Went yesterday for brunch and decided to go again today. Glad I did because the second time, service was better than the first. Porch Cafe is located on the east side of Beach Town. It's an upscale but relaxed kind of place where casual attire is fine but the food shows up dressed for the occasion. The food was absolutely the star. Yesterday I started with the watermelon salad and my husband had the melon salad with pesto sauce. They were both so good that he ordered the melon salad again today and I ordered the mussels and fries. The mussels were tender and the sauce that comes dressed on the fries, delicious. For my entree I ordered the avocado toast both days because it was just that good. For my husband's entree he ordered the risotto and added shrimp. It was good but he could do without the tomato sauce. And his old fashioned was made just right which for us is always the tell of a serious bar. Thank you, Bartender. Today we were greeted as soon as we walked in but yesterday we stood waiting for someone to greet us. And then we were told it was going to be a 10-15 minute wait for our table. I told her we'll wait because I'm sure it won't take 15 minutes to prepare one of the four empty tables that simply needed cleaning. It took them 2 minutes to seat us. We came for Sunday brunch and saw on their website that they had plenty of available reservation slots for that morning and also took walk-ins. We walked in with only three tables filled inside, waited for ten minutes before the hostess came and were told it would be an hour wait. I immediately booked a reservation on the spot that was available in fifteen minutes. We walk back up to the hostess station and had to wait another ten minutes before I could show the hostess my reservation. Despite the reservation, it was clear that they just didn't want to serve us but did so begrudgingly. The staff gave us dirty looks and the service was slow at best which is a shame because the food was quite good. After paying, the hostess apologized and explained it was because they were busy setting up a reserved table for a party in the back. Seems like they could do with more staff if they can't even handle three tables. read more

The restaurant is definitely lacking in service. We had reservations and when we arrived, it was a 20 minute wait for a table inside. We agreed to sit outside and asked if they could turn on the fans, but they were broken (all 3 fans broken in July). There were five of us and they would only allow three separate checks. One person wanted to pay in cash and they said they couldn't give change. A friend ordered the gnocchi (not pictured), which just tasted like potatoes. We arrived after lunch time and the place wasn't very busy. We sat down outside on the porch and our server, whom was very sweet and friendly, brought us our waters very quickly. My mother and I then ordered their Spritz Fever. Hers without alcohol and mine with. We then waited about 10 minutes watching other tables that sat after us get mixed drinks. Meanwhile our server doesn't come back to the table. Her other tables were also looking around. Getting up and getting there own salt and pepper shakers. Their own napkins. Im not sure if she's new but she was not giving her tables good service. I work in the food industry and am a manager and the service being provided was just terrible. When she saw us starting to leave, she rushed over and tried saying I have your drinks coming are you ready to order. We just said the other tables after we sat got there drinks and that we were going to leave. She asked if we wanted our drinks togo because they were made we just said no. If she had brought them to the table then we might have stayed. If the drinks were taking this long to get, I could have only imagined how long it was going to take for us to our food. We were offered complimentary breakfast at our hotel.... Hard NO.. So we looked for a good quiet restaurant away from the pier area noise. Porch Cafe is absolutely your quiet more quaint restaurant with a far more elegant menu. So why not more stars on my review? Here is why. My wife loves chicken and waffles, i love them more. On the online menu it shows a great looking plate of chicken and waffles, when we sat down and looked at the menu, they were nowhere to be found. The server told us that they do a really bad job at that... :/ Our plates were presented very well. The topping on my pancakes were absolutely delectable. The pancake itself though was not Aunt Jemima quality, yes i said it HATERS .. :) My bride partook of the French Toast Brioche, now those were spectacular. She loved them. The coffee, hmmm, coffee. They had to go look for sugar offsite, but eventually got some, no lemon for my water, but said had limes, but never got them. Overall though, it was good, definitely recommend it. read more

We are at the Galvestonian condos regularly, and made this a lunch spot- burger and keep it simple. The service was extremely slow. We had three people in the party and ended up with a $250 bill. The three appetizers and one entree were regrettably horrible. The staff seemed to be more focused upon having a good time of their own than patrons. We inquired with others at the condos and they stated the same, 'just go for expensive burger and only for lunch' . So sad as it uniquely situated and used to have amazing food. read more

Not a good experience, customer service could use more help and training. Seemed to have an excuse for everything. Ordered a mezcal cocktail, came in large glass with no mezcal to be detected. Ordered ceviche, brought it out with saltine crackers. Ceviche had a bone in it. Fries were good. Daughter ordered a sweet tea her BF ordered a Shirley temple, took 15 min to bring them their drinks, the sweet tea was water with a drop of sweet tea in it?? We were here about an hour and never got a chance to order entrees because the staff was scurrying around frantic trying to cover the floor, we asked for the check. They apologized and said thank you for understanding. We arrived about 2:20 bc on the website it said the cafe closed at 3:00. We were told seating stopped at 2:30 to try again later for dinner or to go tomorrow earlier. The hours should say closes at 2:30 instead of 3:00 so customers can make appropriate choices. Because The Porch Cafe is way on the east side of the island, this would be important information for potential customers to know. read more

If I could give it less than One star, I would. We took a $35.00 Uber from the other end of the island to get to it. It is a few miles from the Galveston hot spots. When we got there (with a reservation) we waited forever to be seated. Once seated, no one came to take a drink order. My wife went to the bar and was told there was only one server working the ENTIRE restaurant. We ended up walking out and waiting 18mins for another $$$ Uber because the restaurant is so far out. This restaurant is so cute and has ambiance. We asked to sit outside on the porch. We were seated and then it took awhile to get our drinks. That should have been a sign how the rest of our meal would go. To give some background, when we parked in the parking lot and walked in, there were several groups of young teenagers dressed in formalwear having their photographs taken so it must have been some formal school dance, Prom perhaps? The young men and women looked so great and were having a great time. So, to be fair, maybe they were unusually busy that evening. We finally ordered our entrees and then settled in to wait. And wait. And wait. Ok, the kitchen is probably backed up. After taking a few patience pills, our meals were delivered and served to us. The food looked and tasted great! 5 stars for the food! We enjoyed our meal very much. After we finished eating, we waited for our check. And waited. And waited. Hubby finally went to find our server to ask for a To-Go container for the other half of the crab and shrimp linguine and our check. Then we waited some more. And even waited some more. It was so ridiculous the amount of time we waited to get our check. We had our credit card ready to that they wouldn't have to come back to get and thus resulting in even more wait time. After yet another wait, they brought our check after the credit card was processed. Finally, we were free to leave! I think we were there a total of almost two hours! Not last year "Porch" new management , new staff, new menu .... moved up on our list from avoid to a must try . Will have to see if they gave sustainability . The happy hour menu is more limited, however reasonably priced , available ( they often ran out before) and tasty . Drinks are fine nothing special ! We went here for a friend's birthday brunch as I had to been the restaurant in previous years and it was amazing. The food was not flavorful sadly, and that includes the French toast and pancakes we had high expectations for. The service was a little slow, but the waiter was very nice regardless. Please note that if you come with a large party, they can only split the bill four ways and there is an automatic 20% gratuity on parties over 6 (not necessarily a negative, more of just a note). The ambiance is very enjoyable and Beachtown is very beautiful, especially in the warm months. The only really reason to come is for the atmosphere and the views frankly!! read more

My beautiful wife and I stopped here for brunch during our visit to Galveston. It was in a charming building by the ocean. The place made really good use of the beachside bungalow vibe. Our server was friendly and was quick. The people we talked to there were very nice. I ordered the gulf shrimp tacos. They were well prepared and full of flavor. This place is not very good. This was not our first visit to Porch Cafe but likely our last. We went there during restaurant week on a Saturday night and there were maybe 15 customers. That tells you a lot. The prices are way higher than the quality of the food would justify. Portions are small and sides are additional. A couple drinks and dinner clocked in at $100 per person! Two of us ordered shrimp and grits. It was awful. There were 3 medium-sized grilled shrimp and two tablespoons of lumpy grits swimming in some watery salty brown sauce that turned it all into shrimp soup. You literally needed a spoon to eat it. The red snapper was a decent-sized piece of fish but it was buried under some weird sauce and topped with giant stalks of broccolini. Any chef should know you don't bury a nice flaky fish like snapper under vegetables. Serve them on the side! The wedge salad was not a wedge at all. It looked like a house salad spread out on a plate with bizarre slices of fried bacon on top. I suspect the bacon was left over from brunch. Presentation was terrible. The caesar salad was 3 or 4 stalks of romaine lettuce laid on a plate with a small amount of dressing and a few giant croutons. I hate lazy chefs that just lay lettuce on a plate and call it a salad. My husband and I came for their special four-course Valentine's Day menu last night and it was quite possibly the best meal I've had. November 8, 2020...they need to update their Yelp covid protocol because the dining room is and (has been) open! We wanted to sit on front porch facing the gulf but, it wasn't open. Darn. We ended up on the back porch. Me and a friend went for their wine or whiskey pairing four course dinner. We started with whiskey but after 1, we switched to wine. Jackson our server was as awesome! We had a Pinot Noir served with fresh tomato soup (we thought it tasted like spaghetti tomato sauce so my friend didn't finish hers) and it did have the consistency of tomato sauce true that...but, I ate mine! We had a green salad with fresh berries in a sweet vinaigrette...lovely. Served with a white Sancerre (which is like a Sauvignon blanc. Good. Chef Dustin brought the salads out and introduced himself. 3rd course 14 ounce ribeye cooked medium rare with garlic mash and broccolini. Delish. Served with a Cabernet Sauvignon. Chef came out again after we finished dinner and before dessert to see how we liked everything...we told him it was good. He so wanted to impress. Probably because this restaurant has gone through 10+ chefs in the 8 years I've lived here! Hmm?! But, honestly it was okay food. The restaurant used to pride itself on farm to table ingredients...we weren't too sure tonight that that was still in place. Last course, we shared one scoop homemade vanilla ice cream topped with granola and chocolate and one small ramekin of creme brûlée' ...yummy! This place is very cute and located in a picturesque area of town that I've never really been to. The menu is small but has a good selection of items for lunch/brunch. I had the Cajun chicken sandwich and there truly wasn't anything Cajun about it. It had a spread on it that was seasoned with Cajun seasonings but there wasn't much on there so you couldn't really taste it. Wouldn't recommend. (The sweet potato fries were sooo good, though!) I also recommend the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. I definitely would have that again. Overall just okay. The prices are high and service wasn't great, but that's expected now days with staff shortages everywhere. One thing that struck me as odd was that they literally had zero condiments except for their house jalapeño ranch. No ketchup, honey mustard, nothing. And the waitress said it had been a few days. This was our first time eating at Porch Cafe and dinner was amazing! Happy hour was till 7 on a Friday night which was a wonderful surprise. The fried green tomatoes and watermelon salad were both light, refreshing, and delicious as starters. The crab cakes, tomato risotto, and gnocchi were all wonderful mains. And don't get me started on the pistachio bread pudding, probably one of my favorite desserts! The service and drinks were both great as well. I came here Saturday morning for a birthday brunch, the place is super cute right along the beach. When we ordered we all got the porch burger however it took a turn for the worse, my friend had a long gray hair in her burger and it made all of us grossed out and when we told our server all they did was take the burger away and asked if she would want another. When the check arrived she still paid full price for the burger she didn't eat. Although I don't think we had a bad server at all, he was a very sweet man, I think this was all the kitchens fault. The Porch Cafe is a darling little restaurant in Beach Town that looks like a southern beach town. There are steps going up to the second level, and no elevator that I saw, so make sure your guests can climb stairs. The staff is very friendly and pleasant. My husband ordered a gouda hamburger with parmesan fries and I ordered crab eggs benedict. The hamburger came out with no gouda, just regular cheese and had something really spicy in it so my husband could not eat it. The menu did not indicate spice of any kind. My husband says it look like the meat was defrosted improperly, as it was cooked unevenly. The waitress graciously took the food back and replaced it with a crab salad sandwich. This also had underlying spice to it but not a strong. The parmesan fries are out of this world, crazy good! The highlight of our visit. The eggs benedict was cooked perfectly and was pretty good, but a little mixed salad in between the two eggs would've been a nice touch. I've seen that in previous pictures taken from other customers. It seemed to ask that the chef may have a spice them running through all the dishes. I also had a bloody Mary which was very good ($15) and my husband had a glass of wine ($12) dollars. Total bill was $87 with tip. What a wonderful dinner we had at Porch Cafe and be sure and ask for Shara. She did a great job and makes the whole meal more enjoyable! The place itself gorgeous first of all, the sun comes in so perfectly as the porch is shady and warm. The staff was so kind and inviting, we got there about thirty minutes before their open time (on accident) and the Chef welcomed us right in and said they were ready to cook anything! They could have asked us to come back when they were open but instead made us feel so comfortable. THE FOOD, was amazing from the perfectly cooked chicken and waffles (the chicken was so juicy and deliciously seasoned) to the SMOKED GOUDA JALAPEÑO GRITS (which I'm still daydreaming about three days later) to the delicious made in house desserts. Our server was absolutely professional and attentive, and again compliments to the Chef, everything was PERFECT. I had high hopes for this restaurant, but sadly it was a huge letdown. We were not given our drinks (not even water) for a solid 25-30 minutes after sitting. When our waitress did come by our table she was rushing, but never once apologized for the delay. It took about an hour and a half for us to receive our steaks, which were very undercooked and I had to send mine back. I'm usually very understanding, but our waitress did not even check on us once throughout the meal. So I am not sure if they were severely understaffed or if their chef suddenly up and quit, but something was definitely off if you compare our experience to the more positive reviews.
