My husband and I just had the tortilla soup here. Overall it was great - there were whole vegetables in it, plenty of sides of avo, onions, etc. it was also a very large and filling size meal. Came here last night after a recommendation from a Lyft driver. As a vegetarian, it is nice to see they have a vegetarian section on the menu. However, the options weren't too exciting. I ordered the Enchiladas Dona Clara-not the best, I could only finish one. My boyfriend ordered a combo plate with a chicken enchilada and a beef taco. Afterwards, we went to Target and my boyfriend started to not feel so great. He definitely got food poisoning from what we're guessing was the beef. Be careful! read more

Ive only been to this place two times the first time it was very good waitress was very polite and everything food was ok. Today i came in on a sunday party of 4 bring some friends in to try out their food and as i walk in the hostes sat us down quickly even if they were busy, than we are sitting down for about 30-45mins waiting for someone to at least take our drink orders, no one to be found our waitress was running behind and i had to get up to look for someone to attend us. (Bring friends for the first time and not having good service is a bad image) As i look for someone to take our order than wait another 30-40 mins to get our food. Afterwards a waitress comes saying sorry because she was running behind and she was suppose to attend us??? Ok but if this is the job you have choosen to deserve something you give good service. Time to pay no one is found to bring our check waiting another 30-40mins i get up and have to go look for someone so i could pay. I leave no tip as if i had to go chase around waitress to get service??? Ok no honey. As i am on my car about to leave waitress comes out the resturant telling me i have to leave a tip because she knows they are busy but thats "pretty fucked up" she wouldnt leave until we gave tip. Last time i come here. Never had that done too me i gave her the tip and she left when i myself didn't disrespect her. Unpoliteness and Rudeness very surprise of this. read more

They have the best black beans in Austin. I ordered a huge pot for a family event. I wish the rice was vegetarian since many of their dishes are hard to eat without the rice due to the sauce. This joint is usually very crowded but there is usually a very short wait. I love their pickled veggies in the self-serve salsa bar. They charge for chips, but you have to know where to get the salsa or you will do without. The service is neither good or bad, rude or friendly - it is just there.... The ceviche was top notch but the "Shrimp Fajita" plate was an abominable mess that tasted like musty stir fry (complete with cabbage). It did have great presentation - looked beautiful, in fact! But at a cost of $14 and nearly completely inedible, we got no sympathy from the otherwise very nice server. ugh.....the food here is so good, its sick. I can't get enough of this place. The salsa is what keeps me coming back. I don't know what they put in but the spices and flavors are just amazing! They offer a great variety of dishes and the salsa is perfect on everything there. Although they charge for salsa, its worth it because it's a flavor you will not forget. If you plan on going here for the first time, go during the week when its not busy because when friday night and the weekend come around, it is very packed and hard to get a seat. You can wait up to an hour or more before you get a seat so if you plan to do the weekend or friday, know what your in for. The reason the lines are long is because the food is so damn good. South 1st is known for all the great mexican food joints but this place stands out above the rest. I always get the grando burrito and I never get tired of it. The price is just right and you leave feeling more then satisfied. If you've never been, Go! If you are just visiting and love mexican food, GO! If your just bored at home and hungry, GO! If anything just got for a drink and chips and salsa. Their salsa is self-served so you can get as much as you want for the same price. I can't wait to go back! read more

The food? Wouldn't know, the service was the worst I've experienced in a very long time. The host was short with us and refused to explain why we couldn't sit at one of the many open tables on the patio. Even still, I told him we wait and go inside to have a drink until a table opened up. After almost an hour, I checked back in at the host stand to find my name had been crossed off the wait list, and was told "Oh... I thought you left." No apology, just indifference. I love this place. I would actually give it 5-stars except the service is terrible when you sit inside. Make sure you get outdoor seating and you will be fine. What to say about Polvos... the wait can be long, but like Hopdoddy, its part of the experience: Drinking Polvos margaritas in the parking lot and waiting to be called to your table. It has a fun South 1st Street type atmosphere, and most likely will be crowded... very crowded if the weather is good. But the food is a pretty good Tex-Mex-ish type cuisine, and their margaritas and Mexican martini's are also pretty good; although lately I've opted for a Pacifico or two. The staff is helpful enough, but usually rushed managing the crowd of fast becoming drunk patrons. Overall, its a good South Austin experience worth trying. read more

This mexican food is as good as it gets in Austin! I have been to all the frou frou places like Takoba and whatnot, but this is SO much more delicious and authentic. Granted - I always get the same dish, the Chile Relleno Al Nogal with Beef Fajita meet, but MAN! IT IS SO GOOD! Consistent food, super strong drinks, reasonable prices, crappy (but good?) ambience. Polvos is the only place in town where I can find marinated veggies (carrots, onions and jalepenos) on the salsa bar. I have a weakness for these interior Mex treats, so I go there sometimes just for them. But their homemade tortillas - the freshest in town - are a must have. Get 'em hot off the press. The Tex Mex selection is always good, but the fish dishes and the fajita salad are standout menu items for me. I live north of campus, but I often make special morning trips down south just to get the breakfast, which is among the best in ATX.
