Even though I don't have an account with this bank sometimes I go there to get some change (no coins) when I go shopping inside Nob Hill. However, when I was there today the guy behind the counter flat out said no. So rude! Not cool! Opened an account at First Community Bank in 2008 to take advantage of a high savings rate. This is a small bank branch that is conveniently located in the Nob Hill Supermarket and it's also open 7 days a week. Now that's convenience. There's usually one teller and a manager running this bank and I have always received great customer service. But over the years, the interest rate has gradually declined due to the sign of the times where it was no longer competitive. Due to the consolidation of funds, I had to close out this account and end my relationship at the bank. Maybe one of these days in the future, I'll be back to this customer-oriented bank. read more

I rolled about 30k into this bank in January of last year because last year they were paying 5% but that went down to the current level last month of 2.7 still higher than any other savings account I dare anyone to find. This is a great bank if you like personal service from a small group of employees dedicated to service and customer respect and assistance. CHASE: Is it really that hard to cash a check? So finally!!! I got paid for a photo used in the National Geographic book Food Journeys of a Lifetime, after over a year of waiting and lots of rigimorol. The check, (or cheque as they spell it back in Jolly Olde Englande,) was for a whooping $105 US Dollars. I emphasize US Dollars because when my bank, the same bank, was called Washington Mutual they couldn't cash checks in foreign currencies. So when the publisher, Toucan Books, asked me how I wanted payment, I chose the check in US Dollars. My old bank WAMU has been bought out by Chase Manhattan. And recently they installed these spiffy new ATM machines that read your checks. Unfortunately, the spiffy new ATM, repeatedly spat out my "cheque." Oddly enough there wasn't an option to deposit a check the ATM didn't recognize, it would just keep spitting it out and saying unreadable, despite the nicely printed text all over. So I went in and "queued up" to see a teller (I'm having fun with the Englishisms!) After about an half hour of this young man trying, and phoning what sounded like a similar corporate labyrinth that we lowly customers must traverse, the teller stated without much confidence, that if the amount was for less than US$300 they can't cash it. Or perhaps they might, he said, but the fees would be so much as to only leave me with a few dollars. He really didn't sound too sure. And he said that they don't usually deal with this sort of thing. This took place about a 20 minute drive from San Francisco's Financial District. Well, Chase Manhattan, the world's seventh largest bank, and the third largest bank in these United States is apparently unable to cash checks drawn on foreign banks. Even in US Dollars if the amount is for less than $300. If the check was for less than $300 but drawn on the British bank HSBC (which happens to be the eighth largest bank in the USA for that matter. No wonder our country and our banks seem like such a basket case. Our citizens typically can't speak any foreign languages, at least those of us who've been here for more than a couple generations. And it would seem the same with our banks. They can't read a cheque if it's written in British English! So, I tried to be polite to the poor teller who spent the half an hour of his day trying to figure out why he can't cash my cheque. But I hopped in the car and headed off to another bank we use for our savings, First Community Bank, a small bank based in Santa Rosa that has a branch in our local Nob Hill. This little tiny bank managed to check with their head office and take care of my cheque in about five minutes. So much for the big banks! read more

After Bank of Marin totally screwed up what was once a wonderful bank (Bank of Alameda) we switched to First Community Bank because the hours and location were convenient and because we're old we got free checking. This is a wonderful bank! The staff know who we are and take care of us. They even called me to check on a small purchase from a company in China (it was an ebay purchase). They wanted to make sure that it was legitimate purchase. That's personal and caring service. Love this bank! read more

I transferred some money here because they had a great inital rate on a savings account and because I was looking for a bank to replace the Alameda WAMU (this was way before they were bought, although if the WAMU branch level incompetence was any indication of the WAMU upper management level incompetence, I can see why they went down). I'm not a problem child, mostly use the ATM, phone & e-banking, only rarely enter a branch, so my expectations and needs are generally fairly low. When I opened the account I asked if they could hurry as I needed to pick up my daughter. No problem, I was in & out in no time. Then I made a significant deposit at the ATM, but goofed and put it into my checking not savings and they called me. They CALLED me to verify. I was dumbfounded. Next I needed a check cut and a copy of the check faxed to my realtor, a request I made over the phone and again, no problem, it was done. Jennifer called the realtor to make sure the fax arrived (without being asked to do so, just part of her great service ethic!!). And when I decided to transfer my daughter's account from WAMU to FCB, there were some snags, but they followed up, kept me informed of what was happening and provided excellent service. FCB has a stellar team at this branch!! It's so nice to feel like a valued customer again, not just some faceless number being served by a soulless drone. read more
