Popover's is a super nice little restaurant in town Simsbury that serves a terrific breakfast. My favorite is the Simsbury feast. The feast comes with two eggs done anyway you like them, two slices of bacon, two turkey, sausage, patties, fried potatoes, and your choice of toast. The sour dough bread is top notch, full of genuine sour dough flavor. The fried potatoes have a bit of crunch on the outside while soft in the middle. Just went to Pop Over Eatery for breakfast after a walk along a trail nearby and absolutely loved it. Ambiance is somewhat old school diner. The server was friendly and helpful with our choices. My buddy and I both ordered the corn beef plate with sourdough toast. The corn beef was tender, juicy and flavorful. This was real corn beef, NOT out of a can! I love this place for its great variety of breakfast options and fun coffee choices. I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, and finding good baked goods can be challenging--so I was very happy to see gluten-free bread options and even waffles on the menu. Known for their pop overs, there is a selection of breakfast-y options, pop over sandwiches, salad bowls, waffles/pancakes, etc. The food quality is fine but I must admit that I haven't really been wowed. We recently had the vegan breakfast sandwich (ok but the sourdough was a bit hard at the edges and there wasn't enough avocado; not really melt in your mouth), tuna melt (also ok), and a sweet potato, kale, veggie salad bowl. The pop overs are good but often feel too airy. Each individual pop over is $4 a "pop." The menu also has some seasonal items. The cost adds up here for the food and I cringe when I see that total! Typically when we've ordered out, the order takes longer than the estimated time and the folks at the front are slow as they're busy helping in-house customers. Pop Over Eatery is a breakfast/lunch spot and they have two locations, one in Mystic and one in Simsbury. I've read reviews for this place and was excited to try it out. It's located in the Simsburytown Shops; it's a busy parking lot with limited parking, but we were able to snag a spot. The place was busy at lunch on a Monday. We spoke to the hostess and she said about a 10-15 minute wait, which was correct and fine with us. They had high chairs which was a plus. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. I enjoyed the bright and colorful decor. I started off with a butter latte which you guessed it, had butter in it; it was delicious, I ordered it hot since the waitress said it might not fully melt if it's iced, I appreciated the tip. Their menu was vast and had so many good and unique options to choose from. I decided to try out their French toast BLT; it had an egg, applewood bacon, lettuce, tomato, maple mayo, and cinnamon brioche French toast. This came with a side of syrup but I didn't need it. The sandwich was unique and pretty good; I just wished it came with a side like fries or hash browns. There were a few other menu items I wanted to try out as well. I really love Pop Over Eatery. I love that they have so many amazing Gluten Free bakery items. The atmosphere is super cute to eat in. It's not so loud that you can't hear your companions. Sunday morning around 9:30, we drove by and my wife convinced me to get some grub. She's been here a couple times but it was a first for me. Stuffed popovers for breakfast is a concept I agreed to try. Staff were very friendly and they all seemed excited and happy about their jobs. We waited about 20 minutes which was fine. Service was prompt and friendly. My wife got a basic and huge popover with jam and flavored butter. I got the stuffed popover with scrambled eggs, real corned beef and potatoes. It was an Irish something dish. We also got crunchy fried potatoes as a side which actually was totally unnecessary but delicious. I only said unnecessary because we couldn't finish them and brought them home. My popover was literally stuffed and was an absolute beast of a meal. It was good, and I admit I couldn't finish it. There's a ton of other things on the menu which would motivate me to come back. They offer some breakfast sandwiches and meals without any popovers. Watching food items getting delivered around our table was interesting. They don't take reservations but you get on the list and can wait in the entrance area which can get a little packed along with people who get take out too. They text you when your table is ready so many people sat in their cars (I assume). Some also stayed outside which brings me to my ONLY and petty constructive criticism of this restaurant. We were there on a fairly enjoyable but yet cooler morning. The door swings open and closed copious amounts due to people picking up takeout orders, people wanting to sit inside, people who get their names on the list and then go sit in their cars, therefore there's always a cool breeze and soon to be a cold breeze within the restaurant when winter arrives. We sat towards the back of the restaurant near the kitchen and our food got cool quicker than we anticipated. So this winter, eat fast and bundle up because that door is always swinging open. It's not the end of the world for us, we will go back, and maybe during the winter they might turn some heat on but stop over for some awesome popovers. You won't regret it. read more

This was my first time dining in even though I have had their food through catering. I didn't realize they served brunch all day so I'd definitely make the trip again since brunches are my favorite. We went at 9a on a Sunday and I called ahead to find out if there was any wait, which was none. It was steady through out our dining experience. The staff are really nice and I love the colors they have going on inside and outside. I learned the small little patio outside the front door, although more intimate is only for take out guests. There is outdoor seating with patio umbrellas on the side. The food is really good. That Skillet Shakshuka was worth it! I wish I had more bread though, that got gobbled up. The only thing to note was that my friend's classic Benny was brought out incomplete without the bearnaise sauce. She didn't actually notice it was lacking until it was brought over. At least that was rectified. I didn't partake in any lattes or coffee, though I was told it's really good. I suppose I will have to add that on my next visit! read more

How is it that I haven't reviewed this place yet?? This is my absolute favorite breakfast spot and probably the only place I'm willing to wait over 30min to be seated coz it's worth it. If (like me) you don't know what popovers are, it's a light roll made from an egg batter similar to a Yorkshire pudding, typically baked in dedicated popover pans. Don't be alarmed by the huge size it's almost all air or hollow inside and eggy on the walls. Drizzle that with warm clarified butter and maple syrup... voilà!! Yum!! There are so many variations of what you can top a popover with on the menu. I've had the veggie and Nutella versions of it.. both really good!! I love how innovative and creative they are with the food plus the menu offers a large variety of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. read more

Gluten-free people: this is not the restaurant for us. It presents as gluten free friendly, however today--after reiterating multiple times that I have Celiac Disease and need allergy level care taken with everything I order--I was served a sandwich on regular bread. By regular bread I mean bread with gluten. After taking a bite I got suspicious and called the server over to quadruple check that the bread was gluten free. Lo and behold it was in fact NOT GLUTEN FREE. Everyone was "very sorry," though. "Sorry," makes it okay, right? The thing every person with Celiac Disease knows is that there's no amount of "sorry" that will prevent us from being extremely ill for multiple days to come. It doesn't matter how "sorry" the folks at the Popover Bistro feel. Our meal obviously ruined, we left. Later I called and asked to speak to the owner Sarah, because I wanted to try and communicate the ramifications for a person with Celiac Disease. Sarah became defensive and told me it was an honest mistake. While this is no doubt true there is no room for mistakes, honest or otherwise, when promoting yourself as gluten-free friendly establishment. Sarah told me how careful they are. This is exactly the wrong thing to say to the person who is the recipient of LACK of care taken in her establishment. This should not happen. Ever. Full stop. There is no amount of apologizing that makes it okay to serve gluten to people who have Celiac Disease; not when we have done our due diligence, and communicated that medical dietary restriction clearly multiple times when ordering. SORRY DOESN'T CUT IT. Train your servers better. Or get a manager to take the order like plenty of restaurants do when there's a food allergy or serious dietary restriction. FIGURE IT OUT, but don't give me a pathetic "we feel so bad." "Sorry," is just inadequate. Nobody at Popover Bistro feels worse than people with Celiac Disease who get to experience the special dread of knowing that we've been fed a poisonous ticking time bomb, and that we can expect to be up all night with horrifically painful cramps. Nobody is sorrier than I am, knowing I'm going to have to tell my kid that I'm sorry I'm too sick to attend her swim meet tomorrow. Popover Bistro's apology will bring me SUCH COMFORT during this upcoming week of gut-wrenching pain and plans that require rescheduling because I'm too sick to get out of bed. Believe me, Sarah isn't nearly as sorry as I am. How about doing ANYTHING other than NOTHING? How about taking action to keep your customers safe before responding to reviews? How about less justification and more gluten-poisoning prevention? How about telling me what you're going to do to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else? How about you tell me that your servers will be getting more training about celiac disease and gluten intolerance? How about telling me that when a person with a medical condition or food allergy comes in that their order will be taken by the owner/manager/chef or SOMEONE who has some understanding of the stakes for your vulnerable customers? How about telling me that the tickets for people with dietary restrictions will be flagged? How about you tell me that a manager/owner/chef will take responsibility and personally deliver to the table the orders of people with dietary restrictions? How about telling me how you plan to do better? How about sharing how you plan not to harm anyone else again going forward? Can't say enough good things about the Simsbury Pop Over location. EZ Cater would not accept my large order to this establishment online. Spoke with the Manager at the store who was super sweet!. Unfortunately forgot her name. She was more than accommodating. Went and picked up my $250 or so Catering order. Spoke with the Manager in person. Really friendly and she saved the day. Place was clean. Food looked solid so I added an order in for myself... very good. Food was a hit at the surgeon lunch. One of the nurses text me after and asked where I got the Choc Chip cookies; said they were incredible. I told her. She was pumped to go here. Don't worry about the extra carbs, it will be worth it. I was in Simsbury for fa wedding and after being picked up at the airport, my BFF and mother of the bride took me to Popover for lunch. The weather was super nice, so we ate out on the patio. It was a July wedding, I'm just behind on vacation reviews. We had a light lunch, I enjoyed one of their multiple Avocado Toast selections and the brides mother had a salad. We joked with each other that she had a mother of the bride dress to fit in. Our beverage of choice was the famous lemonade that they serve. Day of the wedding I had lots of free time to myself. Since Popover was a short walk from my hotel, I took the stroll and enjoyed an amazing breakfast. I may have been in the Northeast, but I had to order the, Southerner. I am a big fan of, Chicken and Waffles and that is exactly what the Southerner was. They serve up a huge waffle with crispy chicken tenders on top. My waffle had a lightly crisp outside with a fluffy inside and the tenders coating was super crisp and the breast meat inside was tender and juicy. My morning beverage was a Honey Lavender Latte. I'm a sucker for honey, so it was a perfect choice. Both times the staff was super friendly and professional. I give Popover, two thumbs up. read more

The Pop Over Eatery in Simsbury is so eye catchingly beautiful with its painted pumpkins all over the front door! I stepped inside and was immediately greeted by not one, but two of their staff members. I tried to select something of the menu posted on the wall, there was a lot of good stuff. The friendly young man brought me to a seat and gave me a print out of the menus. They have so many seasonal coffee drinks, as well as cocktails. I got the pumpkin spice cold brew. There are so, so many tasty breakfast and lunch options available! The waffles are endless and the French toast, yum! I went with the Funky Monkey Bowl. This is Greek yogurt with bananas, granola and peanut butter. I'm trying to watch my carb intake, this is why I went with this bowl. It came beautifully presented in a bowl, with swirls of peanut butter across. My coffee also arrived beautifully presented, in a mason jar mug, with cold pumpkin foam on top. I was seated next to the beautiful, colorful mural. They also have plenty of outdoor seating. This was such a tasty breakfast! The bananas are so fresh, and combined with the granola and the peanut butter... so good! There was plenty of Greek yogurt! This was a filling and nutritious breakfast. My pumpkin spice cold brew was also so tasty! I could taste the cinnamon and the pumpkin flavor. This was perfect for a warm fall, late morning. I just came back from what will be my last time at Popover Eatery in Simsbury. I just don't know where to begin. I had the Irish Pop, which was eggs, corn beef, potatoes ,cheese and eggs. Firstly, let's start with the popover. It was luke warm at best, obviously made long before it was plated with not even a thought of at least being warmed up before being plated. House made corn beef turned out to be a few pieces of dry, stringy, tasteless pieces of corn beef, complimented by at least three small pieces of potatoes . Furthermore the menu states that the popovers are loaded with eggs and veggies. That would indicate that they're inside the popover, not simply spread on top of the limp, barely lukewarm popover. This will proibably not be on my list of go to breakfast places !!!! read more

We both went with the namesake dish-- Irish popover and the protein popover. The popover itself was huge and a great vessel for the filling, but the eggs were overcooked and underseasoned. The three stars are really related the price vs. the food. My wife and I ordered breakfast. I order 2 scrambled eggs/toast and potatoes. My wife order a popover and eggs. We both also had coffee. As you can see from the picture, these eggs, delivered in a small side plate, were a very small portion size, and the toast was one piece of bread. The bill was $40. When I paid at the front, the credit card machine provided a suggested tip- 30%, or an additional $12- making this a $50+ breakfast. The guy who took my order was wonderful, but the food was disappointing. I drove 20 miles, one way, to try their "famous" popover. Apparently, the popover and te eggs of The Protein were warmed up. Popover has stepped up their game with a refrigerated case full of great Grab and Go entrees. Yesterday I grabbed a hefty container of Lo Mein with quite a bit of Orange glazed chicken. It weighed at least 2 pounds, and at $24 made for a pretty delicious meal and a great value, because we will get 4 servings out of it. We ended up getting the honey matcha latte, peppermint mocha, blueberry muffin, coffee cake and lemon ricotta cake. Honey matcha latte- I had never had something like this before so I wasn't sure to expect! It had a good amount of matcha flavor but not too overwhelming or aggressive as matcha can be if too much is used. Peppermint mocha- this was for my other half but he said he enjoyed it and it was more mocha than peppermint which he said he typically gets the opposite- more peppermint than mocha Coffee cake- HUGE portion. Lots of delicious sugary crumbles in there (just how I like it). We were able to share and split. ricotta cake- also a HUGE portion.
