I gave Portillo's two chances and will not be going back. The first time went inside about a month after they opened. It was around 5:00. Long lines, I waited with husband and then after ordering, I went to find table. I must have waited for him to get back about 15-20 minutes. I ordered chicken Parmesan and got spaghetti and meatballs. I complained to people running around cleaning tables and they said I would have to go back to lines. I did not, and ate it. Second time I went to drive up, there was 10-15 cars in line. A young man took my order, a grilled chicken sandwich and fries. Minnesota FINALLY has a Portillo's! First time I tried Portillo's was in Chicago and I fell in love with their hot beef sandwich with peppers and dipped so you know I HAD to give this place a try. I know you are all wondering, 'if you fell in love with the hot beef sandwich, why only 3 stars?' well continue to read and you shall find out. I waited a while to come to let the hype die down...it NEVER died down. The lines are always long and its kind of hard to avoid so be prepared to wait. They have their own parking space but its on the corner of the busiest area of the mall, which sucks. Good luck getting into the area during the holidays, the light takes FOREVER and tons of traffic. I would avoid during that time of the year. When you first walk in, its a little dark and open concept. To the left is where you can pick up your online order, grab a beer, or some dessert. To the right is where you walk to get in line to order. Whenever I have come there has been two form lined with 3 cashiers. I ordered the hot beef sandwich with hot peppers dipped, and kids size spaghetti, one Chicago dog. This part goes pretty fast. Once you have placed your order you walk down this aisle and you can look into the kitchen to see the cooks prep your food. The salad bar is pretty cool to look at. Unfortunately if there are a ton of people who ordered before you, you are kind of stuck in this narrow aisle and just basically standing there. To the right is the kitchen, to the left is a retaining wall to block off the dining area. To me this was pretty annoying. Once you are freed from the line in the aisle everyone stands in the middle. It can get pretty crowded since you are waiting for your number to be called. This part sucks. I waited over 20 minutes for my 3 items! People who came after me received their food before me. I started to get annoyed because now my 7 year old son is starving and we still have no food. I finally ask the counter people where my food was. THEY GAVE MY FOOD AWAY to the WRONG customers. To make this short, they prepped my food within 5 minutes after I mentioned something and gave me 2 slices of their delicious chocolate cake. This place is fabulous. Just what you need to hit the spot. There are a few kinks and things to work out but this is very expected as they are still pretty new. I went overboard in ordering. The hot dogs are great. The hamburger is good. The coleslaw is fabulous. The tamale(which I was surprised they had) was great. The fries are just average. The chocolate ECLAIR CAKE was the prize winner for me!!! I will be back for that alone. The only thing is I wish it had been Friday as I wanted to try their Friday special(meatless). It looked great. Cashier didn't have to much noticed personality. Again kinks. New. The bathrooms could have used attention and the garbages were overflowing. To be expected. Kinks to work out. We stopped Jeff to ask him a question about whaat to order on our next visit, as we were from out of town and had visited a Chicago store, but this was our first time at this branch. He immediately thanked us for stopping, answered all of our questions and sent us on the road with some chocolate cake to go. We left with full stomaches and smiles on our faces. Meh. Went there once several months after it opened, was later at night after peak dinner hours but unfortunately still quite busy so we still ended up waiting about 40 minutes. ALL our food was cold but still tasted ok. Decided to give it another shot a few months later, and same thing - long wait, barely lukewarm food - every item. Also agree with previous reviewers - behind the counter seems poorly organized and executed with tons of employees but lots of ppl standing around looking at the screens, not sure what to do next. I placed a online order that I picked up at the drive through. When I got home A part of my order was missing. When I called them to complain I received a half-hearted apology and a offer to refund the cost of the missing item. Well, yes refunding the amount I paid for a item they didn't give me is the LEAST they can do. How about offering a discount on the entire bill, or coupons for next time...SOMETHING, ANYTHING! I have to say, I was pretty disappointed in my Portillo's experience. The cashier wasn't very friendly. She was really working hard not to use her finger tips on the cash register. I've never seen someone twist their wrist so hard so as to use a knuckle to tap. She was also highly involved with her conversation with the other cashier so she asked me what I wanted to drink multiple times (since she would ask and then divert her attention to her conversation). Ok fine- got my food ordered. Now for the WAIT. The orders come out in whatever order the kitchen pleases. There were numbers callled that were far beyond my number. Yikes. Finally my food arrives. My Chicago dog was actually pretty decent. The bun was soft and fresh. The dog was delicious and juicy. Then I moved on to the burger (don't judge- I couldn't decide what to order so I got two items). The beef patty was pretty well done...it actually had a crunch to it. I was far from impressed. The prices were pretty reasonable. Would I go back? Maybe in several months so they can get their process figured out. Maybe the menu is a bit too expansive which is creating such chaos. read more

Don't Believe The Negative Reviews Let me set the scene. It's a calm Saturday afternoon on a cool windless June day at the park. You're lounging in a chair with a large brimmed hat and sunglasses, feeling the sun intermittently warm your body as it plays hide and seek with the clouds. You lift a glass of ice cold tea to take a sip, as you look over and see a family of 4 having a picnic under the trees. You begin to smell the searing scent of smoke from the charcoal grill as it wafts towards where you're sitting. You inhale deeply, taking in the smell of the freshly cooked barbecue. You can feel your mouth begin to water as you desire to be the fifth member of that family. But what could they be eating? Your first guess might as well be Portillo's. My girlfriend and I came here on a Friday for an early lunch. We heard that this place was going to be busy so we figured we would try to arrive a bit earlier than when the crowd was anticipated. Alas, our attempts were thwarted as the desire of many to go to Portillo's was staggering. Upon walking in, my girlfriend and I were quickly discouraged that we could have an enjoyable meal together as surely it would be difficult for any crew to keep up with the pace and demand that Maple Grove MN was offering. However, this is the part where I give huge props to the Portillo's team. Despite the overwhelming size of the crowd, the team did not buckle one bit and proceeded forward diligently to fulfill as many orders as possible. Although there were roughly 80ish people in line, not including the drive thru, my girlfriend and I were able to order and get our food roughly within 10 minutes. I was impressed. They had 4 registers firing on all cylinders taking orders and when the rush surged forward even more, they sent out crew members to take orders from people in the line (having 6 people total taking orders). The initiative of the crew to take in the influx of orders that they did was greatly appreciated and impressive. Our order consisted of: 1 Portillo Hot Dog with no onions, 1 Hamburger with no mayonnaise, 1 large cheese fries, 1 Small Coke, and 1 Small Cake Shake. Before I dig into the review some more, I would like to give props to the Portillo's crew once more for the accuracy of the order. Despite the custom Hot Dog and Burger, despite the hungry mob of people swarming in, our order was 100% complete and accurate. Bravo Portillos, Bravo! Of this meal, I would say the highlight is a tie between the Portillo's Hot Dog and the Cake Shake. The Portillo's Hot Dog surmounted the expectations I had for it (which admittedly, after ordering Hot Dogs from other establishments, wasn't very high). However, the first bite put all of my doubts to rest. The Hot Dog itself had a full, meaty flavor, which complemented the tomatoes, pickle, and peppers that were on top. The toppings were not overwhelming, but were complementary. It wasn't too much dog and not enough toppings, or too many toppings and not enough dog, but the perfect mix of the two. Not only that, but the toppings were fresh and crisp, the complete opposite of what you'd find at other fast food establishments. Props to Portillo's! The Cake Shake is arguably one of the better shakes I've had. If you're on the fence about getting one, get one! It's essentially a chocolate shake with cake pieces in it. It sounds weird at first but it works, trust me. The burger was good. It actually inspired the picnic opening at the beginning of this review. My impression of it was exactly what I remember eating at picnics growing up as a child. A great burger that doesn't taste like fat. My girlfriend enjoyed the bun on the burger, noting that it was full and not soggy. Here too was a good balance between bun, burger, and toppings. All of the components complemented each other nicely, without one piece overpowering another. The cheese fries were a moot point for me. I guess I expected a bed of fries with cheese sauce drizzled on the top, but instead got fries with a cheese cup on the side. Arguably, it could have been a DIY version of what I was expecting, but I think I'll just roll with the regular fries next time. The Coke tasted like a Coke, for those who were wondering. In conclusion, I'm coming here again. No question, hands down. The service was quick and kept up with the pace of customers. Admittedly, given the long lines in the place, it may feel like you're in for a long waiting session, but it goes by pretty quick. They got this down to a science. The food here is spectacular. Absolutely delicious. I see myself buying another Portillo's Dog in the near future (or two, hehe). Great food, great experience, and if you close your eyes and drown out the noise, you may even envision yourself at a picnic on a cool, windless, June day at the park. read more

We have tried Portillo's a few times now since they opened. Only once inside and that was more than enough--will stick to the drive through but mainly for my son who enjoys their plain hotdogs. Plain and simply put: its a fast food experience. They package up your food as though it's for takeout whether you plan to eat in the restaurant or not. So, to be specific, when you order your cheese chili dog "for here" they will wrap it in a wrapper that the cheese and chilly will stick to and hand it to you on a tray --but in a to go bag The cups are made of styrofoam which is sooo 1998. Time to upgrade to something a bit more biodegradable Portillo's For the number of employees they have shuffling around behind the counter, you'd expect top notch service and product but it's just fast food. It's not made with love or any vague resemblance of affection. It's slopped together like your typical fast food joint would, tossed in a bag and your number is barked out for you to come pick it up like you're literally in an assembly line. Sounds fun, right? It's best if you order your food through the drive through and eat in your car like you would at a McDonald's. read more

Wow. I really like the food here. But this place can't get an order right to save their lives. Every order I've had recently has had an error or missing something. Twice I ordered a chili dog and an Italian beef and twice got only the beef sandwich. It's a 20 minute drive from my house. The first time I went to the drive through, and didn't think to double check the order. Got home, no chili dog for my husband, so we split the sandwich. Called and complained, they manager said he would refund, but he never did. The second time I ordered the same through Door Dash and again, just an Italian beef arrived. Door Dash refunded for the missing hot dog. Last Saturday Ordered about $133 worth of food through the Portillo's app for a group of 7, including five dry Italian beef sandwiches and two hotdogs. I ordered 11 gravies so everyone would have enough. Before I placed the order, I called and talked to a team member and explained I was placing a large order and it was very important to get everything right. She assured me she would watch for the order and make sure it was complete and correct. When it arrived, no gravy! The gravy is what makes the sandwiches good. Also no sweet peppers on the beef as ordered. Called the store, and the manager had the gravies sitting right there (of course didn't bother to call me and let me know they had been left behind nor did he make any effort to get them out the door until after I called) had the gravies sent out, but of course we didn't get them for 45 minutes, so by then everything was cold. And none of the gravies were wrapped separately, and about half of them leaked into the bag they were in because the lids were cracked and leaking. No one was impressed and I'm pretty sure they lost 7 customers that day. The manager said he would send me some coupons, and I also complained via the survey on how the order went. Got a coupon for a free entree and drink that is only good for online and in-store ordering and does not include ribs, sides, desserts and shakes. I now know it will make no difference to Portillos, but we've all been talking about it and letting our other friends know how bad the service is. Would not recommend. So disappointed to see how this company treats their employees. My husband and I were here this past Saturday and what we witnessed was unacceptable. We went through the drive through at the maple grove location and notice an employee shivering to the bone, as it was freezing cold that day taking orders and relaying them on a walkie to who ever was inside. I'm assuming their system was broken but to see the this young girl freezing was ridiculous. Please fix this! If that means closing the drive-thru until this is fixed then do that, but having your employees freezing outside is not ok! read more

Won't be returning, ever. I'm not one to review a place but after my bad experience I've got to say something. First off, we arrive on a Tuesday at 5:30pm- place is mostly full- busy but not crushed. Plenty of staff on hand. Get up to place our order and they are out of meatballs, and baked potatoes as well. Order for 4 placed at 5:46. Then we wait. After 15 mins nothing. After 30 mins ask for manager and get nothing. I'm seeing lots of other customers come up to the counter with various food issues. At 45 minutes I'm furious but get some of the order, but not the whole order. Food we do get is now cold and mushy. After 10 more mins of not getting whole order (1hour after ordering) asked for refund and left without eating anything as what we did get was gross and disgusting. I don't mind fast casual, but this place isn't fast and isn't casual. People are everywhere as the layout is terrible. It's loud, super noisy and I just don't get what could possibly be the draw to this place long term. Prices were ok I suppose, but nothing- and I mean nothing about this place makes me ever want to come back for a 2nd chance. read more

I'm from Chicago, we have portillos everywhere. I am SO happy to find one in Minneapolis, you have no idea. Best hotdogs, best beef sandwiches, get a beef and cheddar croissant and you will be in heaven. There is not one bad thing on their menu. I grew up on portillos in Naperville. The drive-in experience is HORRIBLE!!! It stands to reason that most folks who go through the drive-in are either ordering their food to eat on the go or taking it home. Portillo's had two drive in lines open. I ordered a milkshake and large fry. My order was brought out to my car after 15 minutes. There was no way for me to leave the line and be in my way. I decided to check on this place on opening weekend. Keep in mind this isn't my first time at a Portillo's location so I knew what I was expecting. We decided to wait for the after dinner rush which worked greatly in our favor. We walked right up, got greeted by the nice lady in the front who directed us to the ordering line. The ordering line was not very long, we were able to immediately place our order. As big as this place was, it took a bit of time to find a table but shortly after we did, our food was ready. The food is good, not amazing, but good. I mean, what can you truly expect from a place that capitalizes on the infamous "Chicago dog." I was in the neighborhood and hadn't had lunch so thought I would go for a hotdog. I stopped at Portillo's in Maple Grove. I have to admit, their hotdogs are soft and have no taste at all. Just a soft tasteless mushy piece of bologna is how I would describe it. The mustard, ketchup, relish, onions and tomatoes didn't mask the dull mushy tasteless weener. Yuk. The fries were good.
