What happened to the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies??? They used to be soft and fresh. Mine was crunchy and stale. I ordered the assorted box so I also got the chocolate brownie cookies and sugar cookies to share, but my primary reason for visiting was for the oatmeal chocolate chip for myself. Luckily the other flavors were on point to make up for the disappointment. Also, service was subpar. The cashier was incredibly friendly to the patron ahead of me but I didn't receive the same treatment. For example, she offered a bag to the customer and bagged all her items, but I had to explicitly request one and she just slid the bag across the counter for me to bag my items myself. My daughter and I were out of town and excited about trying restaurants we don't have where we live. So we found Potbelly Sandwiches, and I'm glad we did. It's located off W. Broad steet in a shopping center. The restaurant had a rustic feel with a good vibe!! The employees were very nice and informative. They had a $7.99 special with a 6 inch turkey, ham, or chicken sub, a drink, and chips. I got the turkey sub and it was really good and toasted. The chips were good also. I also got a brownie cookie and a bag of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Those cookies were crack!! I definitely recommend them. My daughter got bacon, avocado, and turkey and a potato soup she really enjoyed her meal as well. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the soup. It was really watery. But still decent I guess. This was our 2nd visit to this shop. The first was about 1.5 years ago; I didn't write a review then, but it was a good meal. . The sandwiches we ordered today were correct and quite good. For the most part, the staff was polite and cordial, but seemed a bit "frazzled" probably due to it nearing lunch time. The shop and restroom were clean, but the entire shop looked pretty worn and needed sprucing up. Our main complaint was the temperature! I know it's been REALLY hot outside, but the ambient inside temperature on my phone was 65℉. The overhead fans were spinning pretty good adding to it. (Luckily, no penguins or roaming polar bears were sighted... ) The windows had condensation on them - I'm guessing because of the temperature. We knew the price was always a bit "upity" for what one gets, but $42.00 for three mid-size subs, two drinks, and one small bag of chips is a bit sobering! ‍ We live near Brandermill and only get up that way 2 or 3 times a year; we'll seek out some coupons or offers for our next visit. Ordered a "big" size prime rib steak. Barely any meat. Barely any cheese. I added caramelized onions, they used raw onions. The meat and cheese doesn't even cover the sandwich, and the heap of raw onions is disgusting. Basically a raw onion sandwich with a bit of meat and cheese. Charging $15 for this heap of garbage should be criminal- and forcing me to go back to the store for a refund(because this was a pick up order) is just a shady business practice. I usually place a mobile order to keep things quick and easy, and my food is always ready on time. The service is fast and efficient. I will say I've noticed a few rude or judgmental looks when I come in mainly from some of the female staff which makes the experience feel a bit uncomfortable at times. We're fairly new to the Potbelly experience. My first try last summer was not great, so I wasn't in a rush to come back. My second visit was good, so that prompted this third visit to this location. Named after the potbelly stove, with decor to match. Kinda old school, dated Applebees look. They could use a rebranding. Once again, my turkey sub was quite tasty. My mom enjoyed her roast beef, as well. Love the bread. They have three sizes for their subs, which is interesting. The small is for a little kid who doesn't eat much. The original is an average size. You will probably be satisfied with this size, but definitely not overeating. The large (I forget their actual terms for sizes), is when you're a little hungrier than normal. The counter server was friendly and we got our food quickly. read more

The shop has a lively, bustling vibe with a fast-moving assembly line setup. You pick your sandwich, customize it with toppings, and it's ready in no time. I went with the turkey and avocado on wheat, and it was delicious. The real standout? The peppers--absolutely to die for! They added the perfect kick of spice. For over a year, I would normally order my chicken salad salad lunch at least once or twice a week since of my dietary restrictions. About 2 months ago, Potbelly's website has not allowed people to order food. I have told the manager of the day several times and I get, we will look into that. Nothing happens. Today, I tried to order food again because my job only gives us 30 minutes for lunch, enough time to run and pick up a take out order and come back. As usual, the Potbelly website doesn't work so I drove up there. They were busier then usual but once I got to the counter, the guy (Parker) stop taking orders with me, then proceeded to open cheese and make some 4 other sandwiches that I am to understand were to go orders. I asked him nicely if I could go ahead and put my order in for my usual chicken salad salad so I can get back to work, he responded, "I will be with you in a moment". I wait a couple minutes and he ignored me almost like he was making me wait on purpose. I got the message all to clear and I said I have to go back to work, hungry, dizzy, and not feeling well because I only had time to have a cup of coffee and a breakfast cookie for breakfast. I talked briefly with a person in charge (not a manager) and this person made no effort in saying he would help me at all. Only because it was convenient, my sis and I came in for a sandwich. This restaurant is "sub" par and lackluster. It had a dark, ugly interior with orange and brown colors and a 70's basement feel. It's set up sort of like Subway, but it's not bright or inviting. The entry line is a bit confusing with that big hideous stove blocking the way. Well, we went ahead and ordered, but you can't see the ingredients as they are added to your sandwich because the wood wall blocks the view... sketchy. After getting our subs, we turned to get a table and every one of them was dirty! Trash, scraps of foods, crumbs, napkins, paper... was strewn not only on the tables but all over the floors and counters. Yep, we should have left, but it was hot outside, so we asked one of the employees to clean a table. She seemed disgruntled as she moseyed over and haphazardly wiped our table. No cleanser, just a rag. And she didn't bother to clean the other tables or sweep up the debris. The place wasn't busy (no wonder!) so we took note that these folks don't care about their jobs and seemed lazy. All this during Covid mind you, and the sign posted on the door about how they care about cleanliness is a joke to say the least! Due to the poor appearance and grungy environment as well as the lackadaisical attitude of the employees, we won't be back. Ever! I did mention our concerns to one of the other employees, who didn't seem concerned either. Too bad, because the sandwiches tasted pretty good! I dropped by because I've always wanted to try this restaurant and I was in the area. The first thing I noticed walking in was the lack of acknowledgement even though there was 3 people behind the counter and only one person checking out as I entered. The ordering was simple but the prep seemed rushed. Even though I was looking at the toppings, the person prepping my sandwich was asking "is that all". While my sandwich looked good, it was missing something and it was kind of dry after a few bites. Luckily I had picked up a packet of mustard and a pack of mayo because that helped a lot. I ended up not eating my whole sandwich. I'm glad I was able to try it but I'm not sure if I will return. Price vs size of the sandwich is one reason. I've only been here 3 times but the 3rd time has sealed their fate. The first 2 times were fine enough, seemed like a normal sandwich shop, decent speed of service, and somewhat of an enticing menu, however, the 1 thing destroying all of this: cleanliness. On my 3rd visit, my wife and I ordered sandwiches per usual. As we began to bite into our sandwiches, my wife noticed something moving on her sandwich. A closer looked revealed a live fly struggling to free itself from the confines of her sandwich. Utterly disgusted, we couldn't bring ourselves to finish our sandwiches and wound up tossing them with similar feelings of filth. If you know and like the chain already, rest easy, you'll be happy with this one. Clean, airy and a relatively good value, the sandwiches are toasted and loaded. Get the Zapp's chips with them and you can't go wrong. The lunch crowd is going to love this one...glad there is lots of seating in this deep shop. A family of four can easily skirt under 30 bucks, but if you want to indulge on shakes (which are awesome) or desserts, prepare to spend a bit more. Hopefully the first of many Potbellys to come to the RIC. A very straightforward menu but lots of choice as to how to top and embellish. I think the best thing that I can say about Potbelly is that you will not leave hungry unless you order takeout. I wrote a glowing 5 star review of Potbelly Sandwich Works yesterday. To read that just look at my past reviews. Today it's with a heavy heart that I'm compelled to perform my Yelp duties and issue a sad review. I had high expectations riding on this visit and unfortunately they were dashed. The staff was super nice and friendly. They greet you when you walk in the door "Welcome to Potbelly!" I asked about the size difference between the BIGs and the regulars and was quickly told they don't even have the bread for those. That's a sign you're not ready to open in my humble opinion. I ordered A WRECK and my lady love got the tuna. We both thought we clearly spoke about what ingredients we wanted on our sandwiches. Evidently we did not. Maybe we were too busy making small talk and distracted them? I can't say for sure. Mine had super-hot Jalapeno peppers (which I didn't want) and my lady love was missing onions on her tuna. In a very odd surprise mine also came with carrots. Carrots aren't even a topping option but there it was. Maybe the carrots come along for the ride when they put the hot peppers on? Things went downhill from here. The bread wasn't nearly as magical as I remember. The tuna was like eating dry saw dust. They don't mix anything in with the tuna. No celery, barely any mayo, no relish, no dill, nothing at all really. I'm not saying tuna has to be a certain way but this is Potbelly, so jazz it up a bit. We are here for great tasting sandwiches, if we wanted ordinary there is a Subway nearby I'm sure. It all LOOKS pretty good but the flavors weren't there anymore. I think Potbelly outgrew itself. I think they expanded too quickly and making a quality sandwich took a back seat to making a profit. I've seen it time and time again. Table 10 did this in Fullerton, CA. The worst is all the Ph restaurants that exist now. They're all cashing in on the Ph name and putting out chicken broth garbage. I believe in Potbelly and I will return for a redemption lunch. They just opened so there are going to be a lot of wedding day jitters. In time they'll iron out the wrinkles and get their act together. Potbelly Sandwich Shop has always been a favorite one until today. My BLTA sandwich was full of whole peppercorns, making it impossible for me to eat and enjoy this combination of bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. I have had this same sandwich in the past and there were no whole peppercorns. I am not sure if the sandwich creator was unable to grind fresh pepper onto a sandwich or not. I also cannot image making a sandwich with such a large amount of pepper! I will not return. Eating such a large amount of spices can have a devastating affect on one's digestive system. I love Potbelly. It's my favorite sandwich shop. Seriously, it's great. When I worked in DC I'd eat at the Union Station location once a week. And now I eat at the downtown Richmond location a few times a month. I've been to this location on Broad twice. My last visit was at about 8pm last Friday night and it was pretty horrible. My wife and I ordered a Turkey club, chocolate milkshake, and bowl of chili. There were three people working at the time: milkshake guy, cashier lady, sandwich guy. I ordered our Turkey club and sandwich guy starts making it. He does a pretty good job. Could have used more hot peppers, but that's probably on me and not him. Thank you sandwich guy. My wife ordered a milkshake and chili. Sandwich guy announced the chili and milkshake order. Immediately, Milkshake guy starts complaining. He kept saying they're out of ice cream and he didn't want to make a milkshake. He complained over and over. The thing is, Milkshake guy never said anything directly to me or my wife, he was just complaining loud enough for us to hear it. Okay, whatevs. Milkshake guy starts making the milkshake. I tell cashier lady I want one of the cookies up front. She's nice, but she's making some kind of chocolate milk as she's taking to me - cashier lady is pouring some big gallon of chocolate syrup into a small plastic cup that's filled with milk. It's unprofessional, but I don't really care. Cashier lady is busy with that gallon of chocolate syrup, so she says go ahead and take a cookie, she won't charge me for it. Okay, sweet. While this is going on, Milkshake guy stops making the milkshake, goes to the trashcan at the front of the store and starts to take the trash out. His hands are all up in the trash, pushing it down and whatnot. Then he stops doing that and goes back to making the milkshake. Not a big deal, except for the fact that Milkshake guy does not wash his hands after touching the trash. Bam, milkshake is done and he looks happy. He hands the milkshake to me and I give it to my wife. She is livid (because she saw milkshake guy in the trash and then make the shake without washing his hands) but doesn't say anything. I pay. Cashier lady then asks if I want a bag and I said, yes. Cashier lady was busy stirring her chocolate milk so she asked Milkshake guy to get my bag. He scoffs but does it anyway, and with the same trash-hands he opens the brown paper bag; putting his hand all up in the bag to get it open. We leave, free cookie and trash-milkshake in hand, but without our chili that they charged me for. They forgot to make it and I forgot until I was already in there car. My wife didn't want me to go back in to get it because she had sanitary concerns. I love potbelly. Sandwich guy did a good job. I just will probably never be back to this location. read more

For some reason, I'm a huge fan of sub/grinder sandwiches and have eaten at a ton of options around Richmond, but one childhood-memory sandwich has eluded me. Let me take you back to the Village Inn Pizza Parlor in Charleston, SC, where my family and I would eat at least once a month. While the family ate pizza, I would get a ham and cheese or Italian grinder. Quality ingredients and perfectly toasted bread that was crispy on the outside with just the right amount of bite and chewy on the inside. A light drizzle of olive oil and a dusting of oregano and you had perfection. Over time, Village Inn 'jumped the shark' trying to compete with cheaper pizza and sub joints, and eventually they went out of business. *sigh* So anyway, back to Potbelly...I have tried a few different sandwiches and while everything I've had has been good, I'm a fan of the Italian and the ham and cheese. The bread is similar to what I used to eat at Village Inn and the ingredients are solid. The pepper relish...OMG! I could eat it by the bucket. While Potbelly isn't exactly what I ate as a kid, the food memory is close enough to make this a sandwich place that'll be on my go-to list for a while. P.S. Potbelly just opened, and when it comes to Subs.... I have to try and see what I think. As I have stated in other reviews when it comes to Sub Sandwiches, I love a 'Good' Sub.... So the First thing I saw on the Menu Board was the Italian Sub. One of my favorites, so I gave the order to the young lady. They offer Multi Grain Bread or Regular.... I decided to go for the Multi grain. When, she pulled the roll out, I told her I wanted a whole Sub and not a half which is about 6" long. She said this is their ONLY size.... so, again I looked at the Board and decided that they are charging TOO much for what looked like a very small sub. The price they had on the board is about the cost of a foot long in the sub shops around town.... She said, they were planning to get larger Rolls, however in the meantime she would put extra meat on the sub at an additional cost. So, I will be paying almost 2 dollars more... so I told her to hold off and I would make another decision. I decided on the Chicken Salad Salad. They hand make the salad for you, however they use a Chicken Salad as appose to slices of grilled chicken cut up... By the time she finished, I had a huge salad which was fresh with Vegetables and all the trimmings. With the Chicken Salad within the Salad, now I can understand as to why it is called the Chicken Salad Salad. It makes sense now... I will try Potbelly again in the near future.... I will wait until they get the larger rolls to make the subs. I was JUST not going to pay the price of a sub which looked VERY small to me and the size of the bread was less than 6"s long. I am not a huge fan of chain restaurants, BUT I love trying out new places and you won't know how great or terrible it is, until you try it for yourself and today was the day. This place is actually quite small and I felt a little cramped even though the place was only half full. You can either create your own sandwich here or you can get one of their signature sandwiches. Since I usually go crazy when I customize any food item, it's a safer decision to just choose of their specialty sandwiches. I got the wreck sandwich which had: Salami, Roast Beef, Turkey, Ham & Swiss Cheese on your choice of multi grain or white bread. For $5 it was a good price for the size of this mini sub (it's not a sandwich). The sub was okay, and there wasn't anything on the sub that was screaming flavor or freshness. It's probably on par with a sub way or a jersey mikes. They also serve a small selection daily soups/salads and they have malts and milkshakes here. The one thing that I didn't like was that I wasn't able to see my ingredients or my sandwich being made; the employees and ingredients were hidden behind a tall counter. I just like being able to see how they handle food and how the "fresh" the food looks before my eyes. My husband and I visited after church one Sunday to grab a quick Sunday lunch. First thing I noticed was the sandwich board (no pun intended) out front stating that your meal will be completed in 8 minutes or less- and they delivered!! I was a little leery to go as I feel there are SO many freakin' sandwich shops (Subway, Quizno's, Jersey Mikes, Firehouse, Whichwich, etc. etc. etc. just to name a few) but my husband really wanted to go. I got the Mediterranean sandwich as I am vegetarian and my husband got "the wreck" sandwich. We also got a side of potato salad. And I wish I got a cookie- they had samples and I tried the sugar cookie which was probably the best darn sugar cookie I have ever had. We were both impressed with the size of the sandwiches. I could only get down half. Mine had hummus, veggies, feta and some too stinkin hot peppers that next time I won't get. About burned my face off. My husbands had a bunch of meat and more meat. The potato salad was good too. A little bit 'looser' in consistency then what I am use to but delicious none the less. Service was quick and friendly- place was clean. Overall a good sandwich shop- just SO hard to be 'above the cut' when there are so many to choose from- but I can say Potbelly is in my top three. read more

If you've been to Northern Virginia or DC you'll see a lot of these sandwich restaurants (over 50 according to Google.) Now that they've branched down to Richmond I can eat a good toasted sandwich that's not Subway. I have yet to try their soup, salads or smoothies, but will surely in the future. I usually get a wreck with all the extras and was not disappointed. When I came back I wanted to try a healthy sandwich and the Mediterranean "sounded" good. It comes standard with a zippy tasting hummus, feta, artichoke hearts, crispy cukes, roasted bell peppers and I added their crispy hot peppers and chicken breast in a multigrain bread. If I get this again, I'll probably skip the hummus because it just tasted weird in the sandwich. Their sandwiches are not huge, but for me that's ok because I don't want to eat leftover toasted sandwiches. But apparently, they are working on getting bigger sandwiches. The people working there are super nice and helpful in describing their sandwiches. I also like the Richmond decorations found throughout the restaurant. When it is crowded, it's really tight inside and it would have been nice to have an outdoor seating area because the AC was turned pretty high.
