Honestly, what an incredible experience. Monte absolutely deserves the 10/10 from us. The food was amazing, but what really stood out to me was how much thought and passion went into the entire experience. Every single dish had its own vibe and personality. Nothing felt random or like it was just put on a plate to look pretty. The flavors worked together so beautifully, and every course had something that made us stop and talk about it. I also loved hearing the stories behind the dishes. The chef incorporates ingredients and products from local Utah businesses and producers, which I thought was such a special touch. It made the food feel connected to Utah while still being incredibly creative and elevated. You can genuinely tell how much the chef loves what he does. There is so much passion behind the food, and that really comes through in every course. It's one thing to eat beautifully prepared food, but it's another thing to feel the creativity and heart behind it. And the service was just spectacular. Our server was so knowledgeable and genuinely excited to talk to us about the restaurant, the chef, and each dish. You could tell they weren't just reciting information--they really believed in what Monte is doing and were excited to share it with us. That made the experience feel so much more personal. We've been lucky enough to experience other Michelin-starred restaurants, and Monte definitely holds its own. I'm so happy Utah finally has a Michelin-starred restaurant, and even happier that we got to experience it. Such a beautiful, creative, thoughtful meal from start to finish. A beautiful space and absolutely wonderful dining experience. The menu is rooted in Utah's landscape. We tried the Short Menu. My favorite dish was Walking through the Forest, which included maitake, hummus, leek; and the PASTA Rabbit Ravioli-Lemongrass Sauce! Jake was a wonderful bartender and waiter. Karen and Fer took very good care of us as our hostess and servers. And of course, special thanks for Chef Martín Babis for preparing such a unique spread of dishes. Everything was absolutely delicious! The drink menu features a generous variety of wine, mocktails, and cocktails. We tried two of the mocktails and were very impressed with layers of flavors. While visiting Salt Lake City from out of town, we treated ourselves to a fancy dinner at Monte, a restaurant that is rumored to be angling for a Michelin star. From the description on their website about a "chef-driven" experience, I thought it would be a chef's table, but in actuality it was a pre fixe menu, as we never talked to chef Martin Babio, although our server told us about each course. Online reviews are mixed, so we were a little concerned to be the only customers on a Thursday if it really were a simultaneous seating event (another couple came in 45 minutes later). TL;DR: It was worth the money. Drinks: rose lemonade (from a bottle, but the best lemonade hubby says he's ever had), a glass of brut to celebrate the publication of my book next week, and the house still (tap) water. The "snack" (hors oeuvre) was two bites. One was the best thing hubby has ever eaten that was made out of beets (which he doesn't usually like). The other was a light green puree with trout roe that made me exclaim out loud. Then we got three kinds of bread (breadsticks, sourdough, brioche) but didn't want to fill up on it. What we didn't eat was packaged it up for breakfast and lunch the next day. The brioche was realllly good, especially with the house-made butter (even the next day--the sourdough didn't keep well). I didn't finish the take on French onion soup, because I didn't think the onions were caramelized enough; however, hubby prefers his onions less cooked and liked it. The quail ravioli came in a sauce that didn't have enough salt, but it was balanced if eaten with the pasta. Next, the "black course" was a two-bite squid ink beignet with rabbit in the center. The protein was a really excellent 3 ounces of beef with two sauces. Then came a palate cleanser that was the best tasting "green drink" we've ever had (mint, lime, cucumber, and some other things). Between that and the dessert--the silkiest chocolate tart imaginable--the dinner was worth it. The last chef's table we did (for Valentine's Day) had portions that were too large. These were just right (although I did have to take my bonus madeleine home, since I was full by that point). Staff are attentive but let you enjoy the meal. The setting is industrial with a side of woodsman-naturalist. The music was loud but fun. My only real critique is that the restaurant is located inside Beehive Distillery, so when we arrived via Google Maps, we thought we were at the wrong building, and I had to double-check the address. Otherwise, 5 stars, would do again for a fancy occasion. read more

Came here on a weekend trip and had a lovely experience! The wait staff were kind and accommodating, the cocktails were delicious, and the food was amazing! It is of course on the pricey side but very fun for a splurge night. It's in an interesting location but the interior looks great and the spacing of tables gives a sense of privacy. I give monte a 2 for food and a 5 for service...this is how I ended up with a 3. It's been awhile since I ate there (Jan 26). but I do remember some sort of pastry stuffed with rabbit, the Wagyu, and the start with 2 small bites - one with beet and another small bite dish with fish eggs (salmon?). Not much flavor to the beets. I remember the salmon being really salty and very fishy. Those are in my pictures. I have had this type of appetizer at another Michelin star restaurant, and that was the most amazing experience...this was not. Initially I thought I must just not like those fish eggs, but when I tried it again at a different restaurant it was simply amazing. The presentation of the food gets high ratings but the flavor didn't match. The rabbit pastry was fine, but I didn't not taste any meat. It was minced up with cheese and other ingredients so no way to tell what that tasted like. I think I'm just not a Wagyu person, but I am also not a lamb person and that was the only other offering for meat. We paid 100 extra for Wagyu. Our total bill with 1 drink each and upgrade to Wagyu was over $700 after tip. I really did not see anything special about the food, and when I saw this restaurant made a Michelin star I was absolutely dumbfounded. I was similarly shocked when I did not see Table X with a star and not even a mention?!! What happened here? Table X is the best restaurant in town, and if offers a similar experience as Monte with the tasting menu and wine pairing. Wanted to love Monte and disappointed to have to post a less than stellar review for them. read more

Emailed the chef/restaurant a week before making reservation. I'm allergic to mushrooms. The chef assured me that there would be no mushrooms on the short menu. I book. I arrive. The menu has two mushroom items. Apparently they forgot truffles are mushrooms and keep trying to upsell me on them as well. After a conversation, they assure me they can make dishes without mushrooms. Wonderful. I order the wine pairing to go with the meal. In this conversation I ask them multiple times if I should leave. They ask me: "how bad are your allergies?" I explain I can't eat mushrooms- but I do have an epi pen. I have the first drink and appetizer. They bring out the bread (which is a course on their menu). It's been an hour. They pour my second glass, but as my dish for it hasn't arrived, I don't partake of it. The waiter comes back (its now after 9 pm) and tells me they can't accommodate me due to my allergies. Can I please pay $70 for the wine tasting and leave? The wine tasting you didn't serve me? Yes, its Utah state law. I look up the law. It's not. They charge me for the two glasses they have poured - the second which I never took a sip from. They somehow changed their version of what the law is? Very disappointed. Its a good thing my hotel was still serving food. I skipped lunch to come to this place. High expectations going in. Greeted by protestors outside protesting Foie gras which was not on the menu. Didn't get that at all. Service staff were kind and very attentive. Started out with a snack with included a beets salad (tiny) and a tuna snack. The beets one was good. Bread was sour dough and a few other choices. Nothing mind blowing. Soup was an onion truffle which was ok. The white truffle was $150 more which I don't think would have enhanced this dish. Quail pasta in broth was ok. The rabbit aioli was fine. We substituted the lamb for the wagyu. Our friends said the lamb was quite gamey. Wagyu was fine but again not worth the additional $100 each. Dessert was mediocre. I did enjoy the madeleine at the end. Overall bill was north of $600 with one glass of brut. Very expensive for an average meal. Again appreciate the staff and the wine pairing our friend had he stated was good. Food was not worth the price. read more

Over the past 36 years, my wife and I have dined at Michelin star restaurants throughout Europe and Asia. We have also dined at all of the fine dining restaurants in Utah, including Log Haven, Urban Hill, Table X, Glitretind, Goldener Hirsch, Bambara, etc. No high end restaurant in Utah is even close to being in the same league as Monte. They are in a class of their own relative to fine dining establishments in Utah. They are also clearly the only restaurant of Michelin star caliber in Utah. We have dined at Monte on three separate occasions. The service is very attentive and professional. The atmosphere is intimate and comfortable. The presentation of each dish is artful and creative. The food quality is excellent. If you are looking for a memorable and extraordinary dining experience in Utah, don't hesitate to visit this wonderful restaurant! read more

We were really excited to try this tasing menu based on photos and hype. The atmosphere was nice but food flavors didn't live up to hype. The 8 courses had nice presentation, but overall not worth the money. They charge $10 for water just for water alone. I needed it just to get through the charcoal flavored dish. Restaurant is beautiful, operated by people who care about art, comfort and making sure guests feel welcome. Tasting menu format executed precisely. Flavors layered and balanced, presentations simple and refined. Food was fun and interesting, loved seeing sweetbreads on a menu, excellent! Brioche was lovely, airy and not too eggy. The ravioli and lemongrass sauce, refreshing, light and savory as well as nice balance in acidity. Charred heirloom tomatoes, just barely cooked with smoky and citrusy tones, even if you don't like tomatoes, it's a winner. There's a lot to unpack, but suffice to say there is nobody doing better food than Monte in Utah right now.. Service is thoughtful and friendly, our server Aaron was excellent!
