The flavor was fine and service was great, but I've never been so insulted by food before. We've been to Portara before and enjoyed it, though we know we need to be careful of unexpected dairy on the menu. Nice atmosphere and just off Pearland Pkwy so easy to get to, and we had a pretty nice/helpful waitress to boot. The recipes were generally fine enough, though wouldn't recommend the lentil soup (very odd flavor for a Greek place). BUT. You may have left the restaurant a little hungry before - maybe you were especially famished walking in, or shared a little too much with your family. But have you ever ordered a side of potatoes and gotten...three slices (and a nub, thrown in as an afterthought)? I guess this is for the discerning customer who wanted the side, but not really? Thanks for making that discerning choice for me! Or maybe for someone that wanted that child-sized taster portion of potatoes. Oh but wait! For 5 bucks, you TOO can get "8 oz" of spuds in all its starchy glory. It's a shame - the fry job is done well. But given the midget handful of greens on the Opa bowl, I guess the economy is rough on all of us. Seriously guys, I don't think it used to be this bad guys. Outstanding!! If there was one word to explain it. It's outstanding! I have been twice in a 10 day period. I'm obsessed. The quality is amazing. So many authentic dishes that you could just tell were made with fresh ingredients and made with love, and not crap off some Sysco food truck. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming and clean. The servers are knowledgeable and provide great attention to customer service. We will be back again and again. Here is what I reccomend so far: Greek salad with Honey Harissa Chicken, the tzatziki and the baba ganoush, the kebab dinner, the fried cheese, the spanakopita and the pita is delicious too. I've got to go back and try one of the bowls and the lamb burger... Don't let the unsuspecting outside of the building fool you. Step inside and be happy! read more

Cute little restaurant. We started with the hummus and the dolmas. The dolmas were delicious. I didn't like the hummus at all-it wasn't smooth, it was very thick, and had too much cumin in it. We split the honey harissa chicken plate with French fries. I don't think the fries were homemade like Niko Nikos. I got tzatziki and garlic sauce to dip the fries in. Neither were good, especially the garlic sauce, it tasted tangy. The chicken was good, but not good enough to come back. I almost forgot, we got spanakopita and it was really good, seasoned well. We got baklava and rice pudding to go... rice pudding was nothing special (I threw it away) and I've had much better baklava. Our waitress wasn't very attentive, a waiter had to come over to our table to check on us-wish we could have given him the tip. I even dropped a knife, he heard it, and came over with new silverware. He's an awesome server! Overall though, we were underwhelmed. We won't be back unless we are in the area and we will get some dolmas and spanikopita to go. I love Mediterranean food and it's hard to find really good ones. This place did not disappoint. I just happened to drive by and see it and decided to give it a try. I got the dip trio and tried the chipotle hummus, regular hummus and tzatziki. They were are really good, the chipotle was my favorite. I also got the moussaka croquettes and they were really good as well. I think a tad of became would've made them perfect. Needless to say I am excited to have found this place because it is close to home. Service was very quick and very friendly. We had a wide variety of offerings from the menu, and we loved everything. We picked a bottle of red wine blindly. It was a Greek wine that paired wonderfully with the food. I was so excited to see Greek food in Pearland. I come from a city where there's a large Greek community and great Tavernas to frequent. I've been to Greece and I cook Greek food. This was not it! I ordered the musaka and spanakopita. With all due respect, there was no béchamel in the musaka. There was no seasoning in the meat. It was layers of not so tender eggplant with bland meat and a huge wad of mozzarella. The worst musaka I've ever had. You gotta go back to the drawing board on that dish. The spanakopita was just below average. Somebody Greek at your restaurant is not tasting the food because if they were, the food would be better. Your star rating is very misleading. In about 90 days you could fix these dishes and give your restaurant another try. Also, you need to throw some delicious crusty Greek bread in your orders too. read more

We dropped in after a long day. We were greeted warmly with great smiles. The restaurant was clean and bright. Comfortable. The menu has a variety without being overwhelming. They also have a few thing that others don't-like octopus . The dolmas, spanakopita and Baba Ganoush was wonderful. The gyro lamb pita was yummy! And they have wine at very reasonable prices. We got there 30 minutes before closing and they treated us well. We never felt rushed to leave, even after they were officially closed. Lots of parking and easy access to main streets. What a hidden gem! I was in town with two coworkers for one night and we came here based off good Yelp reviews. It was a Monday night, which is historically slow, so there was only one other table in the small restaurant. The space is small but clean. The menu has a good variety and prices are good. We ordered the hummus for the table as an app, along with an extra side of pita bread. For dinner, I ordered the octopus dinner (comes with grilled veggies and lemon potatoes) and subbed the potatoes for a side salad. My coworkers each ordered gyros and subbed the fries for side salads. The food came out quickly and was delicious!!! We all really enjoyed our meals. The side salad was a small Greek salad and was excellent. I even had a really good portion of octopus. I ordered the Classic Portata Bowl with Souvlaki chicken and Tzatziki as my side sauce. Upon opening, I was confused as to why the Tzatziki was just plastered on the side. It made the salad soggy, it was not necessary to do this. The chicken was cooked well, minimal seasoning. The rice, which appeared to be white rice, was mushy and seemed to be undercooked. Pretty disappointed as I have a love of Mediterranean foods. Please ask guests if they prefer a drizzle of sauce or if they'd like it on the side, don't just plaster two to three spoonfuls of sauce on-top of a bed of lettuce. The service when I went to pick up my order was great and the gentleman was very kind and helped me to my car with all the food. Very appreciative of that. Overall it was just a lack of freshness and skimpy portions. The cucumber from the veggies for the hummus was transparent, due to sitting in its own juice for a long period of time. Barely any fries with any of the meals. The hummus reminded every one of refried beans...I think maybe too much cumin. I tried lots of things for take out. I'll start from the top: Greek salad was good. Could have used more feta. The baba ghanouch was DELICIOUS! Pita bread was sad. The lemon chicken soup was not much different than canned chicken and rice soup. It needed more lemon, pepper, and egg. It tasted okay for what it was. Was only warm, though. The falafel could have been great but it was undercooked and mushy. I put a few in my air fryer and those were really good. The accompanying sauce was watery and not enough to go around. The beef skewers were very tasty. The chicken skewers were overcooked and dried out, not edible. The waiter was a doll and the place was bright and clean! All in all, the chef can fix this place by tasting his food and introducing some quality control. I really love Mediterranean food and am rooting for Portara to get great. read more

This time we ordered to go and I was so impressed with the quality of their to go food. Everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious. It's very rare that a restaurant's to go food taste as great as eating at the establishment. If you haven't tried this place I definitely recommend. The beef tenderloin is still my favorite. The cod texture was great but could use a little bit more flavor. I did not mind the lack of flavor because it was cooked so perfectly and no fishy taste. The cheesecake was definitely something different. In my opinion I would prefer just baklava alone not with the cheesecake. I'm excited to go back and try it. read more

Today was our second time dining at Portara. Last visit we ordered takeout...dolmas, tabbouleh, chicken gyro pita, gyro pita, & fries. Pita, tzatziki, and veggies were all fresh. Fries were tasty. Overall for takeout everything was fresh, hot, and good. Today we ordered the Saganaki...was really tasty! Tea was good, ordered both sweet and unsweetened. We ordered the grilled chicken pita & Buffalo chicken pita with tabbouleh side & side salad (house Greek dressing was amazing!). We had to order dessert and share...ordered the rice pudding (super light and fluffy and not too sweet) and Baklava with ice cream. It was really good, fluffy, crispy...cinnamon was just right. Ambiance was simple and quaint, music was easy mellow paired with Greek ambiance. We will probably be frequent flyers here...at least once a week! read more
