Overall, probably wouldn't come back if I was craving fast foods. We ordered the all beef hot dog, Caesar salad and the combination sausage/beef dog. My all beef hot dog included a pickle and some tomatoes, other than that, it was nothing special. I could have made the same thing at home easily and it would have tasted better. The combo dog was better but it was so expensive for what you get. $6-7 bucks for a hot dog is pretty insane to me. But, that combo dog was tastier than my beef hot dog. They were quick to order, but we probably waited 25 mins for our food order. For some hot dogs and pre made packaged salad, it shouldn't have to take that long. Over the weekend I had attended Portillo's with some family. I had been here once before with my mother, and I thought I wrote a review, but I guess I did not. The only thing I remember about last time, was that they didn't have a side of Kraut, and I am a lover of sauerkraut on my brats and polish sausages when I get them. I'm not a plain jane ketchup person. Anyway, let's talk about this experience. Our table order consisted of 2 Hot dogs, 2 Cake Shakes, 2 Waters, 1 Spaghetti with 2 Meatballs, and 1 Grilled Hot Tuna Caesar Salad. I do like their system they have going; it is kind of fun the way you can see them making some of the food people order. This place has a good vibe, I also noticed you can get free refills on sodas if you just bring them up to the counter where the server will refill it for you. We waited a little bit, and soon our number was called. We were missing the 2 meatballs however. We had mentioned it, and the gentleman was apologetic and prompt with getting those for us. We sat down, and it was packed. Thank goodness for their seating area in the far back of the establishment which was somewhat closed off from the rest maybe for business parties or regular large parties. The 2 Cake shakes were the tables favorite, apparently there are cake pieces at the bottom of the shakes, which was a delicious expected surprise. The spaghetti and meatballs were yummy and the Meatballs were huge! 2 is definitely plenty for a person, I think 1 could have been enough. The two who got the hot dogs enjoyed them and were happy with their decision. I had gotten the Salad, and the Caesar part was great, but the Hot Grilled Tuna was marinated in Teriyaki sauce. Oh it was not a good combination at all. Caesar dressing with Teriyaki sauce, no thank you! I know that if I go here again, I will not be getting the Tuna as a part of the salad. I would just get the plain salad. I wish I was told this prior but it isn't mentioned anywhere on the menu. Overall, the services was decent, and most of the food was delicious. Food was alright. For the price and a La Carte non sense I'll probably go somewhere else next time. I had a steak and cheese baguette and not only was the portion a little smaller than I expected it was kind of boring. French fries were just ok, not a huge fan of crinkle cut, might have to check for other options next time. Chocolate shake was the best part of the meal, of course no drink included so have to order separately. So much styrofoam...so many plastic bags...tons of wasted utensils...so much waste. I'm not an environmental guru or some kind of woke hippie that bashes places that don't use biodegradable everything. However, the individual packaging and use of styrofoam at Portillo's seemed irresponsible. It could be a ripple effect from Covid but the excessive bagging and containers for food was nuts. They forgot my fries, I went to the counter and instead of just handing me the fries, it was placed in a bag and handed over. I even said a bag isn't necessary and was given one anyways. With my parents being from chicago, they tend to miss the food they grew up with. Luckily for Minnesota natives there are a few Portillos in the area. Portillos is a not so classic burger, hot dog, & sandwich restaurant. Their sandwiches/hot dogs are loaded with chicago classics. I would recommend going when you are craving a quick, relatively cheap, and greasy meal. Their fries are just normal fries, but their hot dogs are where it's at. read more

I'd probably forget about this place entirely if it weren't for the rude cashier and poor employee working the food counter that seemed so unbelievably confused. The food was all bland, we got the chili dog, chicken sandwich, cake shake, fries, and onion rings. The onion rings were so crispy they were almost like captain crunch destruction on the roof of my mouth. The cake shake was what I was most excited for and honest you can just get a chocolate shake at DQ and it's way better. The cashier was super rude to my cousin, interrupted her, she had a coupon for her birthday and they interrupted her to read the code and when she did they sighed and said "I need to see the code!" They also rolled their eyes a few times. Seemed pretty miserable to be there. The food counter employee was so confused, gave us two pieces of cake instead of one cake and a shake, got to the table and they forgot the chicken sandwich. I'm not from Chicago, but I have been to Portillo's enough to have a standard for what it should taste like and this restaurant fit the bill! I tried a hot dog for the first time (usually I get the beef sandwich) and it was excellent! Love all the fixings with a squishy bun. The fires are Kringle cut, slightly crispy. I suggest getting the cheese fries-so good! The service was pretty fast (as per usual), but they got a couple things wrong. They didn't give us a Coke we had ordered and gave my mother Marinara instead of meat sauce. I love this restaurant chain and was so glad to see one come to Arbor Lakes. My first visit to a Portillo's so had zero expectations. There's a fun interior decor with lots of seats and an equally huge kitchen. If you're looking for healthy grub you should drive past or invite your cardiologist to join you...this place does NOT come with a salad bar. You will find lots of hot dog options served on fresh, seeded rolls and just about anything else including a nuclear glow, bright green relish (see photo). Overall, Portillo's is a good place to bring the kids who will enjoy the primarily deep fried menu options. Love Portillo's but this was the second time we've had to throw our orders in the trash at this location. Chicago dogs were not fully cooked barely warmer than air temp, with soggy mushy buns. Some of the fries were also not fully cooked or totally burnt. Not sure what's going on in their kitchen but deeply disappointed at how their service is going down hill. Portillo's will be open soon in Maple Grove!! I signed up my email early and got a golden ticket for their soft opening. I've never been to one before so I was super excited to try it! It was noon on a Friday so I was starving! The parking lot was super busy so alot of other people were invited too. I turned my golden ticket in to get a nice stocking cap with their name on it. Cool! You could also make a donation to the local school district! Way to get involved in the community! Next I was given a special menu for the event. I could order anything from these. What to get? The first one was easy! A Chicago dog with cheese fries and a sweet tea please. They write your order on a paper bag and then you wait in line a bit more. Next stop the cashier. This part of the process went rather quickly. I was snapping photos and before I knew it there I was. My guest got the Chopped salad a regular salad with pasta, chicken, and bacon, yum! A side of pasta salad and a lemonade. The place was so busy we got it to go since it was tough to find a place to sit. The majority of us in line must have had stuff to go or wanted our food before grabbing a table because there was a bit of a bottleneck here. Not a bunch of room to wait for our orders. Plus read the sign above! Numbers are called out when your meal is ready not in order! OH! Minnesotans don't play that! It was amusing to hear the employee call out a rhyme with every number! Some customers may not have enjoyed that as much as others, but I was impressed! There was lots of stuff to look at on the walls and ceiling until your food was ready. To top it all off you got a bit of cake to take home too! A really nice touch! Oh yeah, the food! I loved the crinkle cut fries and the side pasta salad! Great Greek flavors in that pasta salad! Excellent olives! The sweet tea could have been sweeter, but that's how my Grandma always made it. The Chicago dog was classic with all the right notes and reminded me of my trips to the Windy City! The atmosphere, service and food were all above average for a hot dog joint. My wife had the coney dog- a hot dog is a hot dog no matter where you eat them. Chicago-based Portillo's chain has expanded into the Minneapolis-St. Paul market and I'm happy to have them more easily accessible. This restaurant comes from Chicago roots as a single little hotdog stand in Villa Park, Illinois. Portillo's isn't about the food, which is fine and consistent, but the experience is really about the people,and there are lots and lots of people! People are standing in lines to order, milling around awaiting their pick up number to be called in a wonderfully whimsical rhyming pattern, waiting in the drive through wrapped around the building, or filling up all the tables inside the cavernous interior. It's also about watching the masses of people in the open kitchen cranking out dogs and sandwiches at a frantic pace. Fair warning, if you're not a people person or you're adverse to loud noises, you're going to hate this place. The energy level is over the top and you should take time to drink it all in! This was the first time my husband and I visited the Portillo's in Maple Grove. I was a little bit disappointed. We arrived about 9:15ish, close to closing time I know. I ordered a salad but they said that they were out of lettuce. I had never heard of this before, I understand it was the end of the night but it seemed a little odd to me. I sat for close to 45 minutes waiting for my food. You can see the kitchen in Portillo's and I noticed that most of the staff was standing around not completing orders. They also forgot hot peppers on my husband's sandwich. I'm not sure if this was because of the time we went in or not. read more

Love that fact that Portillo's is so close! I always go to the Maple Grove location and it's always been a pleasure. The wait is not too long to order and then you walk on down to the pick up area. Please please pay attention for your order number! The staff are already shouting at the top of their lungs. I love the Chicago dog and Italian! It's basically my go to order, along with fries! Ditch your staff at this location, Portilllo, and just start over! Seriously. My husband grew up in Chicago and we both agree that Portillo's makes THE BEST beef to be had. And this location delivers when it comes to the beefs. But the service is RELIABLY terrible. We repeat visit because it's the closest, but we know we are going to have to wait 30 minutes or more for our food and then another 10 minutes because they're going to get the order wrong. It's almost entertaining. The staff are slow moving and often seem clueless. This speaks to management as much as it does the staff. Go to the one in Rosedale. I was very impressed in that about 10 people were waiting for their food ahead of me , and I had my food in 10 minutes. The other excellent thing on their menu are Chicago dogs. I have been to several top rated authentic dog restaurants in Chicago and they aren't any better than Portillo's. Be sure to get their signature chocolate cake for dessert. We have been customers of the Maple Grove, MN Portillo's since they opened. I liked that there was finally a restaurant here that had Italian beef sandwiches. We had lunch here on 10/15/22. We arrived about 15 minutes after they opened. We ordered a large fry, a big Italian beef sandwich, and a cheeseburger. When looking for a table, we found all of the booths had not been cleaned from the previous day. We waited at least 15 minutes for our food and we were ticket #3. Yes, I know the food doesn't come out in the order of the tickets, but ours was a pretty simple small order. When we started to eat, we noticed everything was luke warm. Fries were also over salted. I do love that they have the cheapest price in town for Chicago style hot dogs, but they're not the only place that sells them. I primarily go there for their Italian beef, it's not nearly as good as my mother's. Perhaps this was a valuable learning experience. From now on, I'll make my own Italian beef. Food has always been good, also hot. This place has went downhill. We won't be back any time soon. read more

I've been waiting a long time to try this place and the review is finally in.....I wanted to love it, but it's just not that good. Maybe it's because I'm a girl from a beef cattle farm who grew up on really stellar beef hotdogs....I'm not saying that Portillo's isn't good, it's just not "wow". We tried the dipped beef, a chili dog, and one of the specialty dogs....I was just so underwhelmed. It's fine to eat, but would I go back tomorrow, nope. Chili dog was average, dipped beef was okay, best part were the pickled spicy veggies; the specialty hot dog was probably my favorite although it was sloppily slapped together. I've been to Portillo's in Chicago and was excited to see they finally came to MN! Portillo has solid 'Chicago' food but it's not my favorite. First and most importantly, Its BUSY and be prepared to wait. The line moves but hope you have patience. Once you order it is fun to watch them make it in their 'well oiled machine' of a kitchen. But the numbers are called at random. Make sure you grab a table so you have a place to eat. I recommend sitting down and just waiting for your number to get called over the loud speaker. My boyfriend ordered a dipped big beef and it was good. It was at least 8 inches long! I'm picky on meat and that was good! The beef was tender and moist. He LOVES the sandwich and wants to go back for another. I had a chili cheese dog. It was good but I've had better. The hot dog was good as anyone would imagine at a Chicago restaurant. Chili was fine, but it had a slice of cheese almost like a plastic wrapped American cheese. There was a pile of onions on top, while I like some but not a pile of onions. I was expecting it to be over flowing with chili and cheese and was disappointed. It was over flowing with onions instead. We also got a strawberry malt and it was a solid decision. We both agreed that we'd totally come back just for Malts again! Thick, creamy and full of flavor! They do sell beer and not just domestic stuff! My boyfriend ordered a beer. Like I rarely salt things. -the ground needed to be swept due to trash. The floor was fine, however under my table was very dirty and obviously 'hiding' -the condiment table was basically empty. I could count on two hands how many straws there was. There was no little ketchup paper cups so I had to pump my ketchup onto a napkin. Food was good as always and I plan to return for the food. Sister and I tried this place for lunch today. It was our first time. We were waiting for the buzz to die down. We walked in just before noon. The place was just under half full. We stopped to get the lay of the land... where to order, where to pick up. There were two employees standing near the door. They must have noticed we looked confused. They helped us find the order line. It was empty. They have a huge menu... just needed to decide if I wanted a burger or chicken or hot dog or Italian beef! We each ordered a cheese burger. SIDES ARE SEPERATE so make sure to ask for fries as they are not included! And we split a Portillo's hot dog because we needed to try their specialty. The employees at the door had told us to order and then pick our table. No need to stand in front of the pick up window. { Other customers weren't doing this! It just clogs up the area for others to reach the condiment section. And then people have to weave through the crowd with their trays of food. } They announce your order number over the PA system. It's loud in there but you can still hear your number. Walk up, and grab your tray. Trays come with built in (4) cup holders...see pics in gallery. Drinks don't come with straws so grab at condiment table. The only thing I didn't like is that the tray didn't have a paper liner. Burgers can be messy and I like to not eat off the table cloth. I had to lay down a bunch of napkins to set my burger on. Burgers come in the old school McDonald's foam clam containers (think to-go boxes) so you have to dig it out. Hot dog comes wrapped up in paper so that was easy to eat. Fries come in cardboard boxes, similar to other fast food joints. Drinks come in foam cups, dispensed behind the counter. Small is good size, but since you don't have access to soda fountain, maybe order large. I ordered a malt too. Small was enough!! Bigger than DQ sizes! **By the time we finished, there was a huge order line and almost every table was occupied. It's a huge place so that speaks to me that this must be a good place. Lobby is staffed for table clean up. You can bus your own trays, but our tray was picked up for us. Thanks! We stopped inside bathroom to wash our hands. Very clean facilities. No shelf to set down your drink. Sink is one huge basin so there is no counter. Not a bad thing, just be aware to leave drink at table and return for it or have sister hold it and then switch. read more

With this being a hyped and new restaurant I expected a lot more in quality. Service - Service here was fantastic, even with the insanely busy lines the staff were pleasant and very helpful. I have absolutely no complaints of the service here. Food - This is where I have the issue. I ordered a Hot Dog which of course is the typical chicago dog. I was NOT impressed. This Hot Dog for the price was absolutely tiny, this was not made to be a meal at all. I honestly can't recommend this place to anyone based on the hot dog I got. It was just not up the the standards of what I would expect from a name like Portillos. Overall - I suggest if you want a filling and amazing chicago dog for roughly the same price, head over to Uncle Franky's.
