We had just come from brunch so we did not partake in that deal. The bartender greeted us and handed us menus that lists their beers and food so we had to ask about cocktails. I went with a mezcal to sip. The bar area is nice and similar to the darker wooden decor of the Grand. I had to laugh the next morning when my credit card charge showed as, "That Bar You Were In Last Night."

Lots of options for beer on tap and well made cocktails for being a casual dive bar hidden out of sight. The piquillo peppers and pickled shallots complemented the pork, which was so soft, perfectly. I definitely died and went to heaven at this point in the meal. This is probably when I should've stopped eating because after this point, still pure delight, but my poor stomach was soooooo full. Next was another small bite to lead into my next course, also incredible. Wish I could describe it. My next course was the European sea bass. Now, sea bass is my favorite fish of all time. The perfectly crisp skin, the red onion jam, the spicy sweet balance was perfection. I loved every bite. The olive oil potatoes were a perfect complement. And at this point, I was bursting at the seems... but I still ordered dessert, because you only live once and food is one of the great joys of life. For dessert, I had the crema. Our bartender (who was perfectly friendly and helpful) said he needed his manager to get the free cocktail. To be clear, we had literally no interaction with this woman at any point. So it's not like we did something to piss her off. When she arrived at the POS station - behind the bar about six feet from where we were sitting - she proceeded to complain about the "a-holes" (edited for language) using the Passbook and what a bunch of a-holes those customers were (not knowing we were in earshot). And when the bartender - who knew who we were and that we could hear everything - said in a hushed tone "No, they were nice" she proceeded to tell him that she didn't care and that they're just a-holes. I've never been treated so shoddy in my life in a restaurant for no other reason than using a promotional discount that they voluntarily participated in. It's bad enough to attack your customers for using a discount. But doing it behind the bar where customers can hear you is beyond unacceptable. And doing it when the customers you're talking about are within earshot is the most offensive thing I've ever expereinced at a restaurant. You may go to Steuben's and have a nice meal, but just be aware that behind the bar, they're talking about what an a-hole you are.

She even said she didn't know why I had been skipped. She went to ask the host, and when she came back she confirmed that he had intentionally skipped me. I also overheard him make an inappropriate comment after she questioned him about it. While I couldn't hear every word, it was obvious from the interaction that he had deliberately passed me over because I declined the original seating option. There is a huge difference between politely declining one specific seat and giving up your place in line. The host's attitude was rude, unprofessional, and completely unnecessary. The other hostess handled the situation professionally and was kind, but this host's behavior left an incredibly poor impression. I hope management addresses how guests are treated, because no customer should be spoken about or treated that way. To add to this- I absolutely love the food here, however this is not appropriate customer service

Seems poppies survives in spite of being a mediocre re restaurant. I do not understand how anyone would rate them 5 stars. and one has to wonder about a restaurant that has as many one and two stars as five stars. Yesterday three of us were looking for a place to eat outside, heated. one person was there recently and said the patio was heated and very comfortable, although service was not very good (a common thread with poorer reviews.) We called to see if we needed reservations and asked if the patio was open and heated. Well, the airhead that answered the phone, as she was an airhead, said they do not turn on the heaters during the day. We even asked if they could turn on one of the heaters for us. She said no. She simply restated they do not turn them on during the day. I guess it is ok to freeze in the day trying to eat but not at nite. Needless to say, we did not eat there. I just do not understand, when restaurants are being killed by the pandemic, why someone would simply refuse to even attempt to accommodate customer. As one previous reviewer wrote, "service is so rude and atrocious that you simply can't enjoy a meal there." That has been my experience in the past and why I no longer go there (but we have few choices for the time being). Instead we ended up at Jimmy's Jersey Street Café, on 9th and Jersey. They have an outside seating area surrounded by sheeting. We were greeted by a friendly, smiling hostess who also was out server. She welcomed us in and said we could sit wherever we wanted. We said we wanted to be warm as possible, so she said not to worry and once we were seated, she moved some of the portable propane heaters and focused them on us. Needless to say we were warm and toasty and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Had a reservation for 5 at 5:30. Yes we were late, partly because we couldn't find parking. When we walked in, we were greeted with the statement that we would have to eat fast because they had another reservation for our table at 7:15. After we were seated the first thing the waitress said (pointing at her watch for emphasis) was we don't have a lot of time. You have to be done by 7:15. Then of course the service wasn't fast because it was full and not enough servers. We were rushed through the meal and left our table at 7:17, and they practically pushed us out of the room. There were several empty tables by then, but they had to have our particular table. This could have been handled so much better with better result. We felt unwelcome and rushed. It kind of ruined our going away party for one of our group. Bad vibe Poppies. The food is just not good enough to put up with that rudeness. read more

The one star may be harsh, considering I can't really remember what the food tasted like when I was there, BUT, the service was so awful, atrocious, outrageously rude that I can't even imagine ever going back there. And I make sure to tell everybody I know the same. It wasn't that the servers were complacent or harried or forgetful - they were just plain rude. They insulted my dining partner once to our face as we were leaving, once standing about 2 feet away from our table, they took our plates before we were finished eating, they thought we were ridiculous for asking to see a dessert menu (the server listed off all items at lightning speed and then asked if we wanted her to say them again). I have never ever been treated so poorly in a restaurant. And I will never return there. read more

I regularly like to come in and eat at least 1 month. I enjoy the food, but that's not why I'm leaving this review. There's a specific server that is wonderful, such a great gal. I have witnessed on multiple occasions how AWFUL Jeff is to her. It seems that I have only seen him treat her this way, and no one else. It is inexcusable for him to humiliate her this way in front of the restaurant, leaving many staring. Jeff should be held accountable for his behavior. I don't think I will be returning after witnessing his behavior this last time. read more

I'm single I usually get seated next to the bathrooms. I read the reviews and thought it would be a great prime rib. It was good. The vegetables were cold couldn't melt butter. Baked dressed potato had some cheese,a little sour cream, green onion pieces and no butter. I had to ask for that. Gary was good waiter and seemed to be attentive to my single needs. Bigger tables bring bigger checks and tips, however, I am a customer and should be treated as a paying customer. read more

This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but don't be fooled. The inside decor is old but comfortable but the food makes up for everything. The bartender who took us to our table informed us that a table of 11 had just ordered food and it would take a bit to get our food Was it worth the wait? YES! I had a taco platter 2 tacos beans and rice 10 points. My daughter cheese burger with fries 10 points. My wife chilli raono with rice and beans 10 points. Servers kept us informed about the arrival of our order. Will we return you bet. Good food, great customer service and excellent prices.

She was easy to work with and not only provided an amazing venue for us, but she even reached out to contacts of hers to facilitate donations. There was only a single soft fry, versus a lot of other establishments where they're all offensively soft. These ones could've maybe done with a tiny bit more salt, but no big deal at all. Server was very nice, consistently checking in with me. Also had perfect temperature outside while I was sitting upstairs. The view isn't anything crazy, but it's a nice spot to chill with friends and soak in the area.

Happy hour runs from 3PM-6PM with a couple of beers in that selection for $3. Normal beers like Pacifico run around $7 a pint.
