Poppies what happened??? I've been going to this restaurant for the past twenty years. I hadn't been for a while and when my friend suggested we go there for dinner I was so excited. I always loved the food and thought it was such good quality. Unfortunately tonight that was not the case. The meat was tasteless and not what I ordered. The mashed potatoes were so obviously instant and the veggies were frozen from a bag. I do not expect to go to a restaurant and pay $26 for an entree that consists of something I could do so much better at home. To the owners please bring back the quality you once had. I know the crowd can be a bit geriatric but I'm sure they expect better too. I was simply shocked that this was the same place I once loved. read more

Fall off the bone ribs for "brunch" ..(go big or go home, right?) and my Ama had the salmon with wild rice. I couldn't finish my full slab but it was very yum! I love the interior of the restaurant! Reminds me of a speak easy (the decor is sort of mysterious , dark ). 2 separate dining areas, full bar. Great place! Feels like old school, cozy in the bar area. We had some great cocktails to start off with. I can't quite remember what it was called (its been a minute), but it had st germain in it. bf had a margarita. the other 2 just had some wine. started off with the mussels. really good and flavorful, and plenty in the bowl for 2 (we did 2 orders for 4 people) I had the salmon piccata. really really good and I was able to take half of it home. my bf had a burger and said it was great as well. others had the chicken fried steak, and the other had German Jaeger Schnitzel Dinner. they both said it was outstanding! looking forward to going back soon! def recommend! read more

Food is marginally good. Service is really poor. We were here for 3 hours while the server tried to figure out how to generate our bill and to take payment. Dove sole is totally flavorless. Beef tips in Burgundy are pretty good. Expensive for what you get. read more

If you don't like Poppies it's prolly 'cause you're allergic to old people. Went for the first time after giving it a wide birth for 40 years or so. Definitely not the kinda place to drop in with your Millenial BFFs unless you've decided to get drunk after attending a wake and don't wanna break up the party group. I'm guessing that as a 65 year old who went there with my 89 year old FIL (!), I was one of the youngest people there (if ya don't count the kids/grandkids accompanying their geezer parents out to dinner). At 6:30 the place was jammin'. Rezzies a definite requirement. All this elder-bashing aside, I really really liked the place and will definitely be back with my honey. The atmoshere is 80's red leatherette and wood and they've got an old fashioned live piano player that I hear is very good. I've got a feeling that if you hit it up after 8:00 p.m. the majority of the usual patrons would be back home on their way to bed and so you could have the place relatively to yourself. Had the medium-sized prime rib (12 ozs for I think around $22) which was served with a twice baked potato and some fresh veggies. I thought the dinner was a truly good deal. Worst Thanksgiving meal ever, save your money, and cook at home, or go someplace else. The fact that they even served this garbage baffles my mind. As a native New "Yawka", I am always on the search for a setting that feels like De Niro would casually walk in and order a scotch at the bar... This place gets a bad rep on Yelp!!! It's not trendy. It's a neighborhood hang. The clientele is older and well established, although families are abundant as well. Over the past several years, the management has tweaked the menu without throwing out the tried and true dishes. Think burgers and comfort food with a modest Mexican selection as well. This is a great place to eat. I have come here with my wife several times, and we have never had a bad meal here. I went there with my father the other night for my birthday dinner. It was fantastic. I am sad to see this place have such a low rating. Maybe it is a conspiracy to help keep it from getting too crowded for those of us that love it! Don't let the shopping center it is in fool you. This is a great place with great food. The decor is "unique" but comfortable. Nice soft lighting...kinda feels alittle old school, mobster-esque to me. It is not trendy or high profile, but it is no where near a hole in the wall joint, which helps set it apart from the other places around town. This place has by far the BEST prime rib I have ever had in my life. You can get a very generous portion for a steal of a price, & I can't stress how amazing flavor is; I don't typically eat prime rib because it can taste bland, but here it is seasoned deliciously. Poppies also has a great brunch menu with awesome prices - Eggs Benny for 8.99?! The regular menu has a ton of options, but I have always ordered off of their daily specials which has never failed to be anything but a winner. If you can get there on a day they have their seafood salad, GET IT. It is big enough for two people. I've never had bad service here either. Wanna sit & stay a while for brunch?? They'll keep your coffee filled happily while you enjoy hanging with you friends catching up. Added bonus of the piano player in the evening rocking some Billy Joel! So what if it has an older crowd. Had dinner here on a Saturday night with some friends. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer, and they were all perfectly coated with toppings. Altogether the table got crab legs, prime rib, baby back ribs, chili relleno plate, and all were very delicious! Service and drinks were on point as well. Will definitely be back. read more

I'm sad to review Poppies in this way - because we have been going there for years. The food is usually good and but for the food, I would give 1 star. My daughter was in town and we called ahead to make reservations in the heated tent area - for 4. It just so happened that we discovered my niece was also in town so we asked her along (meaning we showed with 5). The hostess at first told us we didn't have reservations and when she found the reservation and saw we had an extra, refused to seat us under the tent. The crabby waitress jumped on and, though at the time there was NO ONE in the tent, told us that if we wanted to eat at Poppies we had to sit outside. With no other alternative and the day getting late, we donned more gear from the car and decided to tough it out. It was FREEZING. The whole meal the waitress was a b*^ch to us, giving us mean looks and roughly serving our food. The food got cold immediately (big surprise) - I found myself trying to warm my hands on the French dip sandwich. The French dip sandwich was the only redeeming factor in our foray out, after months of eating at home. After our meal we went inside to pay (and warm our toes). It took over 10 minutes standing inside before anyone would help us with the bill. Perhaps the staff is grossly overworked, but not a one of them smiled or made us feel comfortable on any level. When I'm spending over 20.00 a person for lunch, I'm hoping the experience to be positive but there's a whole lotta negative vibes at this place. read more

We stopped in mid-afternoon and had cocktails and food at the bar. We really enjoyed the low-key vibe and the kind of retro feel to the place. It was refreshing to find a restaurant that didn't have an aggressive, focus-group-corporate-fashion interior layout. Very refreshing change of milieu and we much enjoyed it. The bartender was fantastic and made the afternoon very gratifying with great service and a very good social manner that was both engaging and professional. The food was good and the cocktails divine. I have been told this place rocks on weekends with a pianist singer in the lounge who takes requests. I recommend trying to get seating at the bar. It is a large lounge with many bar seats and I think the bar may be Poppies' real strength. If you are looking for something casual and different, definitely old school, Poppies might well be to your liking. read more

This place is what my grandma would call a "classy joint", and frankly, I can see why. The red velvet, the dim lighting, and the warm service all scream fancy. But the charm is that it's fancy while being cozy. It's a killer combo that it is almost impossible to reproduce. They have prime rib and chicken fried steak. They have BOMB fish. And they have the greatest schnitzel you'll ever try. Even though you and I both know you'll never try a schnitzel anywhere else. Plus, The bar tenders are the best around, ask for Summer. Four stars instead of five only because this was my first visit and because prices are a little high even for the specials. The setting is attractive, and the food was very good. The large menu offers lots of variety along with quite a few lunch specials. Everyone in our group had something different. Everything looked great and all were pleased. My open-faced prime rib sandwich was excellent. I asked for sourdough toast instead of whole wheat toast. The au jus was perhaps the best I've ever had, and the creamy horseradish sauce was very good. Broccoli and outstanding mashed potatoes accompanied the sandwich. I had plenty to take home. :-) I arrived first and was seated at a large booth. I had requested a table but was told all the tables were reserved. When the rest of our party arrived with two quite elderly ladies using walkers, a hostess magically appeared and got us the table we obviously needed. That was nice. I don't give one star reviews lightly, we had a terrible experience at Poppie's. Even the good reviews on yelp say that you shouldn't expect much. Staff was rude, inattentive, and inappropriate. We live in the neighborhood and thought it might be a good local spot. We went for the happy hour that was listed on the website to try it out. The bartender said the website hadn't been updated in years and there were no specials, then just put the drink placard in front of us then walked away. The placard was also inaccurate and he scoffed when we asked for more information. He also told inappropriate stories to us and other patrons, then told us they were closing early (not sure that was true, there was just no one there). Probably for the best. read more

We have been coming to Poppies for over a decade. We made our first post Stay at Home reservation on Sunday and decided to try getting back to a new normal sitting inside the restaurant. Of course, they did not disappoint. We shared the Prime Rib dinner and as always it was delish!!! Not to mention the Tom Collins and Lemon Martini from the bar. I would recommend Poppies as they are taking all the precautions addressing COVID. All servers were wearing masks and gloves, they have a no contact menu accessed via bar code scan from your phone, there is one way in and second door to egress and of course they are distancing their patrons by sitting every other table. We will be back to support this restaurant and as always, keep serving us the best Prime Rib in town. read more

Marginal. Pre cooked, sand bagged dishes for the nearly dead. Basically take a corporate holiday party it's pre-fabricated hotel banquet menu and service concept, mix it in a darkened, windowless dusty drenched room saturated in red lighting & the smell of old farts and you have poppies.... I assume they'll cash out once their lease is over being the neighborhood is getting 600 new residents soon. Northern Uhills is zoned MU4-8 (mixed use 4-8 stories) few parts of Denver still have that zoning. If they where smart they'd be more attentive when their new neighbors walk into the bar... We have tried several attempts at this place over the last 5 yrs and clearly if your not some old regular preferred crusty cooter from "the Ranch", they treat you accordingly... I am guessing they aren't forecasting another 10 yrs in business as their disparity to new clientele & menu is now just a bad habit. Complacency never made anything great. Mediocrity never sustains. Would love to see something with a pulse breathe life into this space. read more

This place is a time capsule straight out of the 1970/1980s. It's not trying to be anything but exactly what it is. Great food, no attitude, and pretty amazing martinis. No "opentable" reservations. You gotta call them. And I've been unable to get a table on a weeknight at 6PM without one. That says a lot about their continued success. So, if you're a kale-eating, gluten free Vegan, I suggest you go somewhere else. If you want a good Prime Rib and a killer cocktail, this is your place. read more
