I've tried them three times to try to be fair. First visit was during opening week, with the "national opening team" present. Things were incredibly slow. Glacially slow. But the place was packed, so I understand. Second time, a week later, I ordered an Italian beef with extra peppers and gravy, a large fry, and a soda. The receipt on the outside of the bag I picked up was correct but inside the bag were a plain cheeseburger and a small Italian beef also plain. Third time, I ordered online. When I arrived, they were out of both the slice of chocolate cake and the strawberry shortcake and offered shakes in exchange. Wanting to have them removed from my order took waiting 10 minutes for a manager to materialize on top of the 10 minutes I waited at the to-go counter. The food is alright but the service is awful. I've been to Portillo's in Chicago and was excited to see they finally came to MN! Portillo has solid 'Chicago' food but it's not my favorite. First and most importantly, Its BUSY and be prepared to wait. The line moves but hope you have patience. Once you order it is fun to watch them make it in their 'well oiled machine' of a kitchen. But the numbers are called at random. Make sure you grab a table so you have a place to eat. I recommend sitting down and just waiting for your number to get called over the loud speaker. My boyfriend ordered a dipped big beef and it was good. It was at least 8 inches long! I'm picky on meat and that was good! The beef was tender and moist. He LOVES the sandwich and wants to go back for another. I had a chili cheese dog. It was good but I've had better. The hot dog was good as anyone would imagine at a Chicago restaurant. Chili was fine, but it had a slice of cheese almost like a plastic wrapped American cheese. There was a pile of onions on top, while I like some but not a pile of onions. I was expecting it to be over flowing with chili and cheese and was disappointed. It was over flowing with onions instead. We also got a strawberry malt and it was a solid decision. We both agreed that we'd totally come back just for Malts again! Thick, creamy and full of flavor! They do sell beer and not just domestic stuff! My boyfriend ordered a beer. Sister and I tried this place for lunch today. It was our first time. We were waiting for the buzz to die down. We walked in just before noon. The place was just under half full. We stopped to get the lay of the land... where to order, where to pick up. There were two employees standing near the door. They must have noticed we looked confused. They helped us find the order line. It was empty. They have a huge menu... just needed to decide if I wanted a burger or chicken or hot dog or Italian beef! We each ordered a cheese burger. SIDES ARE SEPERATE so make sure to ask for fries as they are not included! And we split a Portillo's hot dog because we needed to try their specialty. The employees at the door had told us to order and then pick our table. No need to stand in front of the pick up window. { Other customers weren't doing this! It just clogs up the area for others to reach the condiment section. And then people have to weave through the crowd with their trays of food. } They announce your order number over the PA system. It's loud in there but you can still hear your number. Walk up, and grab your tray. Trays come with built in (4) cup holders...see pics in gallery. Drinks don't come with straws so grab at condiment table. The only thing I didn't like is that the tray didn't have a paper liner. Burgers can be messy and I like to not eat off the table cloth. I had to lay down a bunch of napkins to set my burger on. Burgers come in the old school McDonald's foam clam containers (think to-go boxes) so you have to dig it out. Hot dog comes wrapped up in paper so that was easy to eat. Fries come in cardboard boxes, similar to other fast food joints. Drinks come in foam cups, dispensed behind the counter. Small is good size, but since you don't have access to soda fountain, maybe order large. I ordered a malt too. Small was enough!! Bigger than DQ sizes! **By the time we finished, there was a huge order line and almost every table was occupied. It's a huge place so that speaks to me that this must be a good place. Lobby is staffed for table clean up. You can bus your own trays, but our tray was picked up for us. Thanks! We stopped inside bathroom to wash our hands. Very clean facilities. No shelf to set down your drink. Sink is one huge basin so there is no counter. With this being a hyped and new restaurant I expected a lot more in quality. Service - Service here was fantastic, even with the insanely busy lines the staff were pleasant and very helpful. I have absolutely no complaints of the service here. Food - This is where I have the issue. I ordered a Hot Dog which of course is the typical chicago dog. I was NOT impressed. This Hot Dog for the price was absolutely tiny, this was not made to be a meal at all. I honestly can't recommend this place to anyone based on the hot dog I got. It was just not up the the standards of what I would expect from a name like Portillos. I would give this place a solid 3.7 if I could. My husband and I went Thursday night and when we pulled into the parking lot, we saw a long line of cars for the drive through. I was a little worried we would have trouble finding a table for 6, but although it was bustling and full of energy inside, we found seating immediately. It's counter service. My husband ordered the Italian beef and I opted for the chicken greek salad. The food was decent, but not out-of-this-world-mind-blowing-omg-I-must-come-back good. My mom wanted her first time here to be with me while I was in town visiting from Texas and she regrets it now. Don't go on a weekend for the first few months. It is very busy, and for good reason! This place is phenomenal! I had the hot beef sandwich with hot peppers and split fries with my son. My son had the chicken sandwich. The only complaint I have is i didn't see a kid menu. The sandwich I bought him was broiled, but he said it tasted burnt- I loved it though. Don't ever ever ever ask for a "pup cup" should you have your dog with you. You will be berated like no tomorrow, screamed at and made to feel stupid! Been receiving them for three years (twice weekly). This week, when I inquired, I was told "we don't have ice cream and never give out pup cups." I was excited to try their Italian Beef after having it in Chicago back in 2010. Sadly, it wasn't as good as the first time. I got it dipped and forgot to add the hot and sweet peppers. After realizing I was missing that important component, I went back to the counter and ordered some on the side. It did make the sandwich taste a little better but the beef was kinda bland and a bit dry, the gravy was bland, and in hindsight I should just got the sandwich splashed with gravy since the bread quickly became soggy and cold. I added some salt and some leftover cheese sauce from our order of fries and ate the rest with a fork. It was more edible that way but overall I wasn't impressed as I was the first time I ever ordered it. I'm not sure if it was just this location or perhaps my palate has become more refined. Went through the drive thru with my boyfriend for lunch today. We placed our order. Girl at the first window recited back to us what we ordered and she missed the fries so we added this to our order. We pulled up to the next window to get our food and it took forever to get it to us. We ordered a salad, fries and a beef sandwich. After we received our food, i try to ask the girl for ketchup and she just walks away.. I checked the bag to make sure everything was in there. The fries were missing. So I had my boyfriend pull around so I could run inside. I went up to the counter where they deliver you your food if you're dining in and was ignored for a few mins until I finally spoke up. I let the guy know I was just in the drive thru and I didn't receive the fries I had ordered. He doesn't say anything just turns around and talks to a guy who I assume is a manager, his name was Andrew. Andrew comes up to me and I let him know the same thing. He says nothing to me, goes over grabs a large fry and throws it in a bag. Hands it to me and says nothing and turns around. I had to get his attention again to get ketchup packets because they only have cups for ketchup out on the floor for customers that are dining in. He looks at me, grabs a hand full of ketchup packets and pretty much throws them to me... and again says nothing, turns around and goes back to what he's doing. No "I apologize for the mixup" or "thanks." I can be a little sensitive but when I looked over to the customer standing next to me who was waiting for his food, he seemed just as surprised at the way I was treated as well.... The employees here do not have any manners or sense of customer service. Even the managers are rude. I do not recommend this Portillo's to anyone. You see a bunch of people standing around like cattle right as you walk in so it's automatic to think that's where you go stand in line to order. Husband recommended this place because he had gone to one in Chicago. Went on a Saturday evening at around 6. The deal is you order your food at the registers and then mosey on over to another area to pick up the food. There are plenty of tables and booths in this "serve yourself" establishment. They forgot the bread and coleslaw. We went back for them and also had them remake the malts. I really wish that the wait was worth it. It was not. Burger was charred/burned and hot dog was "eh". Fries were ok and ribs were good but not the best we've had (they claim they are "award winning"). I kept thinking that I could have gotten a much better burger at Five Guys or Smash Burger. While watching the staff work behind the counter those 30+ minutes, I got an opportunity to analyze how they process/fulfill orders. I saw that malts/shakes were made first and sat while they got the rest of the order together. I also noticed that everyone appeared confused - like it was their first day on the job. Representing a city with outstanding restaurants and food culture, this place was pretty weak. My biggest knock on them is the sheer amount of plastic this place uses. I was here-in the drive through-once because my SIL wanted a cake shake for her birthday. The drive through line was long and scary, but the staff got us through in no time as they had a mobile order taker walking down the line of cars. Wow-efficient! This place was busy but no long lines. Most of the tables were full. The food at Portillo's is great. The greatest items from Chicago, that we don't get many good attempts from other restaurants, are the Chicago dog and the Italian beef sandwich. Came hungry, left full! Portions are not what you expect, very happy with the size. Also very delicious food! It's hard to find a place that the whole family can find something good to eat, but Portillo's delivered! My toddler practically inhaled his hot dog. My husband ordered a large shake thinking it would be a typical fast food "large size" and was shocked by the gigantic cup it came in! I ordered a bowl of chili and was also pleasantly surprised by the size of the bowl. It can get pretty busy, so I would recommend not going during peak hours or you may wait awhile in line. Went to the drive thru and was told they no longer accept cash in the drive thru but they would take it inside. When you get off a long shift the last thing you want to do is go inside to pay. Also I don't pay card in the drive thru since my card information wad stolen by an employee in a drive thru and they charged hundreds to my card. So this will no longer be on my list of places to patronize. Corporate is making a poor decision with this, not everyone has a card and some people like me don't want to use cards for a reason. read more

We would have loved to try the food, but after chasing tables (the place was full) trying to find somewhere to sit in this poorly laid out restaurant (it's seat yourself), we waited. And waited. Went for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was PACKED. We had trouble finding a table for 3, but finally found a spot. The staff was all very friendly and seemed comfortable with the crowd, and the prices were cheap. To me that's about where the good stops. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Fries were kinda soggy. Burger was just okay. Chili dog was definitely the best of what our table got. We also had to try the "famous" chocolate cake. Although it wasn't bad, to me it just tasted like a Betty Crocker cake mix and Betty Crocker frosting. Definitely good, but nothing like a homemade cake. Maybe I'm just spoiled with my mom's homemade cake though lol. If you come, come midday so you can get a spot, and definitely stick with the hotdogs if you want something above average. Although it wouldn't be my first choice among the many options in Maple Grove, if I return I want to try their pasta or salads. Those looked good, but I can't comment on them. Overall decent experience, some complaints, but I don't regret eating lunch there. It had to be tried. Maybe I'll be more impressed with their other options if I return. read more
