TLDR: poor service, wouldn't come back. Ambience: The establishment is well decorated with an almost South Beach Miami vibe mixed with some Galveston flare. I would say it's very "Instagram worthy", but that seems it's all that's offered. We did not have a reservation but were sat immediately. Food: I ordered the Poke Bowl which was very fresh but lacked some flavor. The ahi tuna wasn't amazing. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits which was far too heavy for her and seemed more like a soup. We also ordered coffee that was too sweet for our liking. Service: the waiters were great and offered recommendations. The bartenders were also welcoming. The issue we had was with a managerial/owner level employee. She was assisting wait staff by delivering food and clearing tables but did so in a rushed and disrespectful manner. I've been here a couple of times. I don't think I'm the desired clientele. Seems like a nice place for a bridal shower. The brunch menu usually scares me out of a visit, but this place does a pretty good job of offering plenty of lunch items. When I come to Galveston, I like to get seafood everywhere I go. This place had founder which is not an average thing to find. Fried is my least favorite way to enjoy fresh seafood. The breading just covers up the fish completely and flounder is very delicate. It was so thick I could just peel it off. What was left was a very sad unseasoned fish. The rest of the dish was great. I asked the server if I could have ordered the founder blackened instead of fried. It seemed like they were willing to try and also said they could sub blackened Mahi instead of the flounder wouldn't do well. I do appreciate the staff. I may be back but not during brunch. Came here for dinner on a Monday night. We didn't have a reservation and didn't need one for two people. Someone recommended this restaurant to me for brunch but early in the week (Mon/ Tues) they open in the evening. The decor inside and out is very cute! Everyone we encountered was kind! The service was really friendly. The food was DELICIOUS, and the portions are generous! They start you off with a pimento spread with crackers and it is so tasty. They have an extensive cocktail menu and a nice selections of wines. I ordered the flounder and it was great! My mom got the fish tacos and she loved them. Some folks were dressed nicely and others were dressed more casually. This place is pretty popular, so there is probably going to be a line. There are nice beach chairs and a bar for you to enjoy while you wait. All of the drinks looked really good. Our wait was 25 min, but it was a bit longer and I lost track of time. They request a phone number, but dont have a corresponding system to text you, just a young lady calling names that you hope to hear. Parking: Parking is a bit of a situationship. My advice: read all of the street signs because some streets require you to pay and the signs are very faded. Street parking is available because they dont own any lots. Also, the Galveston Pakring enforcement were out giving tickets. Food: The pictures online are sooooo amazing. It just makes you want to order everything. Plus, the menu is very descriptive. Our table ordered the usual Brunch stuff the blueberry pancakes, French toast, shrimp and grits, and chicken and waffles. I would say the best of them would be the chicken and waffles. Shrimp and grits was an acquired taste... it was a bit smoky and not a natural smoke. More like a liquid smoke and the tomato base wasnt quite cooked down all the way. The pancakes were so big and they looked light and fluffy, but they had a cornmeal consistency that I wasn't a fan of. You could see the blueberries, but couldn't really taste the lemon. A lot of effort went into the decor, it's beautiful and airy. It has some nice outdoor seating as well. Staff are very nice. Unfortunately, the food was subpar. The S&R Burger was so salty neither of us could eat it. It wasn't just the toppings, it was the burger patty itself. Paired with the pimento it made you squeeze your eyes shut with how salty it was. The Caesar salad was dressed a little lightly but good. The goat cheese salad was okay, I think a more balsamic-heavy dressing would complement the sweetness better. The fried green tomatoes were disappointing- it's mostly corn bread with very thin slices of fried tomatoes on top. The cornbread was so dry you couldn't pick it up with a fork, it just crumbled. Had a pretty poor experience here. Our group was celebrating bachelorette. It was very windy and after a long wait, we were sat outside without any nearby heater and we were freezing. The waiter ended up forgetting one of our orders. I got the shrimp tacos which were good although overpriced. The tacos came with elote which was awful (drowning in mayo sauce). My friend got the skillet dish and found her dish lukewarm in temperature. To top it off, the waiter did not mention that gratuity was included so I had to deduce that once I got my total. My friend tipped on top of that and probably tipped close to 30-40% without knowing despite the poor service. Positives: The coffees were nice. Corn bread appetizer was decent. Came here at the perfect time in the morning to grab my own table. It was a packed restaurant within 10 minutes of me sitting down. The restaurant is decorated very cute and very "insta-worthy" - my review is simply based on basic food ( I got chicken and waffles that were very average) and a host that ignored me (and multiple staff walking by clearly knowing I was waiting for a table) for about 5 minutes when I walked in. TLDR: All Instagram, no follow-through. The place looks the part. Very IG cute, very aesthetic, very "we'll fix it in post." But once you get past the vibe, there's not much substance holding it up. Food was, bluntly, basic and poorly executed. Dry pancakes. Burnt coffee. Burnt toast... somehow also served without butter. Potatoes tasted like those raw, undercooked bits you'd get in a school cafeteria. It genuinely didn't feel like a kitchen that cares about food. Service made it worse. Everyone around us seemed to be having a great experience, but ours was painfully slow and careless. We had to ask multiple times for simple things like cream, which never came. Order was wrong. We asked for no bacon, it came out with bacon, and instead of remaking it, they just took it off the top. That's not a fix, that's cutting corners. The overall attitude felt aloof. One of the owners noticed something was off, we mentioned the missing cream... nothing came of it. Either forgotten or just not taken seriously. That part felt like a lack of respect for the guest experience. To their credit, another manager or owner stepped in at the end, listened, and made an effort to make it right. That was appreciated. Overall: This place isn't about the food right now, and it shows. Great for photos, not for breakfast. If they shift focus to execution and service consistency, there's potential. Had an awesome experience at Sugar and Rye! I ordered the Mr. Brown Old Fashioned, it was super flavorful, and perfectly balanced. For food, I went with the Creole Shrimp Banh Mi and fries, and wow... absolutely delicious. The shrimp had great seasoning, the sandwich had just the right amount of heat (FRESH jalapeños), and the portion size was generous. The atmosphere and décor were incredible, stylish, warm, and welcoming without feeling overdone. You can tell they put a lot of thought into the vibe because it really adds to the whole experience. Especially the Christmas decor around the bar area. Between the great drinks, fantastic food, and excellent portion-to-price ratio, this place easily earns 5/5 stars from me. I was staying at The Oleander, and since it's owned by the same people, they recommended we check this place out. We went on a Sunday around 11 pm with a group of four and no reservation. Even though it was pretty packed, we got seated right away in the back room and had our drink orders taken immediately. We started with Bloody Marys, which came in the coolest tiki glasses garnished with olives, okra, pepper, and even a big thick slice of bacon. Honestly, one of the best Bloody Marys I've ever had. For my entree, I ordered the flounder skillet: a crispy fried piece of flounder on a bed of jalapeño cheddar grits with corn. So much flavor! The fish was perfectly crunchy on the outside, and the grits were creamy and rich. The portion was huge too! I've seen some mixed reviews about the service, but our experience was great. It's more about the ambiance than the food unfortunately. Everything was just too expensive for the low quality of food we received. Starting with the L'espirit mocktail which was $12. It was mostly sparkling water and came in a small glass which was disappointing. The creole shrimp bahn mi was fine, but again, for the price it was pretty expensive and honestly mid. The fries were good and the shrimp and vegetables were good but the bread it came with was slightly tough, like almost stale. Man this place checked all the boxes for me. The interior decorations/vibes- beautiful. Even the cutlery was gold. Salted caramel espresso martini- amazing. It came out extremely watery & with a much darker roux than what one normally expects from an etouffee. I thought that I had been served the gumbo by mistake. The interior blends cottage core with elements of island life so despite its elegant appearance, it doesn't feel like a breakaway from the downtown Galveston vibe. Their food is equally worth appreciating; in my experience, it's hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. Even the complimentary cheese and crackers tastes unique and savory. I like to keep brunch basic so the Smoking Skillet is my ideal main dish. For those that want to keep dinner simple, the S&R Burger tastes fantastic and contains a twist with brisket and short rib added in. Lastly, the Jambalaya Risotto offers a creamy mix of meats (chicken, sausage, and brisket) but watch out -- it might taste saltier than you prefer. I highly recommend the bread pudding for dessert. I'm not a major sweet fanatic, but I can appreciate a well-baked treat. Share it with a friend if you don't want to feel guilty about the calories. This restaurant isn't quite shirt and tie, but it's certainly a step up from its casual-dining neighbors. We were here visiting, first time timer. We were seated outside and that part is what I am basing my rating on. We sat under a tree, and things kept falling onto us or the table. Secondly, there was bird poop that dropped onto our table. Luckily it missed our foods and all but it was just gross. The service was great, friendly, was helped and served in a timely manner. Back in Galveston and always want to hit up my favorite restaurants with Sugar & Rye at the top of the list. The comfort food makes me feel at home when I'm on the island. The staff are always attentive and want to provide the best experience. The atmosphere is great too. Occasionally it can get quite busy but tonight is calm and relaxing atmosphere on Thursday evenings at 7 pm. Some nights there are piano players entertaining guests but it looks like they've taken the piano away to provide more seating. There is overflow seating behind the large bar. Outdoor seating is nice too when the weather is great. The menu has so many options to choose from that it is hard to find anything that is not tasty. Will be back again next time soon. read more

Sugar and Rye has been on my to-try list for sometime now, and glad Yelp reminded me to check them out. We wanted a quality brunch with proper cocktails and "a vibe," and Sugar and Rye was great. The plate-sized lemon blueberry pancakes were calling my name, but I instead opted for the wedge salad (sans bacon), since I've been on a wedge kick for the past few weeks. Beau got the chicken and sausage gumbo. Food was good; a few tables over from us, a gent was raving about the smokin' skillet: house-smoked brisket, corn maque choux, breakfast potatoes, sunny side egg, cotija cheese, and Mexican Crema. Based on all the Yelp photos, that seems to be a fan favorite. We were seated in a back room, and service was a bit slower than expected (even for island time). I kinda think we were forgotten about.
