I am so glad I decided to try Toro yesterday. I reserved a table for 5 at 5 pm pn a Friday inside by a window through their site. No charge for reserving. From the moment you approach the restaurant- Not even walk in- you are greeted by a professional and hospitable staff. In the front 2 young workers gave us sangria samples and helped take my photo. So smiley and kind. Then I checked into my table at the host stand. Our table was in a gorgeous lit room by the stairs. The inside was so breathtakingly beautiful and clean . The restrooms as well. Our server Omar quickly filled our drink cups with cold water and took our actual drink order. They have premium lemomades and also fountain drinks with free refills. When he returned he gave us great recommendations from their 8 dollar tapas menu on happy hour (M-F 3-6). We ordered 3: Tacos de Cochinita Pibil / Slow cooked pork marinated in achiote sauce . Calamares Fritos / Fried steak calamari w/ alioli sauce ... Albondigas / Five Spanish pork meatballs marinated in wine tomato sauce with bread .... The bread with the meatballs should be toasted and it was cold. The calamari were AMAZING. Not chewy at all. And tacos unique and flavorful. It took a while to decide but with Omar's guidance and a lot of research beforehand, I reccomend large parties order these to get the best tasting experience: Parrillada Española / Spanish grilled feast with morcilla, 4oz Spanish sirloin, chistorra, three fried jumbo shrimp, and poached potatoes with alioli Toro Paella / Toro's Classic recipe voted best in San Antonio! Jumbo shrimp, mussels, chicken, calamari, pork belly & spanish chorizo . The grilled platter came out first very fast and the meats were delectable. Love the sausage. Again... toast the bread but everything else was delicious. The paella didn't take long at all. It lived up to our expectations. Delicious and hot, enough to fill us up with whatever room was left. The nicest part was Omar brought us complimentary shots of some sort of strawberry cocktail with a chili rim. He was so thoughtful and brought my sister who was 12 a non alcoholic version. We cheered to a good time. It was so good!!! Then we asked for dessert recommendations. Omar suggested the Torrijas / Classic spanish dessert, bread soaked in sweet cream, fried & drizzled in honey .. so that's what we got. It was SO yummy like tres leches French toast. With their website you get a 30 dollar off first visit coupon using the inkind app. I signed up and it worked perfectly. After the discount all that food came out to $150. Insane for a party of 5. I tipped 30 and using that inkind app got 30 dollars cash back to use anywhere on the app. But ill use it here. Come to TORO for a great time. Linger. Talk. Enjoy unique flavors. The family after us received food and drinks while our waitress who was supposed to attend to our table just stood around and acted as if she didn't notice us trying to wave her down. I know this part is outside of their control, but parking is absolutely difficult. The mall changed the closest parking to the Restuarant to paid parking. So just a heads up if you're visiting this location. Service definitely needed improvement as the waitress completely inattentive and only saw her twice during my time there. I saw a couple of other patrons just as irritated waiting and looking around for her too. When ordering I asked if the stock they used contained shrimp in it due to an allergy at the table. She continued to recommend every dish that contained shrimp rather than answer about the stock- even after being told about the allergy. Finally got my answer after pointing directly to the menu mentioning the seafood stock. Food was okay. Waited a bit longer but reasonably so due to the allergy and food prep. When the server came she asked if we needed more water- which we did. We waited the entire service for that refill, again nowhere to be seen. We were done with our food for about 30 minutes till she finally checked up on us, with the bill. The restaurant added an automatic gratuity of 20% mind you the restaurant policy was only for parties of 6 or more. Like it made me question the service at this location if they're getting tips but not delivering in service. Definitely wouldn't recommend this location. read more

My family of 4 came here for an early Sunday dinner to celebrate my birthday. It's a really cool place, especially for large groups. We saw a couple of tables with 8+ parties. Bonus that you can get a pitcher of sangria for $10 on Sunday's when you order paella. We ordered several dishes to try, all tapas with the exception of the paella. Here's what we tried: Conejo Frito con Miel 43 - this is 3 pieces of fried rabbit legs tossed in honey and sea salt for $12. I just wanted to try it and it tastes like chicken. The honey was a good and needed touch. This was our favorite dish. Piquillos Rellenos - 3 sweet red peppers stuffed with goat cheese, cream cheese, pecans and Serrano ham for $13. We liked this one. I was afraid with 2 cheeses it would feel heavy but it was surprisingly light tasting. Jumbo Gambas al ajillo - 4 jumbo shrimp sautéed with garlic and dried chiles for $19. I thought this was spicy but not at all. It would've been better if the bread was toasted like crostinis. Panela 43 - 5 pieces of grilled panela cheese tossed with licor 43 honey for $12. We really enjoyed this one and it shouldn't be surprising but it was sweet lol. Kinda like a dessert cheese. Toro Small Tablado + small Jamón Iberrico - for $29 and $22. The small tablado had 3 meats, 3 cheeses, olives, pickled peppers and mustard, fig jam, and 4 crackers. The chef selected manchego, Mahon, Kilometro 39, Chorizo Español, jamón serrano, and sobrassada. Then we tacked on a small order of the jamón iberrico. IMO, $22 for the 3 pieces of ibérico was NOT worth it. Nonetheless, the charcuterie plate was good. Toro Paella (small): this was this classic paellla with peas, shrimp, mussels, chicken, calamari, pork belly & spanish chorizo for $34. Personally, I didn't find any pork belly but I only had 2 small scoops cuz this came at the end and we were on the brink of full lol. I also only saw these 2 jumbo shrimp and 2 mussels. So if you're looking for a heavier seafood paella, choose the other one (paella marinera). I thought this had a good flavor. It didn't have the slight crunch/char that I thought paella is supposed to have but I'm just glad the rice was cooked all the way thru. We took home nearly 3/4 of the pan cuz we were full. Pulpo a la Gallega - octopus and poached potatoes covered in paprika for $21. This was our least favorite. All we could taste was paprika Our server took time to provide us with recommendations but he was kinda slow coming to check on us. The service was great and the space is very nicely presented with ample indoor and outdoor seating and a large bar. Food tasted great. Restaurant was spacious with two levels and outdoor patio. It is too hot to sit outside. Our waiter was attentive and refilled water frequently. The first thing we had was the calamari and the 4 Monticito flight. The calamari was AWESOME!!! Big tendrils with perfect seasoning and nice breading. I didn't love the sauce, but I would have gotten another order asap. The goat cheese sandwich was amazing. The seafood one was pretty good. The meat one was okay. And the pan con tomato was meh. The charcuterie was good although the crackers for bread were not my thing. The jam was awesome and the meats were good. The only thing that really let me down was the potatas bravas. It was fried potato with maybe a bit of paprika. The sauces on the side were also not my thing...but maybe if the potato was tossed in the sauce...I don't know...it was just not good. This Spanish restaurant is decent, but given the many options in the city, it doesn't quite stand out--especially when it comes to flavor. The service was good, though not exceptional, which is something I would expect at this price point. This was our second attempt at dining here--on our first visit, we arrived at 8:30 PM (30 minutes before closing) but were turned away. This time, we made a reservation via Yelp, arrived well in advance, and were seated promptly, 2/1/2025. The ambiance is beautiful, with elegant décor and dim lighting, but the live music on weekends made it uncomfortably loud. Service was quick, but the food itself lacked the depth of flavor I've experienced at other Spanish restaurants. We started with the croquetas de jamón, which were lukewarm and had a noticeable oil flavor. At nearly $4 each, they weren't worth the calories, and we left one uneaten. The paella, featuring pork and egg, was an interesting twist, but the flavors didn't quite come together, and it was spicier than expected. While the experience was pleasant overall--especially given the limited Spanish restaurants in the area--it wasn't memorable, and for the price, I wouldn't rush back. We came in during 'HORA FELIZ' and went a little crazy; Patatas Bravas, Calamares, Mejillones, Montadito Flight. Mom also got the Ensalada de Primavera and Dad got Serrano y Manchego. Enjoyed both Paellas which wete the Toro Special and Negra- both flavorful, the Negra felt like it lacked toppings in it; also enjoyed the Solomillo tapas- meat was cooked medium how we asked for. Not a fan of the mussels, it was a bit too salty for me. They had a pitcher deal of Sangria for 10 bucks, which was pretty good, wish there was more fruit though. We were seated pretty quickly, but the problem is where the service and how quick the food arrived/ how we were checked on; I understand stand the paella is made to order, but hoped that we were warned in advance since we had 2 kids with us; the first paella we ordered came in even after the second one we ordered. We've been craving for some good paella and excited to try Toro. Maybe I was building it up in my head, but I wasn't a fan of the paella as much. I found it rather too salty, but the seafood was great. The highlight of our meal was the tapas. Loved all of them. We had the calamari, fried shrimp, sausage and many more. Went on a Sunday. They had a great special where if you buy a paella, you will get a $10 pitcher of sangria. Of course, we took advantage of this deal. We got the seafood,paella. It had Calamari, shrimp, mussels, and baby octopus. We got the large and it fed the four of us. We did have a little bit leftover from it. We did order tapas to start off with. We had the papas braves. The sauce was not on the potatoes. You do have them on the side so you can make it as spicy or not as spicy as you like. We also had the gambitas de ajillo. It is a shrimp dish. It comes with a side of round slices of bread. . It would have been nice to have a little bit more bread since it only came with four. The best of the three tapas we ordered was the queso al horno. It is baked Brie with herbs and honey. I could have definitely eaten it all. For dessert, we shared a carlota de Limon and tarrijas. The carlota was my favorite. It tasted like key lime pie. The tarrijas remind of a bread pudding. Our waiter was very nice and efficient. Parking is available on site. Since I've visited every other Toro location in the city, I figured I had to be fair and make the trek out to La Cantera to patronize the newest location. Unlike the original Stone Oak location, this space is open and airy with plenty of room to spread out, an adorable tucked away bar hidey-hole on the second floor and multiple levels to dine on. My friend and I arrived during happy hour time (daily until 7) and took advantage of HH specials to sample more tapas than we probably had initially planned to (but that our tastebuds weren't mad at) Service was great and there wasn't a single thing we ordered that we didn't enjoy. Would highly recommend any of the following tapas dishes: - Patatas Bravas: You can never go wrong with this potato dish - Tacos de Cochinita Pibil: the marinade was soooo good and the tacos bursting with flavor - Croquetas de Jamon Serrano (my absolute favorite tapas dish from the whole Toro menu) - Calamari: probably my least favorite item on the table but still delicious! - and the HH Charcuterie board: I wish our server would have explained what was on the board when it was delivered but let's be real, at the end of the day it was ALL delicious so I suppose it didn't really matter...but whatever was on it received two big thumbs up. Not the best paella I've ever had but was good. The calamari and potato bravas tapas were mediocre. Service was existent but not exceptional. It was a Wednesday and few people but it was so loud cannot imagine what a full house was like. Since I can't just travel to Valencia for paella this will do but it wasn't true Valencian paella. We happened to find Toro at La Cantera while Christmas shopping and we couldn't have left happier. We sat outside and it was so nice and felt very private. The plants were not only beautiful but created the atmosphere of being alone and not in the middle of shoppers hustling around. Gabriel greeted us with such knowledge of the menu from wine to entrees. We started with a tempernillo from the Toro region. Gabriel talked about how the grapes grew to create such a bold flavor. We had to have 2 bottles! We started off with the Gazpacho and we weren't disappointed. The truffle was such a great compliment to this bite. We had some of the Iberico Jamon and it literally melts in your mouth. The Tempernillo really made the Iberico flavors just dance around in your mouth. We had a few other tapas, the sirloin with Shishito peppers and some manchego in olive oil and rosemary. Every morsel at our table simply made us happy. We had to share a paella and went with the Toro. Again, this was perfect and had such amazing flavor. Needless to say we will be back much sooner than later. This place is a hidden gem!! The ambience is kinda swanky but still cozy! We were seated quickly with reservation and the place was quite lively for a Sunday! We ordered probably about every tapas on the menu lol. Definitely recommend the patatas bravas, gambitas, croquetas, and the camaron y chorizo. All were hefty portions which we def didn't expect from tapas hahaha but it was wonderful nonetheless. We also got their house shot flight things which beware its three double shots and not just one like we thought. Which was also another surprise but hey everything's bigger in Texas even the Spanish food! The paella was the star of the show! We got the small and we had tons of leftover for two people. Me and the misses came here on our pre valentine date. We normally visit the downtown location, but they no longer offer daytime hours. So sad. We came to this location instead. It's beautiful, and classy, yet the downtown location has this old world charm that is hard to replicate. We started off with the small tablado and two beers. Those are always amazing together! We are huge goat cheese fans, and the Serrano is amazing! This location had crackers with the tablado? Not the the bread? Either way this never misses! We then moved on to the queso de cabra frito, patatas bravas and then our all time fav the panela 43. The papas had the sauce on the side which was confusing.... The cabra frito was a first for us. It did not disappoint! They were all spectacular and equal to the downtown location! The panela 43 was actually slightly better than the downtown location! Now the next two are why this location gets a 4 and not a 5. The paella was missing the socarrat. We were very disappointed. It's like they stopped it right before it got nice and crispy. Still delicious, but paella has to have it! Then the desert was very disappointing. We had the Torta de Santiago. It was dry, and dense. Almost inedible. But we are polite. We had an incredible experience here on a Saturday evening. First, the restaurant is so open and absolutely stunning with a warm smile on the hostess at the door. We sat at the bar and our bartender quickly greeted us and took our drink order. We stated with tapas and every single item was outstanding. The tortillas on the tacos were perfect and the pork was so flavorful. On the side, we're picked onions that had made this dish a flavor bomb! Then, we ordered the baked sheep's brie, and it was so tasty with the different textures of soft cheese to the charred honey with the crackers. We also ordered sirloin and sautéed octopus. Dined here on a Friday evening recently, first time at this location. Visited the Stone Oak location for dinner many, many years ago. Average to slightly above average food. Paella was just alright...almost top heavy on the saffron and salt. Not nearly enough protein in the dish. And complete absence of socarrot, which was highly disappointing. Isn't that one of the best parts of a paella?! Enjoyed a tew tapas and, while okay in flavor, were frankly way overpriced for the quality. The bread provided was really bad. Dry, tough, stale, and severely lacking in any qualities that a nice crusty bread should have. Cocktails were way too sweet, and the sangria was finished with what could best be described as Sprite or 7-UP. This is a telltale sign of a poorly thought out sangria recipe. Service was average, too. The wait staff were milling around but never quite looked busy. It took way too long to get the check. Overall it was no better than 3 stars. Anyone familiar with the true tastes of Spain will leave disappointed. I dont think I'll be back. read more
