Was in Chicago for a family event and we went to this Portillos one night for dinner. They took all 15 of us and let us push a lot of chairs together so we could all fit and sit together. Food came out really fast, it took about 10 minutes maybe even a little less for the food to come out for all of us. The food was delicious! Portillos is one of our family's favorite restaurants. The decor is so cool, it has a 1920-30 vibe and they play music that fits that time period. Only downside is that it is really loud inside, especially when it's crowded, and it can be hard to hear when they are announcing your number so make sure to pay attention!! I ordered the chopped salad with garlic vinaigrette dressings. Which they offer as an option on the Deerfield ordering page. Of course, when I got there, they didn't have that dressing. They only had house and Italian. Same thing to me. The worker said that "we get asked for all different dressings all the time but this location doesn't stock it". Well, if customers are asking for dressings (especially if the salad description says it comes with a particular dressing) MAYBE you should stock it then! This location is notorious for not having items that literally every other location does. Portillo's is a staple of my meal planning, as in we default to this on nights I refuse to plan something for dinner. My husband always orders the big beef with giardiniera. It's a massive sandwich stuffed with Italian beef and he likes the extra heat that the spicy pickled vegetables adds. I vary my order more often, rotating between the classic Chicago hot dog, an Italian beef with sweet peppers, or the charbroiled chicken sandwich. On occasion, we'll add an order of cheese fries - crinkle cut fries with a side cup of cheese sauce, nothing fancy - and about once every three years or so we'll get a cake shake just for the experience. The food isn't going to change your life but it's reliable, which is sometimes more than we can say about the person who plans meals in this house. We've had mostly good service (though we almost always stick to the drive-through). I did dine-in last week with a co-worker and had a good experience, too, with a friendly cashier. They weren't using the microphone or speaker to call orders so you might want to stick close to the counter if that's the case. read more

He went to take a look at our order just to come back and say they need to remake the whole order with no explanation or any compensation for making us wait 40 minutes. Have been to many Portillo's locations and theres something special about this location with all the decorations and the giant bus room they have, it's definitely unique and you wont find it else where. One thing that I heard at this Portillo's was the number calling and rhyming which sparked joy in my ears because its been so long from other Portillo's that I've heard them do that Had a double cheeseburger with fries for lunch with the coworkers. The bad: the fries weren't hot (maybe because no one else was there), the onion rings on my rodeo burger were so hard and old I thought I would break my teeth. Overall just an ok visit. The food is always good here. I like their chopped salads! It was a bit of a zoo when I went last, without much crowd control. What was really odd was the loud PA system to announce orders. I have been here before when it is a normal volume, and people can hear when their order is called. It was extremely loud this time around. I was told by a Youtube video that the "cake shake" is an absolute must try when in the Chicago area. I was intrigued by the idea of an entire slice of cake mixed into a milkshake and I am here to report that it is exactly what you think it would taste like. At first slurp, I was surprised to find that I was slurping literal chunks of cake. I only had a few more sips before I had to call it a night. To be honest, it was just a little too heavy and sweet for me and left my stomach feeling unsettled. But this was not a drink, it was a meal. More than that, it was an experience. The second thing you notice are the atomic stars that adorn the outside rim of the building. You gotta love all the detail inside with its vintage signs and little what nots and Knick knacks from an era long past. This one has a beautifully built bus with a flower power theme inside! The staff at this location are what you'd expect to find in a Portillo's, fast, efficient and hard working. Let's not forget super friendly! This is an ok portillos location. They are a bit slow, but I haven't had any issues. The food has been good. I usually order and Italian beef which is great and fries and cheese sauce which is good too. Can't really get a much better italian beef than here. I was very impressed with the drive thru process at Portillo's during Covid. They had an employee put a sticky note with a number on your car and then they took your order and you paid right there. Once you drive around to the other side of the building is when you got the food. It was quick, safe and a smooth process. My only complaint was that the hot dog was a little soggy, like it had been wrapped up with the pickle for too long before giving it to the customer. The fries, as always, hit the spot! read more

Well let's start out with us showing up at 10:20 am and the front doors are still locked. I had to call the store because the employees cleaning the lobby were ignoring us knocking on the front doors. After that ordered our food which was a reasonable wait but after I bit into my hot dog and could not bite through the skin on the first one, I thought maybe they gave me a garden dog by mistake. So I put that dog to the side and took a bite of my second one and sure enough the same thing, uneatable in my terms. You bit the dog and the meat rolls out of the skin. I went up to the counter with both dogs and receipt in hand where I waited almost 5 minutes before anyone address me. When I asked for a manager she walked away and then back to see what I needed. I told her the dogs taste like shit and she ended up being all offended telling me after waiting to be taken care of for five minutes as she looked over at me several times. Mariam is the person who helped me and was so rude. Portillo's you have lost my business at this Deerfield establishment. If I could give a negative star I would. Every Portillo's deserves 4 stars or higher - they manage the big influx of people at noon. They handle the drive thru crowds, the long lines, the people at the counter - they are a well oiled machine. The decor - a slice of Americana, what's not to like? Also, I've never ever been disappointed at any Portillo's (same thing with In N Out). I have my favorite items - the cheese burger, the hot dogs, the onion rings or fries with cheese. Finally, thee (yes, thee) chocolate cake. Those are all of my favorite items and they can go toe to toe with the other chains or non-chains (minus Hot Doug's and other specialty hot dog places). We were driving down from Wisconsin to Missouri but had to have our Portillo's fix! At noon we pulled into drivethru with only one person ahead of us. We ordered a bunch of stuff- 6 of us eating. Our food was ready within ten minutes, was hot and accurate. We had Italian beef, hamburgers, milk shakes, charbroil chicken sandwich and a Caesar salad. The food was very tasty and we all enjoyed it! Reading some reviews I was surprised at the complaints but our experience was perfect. Friendly staff and quick service. This particular Portillo's is the WORST. My husband and I come here often and every single time our order is handed to us wrong, whether we are in the drive through or go inside to order. Today we ordered inside and not one other person was ordering food or waiting for food in the entire restaurant except us. After waiting 20 minutes for two salads and two cheese fries, the order still comes out wrong. No cheese sauce, ingredients missing on salad. We will not be coming here anymore. Incompetent workers who don't take pride in their work, let alone pay attention. If the restaurant is empty, there should be no excuse an order comes out incorrect. Very pleased with the drive through. I went at a non-peak time, so the line wasn't crazy bad. There were a few cars in front of me, but they shuffled through fast. The peppermint vanilla shake was a bit thick though and hard to drink through a straw. Seemed thicker than the chocolate cake shake. Maybe just not enough milk added this time? Portillo's is notable for three things in my opinion. 1. Their food is delicious. Everything on their menu is top notch, high quality, and tasty. I particularly like their burgers and chicken sandwiches. Their hot dogs are also excellent, and their fries are crispy and flavorful. Their italian beef sandwiches are a specialty. You can even order them as either "fast packs" (which come with premade sandwiches, with all the messier fixings on the side, to throw together multiple sandwiches at home or out and about), or "take and make" where you get all the cold supplies that you can heat up and make at home. We've had every variation, and they're all excellent. They also make excellent salads, sandwiches, and of course, milkshakes. 2. Their interiors. From carved out school buses, to kitchy advertising signs to Haight Ashbury Summer of Love concert posters (for some reason. I'm really not sure how this all ties together with italian beef and hot dogs but it's still cool). 3. Their ultra slow service. The lag between the time you order to the time your food gets called for you to come pick up is always ALWAYS too damn long. I can order three plain hot dogs with fries and it'll take 15 + minutes, and I can't see the reason for it. The one thing they really shouldn't do is have an open kitchen where you can watch the lag in real time while you wait. As a former fast food employee, and wannabe problem solver, I get so frustrated watching, say, one guy run the fry station. Drop the fries in the oil bath, stand around while fries cook, wait until alarm sounds, retrieve the fries, put the fries in bags, repeat. At least fill up the cups of free water. Or clean. Or help out. It makes me so nuts to see, especially when I'm starving and they're doing goofy rhymes to tell you your order is ready, like: "59, your dinner's fine" or 231, it's time for fun." It's like a little insult. And trust me, as someone who's been standing and waiting, watching other stand-and-wait'ers, no one is digging the funny rhymes. We're all hungry and a bit agitated at the long wait. That said, they do have cold beer on tap you can order while you wait, and that comes faster. One last minor annoyance, they split up the kitchen into two sections. Two areas where, if one kid wants a portobello sandwich and the other wants a salad or pasta, you have to then stand in TWO different lines to order. It makes no sense. There will be people just milling around waiting for anyone to decide to get a salad (awesome salads by the way), then you order it, and one of them makes it, while over on the burger side, there's 20 people running into each other (or standing around waiting for fries to finish cooking). Like I said, you stand around long enough, waiting for your order, you start getting unnecessarily picky about things. All told, Portillo's is awesome for food but I wouldn't risk the line and slow service on my lunch hour. Go there when you've got a lot of time on your hands and you'll be fine. read more
