Some very good vegetarian options and desserts. I love their poppyseed bread too. Lately I haven't wanted to go back due to prices though. Awesome, awesome restaurant that was well worth the (frustrating) wait. But I'm chalking that up to COVID. First, this is my kind of restaurant. Creative high-quality dishes in an unpretentious space. Solid cocktails, too, that didn't break the bank. Coconut Cauliflower: Umm, wow. Or, more so, my meal Partner was blown away (as was I, to be clear). But she wouldn't stop speaking about this. Still won't. The cauliflower was crisp, not soggy. The lime coconut broth had us mopping is up, scooping it up, every last drop. We even got a litte naw-tay and combined them to the Fries (see below). Banh Mi Dirty Fries: these were also delicious. It could have easily just been a hodgepodge of random flavors, delicious apart but a bit of a cluster together. Yet everything seemed to stand out in its own way. The sriracha aioli was drizzled on. The pickled daikon and carrot added some refreshing crisp. The pork belly bits added some good salt. Key Lime Shrimp: Also very good, but stood out less among the other heroes. Maybe the key lime butter sauce could have had just the slightest bit of flavor, but I also appreciate that they weren't trying to go too aggressive on that front. Found this place by chance as we were traversing through Traverse City and boy am I glad we did!! This place is fantastic; especially great for vegetarians with tonnes of options. Great drinks, even better food. The coconut cauliflower was such a complex, well crafted, clever dish; hats off to the chef. I was in Traverse city for 24 hours and I found my way there twice. Poppycocks is one of my favorite local restaurants in TC, and this visit did nothing to change that for me. I purposely went in the late afternoon so that I wouldn't be crowded with people. They always have three soups on their specials board, and the coconut black bean bisque sounded intriguing. I ordered a cup and it was delicious. As a person who could stand to lose a few pounds, but loves to eat, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I can find an appetizer or small cup of soup that packs a lot of flavor in a small portion. Although I'm not vegetarian, I decided to try the Lentil Dahl Curry for my main dish. It was also very flavorful and probably healthy as well. While wine tasting, we asked some locals where they'd recommend eating. They said Poppycocks doesn't get as much fanfare as other places, but it's a solid option. I'd agree. We began with the pita chips appetizer ($11). This was great. They come dusted with grated cheese and three dipping cups - melty cheese, spicy salsa and hummus. Outstanding. We also ordered the tomato soup. While the soup was just okay, it came with the most incredible dinner roll ever. Super chewy and fluffy. I ripped off chunks of the roll and dipped it in the soup. Amazing. I could have eaten that all night long. I was disappointed in my entree, though. I got the Honey Chipotle Brisket ($24) [Slow braised beef brisket served with a honey chipotle pan jus, red pepper pesto, sweer potato fries and sautéed vegetable.] The honey made everything way too sweet. While the brisket was nice and tender, the sauce was kind of vile. I would definitely return to Poppycocks and try another entree. The outstanding appetizers lead me to believe there's more goodness on the menu. read more

Dinner tonight while on vacation in TC. Emily was our waitress and did an excellent job on recommendations and serving. We were fortunate to get a 6:45 reservation as they were pretty busy tonight.we were seated promptly. Emily didn't miss a beat as the dining crowd grew. We had been at the wineries almost of the afternoon so the wife declined a drink. I ordered a vanilla lemon drop which was quite good. Asked Emily for recommendations. I went with the braised short ribs and wife had pesto pasta. The short ribs included some Brussels sprouts and was simply excellent from top to bottom. Pasta was pretty good although wife felt it was a little oily. Both of our salads were crisp and Emily amply supplied us with bread. Will definitely come back on next visit to TC. read more

We arrived at around 1:30 on a Thursday afternoon. I could not believe how packed this place was. We waited around for a very long time with little to no recognition. But we knew the food would be worth it. Finally we were seated. It wasn't the waiter's fault - he was so busy it was ridiculous. He was barely able to come to our table at all. Once the food arrived it sure was great! We got the veggie tostada appetizer. I got the mediterranean salad which was incredible and my husband got the grilled cheese which he loved. The key lime pie for dessert was great. What ruined the experience was the fact that the phone literally did not stop ringing. I'm serious - it literally rang the entire time we were in the restaurant. No one answered it. It just rang and rang. Finally we were so addled we just packed up the food and left. I think with more space and wait staff this place would be wonderful - as it is, the food is fantastic but the wait times and lack of staff really makes it difficult to want to come back. read more

My husband and I came to Poppycocks 2 nights in a row while in Traverse City, we enjoyed it so much. The first night I had a martini and a veggie taco (I believe--I had a couple of martini's so it was blurry) and whatever it was was delicious. The next night I had a salad and a different martini and my husband had the burrata although he didn't know what it was. Again everything was very good. Salad was fresh and their house balsamic dressing was delicious. I was looking forward to trying their Market Steak, but was disappointed as they had run out. Settled for the Lamb Ragu, which was tasty but not what I was craving. Portion sizes were good. Prices were fair. I got key lime pie for dessert, but I wasn't super impressed with it. Came for lunch on the high recommendation of locals and wow we weren't disappointed: terrific inventive food and cocktail game is on point. First off, Bahn Mi fries are terrific: using sweet potato fries is brilliant for the added sweet touch, and then getting a bite with all the toppings combined for the perfect Bahn Mi flavor; crispy pickled veggies, hot jalapeño, creamy sriracha mayo, umami meat bites. The Reuben is phenomenal- corned beef is gorgeous and the bread is so unique, I've never had focaccia with rye, it was a total mind bender. Also tried the lamb ragu which was as good as any I've had in Little Italy-- well stewed which mellows out the slight gaminess wine can have, really well balanced and rich, which is great for a cold day. Oh and the tomato spinach Swiss soup, though it sounded odd to me, was also great: it's a tomato base with some Swiss within, which evokes a French onion vibe. Lastly, the cocktails are wonderful, and we all tried something different and were delighted. I had the basil Mary, which was like an alcoholic tomato basil soup (but yummy since that sounds odd- I would love to try it with red pepper to keep the Italian style going and add more heat), bro-in-law got the friki tiki, which is a strong sipping drink with incredibly layered flavor: first tropical, then at the end the chartreuse hits giving it a fernet-like flavor, the London fog had a really delicate aromatic lavender and nice light foam from the whites, and I adored the MI Stormy Mojito, a perfection of a mashup between a mojito and a dark and stormy (why haven't I had this before!) Definitely splurge on a drink with your food, you cannot go wrong. read more
