Positive Pie seems a little out of place at first, but you soon realize most of the food spots in this town seem surprisingly similar to more urban offerings. We had take out, but the decor was nice and they appeared to have a selection of local beers on tap. My wife went with a veggie oriented option. The vegetables seemed chopped strangely to me (lots of dicing - so it was less attractive then it could of been), but she said it was delicious. She thought the walnuts was a surprisingly tasty addition. I had a meat-centric offering called The Carcus. It got devoured pretty quickly. Could of used a bit more flavour in the sauce, but I suspect they are favouring a neutral base because the red sauce goes in most of the pizzas. I would order again, but maybe add some chilli oil. You will encounter good thin crust pizza, with slices available or just order your own pie. They have a nice beer selection, including some local Vermont options, a bit bummed they had nothing from their neighbors Hill Farmstead on (though I realize at other times they will have them represented). The staff is friendly and helpful. And the setting/decor is bright and inviting. One area of improvement would be lowering prices a bit. Whether it is working class locals or tourists coming through, since rent is quite affordable in Hardwick, it would be nice to not put such a dent in ones wallet for pizza and a beer. read more

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Positive Pie has a friendly, modern atmosphere that is a good place to come watch a game. It is casual and the bar staff are very friendly. The service is generally good. So are the pizza and hamburgers. That is The Good. However, other than pizza and burgers, the menu could use a complete revamping, with better dishes, other than the shrimp scampi. Some items are a complete "abomination", in the words of a friend, like Gnocchi with black beans. That's The Bad. The Ugly is that they don't always do a good job executing the dishes. Twice, my meat has been undercooked, including a burger which was raw in the middle. Once, they dumped practically an entire jar full of capers into my chicken dish. That's The Ugly. Positive Pie is an okay place, but whether you like it or not depends on whether you experience The Good, The Bad or The Ugly. Edited to add: This location is temporarily closed because there was a fire. I knew their execution was poor, but this is the extreme. Just ate at Positive Pie in Hardwick, VT the other day. Good as always!! I got a great gluten free pizza, anchovies/peppers/mushrooms, ate half and had the second half for lunch the next day. Pretty solid place for the middle of Hardwick, Vermont. Fantastic ambiance. The food was much better than expected (even tasty) and they had a decent selection of semi-local beers and ciders. We got the sweet potato and parsnip bisque along with the poutine (both of which were excellent) and finished with the fantastic pi con salsiccia. Great pizza place with the perfect atmosphere for a chilly Vermont night. Pretty much everyone in my group opted to for their own small pizza and everything looked great! I ordered spinach, mushroom, and bacon on mine. It's thin crust style (which in my opinion is the best) and it was nice and crispy. Their bar looked like a pretty chill place to hang out and they had awesome local beers on tap. I went for the 14th star maple stout and it was yummy! Subsequent visits resulted in pies with stingy toppings, insufficient cheese, undercooked, and high prices. I will pay a fair price for extra toppings, but got tired of being surprised by the paucity of ordered things on top of the cheese. I suspect owners were admonishing their cooks to "cut costs." Which is profoundly stupid because that just results in angry former customers. Servers are fine. Parker Pie in West Glover is much better although even pricier and they don't scrimp on toppings...they just charge a lot for them. I prefer quality and will pay for it, but when I feel I am overpaying while being shortchanged, well, Positive has become a Negative. read more

I found this place while I was staying in the area. I stopped in twice. Lunch & dinner on two different days. Lunch was great. They have two slices plus soda special for $6.00 at the bar. I had buffalo chicken and broccoli pesto slices. Very good and nice size slices. Bartender was very nice. Space had a lot of customers for a weekday and quite a few people came in for to-go orders. Dinner was also good! The place was packed and it was Sunday night. We got seated right away, friendly staff and nice menu. The gnocchi was excellent and unusual. I saw a previous post say the gnocchi was bad but I disagree. The beans meshed well and the pesto was just perfect. We also had the hanger steak and it was delish. Only comment is the chimichurri sauce is not what we expected, it looked and tasted more like a tomato sauce, but good either way. They also have wifi and a good beer selection. Put in an online order at 4pm to be picked up at 5:30. We arrived at 5:30 to be told the order wasn't ready yet. After waiting another 45 minutes, they handed us the 5 pizzas, all of which were room temperature. After we got home, we realized several were missing toppings, and one had several slices without even cheese. The garlic knots were raw, and the half the pizzas were burnt. This was literally the WORST experience I've ever had at a restaurant. My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner. I literally created this Yelp account just to write a review of it. Here's why: -We walked in, hostess didn't even smile or acknowledge us in any way. Just a blank stare and a pissy look on her face. I had to say 'hi....can we have a table for 2?', to which she just grabbed a couple menus and sat us, saying nothing. Not even a smile. She was extremely unpleasant. -Even tho the place was empty, it took the waitress about 10 minutes before showing up to our table. Just like the hostess, she was very unfriendly and rude. -We ordered an appetizer (garlic knots) and it never showed up. We sat there hungry for a good 20 minutes. -Waitress finally brings us our pizzas (2 10 inch personal pizzas). She places mine down in front of me, and there is a giant long HAIR on it. I tell her, "There's a hair on my pizza", she looked annoyed and said "Do you want it or should I get you another one?" Like seriously? -We remind her about the garlic knots. She had no idea what we were talking about. She half-apologized and said she'd get them for us. -I sat there starving while my husband ate his pizza. She finally brings us the 'garlic knots', which were literally Pilsbury dinner biscuits with garlic butter on top. The plates she gave us were dirty and had spots on them. The 'knots' were overcooked and absolutely disgusting. We didn't even finish them. -After she brings me my pizza (which was not even very good), she told us it was on the house because of there being a hair on it. We get the bill: 1 small pizza, 2 glasses of wine and an appetizer of crappy garlic knots = $40.00. Seriously? 40 bucks for that? -We go to pay and the hostess is still unpleasant and miserable, doesn't even smile or tell us to have a good night or anything. My husband and I are not the type of people who complain at restaurants, we treat people in the service industry well and have great respect for them. This place tho, it was seriously the worst restaurant experience I have ever had in my life. Beware of this place!!! Horrible service and disgusting food. Truly awful in every way. read more

Highly recommended! Seriously upped their pizza game this year. We've been going to Positive Pie in Hardwick in the summers since they opened years ago, and it's always served a reliably good, if not spectacular, pizza. But this summer (2020) they've significantly improved. We ordered 'Carcass' and 'Vermonter' pies and we all agreed they were excellent, noticeably better than the 'decent pizzas' in years past. I'm totally baffled that Hardwick Cafe or the Scale house get better reviews as I find Positive Pie to be consistent, delicious,and a good value. A great place for upscale date night or a big crew after the baseball game. The shrimp scampi is delicious and pairs well with each of the well chosen red wines on the menu and I've heard their burgers are always cooked to order. The calzones are big enough for two people or meals, and I'm a healthy eater. The pizzas are great, especially the BBQ, with chicken, red onion, and blue cheese crumbles. The basil, balsamic, artichoke combo is also nice. Their specials make everything more affordable, especially the Monday pizza deal. If you're dining in, ask for Amy, you'll be well cared for. read more

My family and I ordered take out and the food was great. Then we went to the restaurant and had a later dinner. There were 6 adults and 4 kids. A decent bunch. We didn't wait long to get seated so that was great. Service was decent and patient with us but we waited a long time for our food. Not to say this is bad. But I'm not sure if the kitchen was prepared for the 7 orders of dinner dishes. We even ordered apps . I felt like it was long. Don't let this make you turn away because the food was really good. Sat at the end of the bar and ordered an appetizer to go with my beer after seeing the special advertised on their chalkboard "Appy Hour: Half price appetizers with purchase of beer, wine or cocktail." Service was mediocre, but it's VT...Tab came and appetizer was not discounted. Hostess/manager? explained a "dinner" needs to be bought for that promotion. Thats not whats written on the board or on their website under "weekly specials". She didn't try to resolve the situation. Handled very very poorly. Classic bait and switch. And what's dinner at PP? Burger? Fish and Chips? A large pie split by 2ppl? 1 personal size pie? Not clear. Very disappointed in the experience. Ive visited the Montpelier location multiple times on business and received great service, but now I will rethink visiting this entire chain. read more

To be fair, the pizza is phenomenal. I have had it a few times and really love it. BUT I will probably only do takeout in the future. The music was jarring. I am not sure if the owners are allowing the waitstaff to choose the music or what, but If so, I do not think that is a good idea. Today I ate pizza with my family to what sounded like a mixture of heavy metal and highschool pop. It was turned way up. It was horrible for the restaurant atmosphere and could only be enjoyed by a small audience. It gave me a headache. When I told the waitress how I felt, she said she would turn it down (i was hoping she may change the music to something calmer) and almost seemed a little offended. And I had to remind her to turn it down. I would have hoped she would have wanted to create a better environment for her customers to eat in. Last complaint, we ordered 1/2 of our pizza with peppers and mushrooms and they truly skimped us. I mean seriously, it looked like they gave us one small crimini mushroom chopped up finely. It was like having no mushroom. Same as the red pepper. Almost zero. Surely they can afford to give me a normal amount of the said toppings...it was strange how little they gave us. Pizza is good though as i said above, and even though our waitress wasn't my favorite, I gave her a 40% tip because I know what it feels like to be paid poorly as a waitress. read more

I'm really surprised this place doesn't get stronger reviews. They do well enough on Yelp, but not nearly as well as they actually are. Five stars all the way. Great selection of local craft beers on tap and you can get most of them on an 8 oz pour so you can sample more. My husband enjoyed tasting some great local VT brews we can't get in MA. I'm more of a wine drinker and was very happy with their wine list. We shared a large pizza - half BLT half spicy sausage. Love that they will do half and half and while it's not unusual for a restaurant to do this, I was floored by how precisely they managed to halve it. Especially since one side was white sauce while the other was red. Usually toppings are lopping over to the other half, but this was incredibly well prepared. Not only that, but it was a hell of a good pie. Thin crust, loved the toppings, couldn't believe we polished the entire thing. And we're from just outside NYC originally, so we're not easily impressed with other states' version of pizza. If you're in the mood for great beer and pizza, come here. I am enjoying the rural Vermont atmosphere on vacation and my aunt suggested that we wander down to Hardwick to go to the Farmers Market (a very happening place, actually) and eat lunch at Positive Pie. As we walked up it looked like a small and cutesy bar/Restaurant. I was impressed by the amount of liqueurs on the bar side. There was no one near the hostess table when we walked in but someone saw us after thirty seconds and came over. My first main impression was wood and noise, it was oddly loud, like you have to almost shout to your table buddies to be heard. Which was odd since there was only like ten to fifteen people in the whole place. The waitress was very attentive and polite, I had a bourbon root beer cocktail which was very good. Probably not worth the price (which I was surprised at, little VT town, c'mon) but their food was very good. I got a pulled pork sandwich with fries. It was terrific, not greasy or anything and the bun was made there so kudos to them. Along with handmade fries. The only real problem I had was the music, there was house/dance music playing the whole time. Pretty loudly, which contributed to the whole loud atmosphere. I don't mind one or two songs, that would have been funny, but the whole time? I felt like there should have been gogo dancers on the bar. Very crowded because of the NHL playoffs and live music. Salad and pizza were fine so was the service. Since there are few choices to eat out for dinner in Hardwick, it is an acceptable place. I would have rated it higher BUT, they do not comp the live band members their two drinks and then subtract the price of the two beers from the agreed amount of paltry pay. So that means the band is left with very little ($50)....I call that unfair and taking advantage of people. Just how much could two beers be costing them especially since they are raking it in at the VERY crowded bar? If I behave in an ethical manner I expect others to do so...more important than farm fresh food is how people are treated. read more

Probably the best food for a 45 mile radius. I've never come here and had a bad meal. But I've also never come here and gotten service in less than an hour. Super duper slow kitchen service. They make up for it with great food but don't come here if you're in a rush. Takes an hour to get a pizza. read more
