I had a taste for golumpki on Sunday, but wasn't hungry enough when we left the Winter Blast to stop in Hamtown. I had been here a year or so ago, but just to browse. So what started as a simple journey for stuffed cabbage ended with spinach and cheese pierogi, polish dill pickles and some kinda red pepper paste something or another. Stuffed cabbage was good but not as good as my moms. The pieorgi was really good, will definitely get some more. Pickles were ok, kinda sweet, haven't tried the red pepper paste yet. Whats with all the cartoon Bear's on all the packages? I'm part polish and I don't understand that eastern European fetish. read more

The first part of this review is ONLY for the pickle soup that I had there while on a shopping trip from Midland earlier this week. I grew up in Poland and the pickle soup I had there brought back waves of nostalgia for me about the pickle soup my mother prepared for the family decades ago. It was utterly delicious. Five stars without a doubt and I wish I had taken a big container home with me. I have had their pickle soup before and while it was good, it was not as good as it is now. So kudos, for the nice improvement. Now moving on to my other comment. There are two kinds of people working at this store, native Polish speakers and people of other nationalities who are non-Polish speaking. In our previous visits, there were only the former working there, but on this visit there were quite a few of the latter. The great pity of this is that dealing with the other nationalities people at the store is a pleasure; they are courteous, helpful, and welcoming. Dealing with the Polish employees, on the other hand, is a throw-back to the pre-fall-of-communism days in state-run stores in Poland where the help was rude and dearly wished you would just go away and leave them alone. Sorry, but with precious few exceptions, that is how it is. Management needs to point out to some of the employees that customers are a necessary part of them getting paid and you really should be nice to them. read more

Went here recently to gather up some polish goodies to make my man a polish meal fit for a king. The hot deli items are awesome! the saurkraut with chunks of meat was not too sour and had a very earthy seasoning that paired really well with the polish sausages and city chicken I made that night. My only regret is that I didn't get the perogies from here! They were a much better deal i think 12 for 2.99 in the frozen section. I would have given this place 5 stars but their duck soup was a total disappointment. I remember the duck soup i had at Polonia in Detroit, and this was nothing like that... not even close. The soup tasted like black bean water with soggy noodles and.... raisins?? It was just bad. But overall they have a great deli/bakery, friendly customers and staff. Love the Polish Market! I'm 100% Polish, and this is where we go to get our Polish "supplies" so to speak. You'll find great lunch/deli meat here you may not find at other places, and the smoke sausage selection is great. The breads are good, and they have an awesome variety of dry/canned food. I don't get a lot of the hot food that is already prepared since my mother can make it better herself, but the times that I have seen it, it looks ok. Love this shop. I was there yesterday with my Granddaughter and we bought our Easter sausage, breads, sauerkraut, and many other items. The store is like a trip to Poland, many people speak polish in the store and so many fods, spices and teas from Poland. The meat shop is wonderful and the bakery is fabulous. We had a good time and enjoyed the items we bought. We noticed the Polka restaurant next door and that's on the agenda to bring the family there. read more

As the name implies, Polish Market should have been a great choice for Paczki right? No so much. At 8:00am Tuesday they seemed fairly busy, filling the baskets with "fresh" pacski while people were filling their boxes. The first thing I noticed was a very small selection. Custard, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, rosehip and an abundance of prune. When I got them home and grabbed a raspberry filled, it was dry and cold. I don't mean cold like room temp, (I wasn't expecting them to be hot or even warm). I mean cold like it had recently be thawed. Like a donut left in the refrigerator for a week. What a disappointment. And at $1.19 each?! Went back out to Kroger and got some good ones. $2.99 for 4. read more

Purchased some last minute items for holiday meal and this was my first visit. Loved the selection and hard to find items in this store. I could have gotten lost in the butcher/meat market counter- so many wonderful looking items. I highly would recommend this store to everyone, whether of Polish descent or not. read more

It was pork sausage heaven. They have homemade soup selections (dill pickle, borscht, tomato, mushroom barely... etc), about 5 brands of pierogies as well as tons of varieties, various desserts, and fresh produce. Did I mention the several aisles of pickled things? I've never seen so many varieties of pickled beets, pickles, kraut in my life! The glompki are dead on, the fried pork cutlet is delish, and the kraut is fantastic. The only non-winner was their filled crepes, they were old and rubbery. It was kolackies for the win. read more

I grew up on Hungarian food and I married a German so I come here often for my shopping. I will often need some obscure ingredient for a family recipe or bread that my husband wants. This is the place to go. If you get anything from the deli make sure you specify which "ham" "turkey" "salami" etc. my German mother in law forgot to and got a very expensive salami. You walk in and it smells like your grandma's kitchen (well for me it does) and that is a wonderful thing. It's not a replacement for the eastern market in Hamtramck, but it does have most of what you are looking for. read more

Coming from a Ukrainian family, it is very difficult to find good east European food ANYWHERE in the metro Detroit area. There have been many small Ukrainian, Polish, Russia and other small markets which have come and gone, not able to survive in this area. So, the next best thing is to look to our neighbors to the north and west (depending on which era of history our allies, our enemies or friends) for our culinary supplies. (Ukrainian and Polish food is very similar and often overlap each other, depending on what part of Ukraine you are from. My family happens to be from a city not too far from the Polish border so this is right up our alley). This place has a great selection of east European foods! Lots of ethnic specialties, a bakery area, a wonderful meat area that even has the Ukrainian specialty "salo" (basically rendered pork fat), and a wide choice of drinks and candy from the area. The have a "fast food" area where you can buy some ready made Polish foods, which is nice as well. Around the holidays this place is packed because it is one of the few places that sells ingredients for traditional Christmas dishes, or for those who are lazy or just can't cook, they sell them ready made. Almost all of my Ukrainian friends come to shop here for their food, if not during the normal year, then definitely during the holidays. There are scattered Polish and Ukrainian stores in the Hamtramck area, but now that most east Europeans have moved out of the are and into the northern suburbs, this is the place to go! The only downfall to this place is the parking. Today I dropped my mother off at the front door and looked to park/idle somewhere. In looking for a spot I nearly ran over or hit 3 people that I personally know, which means: A) this place is the real deal and has everything you need for a proper Ukrainian/Polish/(insert east European culture here) Christmas dinner and B) the parking lot is atrocious, so WATCH OUT! If you want good Polish/Ukrainian food, this is the place to go. Don't be intimidated by this place (sure some of the signs are in Polish but most of the employees speak English). The only bad thing about the east European diet is that if you are carb conscious or want lean meats...this may not be for you. Use this as your opportunity for your cheat meal. Must suggestions: If you want a real taste of eastern Europe get some salo or seltseson(not sure of the English spelling but it is a pork fat product), Barszcz or Borscht (beet soup) or if they have them chrusciki (Polish deep fried dessert) read more

I used to love this place. This was the only store (or restaurant for that matter) where I could find, prepared, hot & ready to serve kotlety mielone, one of my favorite foods. Well, I was here a few days ago and found this dish is now, non-existant. Not only is the kotlety gone, but when I asked the Polish girl behind the counter what happened, she looked at me like I was crazy and said she's worked there for a year and a half and they never had it (wrong, this is the only place I could get it!). From her strange behavior I felt she didn't even know what it was that I was asking for and I had to show it to her on my phone! Even after showing her, it was as If I magically created a webpage on the fly and was trying to somehow "punk" her into believing this made up food. Whatever.The rudeness was off the charts. I get the feeling that all of the oddly stuck up Polish girls working here are olny here because momma and pappa are forcing them. All the workers now have a very, Paris Hilton sort of vibe and attitude. Aloof and discontented is the only real way to describe the staff. So unless you know exactly what you are looking for or are a native polish speaker, better know what you want, get it yourself and get out. I still like to purchase their frozen pierogi which are good, but the new brand whose name escapes me at the moment are not as good as the "Polish prince" brand they stocked before. As all of the polish cooks in my family are now long gone, so are the days of enjoying my favorite foods. I'll still come here now and then for this and that, but it's certainly nothing what it used to be. I've yet to find a real Polish restaurant in lower east Michigan, that takes pride in their food and is not the equivalent of Chinese American. All those who might suggest that I go to Hamtramck to find real Polish food, you are 25 years too late. I guess I'll have to look into train tickets to Chicago... read more

In honor of dear old Dad, who loved this place, I met my sister here last Friday to buy groceries for a family dinner. The soups (just inside the doorway, in the refrigerated case to the right) all looked appealing. For lunch, I purchased and really liked the Barley, with a few slices of toasted bread from Rudolf's. For supper, we purchased three varieties of sausage (all very good off the grill), and potato-and-cheddar pierogies (very good and rich). We also enjoyed people watching, including the ethnic grandmother who refused to believe that a cashier's line was closed, and made sure she was served, no matter the consequences. Reminded me a little bit of my German Oma. The only misstep by the PM was our dessert. The baked goods counter looked wonderful, but we decided to bypass a monster cake, and buy a few varieties by the slice, offered in plastic containers in another refrigerated case. Unfortunately, later that evening we found the slice of double chocolate mousse to be hopelessly dotted with spots of green mold. We suspect the stock in the refrigerated case is not turned over often enough. For meats, pierogies, and soup, or perhaps for a European who is craving something special from home, yes, go, shop, eat. read more

I took my Indian (the feathers kind) girlfriend here to buy some kielbasa. She really stood out and everyone looked at her like she was from Mars because everyone else in there is super duper Polish. This place is all right, but frankly, you can buy Dearborn sausage at regular grocery stores and that's about the same quality as what they've got here, so it's not a huge deal unless you're nearby. They also have a section for stuff like Polish toothpaste, but why would specifically want Polish Crest? The American kind works just as well. My dentist told me so. read more

Great selection of Polish foods - packaged, frozen, and prepared. Some of the staff doesn't speak English, but they are usually willing to find someone who does if you have questions. Though I understand others' reviews - sometimes they seem very unhappy that I don't speak Polish and seem grumpy to help me. But I don't think it's really personal - they mostly are only friendly to their friends or clients they know, but they are not always that friendly with Polish-speaking strangers either. I think their prepared food is inconsistent on taste, and mostly not good - I find their baked goods especially awful, though the selection is good but limited. I'm never disappointed with my Polish Market purchases. The best authentic polish sausage and pierogi I've ever had--even my Polish Buscia approved! Their paçzki are divine and much more convenient than driving to the heart of Hamtramck on Fat Tuesday. We also love the poppy seed rolls at Easter. It's a tradition to stop in during Holy Week to stock up on traditional fare for Easter breakfast. I've been shopping at he Polish Market for a number of years. Recently, on two occasions, I purchased the handmade golumpki. Both times the cabbage and juice were rancid! I brought the receipt back the last time and spoke to the manager and explained my situation. The Manager said that without bringing back the bad product, there was nothing she could do, store policy. After being a loyal customer for so many years, I thought they would cut me some slack, obviously not. Believe me, this was the last time I'll visit this store. read more

Friend was in the area and stopped in to buy sponge cake bottoms for fruit tarts. I previously purchased them there. She couldn't find them and was told they don't carry anything like that. Hmmm. Perhaps she didn't explain it clearly? I suspect she did, having seen it at my house. Did get a sense in that store that service is better if you are Polish. I love this place. That being said, today, the day before Paczki Day, I saw they were selling so I was buying. Got home and what a bummer. About a tablespoon of filling in them. You can eat 2/3rd of one before you even get close to custard. I'd do without before having these again. Still have a bunch for the family and I. Oh well. We were in there on Saturday and it was so packed, people were lined up to the back of the store for the checkout counters in front. The pastry line was also backed up. People were stepping on your feet, hitting people with their carts, and being generally rude. We bought some cookies off the shelves, and went to the cash only line, and it wasn't so bad. I will always go there because the meats and pastries Are always fresh and fantastic. But next time we'll go during the week. read more

Out of all Eastern European stores in metro Detroit area, this one has the most variety and professionalism. I am Russian and will boldly state that most Russians in metro Detroit do not cater to non-Russian clientele, which is absolutely ridiculous, paying customer is a paying customer. Other Eastern European stores are more business savvy, but do not have the one-stop-shop variety that Polish Market does. This is a place for all foodies, of all cultures. read more

I picked up some authentic paprika from Hungary for $3.59 for a tin, which I thought was a pretty good price for the amount I got. I wasn't going to write a review until I saw in the list of characteristics it says "good for kids". I'm not sure what about the market is good for kids, because there are no child seats in the relatively small carts, and so no way to take any child under about 5 We often go out of our way to go there when we are in the vicinity--we live quite a ways away--and yesterday we had our grandson who is nearly four. He is just too little to walk around a store like that without wanting to touch everything, yet there was no way to sit him in a cart. It seems the store would have a few carts with child seats in them...but I asked and they do not. I looked around then and saw there were no children in the market. I notice though that there were suckers and other candy at the check out counters to exploit the children that they don't want in their store. My grandson and I went out and sat in the car, and my husband bought a few things..much less than he would have purchased otherwise. If it had been up to me, we would have bought nothing. I doubt if we will be back. read more
