I experienced what can only be described as a bait‑and‑switch. I was shown an impressive 3‑pound lobster at $59 per pound right at my table. I selected it. What I ultimately received was, at best, a pound‑and‑a‑half lobster -- nowhere near what was presented or promised. We waited endlessly for cocktails, the service was merely adequate, and when I raised the issue with the maître d' -- I believe his name was Mario -- the explanation was that the lobster was "out of its shell," therefore it somehow wasn't the same size. As someone who regularly enjoys 3‑ to 6‑pound lobsters, I know exactly what a true 3‑pounder looks and feels like. The claws alone should be the equivalent of a hamburger. This was not that. Instead of acknowledging the mistake, he tried to justify it. The right response would have been simple: "I'm sorry -- I didn't think you'd notice. Let me refund the full amount of the lobster." That would have been the end of it. This was my first visit, on my birthday no less, and it will be my last. The confrontation was unnecessary, the explanation insulting, and the experience deeply disappointing. When I meet the lobster I'm supposed to eat, I know the difference -- and this was absolutely not the lobster I was shown. This was truly a bait and switch. read more

We had high hopes for our dinner but left disappointed. Parking was extremely limited, and when my daughter went to retrieve something from the car, the valet aggressively told her to move it or it would be towed. While I stepped out to help her -- leaving our coats and my purse to show we'd be right back -- our table was reassigned without notice. They offered another spot inside the piano bar, but it would've placed us among standing guests, so we were moved to a far corner away from the music. By then, the experience had soured. We stayed only because it was already late, ordered a couple of plates, and ended up taking most of it to go. Overall, the handling of the situation felt inconsiderate and unprofessional. read more

The restaurant disappointed. The special Dover Sole, though beautifully plated, was over soaked in butter sauce detracting from the delicacy of the fish. The other special, half duck in cherry glaze was a real disappointment. The glaze emulsified on the plate forming globs - think canned cranberry sauce. The duck itself was bland. The leg was dark meat and had only a slight gamey flavor. I did not finish the portion. They had a solid duo on piano and bass but their placement in the bar area with a six top and three four tops plus bar patrons made for a very noisy experience and nearly impossible to balance the amplification of the musicians and instruments and also hear oneself was really tricky. Polpo has a loyal regular following, so I think the devotees have made peace with the overall set up. For newbies (I have been less than 8 times), it might be a pass. I have been several times to Polpo and so my average score would be a 3. Price to Value is not there. read more

I had a lovely dinner with my sisters for an early Mother's Day treat. Overall the food was really good 8 out of 10, the octopus appetizer was on point, oysters were delicious. Chicken was cooked perfectly. I felt a little rushed to place the order as our waiter seem impatient with us. For the amount of money we spent and didn't feel our waiter deserved 20% but we still tipped 20% bc the other staff where helpful. The lady who was busing the tables were super kind, nice and prompt. We made last minute reservations and was lucky to get in within 30-45 min. Thankful they were able to accommodate us. I would come back when I'm in town but will definitely remember the waiter and will request another waiter. read more

Had a good time, used to come a lot growing up in Greenwich, however after this most recent experience I don't believe I'd be returning. I forgot to get a copy of the bill so that I could expense it, when I contacted the restaurant I was connected with a nasty woman named Vanessa who berated me when I asked about getting a copy. She told me that it would take up to two weeks to contact me about the bill, if they decided to at all. They've obviously lost their touch in several departments, as seen by the fact that the restaurant was never more than a quarter full the entire night. read more

Came here on a Saturday night with my guest from Hartford. We got a completely different menu than the rest. There is no pasta on the menu in an Italian restaurant! We ordered escargot (disgusting taste) and dove sole ($75 for nothing special). The waiter never poured the bottle of wine once for us. Spent $400 I would expect some Michelin Star 1 service! The most important factor is this place is so loud. People literally yelling at each other. Lived in Greenwich for over 20 years as long as the restaurant's being here, never seen something like this. And after dinner, we went to downstairs to enjoy some piano. Waiter did not know what cross contamination is which is alarming for a person with severe allergies. He allowed me to order an item which was fried in the same fryer as calamari which is a big NO for people with shellfish allergies. Amazing food with great services, the restaurant hided somewhere in the deep and feels like an Southeastern Asia venue. The seafood was so freshly and cleaned, especially the smaller raw oysters from the blue point. The red snapper fish was tender and sweet. We also ordered angry lobster by pounds. Everything was fabulous including the side dishes. The drink no matter rose, champagne or the martini, the one with coffee beans made it so special and tasted so good. Highly recommended. We went to Polpo's and had a fantastic dinner last night. Atmosphere (5/5): we sat in the bar room (we requested it) and it was great. The room was very festive with holiday lights still up and we loved the piano. The songs that were played were great and by the end of the night half the bar was singing along. Other reviews have claimed it was too loud, but we did not find that to be the case. Service (5/5): Everyone from the server to the maitre de to the manager was nice and they all stopped by to check on us. The server was attentive and made sure everything came out quickly and that our glasses were never empty. Food: We started with three appetizers to split. The chopped salad (5/5) was great - I was actually surprised at what a great job this seemingly simple dish was. The tuna tartar (3/5) was the only item that I didn't love. We also split the Burrata (4/5) which was really good. I had the Veal Tartufati (mushroom, cream sauce) (5/5) and it was one of the best pieces of veal I have had. My only complaint would be that it was a bit heavy, but I would get this again any time I went. My wife had a Chicken Martini (5/5) and she cleared her plate. I tried this and it was great. The other members of our party ordered the polpo appetizer and a fish pasta (not sure which one). I did not rate either of these because I didn't try them but our guests said they were great and they finished everything on their plate. For desert (5/5) we had the cannoli's and then a special desert that isn't one the menu where they cook up some egg yolks and whisk them over a burner while table side and then pour over strawberries in a martini glass - make sure to ask for it (sorry I can't remember the name). Overall, between the food, service, atmosphere and singing by the end of the night, made our evening at Polpo unforgettable. read more

Located on a pretty desolate street. I have been here a few times. Food and service are always great. This time we were seated upstairs. The bar area was pretty occupied. We started with some drinks. They give a nice bread basket, and eggplant carponata. Nice and tasty. We had oysters from their specials. We enjoyed a 1/2 Order of linguine white clam sauce, and we shakers the Chicken Milanese with the truffle sauce. Everything was out of this world!! read more

He took his time but not a problem. Very professional. Ordered the Octopus appetizer w white beans. That was what I needed. The flavors were perfect. It wasn't over cooked. Tender. We arrive as a party of 7 with a reservation at 5 pm for Christmas dinner. We were told the table will be ready in 30 seconds. We wait 5 minutes in the busy ground floor dining area before rudely being told by a host that we need to wait in the foyeur. (the foyeur is freezing cold because it leads to the windy 15 degree weather outside). Ok, no big deal. Wait 5 more minutes and we were shown our table. The restaurant is not so busy in our dining area (which has a separate kitchen) but gradually got busier as the night went on. Me and another person in my party decide to split an appetizer of eggplant rollatini and the dish arrives cold. I mean COLD. It's as if someone placed it in the foyeur we were told to wait in before being served to us. At this point, our waiter was paying very little attention to us and kept whizzing by serving other customers. I had to stop the gentleman and tell him the rollatini was served cold. he rudely grabbed the plates and said, 'then you obviously don't want this.' Ok.. fine. I am willing to let a lot of things go. Then we get the replacement rollatini which was obviously placed under a broiler.. with almost no eggplant in it. That's the basis of the dish. It was literally 90% cheese and sauce. I ordered the filet mignon and at this point had ZERO expectation. The meal was already ruined for me. From the time we sat down which was 5:15, we didn't get our entree's until 730. We even mentioned to the waiter that neighboring tables that arrived after us have been served their entree's. He said 'I put the order on the fire, for you.. It will come out when it comes out.' Wow. My filet mignon finally comes out. It's warm. I cut it to make sure it's medium rare. It passes all the tests. They forgot to bring my bearnaise sauce. So I wait for it to come to eat my steak. It took 15 minutes and my steak is no longer warm at this point. I throw in the towel and just ask him to wrap it up. I'll prob enjoy it in another setting where I don't have to look at these stooges anymore. Another person in my party's risotto arrived cold but he just dealt with it. We spent over $500 on this meal and it's incredibly gross how we were treated. The manager overseeing all the waiters/food was wearing a red blazer tonight. He NEVER once came over and asked us how we are enjoying the food, or even knew our order was screwed up multiple times.. or to even wish us a Merry Christmas. I went to Polpo Saturday evening at 6:00. The older blonde hostess was so rude. (2nd time she was)We were simultaneously being asked for our coats as she snipped at my friend, "well what would you like to do have a drink at the bar or table" we didn't answer her quick enough. Then when we were seated at our table we were put upstairs in the back corner. When my friend requested the main floor we were told NO, it's a Saturday evening during the holidays and that request was not made! Yeah we know it's a busy time! Snotty answer! Then the food was so blahhhhh we couldn't take it! We had 5 people waiting on us! Rushing us to order and GET out! Worst service, rude hostess, rude owner/manager. Polpo may be in Greenwich CT but they are not a 5 star restaurant!!! Or even a 4,3 or 2 star! Get your attitude on the right track! Provide tasty food! Would NEVER go back even if they were the last restaurant in the world! BTW the hats at the bar don't match the outdated red walls! Time to get an interior decorator and get out of the 1990's! Absolutely Disgusting! We went on a recommendation and so disappointing! First of all the place is way overpriced, even for Greenwich. We sat down and the waiter asked if we wanted regular or bubbly water and we said regular ( meaning tap) they hit us for $12 for a bottle of Aqua Panna. Then we ordered a glass of wine and although the cheapest glass of wine was $17, it wasn't too bad. We ordered the tagliatini bolognese and veal valdostano. Meanwhile we were expecting some bread since we had oil and bread dishes on the table, but that never came. The bolognese came out and it looked like slop, it looked gray and so unappetizing. The flavor was bland and probably the worst bolognese I have ever had! My wife had the veal and that looked really bad too. She asked if I wanted to try it and I really didn't but i said let me just try the gravy and as soon as I tasted it I knew it was horrible. It had such a strong flavor of sage that it was overwhelming. This was one of the worst meals if had in a very long time and it really bothers me when you pay $30+ for an entree and I would have been better going across the street to Wendy's! So many other really good restaurants in Greenwich to go to besides this place! read more

Worst Lobster Roll in New England At lunch yesterday I ordered Gazpacho, Fiore and a Lobster Roll. I asked that the Fiore and Lobster Roll be brought out together with my wife lunch. When my wife's lunch was served the Fiore was delivered and the waiter advised that the Lobster Roll would " be right out". After about 15 minutes out came the weakest looking Lobster Roll- a small hot dog roll with one third of the lobster filling out of the roll on a plain white plate, no French fries or salad even though the menu advertised them. If I based going to this restaurant on the reviews here I may not have gone. But my wife and I agree that the reviews that pan this restaurant are either complete lies or these people went to a different restaurant and got it confused with this one. Literally not one thing said was accurate. The food was a 10 out of 10 and the service was spot on, prompt and friendly. However, after being told on the phone a few times ( initially, when I made the reservation and again the day of the reservation) that we would be seated outside for a 7:30 reservation, we were terribly disappointed. We arrived at 7:15 for a 7:30 reservation and were told that table was not ready. We then proceeded to wait and watch while their "regulars" were seated ahead of us for a table of 4. Every time we inquired, the manager would tell us he was working on it ( as we watched people enter and be seated ! We were then told it was 1st come, first serve!!! At 7:50 we left quite annoyed. Literally the worst restaurant experience I've had in the past fifteen years. What you'll find here is a an amateurish husband and wife clown show masquerading as a high end restaurant. While they clamor for the ducats of an increasingly irrelevant and self-absorbed Greenwich trust fund clientele, there is B level entertainment on tap in the form of a pianist and vocalist that are so terrible and loud that making conversation at the bar and bar tables is nearly impossible. I won't comment on the apparently mediocre food as we left after waiting forty minutes past our reservation time and an hour and ten minutes after arriving ($170 bar tab for seven drinks) without any concern or regard from the staff. What a night. My mother scooped me up from my apartment in the city mid-quarantine and oh my god!! This place rivals most Michelin restaurants I know. You know, the kind of spot the bartender remembers your name and goes out of his way to top off your glass. They kind of spot there is a welcoming, faint sound of a pianist playing the classics. You might imagine Sinatra going there with his lady. The kind of spot you could light up a cigarette and talk politics, and the world would keep going 'round. Let's talk food. Branzino was a 10/10. I simply cannot articulate the rich, robust, simplistic flavor of roasted branzino in butter with every summer herb. So decadent and totally boneless. That's very difficult you know. Even the best places in the city have one or two baby bones. It's quite an accomplishment to master flavor and texture. Dessert we had a Napoleon. Whipped decadence, fresh pastry. So indulgent and yet simple. I couldn't imagine a more perfect ending to the meal, but then...the maitre d' inquired if we fancied any limoncello. Yes please! Compliments of the restaurant of course.
