Incredible getaway without leaving NYC! Once we entered (on a whim) Pop's Cocina & Bar, I felt like we were on vacation in a foreign country. The music and elegance of the atmosphere was rejuvenating and relaxing. I was so glad we walked into this beautiful hidden gem on Jamaica Avenue. I couldn't believe that such a place existed here. I felt like I walked into a restaurant in Manhattan. We started with drinks. Kids drinks came in plastic containers while adult drinks came in glass ones. We ordered Diet Coke, Sprite, Mango juice and Strawberry juice. The juices were thirst quenching and hydrating. We had steak and eggs for the 1st time and it was perfectly pink in the center with a crispy, juicy exterior. The potatoes were just right. The Eggs Benedict was just right with the yolk oozing out after you bite into it. The fettuccine Alfredo was sauced just right, not too much or too little. The California Omelette was delicious and done just right. The kids pancake was just the way our kids liked them, with sliced strawberries on top. The strawberries were so yummy, we ordered a side of them just for our kids to munch on. It was smart to give our kids crayons to draw on the paper tablecloth. It kept them busy and helped our family create a happy memory of tic-tac-toe between parents and kids. POP's Cocina & Bar definitely deserves my Yummylicious Stamp of Approval and two thumbs up! A New York City feel with Woodhaven, Queens. The service was cordial and efficient. I was working and they let me work in peace. I ordered Chicharon de Pollo with rice and beans, a common, no nonsense dish. It was soon presented exquisitely with three dishes Manhattan style and nicely garnered. Sorry no picture as I soon asked for a regular plate to eat my food all together Dominican Style. Brick walls accented with floor to ceiling windows and nuvo chic music with a heavy downbeat competed for my attention. I honestly thought this was a typical diner. So the restaurant was a total surprise. The Chicharon just chicken breast, cut and fried. But it was acceptable. Ugh. 4% service charge. Not cool. I love this place. Their food and service has actually gotten better over the years, and it was good to begin with. I ordered the Churrasco, because any type of red meat covered in chimichurri sauce is going to be delicious. It's some kind of law or something. The waitress was friendly and attentive. We got everything quickly and she checked up on us a few times. The decor is nice, and the place is always clean, and seems to draw a decent crowd at all times. We Went on a Wednesday night. Food was well cooked. We had the Buffalo wings and tostones with shrimp and guacamole. They have happy hour from 4pm - 10pm, but no menu for happy hours drinks. Happy hour offerings include frozen margaritas, margaritas on the rocks, sangria and rum punch. The margaritas come in several flavors (passion fruit, mango to say a few). They are unprepared which can be a problem to people with diet restrictions. They need to do better with that. Also, the menu didn't say that the penne alla vodka would be served with cheese on top (I'm not supposed to have cheese) but it had all this cheese on it! Came across this place with my wife not too long ago and I can say with the highest level of honesty that anything on the menu blows your taste buds away! Today we are trying their famous "Mata Hambre". As the picture suggests, it for sure did kill the hunger. Was in the area & we decided to stop into this lil Spanish restaurant.... very nice & open dining room with plenty of seating ... Love the old nostalgic wood workmanship all around ... Very clean !!! The waitresses were very nice & friendly ... took our order right away ..... This spot definitely more of a lunch & dinner & bar spot if you ask me ..... My wife ordered the bacon & cheese omelette with rye toast ... & I ordered the Mexican omelette with chorizo & cheese & peppers ... thought it would have a lil heat & spice to it ... had to add a Lil hot sauce & I was good to go ... Also ordered a side of their corn beef hash from the can .... I liked it .... just had to get it well done with a lil crisp & it was delicious ... as well as their home fries ... portions are a lil on the smaller side which we didn't mind .... we all need to get back to what a normal size portion should be ..... Coffee was also very good & fresh served with ice cold milk & cream ... The food did take a Lil on the longer side to arrive to our table .... FYI, there were only three other tables ... so if your in a hurry you might want to make other arrangements..... Their outdoor dining is limited to ONE server. Which makes it very hard to get their attention. Their $28 skirt steak with fries seems out of White Castle. Very thin, NOT QUALITY and not your typical skirt steak. Beware. It is disappointing to a meat lover. The penne a la vodka came cold. The steak quesadilla came with one side empty and one side meaty. The pitcher of water came with one glass even though we were a party of 4. So needed 4 glasses or I guess we would share? We had to ask for Utensils and plates. Basically for what they charge they lack attentiveness and service tactic. As customers, who want to support these small businesses, they make it very hard to give them praise or stars since they feel we owe them something. Not a good feeling. The only good thing I will say the drinks (Rum punch) was good, the decor was nice. Look else where. I have had their breakfast and it is much better. I have been a customer of Pop's for over 20 years even before it turned into Pop's Cocina. Sorry guys but spending over $200 I expect much better service. read more

I ordered the steak and onions and after about an hour and a half, it was finally ready to be picked up and when I had told the lady I was going to sit down and have it with my friends, it took even longer for it to come out. Okay so let me start off by saying to not judge by it's location!! I don't live far from this place and the area isn't cute, it's your typical Jamaica streets with delis and shops, etc... Hard to find parking around also. But the actual place once you step inside, totally different ambience. My fiancé and I went at night, and it was alittle dark inside the restaurant, with twinkly lights in the ceiling. It's def a date night type of restaurant. They attended us right away and everything was in a timely matter. For an appetizer we got the tostones relleno, for the price, I think it was too damn expensive for 2 tostones with guacamole and a shrimp, but the presentation was pretty. Taste- 8/10My fiancé got the matahambre plate which is mofongo I believe in the bottom, cheese, skirt steak, and topped with grilled shrimps. He said it was a 10/10. The chimichurri sauce was delicious too. I got the "chicharrón de pollo sin hueso" and a side of mashed potatoes. It was okay, nothing crazy. They gave us a big glass bottle of water that stayed on the table for us to serve ourselves and drink when we want water (def a great idea). Can't remember the drinks I got, I believe it was an lemonade alcoholic drink- MANN it was SPIKED. Like it goes straight to your head, hard to finish. Despite the sucky reviews, and my wife's review from the first time she came here( without me), I've visited twice and I have absolutely no complaints. The service I received was quick and efficient. No more than a 5 minute wait each time before someone was at my table checking if we'd like coffee. Eaten the GOLPE MAS FUERTE both times and not disappointed either time. I love this plate because I'm greedy and it's got every single thing I want a taste of, salami, longaniza, AND chicharrón in addition to the mangu, queso frito, and eggs. This time my wife had the churrasco and eggs. The steak could've used a dash more of salt but no biggie. They also offer chimichurri sauce for the steak but we skipped on that. This comes with "toast" as well. With a few various options, the brioche is actually a burger bun not sliced bread. But so what ?! Same great taste. New owners have taken over and I couldn't be happier. I have been here 3 times since the new female owner took over. She's very nice. She usually sits in the restaurant and does her own thing, but is always aware if a customer needs anything or checks up on you. I see they have kept my favorite waitress. She's the one with smiles the most. :) They have kept my favorite breakfast- the feta cheese omelet with potatoes and added new favorites such as the tres golpes. Under the elevated tracks of the J train in Woodhaven sits "New Pop's Restaurant". This locale was once an old style bar, complete with a large mirror behind a bar, dark wood moldings, beautiful stained glass work along the walls and very distinctive booth seating. Part of the appeal is feeling like you've been transported back in time. Some of the parts of this place need some work like their display case for desserts, which looks like it needs some serious external repairs, but I tend to find such things help make, not break, an atmosphere. Clearly the bar was bought out ages ago and turned into a diner. The family that runs the place is super friendly. We were all seated quickly and I found myself quite amused at their menu, which included some awesome sounding items like challah bread french toast and kids meals named after super heroes (I almost ordered the "Batman"). Service was very quick and efficient. I ordered a simple breakfast of two eggs sunny side up, toast and ham. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the toast was warm and crispy. My girlfriend had the challah bread french toast with cheese and turkey on top - and man that was really nice. The french toast was thick, fluffy and tasty though I confess the turkey was a bit dry. My other friend also had their sausage, which was good and a bit spicy. I also really enjoyed their coffee and had several cups. Best of all, the prices were are very reasonable.
