First time at Portillo's and this Chicago hot dog institution earned the hype. My coworkers here said if I liked this, they've had better, but Portillo's set the bar high enough that I doubt it. Something about being in Chicago and taking hot dogs this seriously just hits different. I went three times to work through the menu properly. The jumbo hot dog might be the best hot dog I've ever had. Everything came together: the sport peppers, the snap of the dog itself, and a poppy seed bun I'd never had on a hot dog before. It just worked. The chili dog was a letdown by comparison. The hot dog itself tasted flat and boring under the chili, which is a shame after how good the jumbo was. The cheeseburger is underrated. Good char, really tasty, and the Comeback sauce pulled it all together. I got the fries too, which were pretty good dipped in the Comeback sauce, though nothing to really write home about. Shakes were a mixed bag. The chocolate shake was excellent. I actually meant to order a regular Dr Pepper shake, but ended up with the Dr Pepper cake shake by mistake. Too many flavors and textures fighting each other in one cup, not for me. Heads up if you order shakes here: the large size is genuinely large. Still, this is my go-to spot in Chicago now. Portillo's in Northbrook is a classic example of an authentic American success story. Walking in, you cannot help but appreciate the history on the walls. The photos from the 1960s, showing the owners then and now, give the place a deep sense of tradition and pride in building something from the ground up. The memorabilia throughout the restaurant is fantastic, and there is plenty of space if you are coming in with a large group. The food lives up to the reputation. The Chicago dog is fantastic and fully authentic, loaded with the right peppers, onion, and pickle. The only minor bump was that we ordered to dine in, but the order came out in to-go packaging. Wrapped up like that, the steam got to the bun and softened it a bit more than if it had been served open on a tray, which took a little away from the texture. Even with that, it was still a very good dog. For the side, ordering the fries well-done on the self-service kiosk is a huge plus. They came out crisp and tasty, though in the fast-casual fry hierarchy, Culver's still holds the crown. Overall, it is a great spot with rich local heritage, generous seating, and solid staple items. As first timers, my family and I tried a variety of things based on what they were known for but wish we could go back and order differently. One of my teens and young adult ordered the Italian beef, said it was kinda dry and you had to pay extra for the toppings. I had the grilled chicken and house salad, no complaints. The chicken breast was flavorful and juicy!! My other teen had the fried chicken sandwich and my husband had the fish, they said it was pretty good. The restaurant was really nice! Very colorful decor! Didn't have much interaction with the staff because we ordered at a kiosk but the young lady announcing the order numbers for pick-up made up cute little rhymes based on the number. For dessert, the young adult tried the lemon cake milkshake, he loved it and was impressed that they incorporated the cake chunks! One of my teens and I shared the strawberry shortcake, it was tasty but had more whipped topping than cake. We'd definitely go back and try other things on our next visit to Chicago. read more

Stopped by Portillo's today and had a great experience! The service was fast, and the lady calling out the order numbers had us laughing the whole time--she made the visit so fun. I came here for the first time (to this location, not the franchise itself) this summer while on a day trip in the area. I love the retro vibes inside (70s I think?) . The bus structure was a sight to marvel at and overall it felt so lively. There was even a group of ladies playing what I believe was either Canasta or Mahjong. The food was excellent and was right on par with all the classic Portillo's flavors we know and love . The service was quick, and it was pretty clean from what I can remember. I stopped by because I had a gift card for a "free sandwich". The person in the drive thru let me know with full certainty that sandwich meant anything. First time in a portillos while in IL (we have them at home in AZ) and it was enjoyable! I usually get a chili cheese dog but this time I did the right thing and go the Italian beef with both peppers. The dipped bread was nice and not overly wet and the meat was really good and not too fatty either. The peppers could have been smaller for the sweet and the hot was a little on the hot side for me but still good in one bite. I went to the Portillo's Deerfield to claim my birthday piece of cake. As a Portillo's Perk member I get a free piece of their legendary chocolate cake on my birthday. I was able to get in, pick up my cake, and get out quickly. There was no line. I love how each Portillo's has their own unique decorations that center around a common style. I love Portillo's but today's visit fell a little short. The hotdog didn't have that special snap that it usually does and the flavor wasn't right. Also, the crinkle fries were hot and crisp, but the texture was a little overdone. Nevertheless, my friends split a #1 Italian beef big combo and they enjoyed themselves. Our lunchtime visit had a pretty big crowd, but the Portillo's staff cheerfully and efficiently keep things moving along. Ordered a chocolate cake online. Went to the location, which had ample parking. The carryout area is right in the front, clearly labelled. Inside the restaurant it is pretty dark. Since everything was super easy, on time, I was literally in and out of there in 2 minutes. And the chocolate cake is always a win. I never understood why Portillo's is so slow in getting the orders out - you would think the large number of staff they hire would make everything more efficient. They all look so 'busy' behind the counter, but nothing is being prepped and orders are just not going out. We came here for lunch, and we ordered a charbroiled cheeseburger with all the fixings besides mustard, a Spicy Chicken Sandwich (comes with lettuce, tomatoes, and giardiniera sauce, in between a brioche bun) , and large fries. The fries were actually fresh and hot, which hardly happens! Both the sandwiches, however, were at room temperature, which doesn't make sense either. Note that even if you request your sandwiches to be sliced in half, the staff does such a poor job, as it's not cut appropriately or completely. The space is large and plenty of sectioned off eating areas. And the salads and bread are good And they have Portillo's gift cards buy $100 and you get 20 you have to make sure to use it after Christmas sometime by March for the bonus cards . Ordered the hot dog with cheese fries and the lemon cake shake and a jar of hot gardinera to take back to Georgia. Hot Dogs have a snap when you bite into them. Love it. Only neon green relish, tomatoes, onions, sport peppers and mustard for a real Chicago dog on a poppy seed bun. Crinkle cut fries with a thick cheese sauce. They used to be better before they sold the company...However, they still are great! The hot dogs have great snap. The burgers are my hands down favorite item on their menu. The Italian beef is great too with many dipping options (if you have to ask, then forget this item). And practically everything else is good too. I am a fan of their cake shake (cake in a shake? Yes, please). And their cheese fries? Yum. I always suggest specific burger places to go or great Italian beef places to go (Buona does it better, sorry), but if your group is looking for a little of everything, you simply can't go wrong with Portillo's. I ordered a Biggy Beef which I always do with sweet peppers and mozzarella cheese plus a chopped salad and to my surprise the Biggy Beef was extremely small and I mean it should of been called a Smally Beef nowhere what Im used to from other Portillo's locations!!!! I grew up in Chicago but moved away, so in Denver there are very few places to get a good Italian beef sandwich. I do hope they expand and make out to us. A lot of people complaining about change in ownership, menu cuts and the such. Who cares I say, the food was as good as I remember it to be. I came twice in two days I was so excited to see them. The place was clean, the service was very good and the food was exceptional. The Italian beef for around $10 bucks was awesome, with plenty of meat! Very juicy and wet. Yum!! Fries, the crinkle kind, onion rings, thin and crispy, the hot dog had an awesome snap to it. The place is huge and by the number of customers, people still seem to enjoy it. I have to admit I don't have all the history and am ignorant of the difference between this place as a family owned versus an equity owned business. Feels like people that know are more upset about this change than anything. I asked at the Hotel where they would go for a Chicago experience they were unanimous in Portillos. Off we went Again the shuttle driver said don't go to the drive through. Go inside. Went in and had a great experience. Talked with a Grand mom at the order station. She said no question on the cheese and beef with sweet peppers. I got the full meal deal. Fries and a drink. Again I listened to and watched as the drive through took longer. Hot dog boiled not fried. Ketchup on the side. Fries cheese sauce with jalapenos only five. I mean I get it people want what they want. This is supposed to be quick drive through. Half lettuce tomatoes on the side no mayo pickles on the side sorry all these things and wacky request slow up the process. I digress. My beef and cheese was stuffed into the roll. Juicy and cheesy. There was only one sweet pepper kind of on top as an after thought. The fries were half full. Taste was out of this world. Little price high. Maybe 4 stars is high but it's 3.5 to 4 for me on taste flavor and presentation. Service was great for me in and out in less than ten minutes.
