Such a lovely place for a drink! They've made the most of their unique space in a classic old Victorian house in an epic NW Portland neighborhood. There's a terrific bar space with comfy chairs, a couple secluded rooms with tables, and a few of them by spacious windows. And there is a wonderful outdoor space with tables on the balcony and on an elevated front yard. The warm lighting throughout brings it all to life. Their cocktail menu is rich, creative, and intriguing. One night is not enough to try all that appeal! I greatly enjoyed the Triple Crown Manhattan. It is carefully constructed with a brilliant mix of top-notch ingredients. A delightful drink! Before leaving, I had to try the House Old Fashioned. It was fantastic. Anything but ordinary! I will have to come back to try the other drinks on their menu that stand out for me, especially the Spring Tyme in Portland and Wildwood Waltz. I was also surprised to see that they have an outstanding snack and food menu. And I was told that they make nearly everything in house. I want to try it all. Update: I came back a few weeks later to try the food menu. Had the mixed plate BBQ and it was terrific! Got the coleslaw and potato salad sides and they were super tasty also. Far exceeded my expectations! I'm so glad I decided to return here after visiting several years ago. It's a perfect example of the kind of place I love to visit: warm, inviting, cozy space, excellent food and drink, outgoing, sincere, and personal service. A place of Excellence. So fun!

Phenomenal experience. Penny our server was amazing. The cocktails were delicious and the food was tasty. Great location, cool vibe and an overall wonderful time. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for well crafted cocktails and delicious BBQ.

Amazing place. Manager Austin is awesome and the rest of the staff is very kind. Happy hour food and drinks are a terrific deal. Beef n Cheese sandwich and the Mac and cheese are delicious. If you're a regular then joining the Pope house bourbon derby is a must. 50 bourbons gets you a horseshoe plaque on the wall and 10% off bourbon for life. Perfect and chill place to bring your whiskey connoisseur friends. Highly recommend!

Their whiskey and bourbon selections are broad and staffs are knowledgeable. Their food is also unexpectedly great! I love their deviled eggs and BBQ.

Pope House is a cozy bourbon lounge--smooth Manhattans and tasty veggie snacks hit just right.

It has been ages since I have been to this old school establishment. Last time I was here was for a birthday gathering in the downstairs bar just before the pandemic hit. Fast forward a few years later and a friend wanted to celebrate his birthday with a couple of peeps including myself. I arrived and snagged a table. Service was very prompt and I started off with a hot toddy from the HH menu. For food, I chose the HH mac and cheese along with the pulled pork sliders. My friends arrived shortly and they were also taken care of promptly. There is a special horseshoe plaque on the wall and my friends are a part of the bourbon challenge as I describe it. To earn the first horseshoe, you have to fill out 50 bourbon and they cannot be repeated. One of my friends is already on the 2nd set and to me it looks pretty intimidating. If you want to be a master of bourbon, this is a great challenge to partake in. The food arrived and it's still amazing to this day. The mac and cheese is just as I remembered: creamy, rich, hearty goodness. The pulled pork sliders also won me over as the meat was "melt in your mouth" goodness and the BBQ had a nice spicy kick. For the beer list, I noticed they had a "Temple of Smoke" from Ex-Novo and I enjoyed those as my friends were drinking bourbon to their hearts content. Our server was amazing and would check up on us on how we were doing. The vibe at the house is just as I remembered: cozy, welcoming, very laid back. I can't wait to come back again, cheers!

Mac and cheese and baked beans

Cool Kentucky derby theme lounge right of NW 23rd area. The Mac and cheese was really good. Wasn't super impressed with the beans. Our server was a little uptight that day but we did come right after the big dent event they had so that could have been why.

Pope House Bourbon Lounge was established in 2009, 13 years of longevity, and surviving the pandemic make this charming neighborhood destination a true Portland icon. It's been many years since I've been here. The last time being during a snowstorm. My friend Jeannie J. met me and we enjoyed happy hour inside all toasty and warm while watching, mesmerized as big, fluffy snowflakes drifted down. Happily, my visit yesterday was on a beautiful, sunny day. I arrived before my friend and pretty much knew I wanted the drink they call the the Shifty, which consists of bourbon, fernet and ginger beer. My friend ordered a beer next and I ordered the Jimmy Carter Apology Tour, which is now my favorite drink ever, it's made from coffee infused buffalo trace, cinnamon close syrup and old fashioned bitters. And if you're wondering what is bourbon infused buffalo trace; it's bourbon infused with coffee. This is a very interestingly flavored cocktail. First sip you experience the coffee flavor, then you. Find the flavors o the cinnamon and clove, next you sense all the flavors once. After your first sip, you really notice this cocktail is much more complex than you imagined. First you're confronted with a distinct coffee flavor with the bourbon, then you get a specific flavor of the cloves and cinnamon with the bourbon. It finishes quite complex as you taste all of these wonderful flavors at once. The deviled eggs had a nice amount of paprika sprinkled atop giving them extra flavor. We also shared the pulled pork sliders which had a nice smoky flavor and were very tender. You really can't go wrong at Pope House Bourbon Lounge. 2022 - Review # 21

One of our favorite bars hands down. Inside an old house with ample shady patio outside as well. Dog friendly with full bar service. Staff is super friendly and welcoming. Great menu, not your traditional bar food but options to crave. Excellent variety for mixed drinks. This is our second time and we will be back!

Junebug and Jimmy Carter's Apology Tour

Excellent jaunt! I agree with earlier (and probably better written) reviews: this place rocks it. We were there during Friday's HH and I had an amazing Junebug that was so delicious and perfectly balanced that I want to go back. That does not happen often. And my fries were like those famous ones from the very first fast food chain: crisped to a golden caramel tan line, thin and beautiful with a delicious bourbon laced ketchup (of course!). The interior is appropriately dark and horsey with a kazillion horse shoes with people's names on the wall (no, I did not bother to investigate, sorry). Wonderful and good staff, checking on us regularly. Their location in the Alphabet district is great because there is plenty of parking around Couch Park (pay until 7PM!). So glad I went to meet my Yelpie friend @Tamara C.

Watery, sweet "House Old-Fashioned" and empty rooms, yikes

Love the ambiance and selection of this place. Gives off "first-date" spot vibes. Service is very off-putting, but I forgot that Portland service is just The worst (lived there for 10 years). Traveled all over the world and it's laughable how rude people are there (looking at you, lady w/ blonde hair, glasses, and screechy voice). Old-fashioned is my drink of choice and theirs is overly-sweet and served over maaaany rocks. If you want a great Old-fashioned in Portland, go to Bible Club (*chef's kiss*)... much better service but not as conveniently located. I was wondering why Pope House was so empty on a Sat night on a gorgeous Fall Portland day, but I really think this place is more curb-appeal or an intimate setting for certain occasions rather than a staple.

Inside is dark and cozy, perfect for a rainy afternoon or evening. My only complaint is there is a lot of wood and all the hard surfaces don't reflect noise so it's sometimes challenging to hear. Yes I love a Willamette Valley Pinot or a Washington Cabernet, but I get a lot of those when I'm visiting these areas, which I do frequently. At Muse you can enjoy a red from France, Spain, Italy, as well as local. Lots of whites and some bubbles, too. You can do a tasting of three half glass pours of your choice, or order a glass. Some nights they have tastings that they have preselected. Last night, based on Alex's recommendation, after telling him my preferences, I had the 2021 Crozes-Hermitage from Paris. It was a bigger red, but so smooth. Next I went with the Rioja Gran Reserva which was more fruit forward. Another winner. Their cheese and jam plates are fabulous, the cheese especially delicious, and pair perfectly with the wines. Have a feeling I'll be back frequently to this charming neighborhood wine since my friend works out next door, so it's a perfect meeting spot.
