Woah baby! When Portillo's opened in Tucson in February of 2023, I knew they were busy, but I didn't realize what I was missing out on. Upon arriving on a Friday evening, I was surprised to see the exciting restaurant that is brightly themed from wall to wall was nearly empty. My friend and I wanted to try as many things as possible so we split the Italian Beef Sandwich, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, Broiled Chicken Sandwich, and Beef and Cheddar Croissant. Our conclusion: go with the beef. The chicken sandwiches were both mediocre but both of the others came loaded with juicy Italian beef that was unbelievably tender and savory. they would not allow me to pick up my Internet order at the drive-in window. I said that that wasn't right they said we're understaffed. So they made me go inside to get my food and it wasn't there. Do you think I could get somebody to walk up to their pick up window and help me? After long time to get the food I took it home and of course it was cold by then. I went to their Internet app to see if there was a review process and there was. I went through 10 minutes to 15 minutes of an interview. And the app locked up with a message that said we are unable to connect to our servers , check your Internet, there was nothing wrong with my Internet,and I wasn't able to complete the review process. Frustrated I went back to my email and they had sent a phone number to the restaurant in the email so I called them. After another interview process, I finally convinced their AI to connect me to a human being. The phone rang and rang and rang, and nobody ever answered it. Went to Portillo's with some friends, there were about 8 of us. They had a nice selection of hot dogs, burgers and salads. I opted for the Chicken Pecan and Bacon salad with a diet Coke. The salad was very nice, the chicken was tender and easy to cut, the honey peppercorn dressing was very yummy. The first stab at my diet coke turned out to be Dr Pepper - YUCK!! After returning it to the counter they replaced my drink quickly and I was able to enjoy the rest of my meal. After my meal I opted for a Chocolate Cake Shake. Very good, enjoyable, and fun. I had the Italian beef sandwich and it was yummy. Bread was good, beef was tasty, loved the in-house made sweet peppers on it. You have a choice of getting it sandwich fully dipped, the gravy (which is really au jus) on the side, or dry. An Italian beef sandwich is very similar to the French dip. The difference is that the thinly sliced beef is sauteed in the juices. So with that said, the reviews here complaining about the "soggy bread" really need to understand what they are ordering. That's the very nature of an Italian beef sandwich! First of all the beef is going to be juicy because it is cooked *in* the juices. The bread is *going to be* "soggy." If you don't want it soggy, order the gravy on the side. Or order it dry. The fries were good, not the best, but OK. My wife had an Original Italian Beef Bowl which is the sandwich without the bread. The (Chicago style) hot dog was pretty good. I enjoy a good Chicago dog. I would have this again. The slice of chocolate cake was OK. Nothing outstanding. Nothing bad. Just OK. The chocolate cake shake, however, was pretty good. Atmosphere is kind of loud. Didn't bother me, but it did my wife. I like the decor, it's pretty fun. By the way, this is a *Chicago* restaurant, not a *Tucson* restaurant so pronounce the two "L's" in "Portillo's." It's not pronounced like the two "L's" in "tortilla." English, not Español! I tried the #1 Big Italian Beef combo, and boy, it was huge. A lot of food for sure! I could not finish. The combo itself was approximately $15 and could definitely feed two people. The cashier recommended extra gravy for the sandwich and I loved it. While the bread was a bit soggy (most likely due to the fact that it was wrapped up), the Italian Beef was juicy and delicious with the peppers and overall flavor. There are also options for cooking the fries, and we went with the cashier's recommendation of getting well done fries and the Portillo sauce and cheese dipping combo. It was interesting, but I'm definitely more of a ketchup gal with my fries. The soda drinks are filled for you but I'm curious to know if refills are allowed and I'll have to ask next time. The interior was huge with neat decor creating a diner feel that transports you back in time. I love how spacious it is! Overall, this place is a yes in my book. I will definitely come back here. I recently got a buy one meal get another free coupon during an event at Reid Park Zoo. Very nice, my bf and I were super excited to try someplace new with a good deal. We ordered through the drive thru. Asked 3 times to make sure my sandwich didn't have cheese. It wasn't listed. But they still ended up putting cheese on it. Very unfortunate, I was bummed. We were already 25 minutes away.. I couldn't get the full Portillo Sandwich experience! :/ but was able to eat the few pieces of meat that didn't have cheese. The Italian beef was tasty. My bf liked his burger enough to go back during his work day recently. The sprite perfectly crisp like when you see it on the commercials haha The fries were typical crinkle cut but good!! I have heard so many good things about Portillo's over the years, and I'm now finally living in a city where I can give them a try. I showed up to their drive-thru about 1pm. There was a line outside and the inside looked equally packed. The drive -thru has two lanes for ordering and there were four attendants outside taking orders and issuing each car a number. All in all, I think it took me about 25 minutes to get into the queue and receive my food. They've only been open a week or so, but I'm sure the popularity of this place will take a while to die down. I wish I had more time to dine in so that I can try everything 'hot and fresh,' but I got a hot dog, fries with a side of cheese for dipping, and a chocolate cake shake. The fries were a little bit over-salted and the shake was a meal in itself, but I was definitely happy with everything I ordered. I am a huge fan of authentic Chicago dogs, so I'll need to come back for more and try all the other items on the menu. read more

Interesting place. Took a few minutes to figure out where to place our order (it's in the back). Order the roast beef sandwich with onion rings and a soda. Service was fairly quick however, the roast beef sandwich was soaking in water. The roast beef was relatively flavorless. First time coming and was disappointed. I had the hot dog and tried the beef sub roll that my friend got. The food tasted good. I liked the flavor. I didn't like how the bread got soggy so quickly that I didn't finish my hot dog cause it was just too mushy. Same with my friend beef sub. The fries were good. Nothing OMG about them. Another solid meal at Portillo's. Grabbed dinner with my son and we both got Italian beef sandwiches. He got a light dip and I went for extra gravy and hot peppers and we split a large order of well done fries to get them extra crunchy. As usual the staff was friendly and helpful. It's fun hearing them to the rhymes with the order numbers. "Number 29 it's time to dine!" Next time I'll probably go for dipped instead as I found the extra gravy made the sandwich a bit soggy for my preference. But we left feeling very satisfied. read more

I keep hearing people say 'I can get a hot dog anywhere' - folks, it's not about a HOT DOG. Although a CHICAGO dog is far better than a SONORAN dog! It's the JUICY HOT BEEF SANDWICHES! The ITALIAN SAUSAGE! Even though the burgers and chicken fingers are good, leave those menu items for the kids! Shakes are okay... I gave up sugar for lent so I only took a swig. My wife and I went to Portillo's for the first time yesterday, and both ordered their "Polish dog" (i.e., kielbasa at hot dog size). At age 84, we have lived in the New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angelos cities and areas, and have been treated with the best hot dogs available in America. Without hesitation we both agreed that their "Polish dog" was - by FAR and away - the best tasting and best cooked dog that we have EVER eaten. Finally made it to Portillos in Tucson. The food quality for what I had, a Chicago Beef & Sausage sandwich was as good as I could recall from my last visit to a Portillos in Chicago. This location was smaller than what I recall of the last Chicago area one I was in. The service was fast and friendly counter service. It was good not to see a gratuity screen after the payment screen, I guess they pay their folks OK. The inside was clean and very much like a Chicago location, they had different counters for different things. As far as I could tell this location had two counters. I ordered food for myself and my daughter and about making it home so that if we were missing our fries. I called the store and the guy told me that he'd relay this message to management and placed me on hold. After waiting on hold for almost 10 minutes the same guy got on the phone and said to please continue to hold that the manager named Ray would be with me shortly after dealing with other customers. He then placed me back on hold for almost another 10 minutes until someone picked up the phone and just hung it up without saying anything. Not impressed at all, $12.15 for a bacon burger and small fry, no drink. No pickles, who doesn't put pickles on a burger, it would've probably been better with pickles. I went through the drive-thru and there was only one car in front of me. It took about 5 minutes to get my food. The young lady taking orders in the drive thru recommended the burgers. There were seeds on the bun but I'm not sure what kind, it was sloppy. The bacon was decent but the fries were stale. Granted it took me about ten min to get home but I had closed the bag so they should've at least just been soggy but they were stale and very salty. No need for me to ever go back. What a disappointment. There's not a lot on the Portillo's menu that appeals to me, so I hadn't bothered going there. But I was out running errands, looked at the menu, and thought I'll give it a try. I ordered the Beef & Cheddar Croissant with a small order of fries and a small Coke. The fries were great, but you can get great fries almost anywhere. The Beef & Cheddar Croissant was like over priced Arby's. The croissant was like plain, soft white Wonder bread cooked in the shape of a croissant. You can get more authentic croissants at Walmart. The beef was BLAND and had no flavor whatsoever. It was also ICE COLD in the middle. I expected so much of the beef because it's supposedly one of the stars of their sandwich menu. As for the cheddar, WHAT cheddar? I could literally count the maybe 11-12 grated shreds of cheddar on the sandwich. This was $16 wasted and a really blah meal. It's sad that this "restaurant" replaced Claim Jumper. Never again. Love the garden veggie dogs here. I used to go out of my way for Chicago dogs and haven't bothered to try recreating it since going vegan. Portillo's really knocked it out if the park with these, especially with the smoke and texture of the veggie dog they chose. I am almost glad this is on the other side of town from me because I would be stopping by all the time otherwise.
