What the hell is wrong with this place? I ordered a Coffee shake for the first time. I pay for the two items, only to be told seconds later that they ran out of ice cream and make me a coffee smoothie (???) or any other smoothie. I was like "OK, how about a Banana smoothie?"........nope, proceeded to say they were out of bananas/toppings. So I asked "Well, what can I get from the frozen drink menu?".......they kept saying a "Coffee smoothie" and let me know that if I didn't like it, I could get something else. While they were "explaining" this mess, I see a whole big ass tub of vanilla ice cream...........so I said, well I'll just take a Vanilla shake then......they again say "We're out of ice cream." Was I missing something??? I see it right in the cooler. And there are 3 others that ordered shakes right behind me not understanding anything they're saying either. Are you out of toppings or are you out of ice cream??? Also, don't you think it would be wise to let the other staff taking orders that you're out of whatever it is you are out of? I had to get back to work so I grab my salad that it took a long time for the guy to make (and mess up as usual) and tasted the nasty "coffee smoothie" and hurried back to the office.....where I discovered the guy forgot the chicken in my salad. I ordered an Uptown Salad w/Chicken (No Cheese, No Onion). It was nothing buy lettuce, apple, cranberries, walnuts, and 4 grapes...... Every single time I order the same salad I've been ordering for almost 2 years, they either add in what I say to leave out, or they forget something altogether. I ordered a small/skinny sandwich and was charged for a regular sandwich. When I caught the mistake a woman told me she would charge me for the skinny sandwich. I slide it across the counter and the employee said I threw it at the cashier. I am a 70 year old senior and very frail. I just slid it. I told her she was mistaken and she gave me a dirty look. I said this is the third time they've gotten my order wrong. She told me not to go back there anymore as long as I was dissatisfied. A customer standing next to me said you didn't throw anything, you gently pushed it. The customer told me to call corporate. I then asked the name of the original woman who was falsifying about my returning the sandwich and she said no way am I giving it to you. I then asked the cashier the name of the woman who got so surly with me and the woman said to the cashier don't you dare tell her. I called corporate headquarters three times and left messages each time, and never heard a word from them. read more

Potbelly's is a good place to come for an inexpensive lunch: for about $7 I ordered the Original Italian, an IBC Root beer, and a HUMUNGO pickle! A pretty good deal if you ask me. I was a little disappointed though with my sandwich. It tasted a little bland and surprising because with all the different Italian meats, I assumed it would have been a little more salty. Good thing I had that pickle! They were even nice enough to cut it into 4 slices, which I shared with my friends. A HUGE pickle almost as big as my sandwich for only $0.99?!!!! WOW. The only other thing I found confusing was that there was a guy that came up to take our order, then we reached the counter and two different people asked us what our sandwich was (one to place condiments in) and then at the checkstand when you paid. I would think there would be an easier way to do this. I just found it a tad annoying. Next time I'm here, I'll be sure to ask for my bread on whole wheat. I totally forgot about that, but the sandwich was already made. Oh well. The white bread was really good though: warm and toasty on the outside and warm and soft on the inside... mmmm. read more

Ok, time to alienate some folks by revealing what I eat for breakfast from time to time. See i pass this Potbelly's on my way from the Blue Line to my office and the hankering... it becomes too much sometimes. Potbelly's serves breakfast, by the way. They are in sub-format with egg, sausage, ham, cheese and other goodies all toasted up and made to order. Yum. So one of the sammiches is ham, swiss, egg and mushroom on white. Sounds delish, no? Well I'm not quite done with it. See I add things. I add mayo. And lettuce. And onions. And, uhm, giadinera. And I eat it. And it's really, really good. Really good. I'm so ashamed. But give it a try, you'll be hooked too. Wash it down with a Pomegranate Pear Nantucket Nectars and lunch won't seem so far away. read more

The word "Potbelly" makes me think of two things: Cute li'l stoves, and the not-so-cute paunch that can develop around your waist from overindulging. Which is what Potbelly Sandwich Works makes me do. Weekly. Sometimes daily. Shut up, don't judge me. First - I love their sandwiches. I love that they're warm and crispy and that you can order them SKINNY and feel like you're being good. (When in reality you're saving perhaps only a mere crouton's worth of calories) But more than their sandwiches - I love their cookies. The most perfectly baked cookies I've ever tasted. Slightly underdone, moist, sugary and delicious! I've been abstaining from the Potbelly and it's crack-addictive cookies lately, as I'm on the 'wedding weight loss plan' and don't want to be upstaged on my wedding day by my own 'potbelly'. However this plan has since been SABOTAGED. It seems the stage manager for the production I'm working on just happens to be an employee of Potbelly's....and she has been bringing in the oatmeal chocolate chip crack cookies to rehearsals...and since they're so close...so readily available...I... well, yes. Yes, I've been hitting the cookies again. Shut up, I don't have a problem. But if this keeps up, I may need to find a good seamstress... read more

Ever since being introduced to Potbelly in grad school, I've been a fan. While prices have risen over the years, the quality stays the same and i find myself still willing to shell out $4.50 (currently) for a toasted sandwich from Potbelly. Sure, it may not be as cheap as Subway (price:portion ratio) and you may have less choices, but I like the taste infinitely better. There's something about the toasted bread, the crunch of the crust and the softness of the bread beneath. This particular Potbelly is in a great location, just kitty-corner to the Jackson entrance to Union Station - perfect for commuters, grabbing a bite on the way to work in the morning, or on the way home in the evening. read more

Less than $4.50 and I occasionally splurge and get one of their big sugar cookies (which are a better value than those sad little bags of chips). They're not made in the shop, but they're crunchy and soft when they come out of the toaster. As a kid who grew up with parents owning not just one, but two sandwich shops... this place makes some darn good sandwiches. It's not necessarily the healthiest place to eat, unless you get a turkey hold the mayo and oil. But The Wreck and the Italian are pretty tasty. Add a milk shake and a CPR kit to go, and you're all set. I also like that they have live acoustic music performing there. I meet my husband here for lunch if I have the day off and he is working. It's convenient location, clean, and we spend most of our time talking and eating, not waiting in line. The food is good old standard Potbelly. Can't beat it. Fresh, delicious, and made your way correctly. The cookies...hard to beat. Gooey goodness. If you want serious one-to-one customer service where they will talk to you for 5 minutes like at some grocery stores, this is not the place. I've only eaten at Potbelly's once, and the rating descriptor more than sums up my experience: "Meh. I've experienced better." Honestly, maybe I hyped this place up more than I should have, given the almost unanimous positive ratings. I stopped in for lunch and ordered the Italian with hot peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and Italian seasoning. I was expecting a massive sandwich stuffed with various deli meats, cheese, and veggies. What I got was two wafer thin pieces of overly-toasted bread filled mostly by lettuce with a few slices of meat/cheese thrown in for good measure. Now, I know there's a Skinny version of each Original sandwich, and if this is it, I'm sorry for those of us on a diet. Regardless, that's not what I ordered. As much as it pains me to say this, I think I'd rather take that $4.50 and put it towards a $5 foot-long at Subway. At least then, I'd be able to satiate my hunger. read more

While almost all of the Potbellys in the downtown area are pretty gawdawful, this one is by far the worst. (That said, Potbellys in city neighborhoods and the 'burbs seem to have it down--from customer service to quality of food). The bottom line is this: The people that work here hate their jobs and either make you feel unwelcome when you try to order or simply ignore you. My first experience with this attitude was a few years ago, so I complained to Potbelly. They sent me some free salad coupons (that expired a week later so I never used them) and nothing changed. So I started going to the other Potbelly in the area (150 S Wacker--decent service, usually, but they always screw up orders). Today, because it was on my way, I decided to give this Potbelly another go. I stepped up, the guy asked what I wanted, I said a chicken salad salad, he barked out the word "SALAD," and that was it. He said nothing else to me. Now, at every other Potbelly on the planet, the sandwich artist (or whatever the f*** they call themselves) will say, "step all the way down" or "go see that guy with the handlebar mustache" ... whatever ... to direct you to the salad station where the salad artist will make your g**damn salad. NOT THIS GUY! He just stared straight ahead, so I moved along, and waited behind the guy in front of me for someone to tell me what to do next. Meanwhile #1: two other guys were standing behind the counter, doing nothing ... well, not nothing. One was repeatedly pretending to throw food at the other and giggling, while the other pretended to duck--which I would have actually thought nothing of if I weren't being completely ignored. Meanwhile #2: TWO people are directed around me to get their salads. FInally, I asked one of the sandwich artist what the deal was, and he said, "Oh, you were supposed to walk all the way down to this station [where there was no one standing] and wait for someone to come and make your salad." Well, someone could have TOLD me that! While yet another dude made my salad, the previous dude came back and said, "Hey, sorry about that. Next time, so it doesn't happen again, walk all the way down to that station [where no one is standing.]" OK, thanks for the gesture of an apology, but why can't someone tell me that? A lot of people will come in there for the first time, order a salad and not know to do that. Dumb rule! Morons. I'm typing this while I eat my salad, and to be honest, it's quite good. Potbelly's is one of my favorite places to have a sandwich. Most people will easily find a favorite and stick with that every time you go. I tend to prefer sandwiches that don't easily fall apart and have their guts spilling out all over the place, and it certainly never happens with my Potbelly sandwiches. They also serve shakes and malts which are a wonderful treat in the summer. The nice thing about this particular location as a Loop lunch location, is apparently not everyone knows about it. So as you'll see unmanageable lines out the other nearby locations, you will often see a more reasonable line here. Unfortunately, the efficiency at this spot can be quite erratic as they have had some good days and some not so good days. I have not had too many problems securing a table here, but I haven't tried on Fridays as much. read more

Really awesome sub place if for only one reason, the bread. This, to me, is proof that for a sandwich you need a great foundation of good bread. Sure, the rest of the stuff in the middle is important too, but so often the bread is neglected when it's the soul of the sandwich (Love me some alliteration there). I had the basic turkey sub and it was pretty delightful. It was warm without completely wilting the vegetables, and the vinaigrette was utterly delicious and made it pleasantly sour. The sandwich was a bit on the smaller side overall, and I could have used a skosh more meat. Overall really great though. At lunch they had a live musician too. He was excellent, though we only caught the tail end of his last piece. Definitely worth your time to try this place if you're tired of Subway. read more

When you crave Potbelly's, you crave Potbelly's and nothing else will work for you. It is the magic of their sandwiches. As far as this particular location goes, the sammies are on par with every other location I've been to. At lunch there seems to be a confusing mess around the registers that can be difficult to navigate especially with the fact that soup and milkshake/smoothie orders are directed to the registers immediately when people are already waiting to pay with sandwiches there. Potbelly's will always have the best darn oatmeal chocolate chip cookie I've ever tasted, though. I will honestly make the short walk here just to dish out the $1.38 (with tax) for one of these heaven-baked goodies. read more

Despite being in a very busy building, this potbelly never disappoints in service and quality of sandwiches. Even with long lines during lunch time, it never takes more than 10 minutes to pay and receive your sandwich. By far the worst experience ever. I work in the building and frequently eat there, the young ladies in the morning are always so pleasant but after management change or whatever changed they have been lacking certain aspects. Every time I go in for breakfast they are out of something, lately it's been no ciabatta bread and today they had no egg. I've also notice how dirty it has been and mentioned a few times to them how I've seen a few roaches around the area. There is no sense of urgency and they just don't seem to care about what they're doing. I love Potbelly breakfast sandwiches, but recently the service has just been really bad at this location. They used to be good and fast and friendly at 6:00 am, but now every person in there moves at a snail's pace. This has happened multiple times recently..... you should not have to wait minutes to order and then wait minutes to pay after your sandwich has already been finished.... and I was the only person in the store! I have had it. Usually I have to wait forever in line because nobody likes to make the salads, today I got half a salad. Seriously, the bowl is half empty and I can't go back because I'm stuck at work. I'd give them a pass if it was late in the day and they ran out, but I was there at 11:30am with only 4 others so there is no excuse. I should have thought to check it before I left but usually the salad is handed to me and there's not a problem, today they handed it directly to the cashier who stuck it in a bag so I couldn't see it.
