After living off of Ohlen for a few years now, I was accustom to the charbroiled chicken smell that would waft through the air from El Regio. Today I went there for the first time and wow, I should have visited sooner. The friendly man behind the counter helped me order in Spanglish, and he had the best smile. I got a chicken taco and some rice and could not believe the size of the taco. Dang! Glad I just ordered one. It was so tasty, but I couldn't finish it all. What a deal. This has become the one place that my roommate and I can always agree on. We're both gluttons, and for us to be stuffed into submission for $19 bucks is exceptionally rare. El Regio is a tiny walk up window next to a gas station. We almost always get the #1 (Whole rotisserie chicken) and the #7 (five beef tacos with onions and cilantro). It's ready in 5 minutes, it's cheap, and it's delicious. A whole chicken breast survived to seek refuge in the fridge until tomorrow, and we rarely leave survivors. That's a lot of food. read more

Man I LOVE Pollo El Regio! This is probably the best chicken I have ever tasted in my whole life. And that green sauce, to die for! I love to get the chicken, eat some off the bone, pick it off the bone, stuff into a tortilla, squeeze on some lime, add in some charred onion, top with that heavenly sauce, and pack it back! I actually walked up once and saw a guy in the back with a bucket and a mop-sized baster, practically pouring this evil looking red sauce all over the chickens on the grill. Now, I don't know what is in this sauce, but I'm pretty sure it's got crack in it, cause I have been hooked since I tried this place a couple of years ago. The chicken has always been quite juicy. The grilled onion-sometimes I just eat it by itself, but it has to be dipped in the "burn your face off" green sauce. I have also tried the al pastor tacos, and the beef fajita tacos, but the chicken is where it's at. Tip: Order 2 half chickens, that way you get twice the sides. It's pretty much the same price. I just put all the ingredients in my tortilla, including beans and rice. Squeeze lime all over it, add the sauces and your good to go. Just be aware-it can be quite addictive. read more

I don't honestly know what to make of this place. The green sauce is really good, yes. I'd bathe in it but then I'd be afraid someone would try and take a bite out of me. And their roasted chickens are very tasty. But tortillas shouldn't stick together like rice. And anything I've had besides the green sauce and chicken has been mediocre. I've recently started frequenting this particular chicken place because its close to home. 13 bucks for the number 1, which is a whole chicken, corn tortillas, a side of rice, a whole onion and a side of green and red sauce. I prefer the green sauce. Don't be chicken, order the chicken. They are always quick and cool about subbing out rice for more beans. The beans aren't remotely vegan, vegetarian, herbivore friendly, sometime I think that there is more meat than beans. -1 star because the beans aren't quite as good as pollo borracho off of north lamar. read more

Good Mexican food. Cheap and fast. Huge portions, enough to last you dinner tonight and perhaps a good hearty lunch tomorrow. However, this location takes cash only (we're in the 21st century now for christ's sake!) and there's nowhere to sit and eat. So after ordering a meal that smells absolutely delish, I have to either go and hide out in my car to scarf it down, which is not a pretty option since it can get messy...or drive home drooling on myself until I can reach a table top to spread everything out and make my damn tacos. El Regio is an awesome option for takeout. After ending up in the area, needing a quick dinner option to bring home, I turned to Yelp and quickly found El Regio. The location is sketchy, as others have pointed out, but push past that... the food is cheap and delicious. I went with the whole chicken package, and the beef carbon package, both with rice/beans/tortillas/salsas. Between watching the grills while I waited, and the drive home, smelling all that grilled goodness had my mouth was watering by the time I got home. Both packages came to $24, and easily fed 5 with some leftovers. The chicken was delicious, and had a great charcoal-grilled flavor. The spice rub in awesome, the green sauce is amazing....I only wish it came with more beans. I love those beans. Next time, I will order more for $1. They have some of the most intensely grilled/charcoal flavored chicken I've ever had (went for the half chicken meal and a papa regio). The baked potato was huge and had a ton of steak/cheese but I think next time I'll just go all in with a whole bird. I saw an El Regio trailer in a gas station parking lot in East Austin, and although it smelled WONDERFUL, I was a little skeptical about trying it out. Then I started noticing other locations around town, and the one time I decided to go, it was closed. Well, after reading the reviews on here and seeing that there was one in North Austin, I headed over there on Monday and ordered the whole chicken meal (#1). The chicken was a little dry (not too bad), but I'm not going to knock them for that as dry or not, the chicken had a GREAT flavor!! The beans were pretty phenomenal as well. The rice was just plain ol' rice. Nothing spectacular, but still good. I ordered extra green sauce since I see that plenty of people suggest you do so. Well, we only needed one sauce between the 2 of us. It was REALLY spicy!! Good, not great, but SPICY! And the roasted onion that comes with the chicken... Yum! It all went together so great. If I had to describe this, it'd be a cross between fajitas and rotisserie chicken. And...that's a really good thing. Juicy, extremely flavorful chicken with that smoky taste. The chicken ROCKS! We get this whole chicken meal pretty often. It's $13 total, a whole chicken cut into 8 pieces (2 breasts, 2 wings, 2 legs, 2 thighs). The roasted, seasoned, woody flavor is great. They also give you a cooked onion, lime (or half a lime, what-ev), rice, beans, tortillas, red salsa, and green sauce. PROS - chicken is freaking phenomenal. The rice is exactly what I like - very simple, soft, seasoned rice (I don't like hard rice that hasn't cracked open or rice that has a bunch of crap in it). CONS - the beans are pintos with meat seasoning and jalapenos. There aren't many beans once you remove the unedible meat, jalapenos, etc. I wish it was beanier (charro or fried - just more beans). the tortillas aren't the greatest, but, heck, this is Texas and most people have tortillas as a staple. A lot of people like the green suace but for me, it's ridicuously hot. I would rather pick up some salsa or guac from Julio's on Duval and use that with the chicken from here. The chicken is so good that sometimes I'll eat the chicken straight, no tortilla or anything else. The food would definitely satisfy hungry peeps. This place is definitely worth trying b/c the meats are better than exterior would lead you to believe. read more

I've always wanted to go to el Regio just to see what the heck it is. It's a hole in the wall Mexican place with no seating--just an order window. They got part of my order wrong, so I was bummed at first (I wanted chicken strips for the kids not a giant baked potato with beef and cheese!) but actually, the food is really good. The aforementioned giant baked potato was worth getting the order wrong to taste, and the quesadillas are the best I've ever had. Perfect. The portions are gigantic and it's pretty cheap. It's calories and cholesterol by the boatload, so I pledge to only go when I walk there, like I did last time. It's a couple of miles from my house, so that ought to balance out. But yeah, really geat quesadillas. You can't miss it, look for the plume of smoke and steady stream of customers. if you plan to go for lunch, skip breakfast. Words can not describe the amazingness of El Regio. If I could eat there for every meal I probably would. My boyfriend and I usually order the the half chicken, which is includes a half chicken, beans,rice, tortillas, grilled onion, and tasty salsa for $7. El Regio night usually goes something like this: load the dog into the back of the car and all go "for a ride" to pick up a tasty, easy dinner.We pull onto Ohlen Rd. and halfway down the street start to smell the delectable chicken waiting for us. The parking lot is tiny and is shared with mi tiendito, a convenience store great for grabbing drinks to go with your chicken. So pulling in and parking can sometimes be a trick, but it's no big deal because you wont be there for long. Step up to the window, order your chicken and you are on your way... fighting the smells and urge to rip into the chicken while in the car. It's a bit messy, which is why we wait until we get home to get everything spread out across the table and enjoy ourselves some delicious tacos. El Regio usually takes me from starving to stuffed in about 10 mins. Worth way more than $7! read more

This is within walking distance of our house, so when the 'rents are in town from either side of the family and no one feels like going out or cooking, I'm tasked with heading to El Regio and getting a chicken and a half. No fuss, no muss. The guy at the window is pleasant; he knows just enough English and I know just enough Spanish to order, so it's all good, and my order's ready in a couple minutes. Plenty of extras with the chicken, too, lots of beans, rice and tortillas. And super cheap. Everybody wins. Why have I not been here before? There is no legit answer as I always drive by and depending on which was the wind was blowing I have driven thru smoke thinking it sure smelled good after realizing the building wasn't on fire. The food was really good! It's a small place with a walk up window and bags of charcoal sitting out front. Spanish speaking but you can point at the menu if necessary. I got the carne asada taco ...it is huge, messy and delish! It is equals two tacos from other places. They toss in half a lime, the green sauce and I think it was $3.49 or close. I also bought the half chicken for later but had to sneak a bite. Chicken was really good . I like that they wrap it in butcher paper. Rice seemed average and the beans were tasty but if you have an aversion to fat you won't like them. I won't just drive by in the future. read more

I paid 4 bucks for a large chicken taco (with Green Sauce) and it was enough food to feed a small village in some third-world country. I swear there was an entire chicken on this thing. Flavor-wise, the taco was good, but not quite 5-star worthy IMO. The corn tortilla was really oily, and the chicken was a tad bit dry. The green sauce was quite good, but not as addicting as Crack Rock like I was expecting. Driving down the 183 access, I could smell Regio from my car. The billowy cloud of smoke coming from the small building was an undeniable draw even from half a mile away. I checked the Yelp reviews just to make sure I wasn't walking into a death trap and then parked in the wayyyy to small parking lot. First off, get the Carne Asada. If you're alone, that's honestly all you'll need...for two meals. You get a massive stack of tortillas, a boatload of meat, and quite possibly the most incredible green sauce ever. The green sauce really is what ties everything together. It's not too spicy (but still have a kick) and it really brings out the flavor of everything else. Since I was alone, I didn't order anything else, so I can't attest to the quality of the other menu items. I can say that what I did order ensured that I would be making a return visit. The service aspect is alright, but I did feel like an idiot when I ordered in English and the woman looked at me like I was a fool. Not that this detracts from the experience as much as it inspired me to say numero dos next time instead of the number 2. It turns out that it's not really a restaurant --- there are no seat or table, and people all have to wait for their food in the parking lot. The whole place is a kitchen, and customers order through a window and get food from the same window. Oh man! This place is awesome! The chicken is the best out there, get 1/2 chicken and it feeds 2 people. They cook a on charcoal, and the flavors are delicious. All chicken and beef burritos are good, the beef is not the best quality, its a little chewy, but for $4 I can't complain. This place is take out only, so you have to eat in your car or take out, I remember when this place was just a trailer on the road side, now they at least have a permanent structure.
