As a Chicago transplant was super excited to see that Portillo had come to Madison's west side. But the passion for getting you good food in a timely and efficient manner is lost at this particular Portillo's location. This is why this location frequently is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS busy than other fast food joints in the same area (eg Chick Fil A, Starbucks, Culver's, etc). If you're going to this particular Portillo's you always need to plan for a minimum of 15 mins at the drive thru?!! If you have any modifications to your order, expect to wait longer. On top of this (as others have stated) need to check your bag at the end bc 50/50 chance of it being correct. It's a shame as I'd love to see this location succeed, but at the rate it's going I would not be surprised if they closed down in a couple of years (bc not profitable). read more

Portillo's at West Towne has the Chicago chain classics you want, but temper your expectations. The interior here is plain compared to the Chicago locations and more limited than the original Madison spot at East Towne. Wait times are all over the place, and you have to check your bag before leaving with drive-thru or carryout because there's a 50/50 chance your order will be right. I have received a chili cheese dog missing chili. And another where I don't think the dog had been cooked at all. Overall, its a spot for when you crave the food, but plan for unpredictability. read more

Very tasty hotdogs!!! Unfortunately, it took forever to get our food and most of the staff seemed distracted doing other things other than getting food pushed out. Regardless, the food itself was amazing and the restaurant was clean. It's a fun environment and I really enjoyed all the great things hanging up in the restaurant. Great food very disinterested service. Went to this location the other night around 7 pm. I was the only one in line , I was ignored at first then when the young woman addressed me , it wax simply "are you ready". No greeting , no welcome, no smile. It strikes me off as they make these this big show of rhyming when your order is ready , which feels dumb and forced. Maybe they should focus on the basics of customer service and make that a focus . I had dinner from here on a Saturday evening. The place was spacious. There was not a lot of crowd. Seems there was more take out orders than dine in. Spicy chicken sandwich was my favorite item. It was crispy and had nice flavor. The seasonal drink strawberry lemon cake shake was excellent. Chocolate cake shake was ok. Italian beef and chilli cheese hot dogs were my other dinner items and were good. Fries came with a side of their cheese sause. I loved ketchup with fries than the cheese sauce though. read more

I've only been here at weird, non-peak times. I'm always pleasantly surprised by how good their burgers are. The milkshakes are so thick you have to eat them with a spoon! It's a little on the pricey side for what is essentially fast food though. It also really annoys me that they have two pumps for ketchup but only have the paper cups on one side. read more

Our family loves Portillo's! They have become a weekly staple on soccer practice nights. Quick, easy and delicious! I truly think their fries are my favorite - crispy and salty, they are perfect! I usually get the chili cheese dog, because the flavors are incredible, but recently tried the chopped salad. Sooo good! I love the pasta in there, makes it a filling meal. My kids love the hot dogs and burgers, and my husband is a big fan of the Polish sausage. The staff is friendly and efficient, and we're super glad there is a local Portillo's! read more

Today's visit reminded me of why. Pulled up and the drive thru isn't mechanical. Human came out to take to my order. He put in what he wanted because at the pick-up window they recalled my order before handing it off. Not saying char grilled. So, I asked "Is it char grilled?" Her: huh?! Me: Is it grilled? Her: I don't think so. Let me ask. She returns to say it'll be 7min. Is that okay? For the love of all things ... I wish they'd update the website to have charred as an option or modification. As of now, I wait. I do believe I'll stick with Costco or Chicago and let any hope go of receiving solid service at either Madison location. It's unfortunate given this was an issue before COVID and folks were saying they were having a hard time finding staff. read more

I'm from Illinois and have been familiar with Portillos for my entire adult life. They are great people and do a great job with their business. I'm a vegetarian that eats chicken and thus cannot comment on their Italian beef or hot dogs... until recently when they added a veggie based hot dog to their menu! It was nice to be able to order something other than a salad (although they have great salads). I got a veggie dog and fries and was pleasantly surprised as to all the toppings it came with. The food was delicious and ordering was fast. We got our food to go, but it appears the inside is nice with some outside seating as well. Great location next to west town mall. Definitely worth checking it out if you haven't been. If you're it calorie concerned, try the chocolate cake shake as well! read more

They are brand new right now, but there was a little bit of trash and food on the floor when I was there at night. The staff got to it all quickly. I was fortunate to be able to participate in the sneak peek at the West Towne Portillo's 11/22/21. The order taker person was super friendly and even was happy to be out in the cold! She said she missed talking with customers. Our food order was completely correct. And we enjoyed everything immensely. We've been to Portillo's before and our favorite is the Italian Beef sandwich. This is the #1 must try item on their menu! We also enjoyed two hot dogs one plain and one Chicago style, small fry with cheese sauce, a side salad and they even threw in a piece of chocolate cake. We ordered from here using Door Dash during our last trip to Madison. We ordered an Italian Beef & Sausage Combo with Hot Peppers, an Italian Beef with Sweet Peppers, Onion Rings, Fries, a Chocolate Shake and a Strawberry Shake. Everything was amazing! The beef was tender, juicy and flavorful. The sausage was one of the best I've ever had. The fries and onion rings were still hot and crispy, even after delivery. The shakes were thick, rich and nowhere near as melted as we thought they'd be. If we ever get a chance to patronize a Portillo's again, we definitely will. read more

YO! This VERY UNDER RATED PLACE serves up some awesome quick foods. We had the salad, whitefish sandwich, big Italian beef sandwich and of course fries. HOLEY MOLEY!! the beef was a grand slam. A French bread roll gave a crispy delivery and the beef? MOMMA MIA! over the top delicious. Not the ordinary bland stuff. The seasoning was incredible and made the meal. The fish sandwich was certainly above any other fast food out there. The chop salad was good but the house dressing gave it a tasty finish. The fries were CRISP! so disappointed in the service at this Portillos. we waited 16 minutes for drive thru hot beef sandwich. I ordered at kiosk, then the lady came to the window to apologize they lost my order. strangely enough they knew how much to charge me. then a very nice young man came to the window and said they were working on the order, that it was shift change time (5:00pm) and the order was lost. he offered me a piece of cake as a consolation prize. lastly the fries were barely cooked. not good Portillos, not good. read more

Tasty food but I probably won't order the croissant again as the croissant isn't that flaky. Got a sneak peak of the new Portillos! Great ordering system with friendly staff. The food was great, definitely up there for a fast food place. The beef sandwich was stuffed with meat and the spicy peppers weren't too spicy which I enjoyed. The side salad was a lot larger than I was expecting (a nice surprise) and the house dressing was tasty. The iced tea is unsweetened, just a heads up. My partner said the chicken tenders and fries were really good as well. Looks like a great addition to the west side of Madison. Go and check em out! read more

Having lived in Chicago, Portillo's is a staple. I have been to many and every time it has been an enjoyable experience. Traveling, Portillo's is available in many different cities and I have always made the effort to try it. Arizona, Peoria Illinois wherever, it is a consistent brand with delicious food. When my family moved to the Madison area, we needed to go to the east side of the city to have Portillo's and it was delicious as always. We were so excited when soon after they announced they were building a west side location. The west side Portillo's is not a Portillo's. It is a strange carbon copy of what a Portillo's should be. It is as if someone typed in parameters into an AI computer and it spit out THIS version. It has the same inside and menu of a Portillo's but it is far inferior. Horrible workers who seem puzzled by the most basic request. "I want a hot dog with melted cheese on it". They look at me as if I just spoke some ancient Sumerian language that only scholars can interpret. And don't get me started on their Italian beef sandwich. Ask for it dipped and they look confused and bewildered, yet when you explain what dipped means in its most basic form, you still get just an Italian beef with no au jus. I am sure there is little chance this review will change the dynamic of this location, but honestly they should remove everything existing about this place and start fresh. Retrain the staff, or just have them watch a video about how a Portillo's in any other location actually works, and I am sure it will improve. read more

Everything on the menu is very tasty. The "Chicago Dog" provides a savory combination flavors, textures, aromas which explode in mouth. Italian beef sandwich can be ordered "dipped" or "dry." I opened the wrapper to find a not even lukewarm chili dog smashed, with chili all over the inside of the wrapper and cheese not even melted as you can see the square shape of the cheese slice in the pic. A casing so thick on a hotdog it was like biting through a rubber hose. I took one taste, took a picture to yelp it, and threw it in the trash. Why are the ones in Chicago so much better? The workers at the Madison West location also looked unhappy. I've had more than this one bad experience at this Portillos. I had a not so good dinner from Madison's Portillo West so I let customer service know. They gave me a free meal to reimburse me but it expired before I had a chance to use it. But THEN a few months later, I got a really nice email saying they had missed my mother's birtday but they were giving us two free cake slices AND a meal as I hadn't used the first one.
