AUTHENTIC Greek food at reasonable prices and hearty portions! Our highlights were the avgolemeno soup, the grape leaves, taramosolata, the meat platter - basically everything. Service was impeccable. Our waitress offered to explain anything we had a question about. No charge for refills on soda! (This is a BIG deal for me!) The only things "missing" were items such as spanikopita, moussaka, and the like. The menu leans toward more "grilled" items (all of which were fantastic.) I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have spanikopita in the back and it's just not on the menu. The chicken souvlaki was the best I've ever had. The seasoned meat patty looks like a plain hamburger and tastes about the same - it wasn't a highlight. Everything is LOADED with flavor without being salty, which I love. Homemade rice pudding and baklava were out of this world. Probably the best we've had. Worth coming back just for those! Decor is simple but refreshingly so. It is not loud inside. Absolutely amazing. The platters (souvlaki, gyro) are huge...filled to the brim with meat, pita, tzatziki, orzo, tomato salad. The prices are all right, from the food to the wine. The menu is online so check it out for yourself. The service is also extremely friendly, patient, and inviting. This was our first time there and after the waitress found this out, she walked us through the whole menu in terms of plate sizes, most popular dishes, etc. Despite the traditional, authentic cuisine, the restaurant itself is not a "hole in the wall" as one might expect it to be. Clean, comfortable, well decorated, windows on the whole front wall opening it up. Nice enough to go to for a date night, for sure. Make this a must-see!! read more

Great food. We frequent here before a movie next door at the Garden Cinema. Our favorites are the beet garlic salad and the Greek Salad. They will often run out of specials and menu items (fish). Greek wine tastes like tobacco (to me), stick with the Greek beer. Another heads up: garlic mashed potatoes is served cold, go figure. read more

My new favorite restaurant Pontos Taverna just topped my list for the best restaurant serving chicken souvlaki--the tzaziki was the best around!!! The feta cheese in the Xoriatiki (country garden salad) was delicious as was the Saganaki and rice pudding. Friendly service, generous portions and reasonable pricing will keep me coming back for more. I am looking forward to returning again soon. read more

Yummmmm!!!! The food here is amazing. Everything here was fresh, tasted great and the portions were a good size. I have been looking for a good Greek place in Norwalk and didn't find a good one here, I found a GREAT one. They cook everything to order, make all of their dips, sauces, dressings, soups etc. Worth a drive if you want a great family run place that takes pride in their food, and the prices are well worth it. I really don't see what the big hoopla is about. I find the menu to be limited and boring. Greek food can be so much better than this. Fried calamari or fried shrimp for "market price!" Really? That's just amusing. So we went with the grilled octopus. $23.95 for an "appetizer portion" to quote our (lovely) waitress.. It was one.. ONE gummy octopus leg. I swear it came from a bag of frozen seafood. The pieces were all uniform in size, shape, thickness, and anyone who has seen an octopus leg knows there are tentacles on it, or whatever the little suction cup things are, this didn't have them. The gyros did look good but I didn't try it so can't comment. I had the dips sampler (not on menu but you can ask for it) and it was like eating chunks of garlic. After a few minutes the flavors were almost indistinguishable. Just garlic. We shared the horiatiki salad (very good) and my husband had the yogurt barley soup which was also very good. I just felt like the entree selection was either fried food or just grilled or sautéed chunks of meat. Short order kitchen. No lemon potatoes. No pastisios. No moussaka. No garides me feta or other shrimp entree. The fresh fish specials are a filet on a plate with nothing but a lemon wedge, and theyre expensive. Ugh maybe I will give them another try and order different things but I was not impressed with any of the entrees at the table or the dips. I miss Ambrosia. read more

Saw an ad for this place, checked Yelp for reviews, and Bingo! Had a great meal and would definitely recommend and return. Service was prompt, friendly and helpful. Enjoyed apps of garlicky beet salad, and flaming saganaki cheese, followed by chicken and gyro platters. The chicken was excellent -- moist and flavorful and we loved the accompanying tzaziki, tomato salad, and orzo. My husband got the gyro -- small pieces of meat -- but not ground like we've had it elsewhere -- he loved it, but it was a little fatty to my taste. Although we were totally full, we ordered a piece of their baklava anyway. Their homemade version was delicious -- lots of ground nuts, and not overly sweet -- unlike most places. Very popular and noisy. Food very reasonable, wine a bit pricy. We'll be back. read more

Pontos is a great place particularly after a movie at the Garden Cinemas. The food is delicious and the portions are a healthy size. Visited this restaurant last night because we were in the mood for something different. I did not like the fact that so many items are market price, e.g. fish, lamb chops. Since prices are not posted, it is necessary to quiz the server. We started with the Spicy Mashed Feta, which was creamy and very flavorful. Unfortunately pita is a la carte. We also had the Grilled Octopus, which was priced at $24.95. The dish came in a long, very narrow plate and included about 7 or 8 small pieces marinated in garlic, olive oil, and spices. The fish was tender and flavorful but certainly not worth the cost. The gyro platter is very flavorful and comes with sides of tomatoes, rice, and pita. This was the best dish and well priced. Pork souvlaki platter was a disappointment-a small but flavorful portion of pork- with same sides as the gyro plate. Service is friendly but haphazard. Wait for a second glass of wine and the bill was longer than it should be. Note there is a large pay by phone parking lot across the street with signage indicating that payment is required 24/7. The restaurant's hostess told us this Is not enforced. Not sure I will return--did not feel like restaurant was a good value even though some items were tasty. read more

Milos, Avra, the places in greenwich or stamford people say is the best - THEY all pale in comparison to the quality of flavor, ingredients and authentic recipes of Pontos. We ate like Zeus in this place, ordered nearly everything and the bill was beyond reasonable. The octopus is the most tender ever consumed by the table, could borderline spread it on a piece of pita for heavens sake. The only down side is no liquor, but not needed as the wine and beer selection is great and reasonable. NO reservations is a win too, especially on weekends when you want to live free. read more

Being Greek I was a bit hesitant to try this place. I've been to many places and the food is not authentic. Pontos has been my favorite place so far! The food is very fresh, made to order and the menu is not your average diner menu. Perfect size menu with a variety of choices. The beeftekia, calamari, Greek salad, gyros and fish are all exceptional. We often order take out during the week which is always delightful. This place has become one of my favorite spots. Pontos is simply fabulous food. their country salad has made me a feta lover (only this feta, which is from a European co and amazing) and their soulvaki and tzatziki are superb. They clearly source their veggies with care because they are very high quality. We really liked Pontos Taverna. The service was friendly (although it could have been speedier, but not a big deal). I had the chicken lemon soup, a tzatziki appetizer, and the chicken souvlaki platter. All were excellent. The orzo that came with the platter had a great flavor from the dill they added. The tzatziki was creamy and had a delicious amount of garlic. The lemon chicken soup had the perfect amount of lemon and nice pieces of shredded chicken. I used to really like this place but the last couple times I came here the gyro was overcooked and the portions seemed to be smaller. I have had better Greek at multiple locations in NJ. Since I don't know of any other Greek places in the Norwalk area, I will continue to come here when I have a Greek craving. read more

I visited pontos the other day, my first impression was a simple, casual, Greek restaurant. The food was reasonably priced, everything tasted fresh. The calamari was very tasty, it was lightly battered and tender. Our gyros were delicious, again the portion sizes were good for the price. Can wait to go back and try more of the menu. Very pleasant surprise, the food was wonderful. Nothing fancy just a great meal in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Highly recommend the cucumber tomato salad as well as any of the desserts. Pontos Taverna is my absolute favorite restaurant in the area. Even on their busiest of nights the wait to be seated never takes long. The food is amazing! Fresh and healthy options. The only problem is that I have trouble venturing out of my comfort zone as I favorite the same meal time and time again. The country salad is a must with every meal and my go to entree is the chicken souvlaki platter. If you have room don't forget to try their rice pudding for dessert. We arrived late on a Saturday, almost 9:45 and were surprised to see the constant stream of people coming to this restaurant after our arrival. After eating here, we understood why. We really enjoyed the food here, which reminded us of the great food we ate on our trip to Greece. The food was flavorful and reasonably priced. The service was attentive and friendly. Amazing. Phenomenal. This place was a total gem that I stumbled upon. We got the sampler platter for two as well as the grilled octopus. Octopus was so so good, marinated in olive oil, scallions, and other spices. Texture was so juicy, I truly was impressed. Platter arrived, and I was a little disappointed when the waitress told us there was no more gyro so she supplemented the dish with extra lamb chops. That was nice but I was still sad. Well sad no longer I was because that lamb chop was probably the best, juiciest, flavorful I had ever had! And I've made lamb chops at home before so I totally appreciate the quality. Oh, so I'm not done...halfway through the meal the same waitress came by with a plate and said that they were able to scrape some gyro pieces for us and added yet another chop. Honestly that was one of the kindest gestures anyone has done for us! It wasn't necessary either but they went above and beyond. So we were able to enjoy their gyro after all. Superb customer service (we had 3 different waitresses checking in on us) that I know I have to come back (even though we live 40 miles away!) because this place is truly a gem. The food was so flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the service was the icing on the cake. My only negative was that they were already out of the rice pudding 2 hours before closing time, so my boyfriend missed out, however I didn't because I got my baklava :) so good! I will be back and look forward to seeing the same wonderful people that helped make this such an amazing meal. read more

Very yummy. Passed my fried calamari benchmark test- fresh squid (ordered the fried hot peppers to complete the New England style experience). Fresh ingredients, simple meals. Staff was kid friendly but would add a short kid selection though; as I have adventurous eaters, if the flavors aren't an instant hit a simple fresh kids dinner or two as a safety net would be great. read more

We went to Pontos Taverna for the first time last night and enjoyed it very much. We started out with the Eggplant garlic spread and pita bread which was delicious. For our entrees we got Pork Soulvaki platter. The pork was deliciously seasoned and moist. My husband ordered the scrod and that was great too. Hands down the best, fresh Greek food in Connecticut! The Grilled Octopus was grilled to perfection, not one piece chewy or over cooked. The Gyro Platter served with taziki, orzo, chopped tomato & pita was so juicy and tasty that it was tough to stop eating it even after being full! The Taziki is perfect. And my child's Gyro sandwich so so tasty. For dessert we had tiramisu, rice pudding and took home a slice of Baklava. The tiramisu is amazing, rice pudding the best we have ever had and the Baklava for breakfast tasted fresh and just the right amount of nutty and sweet. None of the desserts were too sweet in fact, the flavors distinct and can tell they use only the freshest ingredients. Pricing is very fair for the highest quality food they serve. This has to be the best Greek restaurant outside of Greece. We were in Norwalk for a Greek event at the Taverna and went back the next day for lunch. The horiatiki salad brought me back to those sunny days of summer in Greece when a horiatiki was "de rigueur" for every meal. The beet salad had just the right amount of vinegar. The souvlaki and the octopus were both tender and tasty and cooked to perfection. The owners aim to please and spend time with every dish and every customer. Highly recommended! read more
