and I visit this place all the way in Harlem just to get a taste of their Chicken Biriyani. Now I have tasted really good chicken biriyani, I live blocks away from Jackson Heights where there are so many different Bengali restaurants to choose from. Yet I go back to Polash for more of their biriyani. I dont know what it is but its different tasting. Its creamy and they will make it mild or spicy depending on your preference. Their appetizers, shrimp cury, chicken liver with poori, daal, vegetable korma chicken biriyani, garlic naan and kheer. These are the items that I have tasted in my last 3 or 4 visits to the place. I would recommend every dish. Oh and the prices are very reasonabe too, and the only reason I didnt give them 5 stars is because the restaurant could use a bit of indoor decorating and the location isnt oneof my favorite places to be. Living in Harlem has its upsides--high ceilings for less, access to east and west express trains--but few cuisine options is one of the biggest downsides (not to mention that 90% of my friends live in Brooklyn. Fucking hipsters.). My young man loves Indian food, and happened upon this place after extensive hopeful research to find good delivery options. Now we order from Polash about once every two weeks. The food comes quickly, is always piping hot (how do they do that?), is plentiful enough for two meals, and averages about $8-9 an entree. The Vindaloo is hot hot hot, the Kashmiri is sweet and satisfying, the naan crispy and soft. Each order comes with three sauces, a small lentil soup (bonus!) and free tupperware. I probably do take away from Polash once a week and mostly for lunch. Their meat box comes with a generous portion of chicken breast in a spicy curry sauce, a side veg and basmati rice with saffron oil and ghee. They also include a small handful of iceberg lettuce "salad" and two small pieces of naan. For $5.95 you just can't beat it. Is always enough food for two meals. I've tried the lunch buffet $9.95. A lot of food. Consistently fresh, non-oily, B- quality. Beef is too dry. All the veggie curries are on point. The Chicken tandoori is dry. But again it is so affordable and it's good enough that I don't mind. For dinner entrees things can add up if you like to try a variety of options. The mattar paneer - cheese and peas in a creamy spicy tomato based broth, mushroom saag - mushroom and spinach and the okra are my go to vegetarian option. The mattar paneer is a different color every time I order it. Sometimes red, sometimes yellow. I usually order a paratha a rich slightly sweet fried flatbread, instead of naan. The chicken soup ($2.50) is more of a lentil broth with chicken pieces. The only thing consistent about it is the extreme level of saltiness. I still order it often and just add boiling water at home. The chutneys are good but not great. Tamarind is watery as is the Hari chutney (cilantro/mint) is also watery. The onion is great. The decor is dark, old, musty red vinyl but somehow cozy? I disagree with Yelper that says they should serve brown rice. If you want to cut down on refined carbs don't eat them or if you must have ethnic restaurants whitewash their cuisine to cater to whatever American palate, dietary trend, whim then you can try Hampton Chutney in Soho. Also, a lot Yelpers refer to a certain dish as Marsala. Marsala is an Italian Sherry used for cooking. Masala is a mixture of spices like peppercorns, mace, cinnamon, cloves, brown cardamom, nutmeg, and green cardamom. Masala...please - just remember no R. Last but not least the menu is somewhat unintelligible if you don't know Indian food. For example, Shrimp Bhuna is described as "shrimp cooked with onion, tomato in a spiced flavored sauce" and then you have Shrimp Rogan "shrimp cooked with all kind of spice garlic with top on fried onion and tomato". Cute but a little nondescript. Polash is pretty good, authentic-ish, slightly over salted Indian food. I wouldn't go out of my way but since it is 100 ft from my place, I don't have to. read more

Wooohooo! A restaurant that delivers to my apartment in Spanish Harlem! Wow! And they're Indian, and very nice! And they have 31 vegetarian options. 31...wow! Okay, so I happened on this restaurant browsing forlornly through menupages trying to find an excuse not to cook, and not to go out in the rain. I stumbled on this gem, and I'm SO glad I did. I called and ordered and had my delivery in about 25 minutes. It was quick, it was friendly, and the food was JUST the right temperature when it arrived! I asked for suggestions on the phone (something I picked up from an ex) and he suggested lots of things. I ended up with cauliflower and chickpeas in an almond coconut sauce. Quite good! I forgot how much I like Indian restaurant food. It tastes different than the Indian I make at home. And the rice was so wonderful! For those that live in Harlem, you know that solid delivery options are slim pickings. From rude service to inconsistent cooking to botched up orders to the dial tone when you tell a business where you live, it's a tough go getting solid delivery. Polash is the absolute exception to this rule. From the very first time you call, you feel like you are in good hands. The gentleman that answer the phone are attentive, polite and gracious. They are quick and courteous. They are exceptionally polished. Why is this not the standard everywhere? Polash makes their curries to order and to whatever spice level you'd like it, with the mild still flavorful and the super spicy tasty and full of complex tastes. Portions are huge and shareable and the breads are perfectly soft and pliable when they arrive. Favorites are plain naan, aloo paratha and the onion kulcha. Entrees to die for are the vindaloo, the korma, the lamb seekh kebab and the tandoori chicken. Samosas are light and crispy and the lassi are creamy and manage to travel well. Above all, the delivery guys are fast! And they take credit cards! At this point I'm gushing, but really, they deserve all the praise. Harlem deserves more great businesses like Polash. Polash is a hidden gem all the way in Spanish Harlem. I think they cook Southern Indian/Kerala styled foods (because they have alot of fish dishes prevalent to Kerala) Delivery is lightening fast. Eating in at the restaurant can be plain awkward because you're the only one there, but they seem interested in saying "all we have is the buffet" and service is very laid back (think 3-hour meal on Goan time)...so if you want to be attended to, don't go except during dinner time. If you like long lunches without being pushed, do go for lunch. For East Harlem, Polash is a God sent if curry is your comfort food. After 3-years of ordering from Polash, here are my hits and misses from literally eating my way through the entire menu: 1. best Mulligatany soup (have tried every Indian restaurant in midtown east and UES for this and they all fail). Polash's is tangy with mashed chickpeas (or poss. gram flour?) and cilantro. It seems to get better overnight, especially with extra squirts of lemon juice. I crave it everytime I get sick. 2.Avoid the coconut cinannamon soup--it's literally a hot brew of sweet coconut milk with grated bits of coconut meat, and doesn't taste savoury...it tastes like almond joy soup. 3. the Muglai paratha is my favorite. It's a filling lead-belly hang over meal (street snack in Asia--similiar to a kati roll and omlette in one). Their version is loaded with curried ground beef, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, peas, onions, and peppers. They do it so well in comparison to other Muglai parathas. 4. My favorite curry has a vindaloo curry base. Before my favorites have been madras curry, jalpreji, bhuna, dopizia, and the rogan josh. Polash does all the curry sauces well (and fiery). I have a biased love for red tomato based curries, which they do very well with my favorite curry meat: goat or beef or lamb. They do other sauces like sabji chicken well but I just don't love them as much as I love tomato based curries. 5. The kurma sauced dishes are creamy and delicious, esp. chicken kurma (my bf, who can't tolerate spicy foods can and will only eat kurma or malai, and Polash always makes a silky smooth sauce without clottage) 6. their biryani is okay..just okay. I prefer the Burmese version of biryani, which is wetter, more nutty biryani with more meat and curry and lots of fried onions melted into a curry, which is sauced into the rice and baked with the rice (and theirs is dry and isn't loaded with dried fruits and nuts like my mom's). So compared to mom's, Polash fails for being bland and dry. 7. my obsession for the past 4 months has been their crab curry. I've stopped ordering meat vindaoo and have been obsessed with trying different curries with their crab. Polash gives you a generous amount of lump crab meat in a red tomato-based harmonious curry sauce. (the crab curry is no. 1 on the crab curry list. The crab saag, I didn't like. The crab sabj I hated, but if you want milk and creamy, you'll like it. crab malai/kurma? No thanks. biryani-nope) For vegetarians: 1. My favorites are the two okra curries (with the bindi bhajee being my absolute favorite okra dish, rather than the bindi masala dish) 2.Aloo mutter gobi: didn't like it or hate it but found pineapples in there when the menu listed cauliflowers and chickpeas (but then I don't like white cream sauces since I like red tomato based curries with lots of spice) Also order a coconut, pistachio, or mango lassi (or any of their other ones) to cool your taste buds with (those are my favorites). Eating dairy alongside spicy curry dishes keeps your mouth from getting overheated by the spices. Theirs is salty, tangy, sweet, with crushed ice and is a flavor exposion in your mouth. I endure splotchy faced dairy allergy attacks for their lassi shakes...they're THAT good. Try the kulfi ice cream if you can make it to the restaurant. If you care for ricotta cheese based desserts, try those little balls of sugar syrup covered desserts like gulab jamoon and wash them down with lots of masala tea or earl/lady grey tea. I don't like their Kher (rice pudding with mango or coconut) because it sometimes has a stale and sour taste. In Indian restaurants, you won't find fresh desserts so expect stale gulab jamoon and ker. *exhale* As you've read, I've literally eaten through the entire menu. read more

Polash is great! I order delivery from time to time, and Polash is fast, and they take cards. As the others say, prices and serving size is reasonable. The food is high quality, not greasy - in my book Polash is a win. I have ordered all sorts of things, and it's all delicious. They have a wide variety of Naan (e.g. plain, with minced lamb, or dried fruits) but I really loved the various kulchas. I highly recommend Paswari Naan, and the onion kulcha. With a so many choices (including fish, vegetarian, crab, lamb and goat) - I try my best to order different things each time, but I notice that me and my significant ordering the Lamb or Goat Rogan Josh and Kashmiri Lamb more consistently than other dishes. Polash also serves Chicken Tikka Masala, but I think you're better of ordering something different because there are dishes served here that I haven't seen at other places. I don't think Tikka Masala should be the point of comparison between Indian restaurants because I have eaten Tikka Masala in both the US and UK (England and Scotland) and honestly, it tastes different wherever I am. That said, even though I don't know know exactly how it *should* taste, I still enjoyed it from Polash. I haven't been to the restaurant for a sit-down meal, but hope to in the near future. My Trinidad man who is part Indian descent and I Went to my brother Joey's to return his dogs after dog-sitting for a week. After spending an hour at my brother's apartment, we got hungry. We thought about going to a well known place and decided we wanted something local and reasonable. I said let me look on Yelp. Always trusting yelps reviews, I saw a restaurant with 4 stars by the name of "Polash." When we arrived, we waited to be seated and a young humble gentleman,by the name of "Rohman," greeted us and took us to a table by the window as we requested. He was very polite and accomomodating. We started out with the Samosas, one chicken and one vegetarian appetizer, which were very tasty and delicious. Our entree consisted of the okra vegetarian and the chicken vindaloo, a very spicy but tasty entree, which were awesome! Rohman's service was attentive and first rate! Will definitely go back after we go to visit my brother Joey and his dogs Max and Smash in Manhattan! P.S.: Also as a side note the bathrooms are immaculate! Indian and Thai restaurants in NYC break my heart again and again. I'll tell you why: I go in expecting something interesting and exciting, and the vast majority of the time, they serve some Americanized, saucy, over-seasoned crap. When I find something that breaks the mold, something that actually tastes different and interesting, I get so excited that I try to eat at that place as much as possible. Which brings me to Polash. It's just not breaking the mold. My husband and I made our way from Inwood to East Harlem (no easy trek, mind you) and by the time we got there, we were ready to eat. The place was fairly depressing - weird pink walls, those standard Taj Mahal paintings, and some soporific music playing - but I could forgive all the decor no-nos if the food was fabulous (indeed, Yelp had led me to believe that it would be). We started with the chana chaat, which was literally some chickpeas, tomatoes, and onions with some tamarind sauce on top -- this was just not the real thing (Polash, don't you guys have, like, a chana chaat masala?!). Then we had the chicken saag (standard, gooey, a little too creamy), basic daal (absolutely fine), and, the horror of the night, bhindi. Now, anyone who knows okra knows that it has to be fresh. The moment okra ages, it gets hard and weird and the texture becomes just unbearable. This okra had definitely seen better days (probably about a week before it arrived at Polash) and even my husband, who is normally Mr. Okra Eater, passed on it. All of this to say, I would not recommend making a trip to East Harlem for oily saag and spoiled okra. read more

The only reason Polash doesn't get 5 stars is because the restaurant itself isn't that pleasing. Don't get me wrong - the food is delicious, the prices are good, and the service is prompt - it's just always empty and the decor isn't particularly homey or comfortable. I've eaten in the restaurant twice and ordered delivery once - the food was always tasty. I've ordered the samosas, chicken and paneer tikka masala, saag paneer, lamb vindaloo and the aloo mutter gobi kurma. I've had their regular nan and the garlic nan - both good. I live about 4 blocks away and ordered delivery at 9pm on a Sunday. They were at my door in 20 minutes. Ordering was easy and everything came as asked and FREE DELIVERY, no minimum. This lovely spot is always empty but generates huge takeout because of its excellent food. Contrary to some reviews, the heat level here will BLOW YOUR CRANIUM OFF if you ask for extra spicy. They will also accomodate vegans by using oil instead of ghee if you ask. A range of good Indian beers is available, they have about 30 vegetarian options (the bindi bhajee (okra) is superb), as are nearly all the others. Try hanging out here too. Polash is consistently delicious with friendly service and a menu that suits a diverse array of tastes and dietary preferences. My partner and I love having this cute little restaurant so close to our apartment and eat here frequently enough that the staff knows us and our tastes well. I love the lamb vindaloo and the BF goes mad for their meat platter. It's not Chaiwali and it's not trying to be, so don't expect anything fancy. Just great comfort food for a cold rainy night. Polash is our Indian delivery of choice. It's cheap, fast and not too oily. Free rice and dal too. Why 3 stars then? Because like a lot of other places, it seems to be run by Bangladeshis, and the food is not authentically Indian. This was my second Indian food experience..and it was an excellent experience. Came here on a friday night, it was dead but that meant our table got all the attention from the waitstaff. We ordered apps Vegetable Somosa-breading mixed vegetables, garlic Nan--which was packed a punch with flavor, and 2 orders of Tandoori-mild & medium. The food was fresh, flavorful, decent portion sizes, and def hit the spot. Place itself is big but yet a neighborhood friendly spot, nice decor. Service was A++ all the way to the end. Possibly the worst butter chicken and chicken tikka i've ever eaten. Chicken was completely under cooked, curry was bland and chicken tikka was burnt. We ordered delivery from Polash and it took exactly 25 minutes to get here, pretty speedy if you ask me. I ordered based on the two reviews from Kat and Leo, since they seemed to really like it. Nice guy taking order, nice delivery guy. On to the food: it was delicious.. we had lamb saag and butter chicken. It was hot, and very good. I am really surprised by how high this restaurant was rated. This was my first NY Indian experience so far. And I am from a place which is dominated by all kinds of different Indian people and restaurants (Fremont, CA) Polash was a huge disappointment. The lunch buffet selection was weak, the curries were watery, the chicken dry, the yogurt not fresh, and the vegetable curry seemed like they used the mixed bag of vegetables from the frozen section. The not quite redeeming qualities were the fresh naan and decent beef curry. Sorry Harlem, you're gonna have to step up your Indian cuisine. read more

Polash is so good. Very tasty and fresh. And the variety on the menu - thirty different vegetarian dishes! You can't beat that. Excellent lunch special - one star off considering this is East Harlem, and they have a total monopoly on the neighborhood, it's pretty expensive for what it is. I will keep ordering anyhow. read more

This place is fast becoming my favorite pickup / delivery in the hood. My bf typically orders their delicious Chicken mushroom curry, and I've order mixed vegetable curry and Saag Paneer. Each time I try something new It just keeps getting better. From the 3 times we ordered, it took them no time to prepare and food always arrived hot, well prepared and well flavored. I especially like how they cooked their basmati rice with various spice to enhance the flavor. The delivery always come with a serving of lentil soup and the trio of cilantro chutney / tamarind chutney / marinated onions. Keep up the good work and I hope they will be around for a very long time. read more
