We picked up 2 slices of their chocolate cake to have after dinner. WORST piece of cake ever. We knew the Portillo family had sold the business several years before to a big corporation and the lack of quality was obvious. Cake was dry, the frosting was lumpy and tasted musty. My husband had tried the strawberry shortcake a few weeks before and it had it's own shortfalls. Save your money and stay away from Portillos-you can do better elsewhere. read more

I used to live near this location for 14 years until I moved back east. Yeah I miss my friends, but Portillo's never let me down! It's classic Chicago and I need one in North Carolina! Being that I had a 90 minute drive north ahead of me, I ordered 2 hot dogs from the drive in. They were ready in less than 3 minutes and they came out perfect. Bun was steamed just right. Crisp pickles, onions chopped to the right size. Proper amount of mustard and relish, fresh tomatoes. Little celery salt to bring it together. Even though I like spice, I'm jut not into the sport peppers on the dog. AND NO KETCHUP EVER! Their lemonade is not the best by any stretch though, it is just too sour (yes I know lemons are sour). Honestly I think this is one of those places that is more nostalgia more than anything else because the beef doesn't really have any flavor and even if you get it dipped still has no flavor, the hotdogs are, well just basic Chicago dogs. Pretty disappointed in this location lately. Every time I order anything other than chicken tenders, something goes wrong with my order and I rarely ask for any customizations. The most recent issue was finding a hair inside the bun of my fish sandwich. I've also noticed that staff members don't wear hairnets, which is concerning for food safety. What a ripoff. A group of us went there after a concert expecting their generous and flavorful sandwiches. But no. Their traditional grilled chicken sandwich is now tiny and not very appetizing. A colleague had their Italian beef on croissant and reported it was super small and disappointing in taste. Bad customer service, expensive food, lots of other options in the area...why bother with Portillo's? They screwed up an order on Wednesday--ordered the two hot dogs with everything + ketchup; well, the picture speaks for itself. The following Thursday, placed a $70+ order (not hard to do--their food is pricey) and they forgot to add the cheese fries. When we contacted them, they gave us a $5 voucher. The problem is, cheese fries are more than $5. So we lost money on that deal. Friends kept telling me that Beef Shack and Buona Beef are better alternatives, and they aren't wrong. Went to Portillo's in Geneva, IL for lunch today. What I encountered was far from the anticipated treat, as I am finishing my drink I take the lid off to eat the ice and see an added ingredient--a bug, amidst the ice cubes-I'd been eating! When I called the store and spoke to a manager I was surprised by their response as it fell short of acknowledging the severity of the matter. They inquired about what type of bug it was, offered an apology and to replace my drink. When I advised I was in the next town over they offered a refund for the cost of the drink and my dessert. When I mentioned I thought the matter warranted a full refund of my entire meal they said they were only refunding the drink and dessert. My ENTIRE meal was tainted by this experience. Albeit an accident, this experience casts a shadow over an otherwise enjoyable visit and shows a lack of concern for the customer experience and raises doubts about the establishment's commitment to food safety standards. I hope the management recognizes the gravity of such incidents and takes proactive steps to prevent their recurrence. read more

I ordered 2 half slabs of ribs, a large fry and a small onion ring to go. I also had a birthday coupon for a piece of cake. The guy at the register didn't know how to ring in the coupon so he called his manager to do it. She was not very friendly. It takes about twenty minutes for the ribs, so I sat at a table and waited. That's when I noticed none of the women nor the two men were wearing hair nets. Most of the women and both men had long hair. I thought this would have been against sanitation regulations, so I asked one of the women about it. She said they didn't have to wear any kind of hair nets or hats. Today we had a delicious lunch at Portillo's on Main Street in St. Charles, Illinois. Aside from the delicious food, most notable was the employees sense of humor at the pick up window, putting a smile on everyone's face. As the numbers were called out, a rhyme came with the number, "127, you are going to heaven; 128, don't be late.... In addition, another employee came to our table to see if there's was anything we needed. It was such a pleasant atmosphere with the smiling employees going the extra mile. The dining room was very spacious, clean, and well-maintained. Portillo's also has an interesting decor which is fun to browse. We enjoyed a Greek Salad, which was plenty big enough for two meals, the Broiled Chicken Sandwich, and the Plant-based Hotdog which tasted, absolutely delicious! I had not heard of Portillo's Hot Dogs until my husband brought me back to Elmhurst to meet more of the family. For 40 years, Portillo's has been a "must have" when we are in IL. This a multi generational favorite. In 1995, family moved to St. Charles. For the past five years, we have been driving 1,000 miles one way, back to St. Charles sometimes twice a year, to eat at Portillo's twice during a stay. Oh and of course, to visit family. Our first visit to Portillo's in St. Charles this trip, May 9, my husband and I had hot dogs. I was sorely tempted to try the Lemon cake. I was thinking how dry it might be so I resisted. Our second visit was Portillo's in Elgin. I was disappointed. It was loud. We were a big bunch, 10 of us. My hot dogs didn't have the usual flavor. The atmosphere was lacking, kind of cold. Our third visit, Portillo's in St. Charles, I got a hot dog and my husband got Italian Beef. They didn't have lemon cake but they had chocolate cake. I got a piece. My hot dog didn't have the flavor I have become accustomed to. I was going to get lemonade but the dispenser was empty as well as the tea dispensers. This place is still popping! Portillos is still packed and the drive thru is still overwhelmingly packed like the good old days before everything hit. Thankfully, there's tons of parking in the open lot next door if you prefer to dine in. The lines move fast to order your food and the workers move like a well oiled machine at pumping out orders. The interior of the store is beautiful with all the aesthetics that Portillos is known for.... And all the pictures of Dick Portillo with local known people. I like this Portillo's because is very nice and clean. Not to crowded. The service is great and the food is delicious. I do miss the fact they took out the sale of the ribs on Mondays. I am the only person in my family that really lives barbecue ribs. I never got to go on Monday for that special. Today is Portillo's 55th birthday so I had to go get a slice of chocolate cakes for 55 cents the only catch was to buy an food entry not another dessert with the chocolate cake. Change for the worse. We went for dinner last night and they have changed for the worse. Portions are much smaller. When I got my Italian beef and saw it in the wrapper at first I thought they messed up and gave me a hot dog. The bread for the Italian beef was substandard. The buns on the chicken sandwiches were tiny. There appeared to be less meat for both the beef and the chicken. The beef seemed to have less flavor than usual. I felt like I went to the grocery store and grabbed something from the deli. It feels like Portillo's is now just a fast food joint. Also, you are channeled through the line so that you have to pass by the souvenirs on your way to the register. It feels like someone bought the business and said "maximize profits at the expense of the customer." I'll probably just spend more $$$ at Buena Beef. read more
