If you are looking for an old world Italian restaurant this is the place for you. I've seen differing reviews on here and think if you order the right thing you'll enjoy your visit. We visited for a date night and even though it wasn't busy there were a few times I was without water and due to the layout of the restaurant and where we were seated we couldn't flag anyone down. For food, we avoided the pasta due to the reviews and ordered other items instead. The calamari was surprisingly good even though it looks frozen, it was cooked absolutely perfectly which is hard for calamari so I was very impressed. The porto salad was delicious, and reminded me of a supper club salad. The pizza (That's A Spicy) was the best part, as I love a crunchy and thin crust pizza and there were so many toppings. The tiramisu for dessert was also fantastic. Definitely a great date night spot. read more

Went here last night. We were visiting from South Carolina and make it a yearly visit to have dinner at Porta Bellas. We are a small picture of white sangria and two cokes. Three of us sorted the small Portabella salad and one of us sorted the Caesar salad. The salads are always great, especially the portobello salad with the buttermilk all dressing. It's a staple! Three of us ordered the Garibaldi sandwich. I ordered mine with jalapeños. We had another order with the hot banana peppers and the third order with no peppers at all. The bread was toasted perfectly along with the sesame seeds on top of the bread. Everyone loved Garibaldi. My granddaughter ordered the manicotti with a Alfredo sauce and a red sauce. The three of us took a bite of it and it was absolutely great. They also serve some nice French bread with butter. The atmosphere here is really nice and quaint. The service was excellent. Have to give it four stars. I look forward to coming back next year. It's too bad. They don't have the white house sandwich like Paissan 's used to have. read more

This is a Madison institution that has been around since I'm not even sure when. It was here and it was a date spot when I was in college in the 1980s. It still has that cute feel to it. The pasta is perfectly cooked. And the bartenders are students who were very pleasant to talk to. Service was amazing amazingly quick for a very busy night. Went for the first time with my wife last night. Sad that it's going to be closing in a couple weeks :-/ but glad we found it! Pretty cool when you walk in through the patio, really sets the vibe right off the bat. Got seated right away thanks to our reservation. Server was prompt (almost too prompt because we hadn't even really looked at the menu yet) so said he would come back. I started to get worried when it took him 20 mins to get back to us to see if we were ready. We placed our orders and got our glasses of wine almost immediately. We both got the PORTA salad and it was good. Not a life changing salad, but the homemade ranch is a nice touch. Calamari appetizer was good. Not rubbery, although I prefer a chili dipping sauce to the tomato dipping sauce. Can tell the tomato sauce is made fresh though with lots of garlic, tomato, onions, and herbs. She got lobster rav and I got the short rib rav. Clean tasting fresh made pasta. I wish the short rib flavor was more pronounced cuz the sauce really kind of dominates, but the sauce was good. It also said Chianti braised and I didn't taste that. I didn't get to try the lobster ravioli because "JOEY DOESNT SHARE FOOD!" (IYKYK haha). We both finished our plates. Kitchen was backed up on bread so we didn't get that until halfway through the entreé and the butter was still rock hard and not spreadable (not room temp) so that was kinda meh but not enough to make me hate the place. Tiramisu for dessert was good, not life changing. All in all, the service was good, the vibe was great especially for a date, and the food was good. When I got there a half our later the pizza was ready and the girl at the counter said waiting on the sandwich. 10 mins. later the sandwich came out and I waited another 10mins and I asked her is that my sandwich sitting there. She looked at it and then she decided to make my greek salad. I watched her when she grabbed the lettuce threw it in the tray then grabbed all the other ingredients. Ate at PB the other night, and was like: Ya. Nothing outlandish like in the some of the other reviews, but nothing 'great' either. The food was Ok, could've been better. The service was good & attentive (server did a good job), ambiance was [as has been said elsewhere]- dated. I read in another reviews that "...Fazoli's (or Olive Garden) has better food." This place has a lot of atmosphere. Be prepared for a dark, romantic slightly gothic/deco setting with many cozy booths. It's right off campus and has an excellent outside dining area. The food is very good. They start you out with warm bread and olive oil for dipping. This also include butter in the basket in case you don't want to dip your bread in oil. My husband had a cup of the soup du jour which was tomato Florentine. It was very good with a rich tomato broth and included Italian sausage and pasta. You cannot dine here without ordering the porta salad. They are known for it. A small salad is large enough to share. The salad consists of Romaine lettuce topped with a blend of ham, salami, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, fresh green peppers, and garbanzo beans They are famous for the Garibaldi sandwich. French loaf topped with layers of ham, salami, pepperjack cheese, sliced tomatoes, and your choice of green or hot banana peppers (or both). You can also have it made on their spicy cheese bread. This is how my husband ordered it with both hot and sweet peppers. He gave it five stars but said he liked it the original way a little better -- traditionalist. I ordered the super hot pizza -Pepperoni, yellow onions, spicy cheese, hot banana peppers and added Italian sausage and sliced tomatoes. Excellent as always. Looking forward to having leftovers for breakfast. We were there during Christmas break when all the student are gone so our waiter was one of the owners. Very gracious and excellent service, of course. We chatted a bit and remarked that we will miss their sister restaurant Paisans which closed due structural problems in their building. He shared that they intend to remodel the basement of Porta Bella for a new home for Paisans. It was a really good lunch and I recommend this place for its pizza, sandwiches and pasta. What an amazing old school restaurant in the heart of the State Street area. It was here when I was in school in the 70's and the food continues to amaze. Service was great and the food is like I remember in my collegiate days. It never disappoints. Sad that their sister restaurant Paisans closed down town. It was a favorite of mine for pizza and the porta salad. I had the lasagna this visit with a nice Italian wine. It was wonderful. My friends and I ordered carry-out, since we knew the restaurant would be busy on a Saturday night. I placed my order online separately from them, and it only included a small pizza and an order of bolognese. Soon a text arrived, saying the food would be ready in a few minutes - 5:18 pm to be exact. When I arrived at the restaurant, they were busy, and they told me the order had just been put in. So I waited. And waited. And waited. When I asked about my order, the greeter was apologetic and went to check in the kitchen several times. But every time they would come back, they would just say the kitchen was behind, with no real explanation for why a small order would take so long. After a full hour had passed from the original 5:18 estimate, they brought my food out, but the pizza was completely wrong. She showed me a shrimp pizza with banana peppers - not what I wanted! - and admitted that it had been sitting in the back for a while. Finally, after another fairly lengthy wait, they brought my food out. By then it was nearly 90 minutes after the originally estimated time. The food was OK, but definitely not worth the wait. My friend had asked for no mushrooms in his bolognese, and that request was ignored. My chicken pesto pizza was better, but I'd choose something different, if I were to go back. I really wanted to love this place. There are elements to this restaurant that deserves to be a place to enjoy but unfortunately the food didn't live up to its charming facade. The whole look and feel of this restaurant made me feel like I was transcended to a nostalgic time of an era that's no longer here. My friends and I were excited to try this place but it's the food that made us sad for this restaurant. Sam was our waitress, she was pleasant and gave us pretty good service. I think it's the chefs cooking our food who may need the help. The bread basket was ok, in the bottom of the basket had pats of butter in wrappers to use. Suggestion: perhaps but real butter in ceramic portion cups at temp would be better. Our pasta dishes came out Luke warm, almost cold. The cheese garnish on my raviolis didn't melt because the sauce wasn't hot enough. My friends dish was the same, she made me try it see be sure. So we asked that our dish be brought back to be heated. My friend suggested they remake her lasagne and Alfredo dish again. My dish came back a little more better heated and shortly after my friend received her dish. Mine food was ok, I could tell the raviolis weren't fresh. The meat inside was mushy. My friends dish came back remade but still cold. She put her finger in the sauce and was disappointed on how this happened twice in a row. Also, while picking through the lasagna, we all discovered that there wasn't any lasagne noodles in the dish at all. My friend decided she couldn't eat her dish and had it sent back. The only thing we all liked was our small house salad. When we get the check, we discovered that our waitress Sam, had charged us for every soda refills. We checked the menu and it doesn't say that refills are charged. So we asked for the manager and even he didn't know and had to asked a more tenured coworker to find out. We were reimbursed for the extra charge for the refills but when we left, I relooked at the receipt and found that they charged a "non cash fee" of $2.79 I feel like this place can level up their food and create a more polished dining experience if they stopped doing premade food and stopped creating unnecessary charges to nickel and dime their customers. Hasn't changed for more than 40 years - and that is good...and less good Porta Bella (and it's less formal cousin, Paisan's - now closed) are/were Madison institutions since Madison was a lot less cosmopolitan (when ChiChi's was mexican fine dining and Supper Clubs were still a thing). And 40 plus years ago, Porta Bella was pretty adventurous stuff. Now it's not. The good - still the best Pizza in Madison. Thin, shatteringly crisp edges, great tasting dough, the best italian sausage. Great french bread basket. The Porta Salad. How I love thee. And the spicy cheese bread on sesame crusted bread, no longer from the colonial bakery (RIP), now from Clausen's? My God, how good Staff - still nice, booths still very clubby and semi private. Place is clean and still well kept. To dang cold for the patio to be open, but it is a nice patio So why is this not five stars? Because the rest of the menu is still in the 70's Baked Alfredo in all it's creamy goodness. So comforting, so olive garden. Now PB's version is better, but it is still in the 70's. Chicken Marsala. Great. From the 60's. Most of the menu (all of the menu?) is recipes from more than 40 years ago. What was great in the 70's just doesn't make it any more. There is way to much competition that did not exist then. Either you engage and grab the future, or you get run over. Anniversary dinner, went with wife and daughter at 7:30 on a Sunday night [Porta Bella is open until 9pm Sunday nights]. Food was great, server was great. Stuffed mushrooms, calamari, porta salads, creamy bacon pasta with chicken, shrimp scampi... So far a five star rating, right? Well, at 8:30pm the dishwasher starts trolling the place in his soiled dishwasher outfit, with a gray bus tub. Comes over to the table and starts clearing it. We HAD finished dinner, and were just finishing our drinks, but still. Getting the rush from the dishwasher really left a bad finish/taste on an otherwise enjoyable special dinner. I would not recommend this restaurant for a special dinner, they just don't seem to give a ... I would also not recommend going within two hours of closing, they just don't seem to give a ... you probably shouldn't go on a Sunday night, they just don't seem to give a ... So sad because Porta Bella is a Madison institution that I've gone to with my wife since she was just my girlfriend 40 years ago. So sad because when customers start making a list of when NOT to go to a restaurant, we know where the place is in the life-cycle of a restaurant. $200 worth of drinks, appetizers, dinners - even at a fraction of that bill, a customer should get a bit more. read more

The best part of Porta Bella restaurant is their outdoor patio and their famous Porta salad. I love their enclosed patio in front of the restaurant. It makes you feel like you're dining in Italy! I appreciate that they have nice plants and decor in the patio. And that most, if not all tables have optional sun umbrellas. We started with a Calamari Strips appetizer. It was a generous portion and came with their marinara sauce on the side, but the texture for us was a little off. The texture did not keep us from eating most the dish, as we were famished. Most dishes come with either a salad or soup. My husband tried the chicken dumpling soup, and just thought it was so-so. But it was a creamy based soup which was unexpected. I thoroughly enjoyed my Porta Bello salad: fresh lettuce mixed with crumbled cheese and salami. I recommend getting their house Italian salad dressing for this salad. My husband had the chicken parmesan entree. He felt it wasn't the best he's ever had, just ok. My Vegetarian Pesto pizza was a bit disappointing. I think it's because I just had a very tasty Porta salad and then when I tried my pizza it was just not as flavorful. A few years ago, I ordered a special sausage dish. I didn't ask the price beforehand. The dish was very bland and waaaaay overpriced. So much so that I thought they double charged me. This place has a beautiful courtyard, but sadly that's really the only thing positive to say about this restaurant. To start off in the bar, the taps were down and they were out of several bottled beer. The bartender was frustrated and you could tell. The awful tasting wine came in a filthy glass which because it's very dark in there (which I usually love), I didn't notice until we got outside to sit. The courtyard is nice, but it needs a thorough cleaning and removal of random junk. I tried another wine with another dirty glass. Our food arrived and we ordered: Mantova's Bolognese - A regional recipe from Mantova, Italy, Madison's sister city. A thick marinara sauce of Italian sausage, beef, bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes and onions served over penne. Steak Alfredo - Slices of tenderloin tossed in Alfredo sauce, and topped with toasted almonds, and four Italian cheeses. Served over fettuccine. Oven baked. The bolognese was in no way an authentic Italian recipe from Italy! It was filled with hamburger meat and looked like it sat for a while, watery sauce under the overcooked noodles. The steak dishes "steak" looked grey and was definitely not fresh. There were no toasted almonds and again the pasta was overcooked. They did have a tasty French blue dressing that we got on the porto salad, which was good. I appreciate the history of this place and what I think they're going for, but I can only assume COVID and just not changing with the times has greatly affected the success of this restaurant. There are great Italian restaurants in Madison to dine at instead; Osteria Papavero, Bar Corallini, Lombardino's, and if you're looking for one that isn't pricey, Nonno's is good! read more

Absolutely disgusting all-around. Burned out lightbulbs, vacant tables still piled with plates and decor that hasn't been updated . . . ever . . . was the first indicator we should leave, but we were nostalgic for the Porta Bella of the 90s and thought our kids would like the throwback experience. After a long wait, our waitress delivered warm, ice-less water and raced around like a maniac, shouting things like "It's Food Time," which was alarming in the low-lit, quiet atmosphere. When our meals finally arrived, the waitress accidentally dropped two entrees on the floor, which happens, but the way it was handled was completely inappropriate -- no visit from a manager and no real apology, just a crazy "I don't know what happened" from our waitress. And we were still charged full-price. As for the food, we had 9 people in our party and the only decent entree was the cheese pizza. The bolognese looked like dog food smothered in tomato sauce, the lasagna was just a heap of cheese and sauce (oops, they forgot the noodles) and even the meatball & chicken parm subs were somehow disgusting (how do you mess that up???) and the white wine sauce was Alfredo. The presentation of the food was also sick -- sauce smudges all over the sides of the plates and the waitress used a stack of napkins to carry the hot plate and left the stack of sauce saturated napkins on the table. Did I mention the waitresses hair was long and hanging in the food as she served us? I don't know how this place would pass a health inspection and there's clearly no one in charge. I'm sad to say they either need new management (or even just a manager!) or it's time to close the doors. There are too many great options to waste your time and money here. read more

This place is such a conundrum. Beautiful old school restaurant. So much charm and classic, romantic ambiance. Yet they just clearly don't care at all about the food. And it's really really overpriced! You can tell a restaurant doesn't care when they serve salads with dressing in pre-packaged plastic containers. They serve bread with little prepackaged plastic bulk-bought butter packs. Its a crazy amount of plastic waste and It's like eating in a cafeteria. Except a simple bowl of pasta is like $27!!! I'm sorry to say it but no one should ever go to this restaurant. It should be boycotted so that the owners are forced to either give a shit or sell it to someone else who will. read more

This restaurant was highly recommended by our hotel shuttle driver since my co-worker and I were jonesing for Italian cuisine all day. We were so glad we came here! When we got there, we were seated right away though the host asked us if we had a reservation. I only had Starbucks coffee all day, because I wanted to save my appetite for dinner! We ordered fried calamari and garlic bread which came with savory, delicious hardy marinara sauce which was so to our liking. My co-worker ordered chicken Marsala and I ordered Shrimp and Scallop with tomato Vodka sauce(they came with linguine pasta). Our meals came with soup or salad and we chose salad. They were so delicious! My co-worker loved his chicken Marsala and I loved my Shrimp and Scallops! Everything was so good and our server, Grace was very friendly and attentive. We had Tiramisu to go since we had no room for dessert and we had the appetizers to go as well. Great pizza, the outdoor courtyard is nice, the rest of the food is Italian-American straight out of the 70s (boo). The decor is also out of the 70s (fun) The way management is about money though... is downright hostile. We made a reservation for 6 and they wanted a credit card number because apparently they charge you 50 bucks for cancelations. The last time we went they added a 3.5% processing fee if you pay with a credit card so we tried to pay with a check. No, no checks. OK fine we managed to scrape together enough cash to pay but they are not at all upfront about their payment policies. Dad was so pissed he would have stiffed the waitress if cooler heads hadn't prevailed I wouldn't ever go but my fuck a spicy sausage pizza with spicy cheese is probably my favorite slice in the city read more

We headed in for lunch and it was very hot outside. We wanted to sit inside. We were brought into the very back of the restaurant in the rose room. This restaurant is very old fashioned Italian decorations, drapes around/above table, old music playing, and many different rooms. We were fanning ourselves off and the waitress made a comment about the heat and it was very hot in the room. No air or the air was not low enough to feel cooler than outside. We all were ready to order right away so we put that in. Someone asked for spaghetti and meatballs which was on the menu but they only had fettuccini noodles. Someone asked for basil on their pizza and they didn't have basil. Spaghetti noodles and basil seems pretty basic for Italian menus so that's strange. I got the spicy meatball sandwich and fries. We got a bread basket to start which came with a garlic flavored olive oil which was delicious. Our food came out and one person's lunch was missing and the waitress asked what he had ordered again. She went to check and came back and said "she didn't know what happened but put the order in." She offered complimentary soup or salad while he waited but he declined. The meatball sandwich was pretty good. I split it with my BF and it was plenty. It was extremely cheesy and the bread was buttery and garlicky so be prepared for that. We all finished our food before the missing lunch came which took longer than we would've liked. All and all - it was okay. It maybe better for dinner. read more

Owner refused to make accommodations for my 81 year old father when he called. With a nod to nostalgia, I decided on Portabella for my restaurant week choice this year! A bit nervous given the reviews, and the last time I had been here many years ago it had seemed run down. I maintain that I need to get here during the summer months because the courtyard is darling! The bread was warm, soft, and just what I needed and our server was happy to give a refill when our party of three destroyed the first basket! I ordered the chicken Parmesan. I tried two different red wines; Pinot Noir was a special and the house Cabernet. Neither was an outstanding choice and were both on the mildly expensive side for a glass of house wine at $13. I can't ever seem to turn away from chicken Parmesan at an Italian restaurant so that was my dinner choice; friends both had the lobster ravioli and enjoyed it! The chicken Parmesan was unremarkable - lacking the ham that was in the description though a green pepper ring had been added to the sauce. The porta salad could have actually used more lettuce/greens as a mouthful of cheese does get to be a little much over and over again in a salad, but I certainly see the appeal of this well known starter. I finished my meal with tiramisu which was delicate and flavorful. Presentation is generally lacking - sauce spills/wipe marks on the plates, my dish felt generally doused in sauce, wine spills on the glass, etc. and I agree with another review that commented on how odd it was that plates were delivered with a stack of napkins as a potholder and then left on the table for us to use. That said our server was friendly and prompt and it was overall a pleasant experience. Reminded me of cafeteria lunch when I was in middle school. From the cheap dish ware to the reheated food. Noodles were hard as a rock on the outer edge of the plate. I had the Pasta in vodka sauce with steak for $30 and it was trash. $14 sampler appetizer had 4 mushrooms and 4 fried ravioli straight that seemed straight out of the Sysco box... for a $120 meal ($93 plus the tip) for 2 it's safe to say I'll never be back. read more

Very different interior decor as compared to most places in the university area, kind of a retro 1910 vibe. Great food and excellent service. Portions were also on the large size. One of our entrees came out incorrect and when we asked them to fix it all the kid did was offer to take some money off of our bill when all we wanted was the dish made correctly. We took advantage of the Restaurant Week specials to have lunch at a place I had not been to in decades - not since I was a student. We made a reservation but it was not needed nor did they appear to have it. We were seated in the old world/ old school dark and "romantic" room with its overstuffed banquettes. You don't see too many places like this anymore. The special Restaurant Week menu had a few choices for the $15. We both opted for the Porta salad which was good but falling out the small bowl. The warm bread and hot oil were a nice touch. My wife ordered the manicotti which was just "fine" - the sauce not that flavorful. I was living in the past and had their Garibaldi sandwich which was as good as I remembered it. For the dessert course we both got the tiramisu which was very good. Little coffee flavor which was a plus. The service was inconsistent considering it really wasn't that busy at lunch on a Monday. I had my mothers 65th birthday in the private party room and it was phenomenal. Staff was attentive and helpful. We had our own waitress that also was able to get our drinks from the bar that was in the party room. The food was incredible and hasn't changed in decades. I came here for the first time in my teens and loved it then and now I'm in my 40s and still LOVE it. My family absolutely loved the venue and couldn't have been more please. If you have gluten free and dairy free needs, go elsewhere. One of the only things I could order on the menu with a gluten and dairy allergy was a gf pizza with goat cheese (luckily I can have that). The menu is confusing and I got the bill for a whopping $36 for a 12 inch gf pizza with only 3 toppings. Then they add a 3% credit card fee to your check without any mention of it in your receipt. I was shocked it cost so much (because what I added up that I thought I ordered was more in the $25 range). I guess it was all the fine print and catch 22's I missed in the menu coupled with the waitress not clarifying with me what she thought I was ordering. Then a manager came over to help me understand the bill and was fairly rude about it. I felt duped and like all the fine print in the menu was shady. Not worth it. read more
