Came here to try out a couple of Tapas as we were bar & restaurant hopping around, however, when we arrived, 2 things that we were looking for were no longer on the menu. Part of the frequently changing menu, which I get, so we opted for two other items and of course, a round or two of cocktails. Located right next door to Takashi's, which has a long wait and is a top sushi spot, Post Office lends itself as the layover while you wait, but you could just stay the entire time. Our hostess was cool and raved about the menu and even checked in on us throughout the experience to see if we enjoyed the new menu items. As for tapas, we had Karaage (Korean fried chicken), & Beef Haru Mak1 ( spring roll) . The egg dipping sauce was really good and our server was very detail-oriented and engaged. Came on a Thursday night and it was pretty busy but still a few bar seats available and in the front. Think lots of people were waiting for dinner seats next door, so a good amount of turnover. DJ was a good vibe but a little loud for conversation. Service was a little rough to start - the hostess didn't greet me and I wasn't sure if I could grab an open seat or what. Waited forever to get menus, then forever to order (and I was hungry). Once we were settled and orders were in though, we were smooth sailing. Dishes I ordered were way more generous than I thought they'd be. Got the taro scotch egg, southeast tiradito, and red fish wings (fins & collar) - all super flavorful and satisfying, would absolutely order again. It's right next to Takashi restaurant, hard to distinguish as the signs are not obvious especially in the dark. But each have their own main entrances. Smaller than I expected, cute decor and ambiance. The bar area has an appetizer menu but no meals and offers a unique Japanese inspired cocktail menu. $8 for one slider and $9 for a small hand roll is a bit hefty but I'd come back for the drinks. My favorites were the Tokishirazu for the buttery salmon, the Uni for the incredible flavors and textures, and Moqueca for the rich and creamy broth. I can't believe that in my entire time in Salt Lake, I've never been here until recently! We stopped by to have drinks and apps while waiting for our seat next door at Takashi, and had such a lovely experience. We ordered a ceviche starter, a good pho you cocktail (amazing btw), and a full service martini. My martini came with a sidecar which was a first for me! This place has been on my Yelp dining list for a while and happy to finally check this off. I found out later at the restaurant that it's the sister company of Takeshi. It's been a while since I've been to Takashi, but I didn't care for the sushi. I felt it was a bit overrated with its awards and it's not the best sushi in SLC. I felt the food lacked flavor, however it was beautifully plated! The scotch eggs were probably my favorite since it was cooked perfectly. The sauce had a weird after taste to it. I didn't like their version of beef tartare. I needed more salt and the yolk was missing. The little pieces of bread was the star of the dish and yes we asked for more of those. Birria dumplings felt undercooked because the wonton wrapper was still a little chewy. Pickled veggies were too vinegary! read more

Forgot to take photos I was too busy eating, drinking, laughing, and licking my fingers. No clue how I hadn't tried this spot before now. It was spectacular. The "Asian fusion" was so spot on. I was full but made myself make room because everything was so ridiculously delicious. It's a smaller place, so if you're lucky enough to get a spot, or you think ahead and make a reservation, you HAVE to make it count. I've eaten foods from various cuisines my entire life and this is one spot I am tempted to gate-keep just to make sure I can always get in! (Don't worry, I won't.) The butter chicken wings were such a surprise. They were hot and stayed hot, right amount of spice, amazing flavor, and the skin stayed so crispy! I thought I made the best Brussels sprouts, but theirs blew me out of the water. We tried so many other plates I can't even keep them straight. But each one made my tummy feel so cozy and happy without making me feel heavy or greasy. Even if it's hot outside, don't skip the dumplings. They will make you feel like you're a little kid again, home "sick" from school, watching the price is right with your grandma. They are so comforting you'll want to cry even if you're not emotional. Same goes for their homemade Chicharrones, the scallop and pork belly skewers, their house made pickled veggies, any of the sliders, and their desserts that all taste like someone has been in the kitchen all day preparing them perfectly with love. I wish I had photos to share, everything was just too delicious to You can't really go wrong with Lake Effect. No matter the day or time, if they're open you'll be taken care of. Even their "late night" menu is well prepared and delicious. (I'll admit I would pay big money to have one of their amazing charcuterie boards on the late night menu...but I'll survive.) They have tall ceilings, a long bar, and a couple of booths. The food menu is superb because they are owned by their neighbor Takashi. Love the vibes here and it's such a cool place to hang out next door to Takashi. The Japanese whisky menu intrigued us and we were excited to try. I didn't love my mezcal cocktail but I'll try something else next time. I only skipped a star because the food was just a touch odd. We started with a few apps. I've never met a brussels sprouts plate I didn't like but the crispy brussels sprouts with fish caramel and sesame seeds were so blackened that I couldn't really get past the burned-to-a-crisp taste. The panisse (fried garbanzo cakes) were interesting and probably my favorite, but again the saffron rouille and thai basil oil to dip it in was just short of wow for me. The happy hour sliders are super intriguing so we tried the chicken katsu (just okay - and again, I've never met a katsu I didn't like), and the spam, which was really good but the bread & butter pickled ginger and miso-aioli was a little lost in the overall flavors. I wish the flavor and execution was amped up a little more on everything. The service was great and you can just pick an open seat. They will scan your IDs when you walk in. The ambiance is neither casual nor upscale. I'm not quite sure what the theme was, including the foods we ordered. Tried plenty of small bites. The tuna tartare isn't what you normally think of, it had maybe some type of Thai curry and came on top of one tortilla chip. Not bad, just different. The birria dumplings weren't great. The meat inside is dry, so definitely cut them open and try to get the sauce mixed in. Tried 3 different sliders. The spam slider was the best. The "chicken meatball" one was interesting. The "fried chicken" slider was dry, the slaw helped, but otherwise just okay. They're 21 and over and do not take reservations. They follow current CDC COVID-19 guidelines, considering the state of Utah has just lifted the mask mandates, and I completely appreciate this. We are still in the middle of a pandemic, BTW. Anyway, my work group and I enjoyed this spot we came back within a week's time. We really enjoy their cocktails, in fact I turned the guys on to the Mizuwari #5: Suntory Toki Japanese Whiskey, apple Sidra soda and sage. A very refreshing cocktail, it was so good, I had about a handful one night. O_O They also have a pretty substantial food menu that comes from Takashi next door. Sushi is on point, I requested Omakase Nigiri and it did not disappoint. However I was less than impressed with the chicken bowl. The chicken was dry and quite tough, I'll just stick with their sushi menu next time around. I also want to give honorable mention to Lee, she was our server and was phenomenal! One of my favorite bars! If you're looking a for a unique experience, Post Office Place is such a lovely space to visit. Haha I love how every time I visit, the same hostess gal has a different book at her stand. - Just a little note about some of the subtle charms about Post Office Place and the people who work there. The Japanese Peruvian drinks are a bit daunting to try and figure out, but just have a chat with your waitress or bartender about what you might like and they will have great suggestions for you! Knocking off one star because some of the portion sizes for tapas such as the tuna tartar are absurdly small however it is definitely reasonable for the price. The tuna tartar is SO good! So I recommend getting 2 or 3 orders of it. You'll probably want to order a handful of items. I don't mind paying a bit more for their tapas if only the portions were bigger. The California roll is probably the most filling item on the menu. The waitresses will give you a good idea of the portion sizes. Everything I have tried on their menu is absolutely delicious. It is an excellent bar with really tasty tapas. Not really a place for a hearty dinner, but the great thing is that Takashi is just right next door! Went here for the first time with friends this week and it was immediately delightful. The inside is tasteful and upscale. The service was great all night. We each ordered a cocktail. I got the 'Spice Must Flow' and my girlfriend ordered the 'Hibiscus Pisco Sour'. We both enjoyed our cocktails. Later on, I ordered a draft IPA that was also stellar. Between the 4 of us we split 2 orders of brussel sprouts (the standout for sure), jackfruit sliders, burrata, panisse, and king trumpet ceviche. Aside from the brussel sprouts which were fire, the burrata was also delicious. I didn't care for the other dishes as much, but others enjoyed them. Street parking was readily available and the bathrooms were very clean. Overall, highly recommend this establishment. Though a very intimate space, bar service and high tops were readily available, along with few delightful booths that could sit two spaciously, or a cozy three to four. Service was perfect. Friendly and attentive, but cool and noninvasive. Any manner of fine beverage could be yours at Post Office Place. We tried their passionfruity spin on a Pisco sour, a fine cab selection, and a most satisfying highball (local joint Bar Nohm is also doing fine things with their highball, FYI). Oh, and a ritzy pour of fine, fine Japanese whiskey, of which they have a generous selection. Boozehounds will purr. As for grub, the katsu sliders were delicious and will likely please most palates. But where they got super shiny was the beef tartare, the birria dumplings, and the grilled romaine salad. As a tartare aficionado, I thought I'd exhausted all permutations, but damnit Janet, African pumpkin sauce, with Nigerian rice masa cakes, and the most succulent beef, seasoned perfectly? Went to Post Office Place a few times before COVID, and it was a great experience. Went again post COVID, and I feel like it was even better than the times before! The service was above and beyond amazing, with many recommendations given to us (each all delicious). We had a mixture of dishes from Post Office Place as well as sushi/sashimi from Takashi. Calamari, seared sable fish, uni, arctic char, and many others. I have taken a bunch of photos over the times I have visited and not only are the dishes delicious, they are absolutely beautiful as well. In addition to tasty bites, the cocktails are out of this world. The bartender will even create unique beverages if you are wanting to try something new and not on the menu. I love doing this at bars when they have it as an option, and POP did not disappoint. This is a spot I will visit time and time again, and highly doubt I will ever be let down. read more

I loved Kristauf's when it was in this location, and was sad to see it go... but Post Office Place is perfect addition to this area! Prices are very reasonable for drinks, and the names and specials always seem to be changing, which is good and bad (bad mainly only if you fell in love with a certain drink). On top of cocktails, they also have a little menu for food. However, I didn't look at the food options... I was there for the drinks! When I stopped in, there was a drink named "Passions of Santos" which had almost everything I wanted in a drink, and drink name (if you're a Jane the Virgin person!), but there was egg in it. So I had my drinking companion get that so I could at least sit near it, because anything pertaining to Rogelio De la Vega? I need it, alas vicariously. I went with a Paloma. Which was tasty, with a kiss of hibiscus. This is a cute little bar to stop in, especially if you're waiting for Takashi next door, or just starting the evening. Some dishes are amazing and some are misses. We went with friends so got to try a good number of dishes. Amazing and outstanding category are the scallop and pork belly and sweetbread. Great was lamb and clam panzanella, fried Brussels sprouts, taro scotch eggs, which essentially is a fried taro ball typical in southern China with an egg inside. It was cooked with perfect technique. Fine: octopus salad. It was not executed as well as it could. I'd sliced the veg and octopus sideways and cook the beans longer. Disappointing: tuna tartar seasoning was off and the conceptual design of the vegan porridge was off-base. We hardly ate the dishes. Have been here multiple times a year since they opened. Great cocktails, great place to hang out if you're waiting for a table at Takashi, and probably our favorite burger/slider of all time. Unfortunately during our most recent visit, the host gave us a hard time because I provided a federally-issued DOD/military ID. I have used it at Post Office Place before and multiple bars in Salt Lake City without issue (whenever I forget my driver's license). The host asked me if I was in the military (I'm not, I'm a military spouse) and had to check with the manager. When the manager said they do accept military IDs, she responded with "but she's a dependent" as if for some reason that made my ID invalid??? We really loved this place and were happy to see one of our frequent spots get a James Beard nomination but the host's attitude and lack of knowledge really ruined it for us. :( read more

That's a recipe for a successful spot. While you could come here and get full, for sure, it's more of a spot where you go to grab drinks and small plates before or after the main course somewhere else. The ambiance is for sure very hip (but decidely not hipster) while still being chic. The lights are lowered a little, and although the music was a touch too loud for my tastes, we were still able to have a nice conversation on our table for six. As the lineage is from Takashi, you can bet they handle fish with care, and there's plenty of it on the menu. The cocktail menu is pretty simple but not terribly so; there's enough variety to go around that you're going to find something to try to fit your taste buds. The restaurant atmosphere is modern / trendy. The music is a bit loud for the room, but no worries. The bar is great but would say it is about 1/3 the size of the restaurant. You seat yourself and there are a few booths and some high tops, but there is also a lot of communal seating. So 5 stars for the staff. They were all prompt, courteous, and cheerful! Simply delightful. For the food, I really wanted to love it, but it missed the mark for me. Perhaps I chose the wrong tapas. Anyway, I had some happy hour dishes that were very reasonably priced. The seaweed salad was great and the pork belly lettuce wrap was delicious. The oysters, not so great. They were extremely small, three oysters didn't even make up enough meat for one normal size oyster. Sadly, I didn't ask what varietal they were but in my opinion they needed to spend some more time in the sea to grow a little. Pictured is the beef tongue and that was a winner for me. Cooked perfectly, not chewy, and seasoned nicely. I enjoyed every piece. Unfortunately the next picture is the octopus, which was bland, chewy, and to be quite frank a rip off. For $12 I received probably less than 1/8 of a tentacle that was sliced into rounds. One piece of octopus sushi has more to it. To be fair, I did not express my discontent with the food, so the staff did not have an opportunity to make it right. I left unimpressed. The prices do not command the quality you receive.
