I have ordered in the past with good results but definitely not this time! The sandwiches were cold not hot, sauce which was ordered on the side was on the sandwich, the extra pickles were not included and the way the bread was sliced on mine was 90% top which made it very difficult to eat. The two worst things ...the person making the sandwiches was picking her teeth with gloves on when I walked in and after submitting my one star review as requested by their email and I requested contact they have ghosted me, no response or contact! I have tried sandwiches from 3 or perhaps four different restaurants in this chain, and they are always at lengthy intervals. I think once, in Sun Prairie, I had a good experience. But I'm not sure, since I have skipped countless opportunities to visit any of them for years at a time. Today, I opted to see if this might be the one to change my opinion. First off, it was not particularly busy. One guy who was waiting, presumably for his order, when I walked in. A young boy, probably 13-14 took my order and I couldn't understand a word he said, at least not easily. Which in itself wasn't a problem, though I didn't know if the pickle was actually part of the sandwich I was ordering or if it would be a side. (It was a side, upcharge, I understood later when I was at home and eating my sandwich) I paid and went back to the other end of the counter to look at the menu and the selection of hot sauces while I figured I'd have a 2-3 minute wait. Meanwhile I read the ingredients on all 10 or so sauces, and during this time the guy who was ahead of me was still standing there where he had been when I entered. Nearly 10 minutes before. Soon another guy came in, said he was so and so, someone answered, stating it was nearly ready. A second passed, and he's handed a bag that might've contained 2 sandwiches, judging by the size. Dude number one is still patiently waiting, practically like a statue, I was realizing as I was getting impatient. Approaching the 15 minute mark I am thinking, and finally he is awarded whatever he was waiting for. Wow. I guess they baked his bread for him. Another customer arrived, their order is already set up for pickup, so she grabs it and is on her way. Three workers, plus this middle school student, who is now, sitting on his backside, staring into a cellphone. Like all kids and adults spend a majority of their waking hours doing. Finally. My sandwich is ready. I am certain I had to have been there for very close to 20 minutes. Three adults, put out 5-6 sandwiches in the amount of time I was inside this place. I'll skip to the part where I wish I was reporting that my sandwich was kick ass. But I can't do that. It wasn't terrible. It was mediocre I'd say. The flashback to that essentially terrible bread that was what made me recollect the previous times I have had a firehouse sub, they aren't bad, but they certainly aren't great. It (the bread) has a soft texture that is not anything I would say is acceptable. Sponge like. None of the gluten that is developed when a great bread maker makes their dough. Saying it was like a tasteless Twinkie might be somehow accurate, but it's not that. Squishy crust. Why? That's not a proper baguette or French bread. Every sandwich chain has their own unique thing that sets them apart from the countless others. This place relies on firefighters being brave heroic men and women, but it can't be anything else, can it? The hot sauces, well they area pretty decent hook. But I'm thinking that in perhaps 4-5 years I'll probably try again, not at this location, but maybe the Sun prairie one. The two in Madison, I'm now fully reminded, both blow. Ambiance? You mean the fake fireman stuff? The hot sauces are ok I guess. The scorpion one I tried, hinted at being hot. It had the highest heat number of the bunch, but I'd say it was beneath siracha in scoville points. read more

Found a bone in the Zesty Garlic Hook&Ladder. 'Found' by biting down, I am not coming back and I wouldn't suggest anyone else come either to this location. I used to come here all the time when I first moved to Middleton, and I got to watch the sandwiches slowly divert from amazing to half-assed at best. Terrible quality control, I wish I would have taken a photo of the sandwich because it looked nothing like the promo-photo on the wall. It fell apart as I was eating it. First, I will say the food is pretty good. However, the service at the Madison store is horrendous. My very large order arrived two hours late and only after I made multiple calls to the store. The manager first attempted to blame me, then she backtracked and stated the order had been scheduled for delivery. The subs at Firehouse aren't mindblowing, but they definitely feel a step up from Subway's, Milio's, etc. I'd been to the Fish Hatchery location a few times last year, but this was my first visit to the westside store. We stopped on a Sunday night and it was pretty quiet. It took a bit for the clerk to notice us standing there, but he was overly apologetic once he did. I gave one of their turkey sandwiches a try, with everything on it except for the onions. The smoked turkey didn't have a discernible smoked flavor, but the quality was on par with Quizno's. The bread was good and nothing got too soggy despite their steaming schtick. I appreciate the pickle spear on the side and the price for a medium isn't too crazy. The restaurant space itself commits fully to the firefighting theme, including Dalmatian-print tables and a mural with Bucky Badger hanging out in front of a burning building - you know, like you do. This location was less steamy/smoky than the other location I've been to, and everything was clean and orderly. For a quick sandwich, it's not a bad spot, especially now that Sliced is no longer in business. read more

Just finished eating half of a large sized Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket and so far it's been the only sandwich I've gotten at Firehouse Subs since it's my favorite! The sandwich was delicious and the staff was very friendly as usual! The theme of the shop definitely sets it apart from other sandwich shops with the Firehouse Theme. There's a beautiful mural on the wall (which just so happens to be a Pokémon Go spot). Inside there is ample seating, but typically we take the sandwiches to go. I'd definitely recommend getting a combo with a medium sandwich or a large sandwich (I like to save half for lunch the next day). With a combo, you can get a bag of chips and a drink on the side. There's also a nice slice of pickle with every sandwich, so that's always a nice surprise! Also, a rounding up donation to the foundation is always nice that this place supports a good cause. Although, I only go to this Firehouse Subs a few times a month, I definitely enjoy each visit! read more

I stop at sandwich shops when I'm tired and hungry and want to get home. I wanted to support this business during the pandemic. I placed an order online, which did NOT tell me I would be waiting in the store for 30 minutes after my pickup time. I placed a curbside pick up and I had to go in and wait for 30 minutes. I understand you are busy but you should have contacted me via the information I have at checkout to let me know about the situation. Firehouse Subs really puts out the fire at all other sub/sandwich joints (haha!). I love the concept and the decor ain't shabby either. The staff strikes the perfect balance between a grab-n-go joint and a sit-down place. If you dine-in, they will bring your subs to your tabl, and then pick up the empty trays once you are finished. The menu isn't so large as to be overwhelming, and the prices are comparable to typical sub/sandwich places ($5ish for a sandwich and $8ish for a meal w/ drink and chips). Although there were quite a few sandwiches that I wanted to try on the menu, I ended up going with the smokehouse beef + cheddar. The sandwich was served up piping hot with no veggies (just the way I like it!)...just super tender beef sandwiched between some melted cheddar cheese and doused with BBQ sauce. Delish. So far my favorite is the pastrami and corned beef sandwich (Sooooooooo gooooooood)... The steak/cheese is fantastic as well. I look forward to trying other selections! Subs here cost a little more than other places, but the quality is higher. The 8" sub (in a combo) is plenty, even for a big guy like me. I'd rate at 5-stars if it were a better deal ($9 is more than I prefer to pay for lunch) OR if deals/coupons were availble (and not just on Saturday mornings). Sandwich was expensive without any real leg up over the competition. Products slopped out of the sandwich when I tried to pick it up on both sides. Staff seemed somewhat listless and uncommunicative past their minimum requirement, which tells me they're probably underpayed, overworked, under-appreciated. Women were operating the registers while minorities made the food. Checked the website; upper management is all white men. I see a pattern here. I have gone to two Firehouse sub locations, both in Madison, and each time I find myself asking "Why did I go here? Oh yeah, I'm pressed for time and this place is on the way," and then I endeavor to not go back. I have been a fan of Firehouse for quite some time. Recently I ordered online as I have many, many times and arrived at the time to pick up the sub. I waited for 10+ minutes to allow extra time, even though the store wasn't busy. After waiting awhile, I went up to the counter to check in on my order. Two employees could not find my online order, suggested many, many times that I was at the wrong location or didn't place the order and went to the back to get the manager to help. Granted, it was July 4th and it's a pain to have to work but to have the shift manager flat out tell me that there are only 2 staff and it'll take 45 minutes to get food was not the best way to interact.
