I finally made it and was able to try Portillo's. The restaurant is almost always busy and there's a good crowd there inside and out. The restaurant is decorated in the theme of some old Timey cars and like a mechanic shop. We placed our order at the counter and the food was ready pretty quickly. We tried the Chicago style hotdog dogs, the roast beef sandwich, and a cake shake. I got the sweet and hot peppers on the roast beef sandwich and that was delicious and I would definitely go back to try that again. I'm a regular at Portillo's whenever I go back home to the Chicago area, so I was excited there is one outside of Atlanta and took a drive out there when I was visiting. Unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. The hotdog bun was half fresh and half stale, not sure how that is possible! And the French fries also did not taste fresh and were warm not hot. The space, however, was well designed and nice place to spend some time eating. Large parking lot too. Portillo's is pretty consistent, so it was a bummer to drive 40 minutes for a subpar meal. Tried this place for the first time since we were in the area and to be honest I can't see what the hype is about. Full transparency though we didn't try what they are famous for. My son had the chicken tenders and I had the bacon double cheeseburger with onion rings. My favorite onion rings are from Whataburger, these could not compare. We both did try the cheese sauce with the fries and it wasn't our cup of tea. We loved the comeback sauce and would def go back for a slice of chocolate cake! I got us a very good booth w cushioned banquet seats. Score! @Sean got in line and placed our order for us. $41. 2 dogs, 1 Italian beef, 1 Fry w lots of ketchup. And a Chopped Salad w Chicken. Two drinks. There was a bit of a wait. We watched lots of bad behavior. One family came in and pushed five 2 seater tables together and they all sat down. Even took chairs from other tables. I thought that was very rude. We do have to come back soon. We missed some favorites like a Cake Shake. The baked goods are extremely excellent. Never been here before so we really didn't know what this restaurant's specialty was. The drive through was long so that was an indication to me that the food was probably good. There was an employee outside taking orders, so I guess that is what helped the line move at a steady pace. I ordered chicken tenders, onion rings, and a fruit punch. The food was just ok. Nothing really stood out. If I visit again, I would order what they are known for like their hotdogs, sausage dogs, or Italian beef. This place is good. It's really good. However, it's very very very popular right now because it's so new. Be prepared to struggle to find parking and to wait a fairly long time if you dine in for your food. Nevertheless, I'm glad we finally had a chance to try Portillo's in Kennesaw. Having friends from Chicago, they all spoke so highly of Portillo's and said that I had to try the Italian beef sandwich. The sandwich did not disappoint. I ordered my sandwich dipped, which I think must be the best way to get it because it's so moist and the meat is so tender. Going back next time I would probably add cheese. I would also consider getting the cheese sauce for the fries. I did not try one of the beef hotdogs this time, which is clearly Chicago style based upon the mustard, relish, chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, and a kosher pickle, and peppers, all inside of a steamed poppyseed bun. The interior is very colorful with lots of classic signage covering the walls. The person calling out the order numbers clearly loves his job as he rhymes the numbers with a catchy phrase. Not that I'm an expert or anything and not to date myself but I ate at Dick Portillo's first location ( in the Chicago burbs) and now at his 100th location here in Kennesaw GA. Note: after many years and successful openings and a long prosperous career Dick recently sold his life long business to a conglomerate. As you might suspect when Portillo's has a new opening, the traffic was a nightmare. Cars out the parking lot, down the side street on to the main street up the exit ramp and down the highway. There must be a lot of Chicago Transplants here in Georgia. Lol. So I waited a few weeks for the initial surge to wear off. And already it had over 90 reviews. You can tell Portillio's will be a big hit in Georgia as they are already planning 4 more restaurants in Georgia in the next year. Most everything is exactly the same as it was back in the day except for the Combo (Italian Beef and Italian Sausage) my favorite. Seems like the new corporation is shaving on the amount of beef they use. The sausage is still tasty and you have to get the sweet and hot peppers to go with it to experience the full flavor. Either on the sandwich or on the side Some of my other favorites are the Chili Dog w/cheese and onions. The Chicago Dog (with everything of course) and the Maxwell Street Polish . What can I say... I have Chicago in my system and crave that food all the time. I found out they opened this location up in November and that I was going to be in the area so I had to check it out! The food is exactly like it is in its original state. They very steadily had a long line, but it wasn't because no one was being served, it was just that busy! The food was being served and the tables quickly cleaned as people left. The restaurant was nice and big with all the typical decor, but Georgia coded. There was a nice outdoor seating area, which I will admit, I am not sure I have seen in IL. Ha There was also a rare things for a Portillo's.... A drive thru! Stopped on our way south. Conveniently located off of 75-inconvenient parking with much of it blocked off and a strange entrance area for drive-thru. There is a sizable outdoor dining area and I love that once inside, you can order from humans or electronic kiosks. The bathrooms were clean (albeit with scalding hot water which was tough for my kiddos). The seating area was smaller than anticipated, especially if you have more than 2 or 4 people in your group. We needed to wait for a table and a worker came over immediately to wipe down the table before we sat down. Another worker came over with paper sailor-esque hats for our kids. We waited only 10 minutes or so for our fresh food, consisting of: -cheeseburger -double cheeseburger -hamburger -Caesar salad -Italian beef with cheddar, dipped -large fries with cheese sauce The fries are the star. Crisp, hot crinkle fries with the perfect amount of salt. I normally love Portillo's Italian beef sandwiches (I'm from Illinois) but this one was not it. The beef didn't have much flavor, one side of the roll was soaked in gravy and the other side was dry, hard, and stale. Bummer. My boys all loved their burgers, which are thick patties with a smoky, char-grilled taste. My daughter ordered the Caesar salad, which I do not recommend. Very overpriced for some lettuce with cheese on it and one hard boiled egg cut in half. Portillo & the playoffs, what better combination to cheer on my bandwagon Chicago Bears team (I'm was on the bandwagon for clarification :-) and truly represent my love of the city of Chicago? There has to be a better experience, and there is per my previous review on this specific type of food from another Cobb county restaurant. Not my first experience, as had food from Portillo in metro Chicago a couple years ago. Was not impressed then, but peer pressure, their Chicago origin and desire to give second chances swayed my decision. Several in my group placed orders through a friend who lived in vicinity. Totally get that it was the playoff weekend, and surely a busy restaurant so allowed a bit of grace. The orders were typed out and shouldn't have been confusing, but despite that one was still left off and a return trip was necessary by our designated pickup person! Also it was not easy to find a local website as the state of Georgia was not even listed as having locations. I deferred to the Chicago location. I had previously visited and ordered the number one fan meal. It was the Italian beef with sweet peppers and opted for mozzarella cheese, large fries, and something called custom sauce. It looked fairly appetizing and I wanted to give a full review of the product offerings. Despite paying extra for the larger size Italian beef what I received was quite small, and can only imagine the regular size! The meat had decent flavor and I did truly enjoy the fries as they reheated well in the air fryer. I had ordered gravy on the side to dip, and it was good as well - not overly salty. Never received the custom sauce which my friend was told was included, despite having its own cost on the website. Whether I was charged for it, I will never know. My combo came with a drink, and I selected the root beer, and it was pretty standard. My biggest concern was the over hype of the restaurant as I've had better Chicago Italian beef. I do realize it's a chain and things get diluted, but I may have been swayed by too many seasons of The Bear ;-). There was one amongst my group who was adamant that this was the best outside of her own makings. Everyone of course, is entitled to their own opinions, but as a connoisseur of food, this fell short. Think Cookout but with a Chicago heritage and this is Portillos I've only heard of this place but now that I know it's in Kennesaw, I had to make a stop since I was in Woodstock so the drive wasn't that much of a biggie. So it's a fast sit down joint that sits roughly 120 people and they serve fast food but with roots in Chicago. It's literally order and pick it up and enjoy so there isn't much service but because it's relatively new, it's poppin up in there. Now for the food. Because it's rooted out of Chicago, I had to go with some staples. The Chicago dog The Chili cheese dog The italian beef sandwich Let me preface this by say that the hot dogs have a nice snap to the tube shaped meat. It's obviously not fire cooked or fried but even still, a nice snap to it as you bite into it. So the Chicago dog is definitely a nod to its namesake. Relish, peppers, tomatoes, a pickle spear, and seasoned with celery salt stuffed into a poppy seed bun. Now the flavor is rather minimal since they don't put enough celery salt on the dog which is what carries the whole thing but you know, it's based here in the ATL area so I can't fault them TOO much for leaving out the staple ingredient. The dog is rather watery though. The relish, pickles, and the peppers all mix together and you bite into the meat tube but then your mouth is filled with this liquid and yet the bun isn't soggy which was cool but it wasn't a pleasant mouth feel even though it had some flavor to it, the Chicago dog at Portillo wasn't the best experience to try. The Chili cheese dog. This came wrapped in paper and well, the cheese wasn't the nacho cheese sauce but some government cheese stuffed under the glizzy and then a drizzle of flavorless bean filled chili. Wasn't too impressed with it. The Italian beef. I don't know what it was with the kiosk but it didn't default to what we know Italian beef should be. A soggy au jus laden sandwich with spicy peppers generously topped on the hoagie. The meat is tender as can be but bland. The peppers didn't add much other than a slight spice kick but that's it. I did like the sandwich itself but overall, it's mediocre. I get that this is essentially a fast food joint and so I can't really fault them for the experience but there are some things that should be staple and to diversify the menu will not be a good thing to do. Stick to what is working but rest assured, ramp up the flavors a bit before serving because blandness in the South is just unconstitutional. read more

Finally made the trip from Henry County and it did not disappoint. It was definitely worth the drive. The restaurant is nicely decorated, as are all Portillo locations, the Customer Service was exceptional, and though it was super busy, they got us in and out expeditiously! Over 1hr drive to get to this new location of PORTILLOS! We were shopping in the area so why not! No long crazy lines but the police had the entrance parking blocked off. You have to make a U-turn to enter and go to the drive thru or park at a nearby parking area! I just opted for the drive thru. It was fast about 7min I had my food! I was looking for tamales/ribs/pasta which are items at other locations I saw on menus online! This Portillo's doesn't offer those items, maybe later! We really enjoyed the food we ordered. There will be a location opening in Gwinnett and that's when I will enjoy portillos again cause that drive will be a good 10min away then! read more

We had to make the drive out to the first Portillo's in Georgia and y'all, it did not miss! It was spacious inside and the parking lot. One of my fav Chicago eats! So glad we got one. Some of the favs: -Chicago Dog- with all the toppings. It's a must. -Italian beef- with both sweet and spicy peppers and a side of the gravy sauce or on the Italian Beef sandwich. We ordered the combo to share -- two Chicago dogs, onion rings, and a drink. We decided to stop because the line was long and the place looked packed, which is usually a good sign! The drive-thru staff was very friendly and helpful with ordering, and don't let the long line scare you -- it actually moves pretty quickly. The dogs were really good. I am a Chicago native so this was a much anticipated opening. I knew it would be crowded on the first week but we went for lunch anyway today. The restaurant is where the old On The Border restaurant use to be right off the highway so you can't miss it. When we arrived the parked lot was full and the line out the door. Since there was no parking we went through the drive thru which was packed. I was impressed how fast we got through the line. We all got the Italian beef sandwiches with onion rings. I was invited to a Sneak Peak event before the grand opening next week and invited my wife to join me. I had fond memories of Portillo's hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches from 30 years ago when I used to travel to Chicago and my wife had never been to any of their locations. I was excited to learn of this new location being built but was fearful of my expectations being too high. I opted for the Italian beef and sausage combo with a side of fries and cheese sauce. My wife got the normal Italian beef. We were not disappointed as it was even better than I remember! Everything was prepared hot and fresh. Just the right amount of gravy on my sandwich with both sweet and hot peppers. It was delicious. The location has been rebuilt from the ground up and it was beautiful inside. The only negative was the service as it took around 15 minutes to get our food but we did not mind as this was the sneak peek with their workers getting ramped up before grand opening. I have no doubt they will work it out. It was well worth the wait. We finished off with a delicious slice of fresh chocolate cake. Portillo's was so busy! Since the line to order was super long, we opted for the kiosk. It was user friendly and easy to use. The restaurant was clean. We found a table relatively quickly. Since they call your number and you retrieve your own food, interaction with an employee is slim to none. But they walked around emptying garbage, wiping tables, etc. The presentation of the food was unremarkable. The char-broiled chicken sandwich was flat with an excessively oily bun. My daughter eats chicken on the regular and she didn't like it until she ditched the bun. My regular dog (A la Chicago style) looked small but it was so filling I couldn't finish it. It was also the most authentic chicago dog I've had since living in the midwest! The fries were typical from frozen but served plentiful and hot. The onion rings were the perfect onion to batter ratio. The best part was my husband's Italian Beef sandwich. It looked pathetic, sad really. No cheese or peppers. Customer service has been pretty inconsistent at this location. I've always enjoyed Portillo's when I've visited locations in Chicago and Phoenix, so this experience was disappointing. This was my third visit, and I went through the drive-thru. The intercom appeared to be down, so there was an employee outside taking orders. She was friendly, but the interaction felt rushed. Customers shouldn't be expected to know their order immediately, especially when they're still looking at the menu. Unfortunately, the experience at the pickup window was even more disappointing. The employee at the second window (I believe she had red hair) came across as unfriendly and uninterested. There was no greeting, smile, or basic customer service, and the way my order was handed to me felt abrupt and dismissive. Overall, she seemed annoyed that customers were there. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and works on improving the customer experience, particularly around how employees interact with and communicate with guests. It's unfortunate because Portillo's is a great brand with food I've enjoyed in the past. However, based on my experiences at this location, I don't plan on returning. If you're looking for a great cheesesteak, I'd recommend Woody's CheeseSteaks, which has locations in both Atlanta and Downtown Marietta. For fast food with consistently friendly service, Culver's is another solid option. The staff have always been welcoming, and the food is reliably good. read more

I got the hot dog with fries and a chocolate cake shake. The hot dogs were extremely chewy which was very off putting. The taste was fine but the texture was not my favorite. As far as the fries, they were fine. But for a $10 meal, I don't recommend. On the other hand, the chocolate cake shake was delicious. The flavor wasn't as rich as I would have liked it to be but you could clearly taste the cake chunks. I also got it in the regular size which was bigger than I expected. I could only drink half of it before my stomach began to hurt. The service was also mediocre. The staff members were all very kind but it took forever to get my food. I ordered at the kiosk and I must have waited 10-20 minutes. That may not sound like a long time but for a fast food joint it's pretty long. The burger and Italian steak sandwich were very good. The hot dog was so so. Strawberry /Lemon and chocolate cake shakes were good, very rich. Three combo meals with shakes was $54. Too expensive for what you got. We ordered at the kiosk. Waited 15 minutes no order? Then asked, somehow the order got lost. Restaurant was crowded clean. Staff were friendly.
