Scoop of joy
Lynn C.

We visited the store because our 7-year-old is very into rocks. They have great collections of all the beautiful rocks you could imagine. And very fairly priced even for a young kid who'd like to start his own collection. We eventually left with the purchase of a 'scoop of joy' for 10 dollars. Highly recommended to any young rock lovers.

I have been admiring this beautiful shop before it opened and have enjoyed watching it blossom since it opened. I went in there tonight and am so impressed with the all the beautiful amethyst pieces - they are decorative and functional. The pieces are truly stunning!! They are all mined responsibly. Amethyst is my birthstone so it's hard for me to resist buying amethyst everything in the shop. An enchanting store for lovers of rock specimens and rough and faceted gemstones. There a vast selection of lesser known gems, ones you rarely see in person, as well as more traditional quartz/amethyst geodes. I can't wait to try the cool crack-your-own-geode machine! You can easily find the perfect gift for someone special in the shop. There are plenty of options for just about everyone. Thank you so much Jason for your wonderful store! You are truly knowledgeable and friendly. I look forward to seeing it continue to grow and seeing your dream come true. Follow them on social media for everything frequent updates. Support and shop local!

Amazing shop, the owner is so friendly and willing to answer questions. My 6 year old got to crack open a geode and he loved it!

Great rock shop, chock full of everything from crystal displays, small specimens and jewelry to…read morelarge incredibly beautiful museum quality pieces. Cool Buddhist stone statues and such. Rough rock and mineral specimens or polished slabs, shapes and spheres. Very knowledgeable owner. I think you call first so she can open the door for you. Beautiful old building, street parking not bad at all. Kinda rough old industrial neighborhood with bridges and lots of homeless folks camping about. Nothing serious at all. I think open till 7pm. Been a rockhound for 65 years (seems shocking to my ears to hear that) and this is the only place I go.

So we called, we were told to show up, and to call again to enter as they lock the entrance. It's the other side of downtown, across the river, so it's pretty funky. But no problem! Expect street parking as well. Upon arrival, we called and waited outside, and less than 3 minutes later we entered. Its understandable that they let customers in this way as it's not the greatest of walkable neighborhoods. They've got a really great selection of rocks, crystals, and some fossils. I'm more into fossils than I am rocks/minerals. Pricing appears to be average to upper-average, but I'm not much of an expert as well tbh. I go for what looks 'pretty' and 'cool-looking' versus what's rare and cost more. "Amateurish" is the term for myself I guess lol! We did have good interactions with (I believe her name was) Taylor, who knew her stuff. Whatever we asked for, she knew where it was. I've been to about six other rock stores around Portland, but in comparison this place would be in the middle, about 4th best out of six, regarding what they have in stock. We'll be back someday.

This is very overdue review about ring sizes…read more In short: Gold Door has smaller sized rings--trays of them! If you're a 3.5, or a 4, or a 5, you should be able to find rings that fit you! Woo hoo!

The problem…read morearises when you try to speak with anyone there because there is an air of something that just makes you feel less than. Instead of knowledgeable people helping you, they only have room for one or two people at the front counter and they don't seem to know where the items come from. My wife presented me with a pendant that she was told to be Tibetan turquoise. However, after having other experts look at it, we couldn't confirm or deny whether or not it was actually dyed, so we had to return it. We switched it out for a different piece, but the person helping us at the counter, had no idea where it was from. She yelled across the counter to a guy in another part of the store asking where it was from, and without even coming over to look at it, he instantly said it was Tibetan turquoise! With that said, my trust in their pieces and quality are diminished. It's a very pretty place to stop and look at if you're a tourist and you can buy some nice crystals however I'm still concerned about this issue. The first picture is the original. The second set are the original pieces. We've spent several hundred dollars over the years but unfortunately, I think I will have to go elsewhere.
