Below average hot dogs in my opinion... This was one of the top recommendations for my visit to chicago so I was very excited to try it. I ordered a regular beef hot dog with everything on it and a chili cheese dog with no cheese. I don't know what it is but the hot dog itself tasted really weird to me. I love Portillo's chopped salad. I used to drive tere for lunch all the time when I worked in Schaumburg. I would get the exact same thing every time. A chopped salad with the Bleu cheese and bacon on the side. No dressing. That's right! The salad is so good that it is good dry. I have to admit though that the dressing is pretty good; I just am not a fan of dressing. The chopped salad also come with a French bread slice and butter. Ooohhh my goodness , if you want a really good salad , I mean like a taste explosion . Two that I recommend and it's one of those good eats that you have to repeat a few times during the week you first discovered it . The Chopped Salad at Portillos ....any Portillos is the best I have ever had . I have been enjoying this salad from time to time for about 5 years now. It has Small noodles , romaine, spinach, red cabbage, green onions, Cold or Hot grilled chicken, feta cheese, some other green lettuce, tomatoes a few other random ingredients. The house dressing is the best and I wish they would sell it at the restaurant or something . The salad also comes with a lemon poppy seed muffin which is really good as a further taste bud punch as if you would need one while eating this salad. I have been a life long Portillo's fan. I've had almost every item on their menu. NOW, with new ownership (Berkshire Partners) I'm questioning one of my favorite restaurants. We just returned from the Rolling Meadows, IL site for a Sunday evening dinner. Was going to use the drive through. WAY to long of a line awaited me. I've been in that line before and service was excellent. After sitting for a while and not moving, I decided to just run inside. No wait at the register. But waited quite a while for our food. UGH....Hot dog bun was soggy. Stuck to the wrapper. Greek salad looked and tasted like it had been made a day or two ago..NOT FRESH. Service was sloppy. Store was dirty, tables and especially the floor. Not the crisp, fresh, clean experience we came to expect from Dick Portillo, let alone the poor food quality. Getting all of your order only 1/3 of the time is one disappointing aspect of this location, but trying to get the issue resolved is another. I come by around 1/2 hour before close. Maybe this is my mistake but I work late and I figure my money is the same to them no matter what time I come by. A couple of months ago, I received only 1/2 my correct order, and didn't realize until I got home. Perhaps that again is my fault for not doing their job and checking the bags. Since I go so close to closing time, I couldn't go back for a remake. I emailed customer service to get a refund, and their reply was that I had to have gone back to the location to get a refund. Which I couldn't do because they were closed when I discovered my order was wrong. I tried explaining but I never received a reply. After a couple of months I decided to give this place another try tonight. Again, only got half my order (no dressing for my salad and no burger) and didn't realize until I got home and they were closed. Can't go wrong with this restaurant when visiting Chicago. Went to the one in Arlington Heights and did not disappoint at all. Had the chocolate cake and it was delicious. The staff was friendly, the food came out quick. No line and cashier listen to my needs and did not rush me. Definitely worth the visit. Had the Italian beef with sausage dipped. OMG! Ordered Portillo's hot dog, Bacon Cheeseburger, fries, onion rings and 2 bottles of water $18.02. Food came really quick, sat at table inside, popped what used to be a glorious onion ring, to find it COLD! Tried one of my husbands fries---same thing cold, opened up my hot dog-cold, husband opened up cheeseburger--cold, cheese never melted. I thought this used to be a place that cooked the food for you, this was 12:45 pm on a Monday afternoon, the place was dead, it was liked they pre-made everything and just let it sit under the lights. Still need to contact either corporate or store manager, this did not sit well with us, this type of food quality. We threw out our food, it was inedible. Plus tables were dirty and salt shakers empty. I don't think a liquor license will help this location. Definitely poor management! read more

Absolutely horrible experience!! This portillos seems understaffed and they always mess up my order someway but this time was the worst by far. I stopped by yesterday night through the drive thru to wait 45 MINUTES in line to get my food. It wasn't until I asked a server handing out food to cars about my order that something was done. My order wasn't even registered correctly because she came back confused twice with orders that weren't mine. They had lost my order and probably handed it to someone else because they had to retake my order right then and there. On top of everything else when we did receive our order ir was wrong, we were missing one of our fries, cheese sauce, and burger, it's ridiculous. We tried calling the restaurant with no response, called today and they weren't even able to get a manager on the phone. Worst part is the guy who originally took my order never even handed me a receipt. Yum! Portillo's chocolate cake. Need I say more? I ordered a whole chocolate cake for my son's second birthday, along with the strawberry shortcake cake for our party. Not only are these two desserts the best things that have ever graced my lips; the customer service is OUTSTANDING. They (the catering side) are top-notch, even calling a few days later to ask how everything went. That's amazing! After I had my baby, all I wanted was a piece of their cake. It's that good. Sinful too! Bless them for making it. The strawberry shortcake is to die for. All the restaurants I have been to of theirs have the most awesome service. Even if the drive-thru is jam-packed, you get your food pretty fast. Inside, I am continually impressed with how customer-oriented they really are. Absolutely love the place! How can you not like Portillo's? I remember the days when I didn't even know what Portillo's was...sad times. I hardly ever come here (only because it's not that good for you...but it tastes great!!), but when I do I go all out. Give me everything you have. Chocolate cake shake, a burger, and cheese fries. And they have wayyyyy more than that. Beefs, hot dogs, salads, soups, you name it! And the chocolate cake...seriously the best (they put mayo in it...no wonder). We have catered from this location for work events, and they are always great about packing things up neatly, helping us out to the car, and being on time (and of course the taste). I prefer this location over the one down the street on Golf. This one is much smaller, but the atmosphere is awesome - I feel like I have gone back in time to the 1950's and The Fonz could walk through the door at any moment. If I could give this location negative stars, they would be a -Five. I visited this location on Sunday, September 18th about 4pm. Can't give the exact time as they conveniently did not give me a receipt. Oh, the oh so charming staff, did provide a "survey receipt" which oddly does not match the dollar amount on my credit card. The line in the drive through was not too long, yet the time was insane. That should have been my immediate clue to leave. It was a sign of the total incompetence of this location. Here is what I ordered: 1 Regular Beef, no peppers, Extra, Extra, Extra, Extra Juicy 1 Big Beef, no peppers, Extra, Extra, Extra, Extra, Extra juicy 1 hot dog, everything but peppers 1 Strawberry Shortcake Extra Gravy for both Beefs, as no matter how many times you tell them to drown it, it is still not wet enough for our tastes. After the extensive repeating of the order, I snaked through the line of 2 cars in front of me. After all this time in line, a worker appears outside to repeat the order and take the payment. My hot dog was not on the order, so it gets added and he gives me this BS story of how they double check to make sure the item is on the order and gets charged. He says often times its there but you don't get charged. I laugh, Portillo's has never failed to charge me, more likely charge and fail to deliver. When I finally make it to the window to collect the food, the "charming" clerk hands me the bag, with the beefs, hot dog and shortcake in one plastic bag, but the shortcake is touching the beef, why??? I look in the bag and find one tiny container half full of gravy and ask for more. After waiting nearly five minutes, a very rude woman who must have been pretending to be a manager, pops her head out of the window and hands me a larger container, again half full, and tells me they are not supposed to do this, blah, blah. If you would give me what I ordered, I would not have to ask for it. When I arrived home, as usual the beef were not wet enough. The hot dog tasted old and stale, there was no "snap" at the first bite. I would strongly advise anyone to stay away from this location. I suggest whomever owns, "manages" or benefits financially from this location, take the time to educate and train your staff on customer service. read more

If you want a great grilled cheese burger, crinkle cut fries, onion rings this is your place. During lent they offer pepper and egg, tuna sandwich on a pretzel or croissant and a grilled portobello sandwich. I've have had the pepper and egg and the tuna sandwich which were both excellent. Everything on the menu is great. Had the hot dog and fries today. Their chocolate cake with chocolate frosting is to die for. I am not a Big fast food eater but when I am looking for some high end fast food this is my place. You won't leave hungry. Enjoy! P.s. I like their tamales too. Portillos may be known for their food, but their service here at this location is horrible. They have multiple people ask you and take your order but by the time you get your food it is incorrect. This has occurred to me the past 3 times I have been there. The manager there or the key supervisors really don't seem to care! Great Customer Satisfaction there - NOT!!!! Living near NYC, I've only been accustomed to Gray's Papaya and Papaya King. I can't say I've had a Chicago Style hotdog before. Although I didn't try it during our recent Chicago trip, I did taste their chili cheese dog which I thought was excellent. The only time I've ever had a chili cheese dog was at Ben's Chili Bowl in DC which I would say is comparable. I was glad we were at least able to stop by one of their locations since apparently it is a thing to do while in Chicago. In addition, my family and I thought the ambiance was great. These retro type restaurants are far and few in between. My kids certainly got a kick out of the jukebox. Perhaps next time I'll try the Chicago style hotdog. Standard Portillos fare, food-wise. The parking lot is a really, really, really tight squeeze. Service was pretty slow - it was not very busy but we waited what I think was too long for fast food. I also noticed that the people in line in front of us only got part of their order. The seating area looked clean but was kind of sticky. While your staff is always excellent, I've come to the realization that your food quality has failed. In the last week I have been by twice. Both times ordering an Italian beef w sweet peppers. The first time the Italian beef lacked flavor. I didn't mind this much as sometimes this may happen. Although uniformity in your product should be key. The second time I came by was about 5 days later. I ordered the exact same thing yet this time when I brought it home the Italian beef I bit into was nothing but fat. Each piece seem to be sliced from a fatty piece of meat in which I could not even bite through the sandwich. The resulting in all of the meat being fed to my dog. Portillo's has never disappointed me until today. I went to drive thru around 11:30 am (12-19-19). The first lady that took my order was delightful. But as soon as I approached the second window to pick up my order there was this lady that looked like she didn't want to bet there. This lady as soon as she opened the window looked as if she was annoyed to be doing her job. I wanted to add a large drink with my order. As I was talking she cut me off mid sentence to tell me what I ordered, and closed the window. I heard her talk to her manager that I wanted to order a drink as if it was a big deal.
