I always love eating here when I'm visiting home! I got the Hapa Plate which comes with your choice of entree, potato Mac salad, spicy ahi, and rice. I chose to get Kalua pig as my entree it was super good. The Kalua was a little dry but that could have just been due to being on the top of the food storage container for a prolonged time. Staff is always really friendly and efficient. It's a small family-run place, so depending on what time you go, you may be contending with a long time. They're super popular and for good reason!

What an amazing place to eat! I went into just get a variety of Hawaiian food and was not disappointed. The folks at the counter were super friendly and helpful. I had their poke which was great. I also grabbed a prepackaged musubi and fried chicken and assumed it would be bad, but for it being cold and been sitting on the counter, the chicken was absolutely great. 100% recommend

Been coming to Kauai for seven years, and Pono Market just hits different from the rest. The market itself is small and the line can get long, but the service is quick, efficient, and worth the wait. The fish is unbelievably fresh, like melt-in-your-mouth fresh. Honestly tastes like butter. There are definitely other good poke spots on the island, but Pono continues to be my favorite and has never disappointed. It is a must for me at least once, twice, or even three times every trip. This market is an island favorite for all things poke, Hawaiian plates, chicken, spam masubis, lau laus, and many other traditional Hawaiian staples. Poke is prepared daily and with different dressings. Their daily selection entrees are different every day so you can build your own combo plate depending on what you're craving for. I absolutely loved their poke -- I tried three different flavors, and the mac salad was a hit for me. The hours are really limited because they sell out fast. And because they know they are a forever favorite so locals and tourists will line up to support especially during the lunch rush. Monday - Friday from 6am - 2pm Closed on the weekends.

I haven't come here in years.So I came back to pick up some lunch.Of course parking was hard to find especially around lunch time.So I had there fried chicken plate with side order wonbuk kimchee.The food was good!.The portions was just right.Customer service was good.So if you want some fresh island poke come here.They also have daily specials,Hawaiian plate,Snacks,Sandwiches n more.The only thing is good luck finding parking?.But it worth it.

The food is incredible. This was by far the best food we had during our week of exploring different options throughout the island. We tried the spicy ahi poke, the beef curry, sweet and sour ribs (name could be wrong), and the macaroni salad. It was all so delicious. The macaroni salad was the best I have had in a long time, and the curry was so good, we not only went back for more, but my husband vows to recreate it. We stumbled upon the Pono Market because we had parked right outside and decided to try it. The locals in line all agreed that everything is delicious and we couldn't go wrong with our order. There is no place to sit and it is not a fancy establishment on the inside or outside, but the food and service are excellent. We will definitely return the next time we visit Kaua'i. Highly recommend!

This place is legit and definitely worth a stop if you like poke. I wish they had better hours, so if you want to come be sure to do so before 1:00 p.m. it's worth it, I promise. You can also check their website or Instagram for their daily specials so if you're here on the island for a few days, you can pick which day you want to go. Some foods they have everyday, like their poke. We got a few varieties of poke, including their sesame tako, shoyu salmon, and shoyu ahi. Also got a couple hot things, we got a little bit of their Kahlua pork, and a pork laulau. For everything it was around $40 which was a nice hearty meal. The poke was fantastic and made for some lunch later in the day. Remember there is no seating at this restaurant so whatever you buy you have to take out and eat elsewhere.

Best spicy poke ever! The ahi was fresh and the spice had just the right amount of kick. It was a nice touch to have furikake on the rice. This is a takeout market, not a tourist destination. A must stop for authentic poke.

It was such a good deal and made fresh. Everything tasted good. We wanted to try the fried chicken but they ran out. We also wanted to try the shoyu ahi instead of what was supposed to come with the sesame ahi, but I do regret this decision because the texture of the shoyu ahi was chewy/gummy. Still we enjoyed it and would come back to try all their other food options. Great local place. There was a line but they move quickly and they are still quite nice and friendly. It is take out only FYI.

Best recommendation I got for local food in Kauai. This is a small family hole in the wall restaurant with delicious food. We were the only open for morning to 3 PM. So better get it while it's hot. I came here and was recommended to try the pork lau lau and the Poké bowl. My mouth is still salivating and craving this as I'm speaking here in the mainland. Besides that they also have cookies and other grab and items to go. Definitely recommend eating here if you really want to eat like the locals. The staff is friendly so if you have a question, just ask.

I wanna cry because I miss their poke so much! Hole in the wall place that offers fresh poke, sushi, plates and beef jerky. Go in, pick up items, order your to-go, and pay. Take your food to the closest beach and enjoy your meal with a view!

Pono Market was the last poke shop we would eat while visiting Kauai and I thought it was the best compared to the others. It might look like they have long lines but they limit the amount of people inside. And everything moves pretty fast because most of the food is already prepared. There's an option to order ahead by texting them but if you want to see the daily specials, visit in-person to see all the options! We ordered the #5 Plate which comes with a hot entree, rice, and sesame and spicy ahi poke. For the hot entree, we picked the fried chicken. On top of this, we also ordered pork lau lau and two spam musubis. Overall, a lot of food for two people but we wanted to try as much as we could. The poke was super fresh but I think the marinades could have had some more flavor. The portion size also isn't that big for the price. The fried chicken was solid though. The pork lau lau was delicious and I loved the little chunks of pork fat. For the musubis, we got Teri Chicken and Fried Chicken. Solid size for the price and very easy snack to take for the road. We ended up eating everything in or car with the A/C on but if you're okay with the heat, there's an outdoor dining area with food trucks nearby, or just walk over to the beach!

We tried the spam musubi, teri musubi, fried chicken musubi and the poke. The poke was just okay. It says on their sign it's treated with carbon monoxide as a preservative. I don't know if that's it, but it just wasn't my favorite. Texture and flavor weren't the best. It was kinda salty, not super flavorful, texture wasn't the best and it was on the pricey side. I wouldn't get it again. Musubi's were good and affordable, I would try the chicken next time. It seemed like a lot of locals got the chicken and the musubi. Maybe we didn't get the right stuff.

Yeah man, Pono's is my type of place. Eff the ambiance, the fancy-schmancy service, the sophisticated menu. Your'e not gonna find that type of stuff on Kauai. And if you do (lucky you...not) it will be filled with so many stuffy white folk, you'll think you got transported back to the mainland! That's not why you're here!!! So give it up, and head to Pono if you know what's good for ya. Their bento boxes run out suuuuppppeeerrrrrr quick, so if you arrive a little to late, make sure to get some spicy ahi poke, sesame ahi poke and mac salad. Yuuuuumm. read more

Pono Market was my favorite food place when I was in Kauai. I went three times - the first time I made a rookie mistake and showed up at around 4:00pm - it was already closed! I soon learned that you need to go early in the morning, since they do run out of food because they are so busy. They next day - it was one of my first stops before heading to the North Shore. Since it wasn't busy the lady helping us gave us samples of their most popular poke, so we could make our choices. l grabbed a sesame poke bowl, a spicy poke, spam masubi and assorted mochis. When we were being rung up the cashier was so friendly and let us know that we could take some star fruits on the counter for free! Definitely a plus, since I love starfruit!! Also the pricing is very reasonable - I beleive the poke bowls (rice with poke) were around $6.00-$7.00. There is no where in California where I can get a poke bowl under $10! We ended up setting up a nice picnic on the beach - definitely Hawaiian picnic perfection! My aunt got the tako poke (octopus) and really enjoyed that. My favorite was the spicy poke - SO ONO! The food was such a highlight that I came back the next day and got the exact same thing: sesame poke, spicy poke and spam masubi. This time when I went it was super packed with locals getting their breakfast and lunch. Highly recommend going here when you're in Kauai. Mahalo Pono Market! read more

Very awesome plates - got two number 6 - two items and a poke each, span musubi and really liked the chicken. This is the only place so far that the Kailua pork is not salty - and still flavorful. The chicken lau lau was good too. The musubi was good too and it was cheap 2 for less than $4. But I think I liked the fish express musubi more. Next time I will get more chicken and eat at the bench by the food trucks where the wild chickens roam and begging for food. Yes, I know not to feed them, and I think it's cruel if Anyone would even feed the chickens chicken. read more

More Poke than Baskin Robbins has Ice Cream. Well not quite but close. I love Poke but on this trip I made it a mission to try as many different kinds as I could and Pono was right there at the top of the class. There are at least a half dozen kinds and all are good. The Spicey Korean Squid was pungent and tasty. They also have sandwiches, salads and hot dishes. I really like the feel of the place too. I grew up in San Francisco, and lived in Chinatown in Seattle for a long time and this place has that same feel. It's a comfortable, not fancy storefront with a really friendly staff. The guy behind the counter seemed absolutely delighted that we were ordering all this poke. "You gonna be real healthy after you eat all this." He told us with a smile. I'm not sure about that, but my stomache was plenty happy read more

Pono market always serves delicious food! My favorite thing to get here is the fried chicken. They always pack it in the container so that it's overfilling the brim and you need to force the lid on. The pricing id very reasonable as for everything else. I also really like their spam musubis.. They just do it better. The pokes are also very well flavored and fresh. My friends like getting kimchi shrimp poke so try that out if you like shrimp! Very good location for ono food!! read more

First meal in kauai, and found this local joint by where I stay at. Lots of customers are lining up for the Traditional lunch box. Good combo choices from hot entrees to poke. I suggest that to come early, their hot entrees may sold out. I had the Hawaiian combo which comes with 1 hot entrees, 1 side and 1 poke. Prices are Hawaiian standard, $12-14 without specialty items. Poke tastes fresh and hot entrees are great. Portions are normal, I would like to have a bit more poke tho. Anyway, good place to visit if you want to taste a piece of Hawaiian tradition. read more

I got a spicy poke bowl with white rice and lomi, it was amazing! The fish was so fresh and tasty and the sticky white rice was cooked perfectly. My wife got the fried chicken which had a sweet and spicy flavor it also was amazing. You will be happy you stopped in here for lunch! read more

This place is where the locals go and I can see why. Great spam masubi! Make sure you grab them in front before you get in line because they run out. I had shoyu poke & the Teri meat loaf. Very yummy and reasonably priced. Only bad thing is no where really to eat only two tables outside. So this is more a take out place. read more

My wife did a lot of research before our honeymoon here in Hawaii and she found out about this place which led to us having very high expectations and we were not disappointed! The poke was as fresh as any I've had and didn't need to be dressed-up as much with other garnishes like so many poke places do on the mainland. The kulolo was a complete surprise too - it doesn't look the most appetizing but don't let that fool you. It's a great little dessert, try it. read more

Pono market is a solid choice for all things poke near the Kapaa area and makes for the perfect pitstop on the way to and from the airport. it's ideal to stop in early in the morning for ready made items. Grab and go and head to the beach! They've got it all- from a large poke menu to spam musubi, and hot entree plates lomi lomi, lau lau pork, with rice and macaroni salad. EVERYTHING. Definition of lunch plate here at Pono Market. I ordered the kahlua pork (it was a bit salty, but I guess that's how Hawaiians like their food aka spam, saimin), which was super tender, not at all dry, poke, super fresh as it should be, and a spam musubi. Yum. All very delicious and filling. Going any later than 2pm, there might not be much food left so be sure to go for an early lunch! read more

Stopped here for a late lunch. We were so late that they ran out of Kalua pork and cabbage. :( We ordered the fried chicken lunch instead, a generous portion of tender boneless chicken, rice and either mac salad, lomi lomi or kim chee. Lomi lomi was ok. The mac salad was heavy on the mayo. I'd get the chicken again, but split it with a friend, b/c it was a lot of chicken. Friendly and helpful service. Cash only. read more

I always order the Lau Lau (pork and fish surrounded by taro leaf w/ spinach-like richness) in advance and call to see what hot entrees are being served even before I land in Lihue. By 12:30 they were pretty wiped-out. But my favorites were there: Lau Lau, Kalua Pork & Cabbage, Lunchmeat w/Pineapple, Fried Chicken, (PORK ADOBO MONDAY). Other cool island staples: mac potato salad, seaweed salad, manju, poi, KILLER FLOWERS, boiled peanuts, imitation crab sushi rolls, + ++POKE: tako, scallop, seafood mix, spicy -- so fresh. Family run - Japanese/Hawaiian love and tradition in all of their dishes. The BEST customer care -- the best staff. Always meet cool people every time I visit. read more

Stop by in here for your spam musubi and fried chicken musubi. Both $1.99. Lobster poke is worth the money. Great taste for the cost.

Very unexpectedly small and unassuming, by any standard (island or mainland!) Very friendly staff, and a large variety of poke is available. Loved the scallop poke, ahi onion and ahi sesame poke, tako (octopus) poke, and spicy edamame. They do musubi several ways: Spam, Gotteberg ( a type of sausage/salami - not spicy), Teriyaki Beef, and these are available only in the morning - a breakfast dish. Their lunch plates are very generously portioned, available with Lomi Lomi or very good Macaroni/Potato salad, and the fried chicken was also delicious and tender, not greasy at all nor chewy. Everything is available by the pound too, if you want more. They also take orders ahead of time, so you can have you Musubi at other times of the day. Student discounts for kids with ID before 730 am. read more

I came in because I heard you can get married here and I thought that was a crazy urban legend. It's true. 3 star restaurant, very basic, limited seating, they have poke bowls and some fried items, also a little coffee and ice cream on the opposite side. I gave it four stars for convenience, but don't expect anything more than mediocre out of the food (I was also being lenient because I LOVE poke bowls. Furikake topping is a cheap way out of just making better poke, though.) read more

Went back for another glorious 2 week vacation at Pono Kai, so obviously my first stop was Pono Market. Very nice to see the same friendly faces I got to know 2 years ago. This got an extra star because they serve imitation poke! We ordered regular ahi, regular salmon, and kimchee ahi poke. It was fresh and oh so good! I got the spicey imitation crab poke and it was delicious. Definitely going to be back! read more

This place is a must if your on Kauai! Locally owned and ran, best food on the island hands down! The musubi here is unlike any on island, traditional and delicious. The staffs customer service was amazing! Great recommendations and very helpful. Young woman upfront was a life saver with her suggestions. Only regret is we didn't here about this place sooner. read more

This was our go to breakfast/lunch spot before we headed out to explore the island. Located in a little market with cafeteria style orders. Over the course of a week, we went 3 or 4 times. And I'm not one who doesn't like to explore new spots! Loved the poke! Loved the pork! And loved the mac salad! Do yourself a favor, order a mixed plate, a little poke, and a little pork. Then sit down and get comfortable. Your mouth and stomach will thank you. read more

If your looking for a plate lunch this pretty ok stop. The fried chicken is delicious!!! Laulaus are dry and over cooked. Teri meatloaf is alright. Previously frozen fish used for the poke which is a disappointment. Staff isnt very nice at all. They treat you like they are mad at you for coming in! Pretty odd. Over all food is good. read more

We picked up four box lunches. The beef curry and wrapped chicken was really good. Our friends enjoyed the ribs and pork. The salmon tomato salad was so so but rice and other sides were great. Pre order is the best way to get a meal, so much faster and You can bypass the long line you see on the street. They take the mask mandate seriously so be prepared. I don't like that they charge for sauce, that seems unnecessary read more

I would give this 5 stars but the hours of operation is a little frustrating to work around with all the early starts for hiking and late returns. But other than that, on our 4th try we got to eat the poke and spam musubi and it did not disappoint. I would say go to this place on your test day when you have the middle of the day open. read more

I would echo the comments about the questionable customer service. My story: Around 1pm, I was looking for a lunch spot. I saw online that Pono Market was open, but set to close at 2pm. Since I was about 15-20 min away and didn't want drive all the way and be disappointed, I called just to confirm the hours. I was assured they were open until 2pm -- "Great, see you soon!" I responded. When I got there around 1:15pm (45 min to closing), I was brusquely told there was a limited menu and the only items available were a few packaged foods in the deli display case. These were mostly macaroni salad and some sides. I saw one container of poke left, so I asked: "Could I get a poke bowl made with that?" They said: "No, you'd have to order a separate side of rice." I wasn't sure how that would work or how much it would cost, so I left without getting anything. It would have been helpful to know when I called that there wouldn't be much food left. Pretty disappointing, since I drove pretty far, it looked like nice place, and I was really looking forward to it. read more

I have lived on Kauai for 20 years and never tried Pono Market. My brother was visiting and saw great reviews and wanted to try it. The server would not let me get half portion of rice with my poke bowl. My brother ordered the onion ahi poke bowl and the fish was BAD, smelled fishy and was clearly old. We went back to replace the onion ahi poke with sesame and they graciously did this. I got sesame ahi poke. It was all just plain and blah. I would not go back there. read more

Oh I LOVE THIS PLACE! We went to Java Kai for breakfast and here for lunch like every day! All of their fish is super fresh and the chicken is crazy good. sesame ahi poke- not my favorite, but if you don't like spicy stuff, then this should be your go to spicy ahi poke- I would eat this literally every day if I lived there... Well I did while I was there. It is spicy, but not overly fishy, amazing (get the flakes on top) chicken- they do something special to this chicken. It seems like it has been marinated in something with ginger and then fried, but I have never had anything like it---AMAZING ocean salad- basic seaweed salad, but still one of my favorites GO HERE RIGHT NOW! read more

There was a flat screen with status of orders placed, and my name was on it with a status of 'complete'. There were pizza warming ovens accessible so first thought I was supposed to self-pick it up (like a delivery driver). But it was empty, so waited until I could get a teenagers attention. He got the pizza box from a warming oven, handed it over without much effort and we drove back 10 minutes to our hotel. The pizza was good, especially with the bottled Corona we had back in the room. The toppings of cupped pepperoni, Italian sausage, and canned pineapple was surprisingly generous with a decent amount of cheese, all covered right to the end of the crust. It was cut into squares, and I think it would tasted really good if eaten right out of the oven...so dining in might be the way to go here.

Growing up on the island of kauai this was my usual every day lunch spot in high school. Leaving school during that period going here telling the staff whats up unko/aunty hows its going leme get some of this and that today. Ah the memories. And now when i do fly home its always good to walk in and see the same faces and the same food. Def a blast from the past and great memories as like everyone there is family. Great customer lotalty there as the customers have been going there for years and generations even. My grandfather and my dad both go there till this day as they have been since the market was originally opened. Pono Market is the perfect place to grab lunch before heading over to Kapa'a Beach Park! There's plenty of parking nearby, as it's located in a popular part of town. My friends and I stopped by around noon, and as explained in other reviews, some of the options were already sold out. It was no problem, though, because there were still plenty of great choices available. I ended up going with a classic ahi tuna bowl, which came with white rice. For the price, the tuna was of decent quality, but I was underwhelmed by the rice, which tasted a bit stale. I wish the bowl came with some vegetables or toppings, but overall, it was still a solid choice. My friend also got mochi, which was absolutely delicious and had the perfect chewy consistency. I can't believe I hadn't written a review on Pono Market YEARS ago! This place is truly one of the best, friendliest places on Kaua'i. And, the poke and hawaiian plate lunches are all crazynutzONO! Yes, that is a word I made up to describe Pono Market, because there just isn't one.....until now. My wife and I are always super stoked to go in there, as we are always treated like Ohana by Robbie and the crew. When we leave with our Spicy Ahi Poke Rice Bowls, Lau Lau, Kalua Pig and Cabbage, Poi, and Apple Manju (yes....we eat ALL'a dat!), we are beyond stoked! They recommended we try this local market and we managed to get there in time to get some (they do sell out quickly). So glad I did! We also had Kalua pork and cabbage. Arrived on kauai saturday, came directly here for their poke. It is delicious! Ordered the fried chicken bowl, spicy ahi poke, and luckily for me, they just rolled out a new type of poke... Sea scallop poke! Amazing. It is so good. All of it!! I love scallops. Also ordered their mix manju pack and some spam musibis. So gooood. read more

Best Poke on Kauai! Got the fried chicken plate with mac salad and spicy ahi. WOW! The poke was so fresh it melted in my mouth. the fried chicken had some good crunch on it and a little spice (ginger?), delicious. For about 10 dollars you can't go wrong with a plate lunch from here. read more

Where the locals go! Very nice service (love you Noah!) and scrumptious grinds! I you want a taste of Kaua'i, grab a plate from here. No sit down (limited outside), but theres a freakin' BEACH right behind the store, so go for a 1 min walk and enjoy the ocean with your super tasty meal! read more

Perfect spot for hawaiian food - must try the pork/chicken lau lau (meat wrapped inside taro leaves.) They also have tables located outside the market for you to enjoy your food! read more
