TL;DR: If it wasn't for the Quizno's like toaster, these sandwiches would be inedible (and no, it's not the staff's fault). Did they change their ingredients? Bread?? What happened since 2020? I was so excited to try again after a pandemic induced work travel hiatus. My gosh the disappointment. Here is my honest review of attempt one and (flight delay induced) attempt 2. Then a few suggestions for others who have limited/no options and want to try. --Untoasted: Could not finish, became nauseous (the turkey and/or provolone). --Toasted: Dipped in BBQ sauce to mask the taste of turkey wherever it piled up. Get it: toasted! Whole wheat drier but more depth and flavor. Meat: The turkey: slimy, wet, toaster helps evaporate it somewhat but if you told me it'd been opened 3 weeks ago or was Hillshire Farms...I'd believe you. Was going to get chicken the second time..but then saw the faux-grilled chicken Suggest: Red meat, heavily seasoned. If not kosher/halal, salami could work...but they don't have mozzarella. Cheese: Cheddar only not bad tasting one. Provolone had pass. Who goes for Swiss?? Sugeest: cheddar (and they add more options!) Vegetables: flavorless, definitely not fresh. Suggest: justified in skipping; likely no nutrients left anyways. Pickles, roasted red bell pepper, maybe the cucumber (didn't try) could be good. Onions would be, but they don't add until after toasting (honestly, tomatoes couod be salvaged if they toasted). Sauce: necessary. BBQ sauce can cover a multitude of sin. Suggest ask for it on the side to dip in. Overall, I would suggest the Mediterranean. It's so heavily sauced and the only option with a strong cheese (feta). Hard to mess that up. Sadly their Italian uses provolone instead of mozzarella...so hard pass. Better than: McDonalds, Subway, Jimmy Deans. read more

I'm giving only three stars because the first assembly line team member was super grumpy and unfriendly. The first person you interact with doesn't have to be Chick-fil-A happy but at least don't just stare at me blankly and looked irritated when I ask what type of bread is depicted in the marketing poster. The second person (post-oven) didn't ask me for any additional toppings, also was not very friendly or engaging, and handed me my sandwich with such apathy for his job. I hope this brand is responsible for my abdomen as of the date of this review and not my failure to exercise. I ordered the Veggie Melt with all the toppings and a Fudge Cookie with a Coke. I was thankful for this meal. After takeout this was one of the sloppiest sandwiches I had eaten in a long time. The sandwich was full of raw, tasteless mushrooms, that could have been moistened or sautéed. I was relieved to taste the cheddar. There was a little too much mayonnaise, yet I was glad to be eating a good vegetable quota. The cookie was too sweet with a pleasant mositness. The Coke was fresh. The service was standard, friendly and polite. However, the server who made my sandwich may not had properly added the topping so they would not have spilled from the bread. COVID RISK - UNSAFE with management approval - Not following safe practice. I walked in and immediately noticed an employee sitting with no mask texting on her phone. I sat there for a minute to see if maybe she was eating or blowing her nose. No, she was just hanging out, and guess what, the manager was sitting across from her. This employee was sitting 3' feet from the line where people order, inside. I said "Excuse me can you please put your mask on you are right next to the line" and she just stared at me, didn't respond. Looked at me like "you are the problem" so attitude and violating the law AND making people unsafe. The person sitting across from the employee was the manager. He didn't tell her to put mask on, but instead decides to lecture me about how "It's totally fine, she is sitting down she does not have to wear a mask" DON'T TAKE THE RISK I have filed complaints with DC Department of Health and Mayors office. This is the best Potbelly I have been to. They always greet with a smile and are extremely polite and customer-oriented. My to-go orders are always ready on time. One pet peeve is that sometimes I have gotten the wrong type of bread on a pickup order. I assume it's because they were out of the right type of bread, but it would be better to be warned of that (or perhaps compensated with a free cookie :) ). Well. I haven't tasted the sandwiches yet, but they clearly think I was born yesterday with this milkshake drama. The employee had a hard time scooping for the milkshake, and the amount of ice cream she used made that evident. My second shake is half empty (exaggerating but still.) When I inquired about a top off, she said "I can't because the ice cream is frozen but honestly, that's how full it's supposed to be." Fail. I won't be back. I've ordered here about 5x, 3 on the website, twice in-person and staff have been nice and they manage what a lot of other sandwich shops miss, which is keep the toppings consistent and good. Three and a half stars. Alli is obsessed with their dressing. Like, stock-a-stash-in-the-fridge obsessed. Considering the Subway franchise across the street is way less consistent about stocking their chips and has all the feel of a gritty cafeteria, Potbelly's a nice alternative for something quick, cheapish, and relatively healthy. Delivery's an option if you break the $25 minimum and are willing to shell out another $3.50 surcharge. Sandwich assembly chick is friendly, my Wreck was toasted and condimented perfectly (I'd intended to get the salad version until I saw the Bigs were cheaper than the salads). In her infinite wisdom, Kat claimed I was pregnant in order to justify ordering my berry coffee milkshakes. That's okay. I'll give this Potbelly shop 2 stars because the customer service was excellent! However, the food was not worth the price! I normally get a turkey club anytime I decide to eat at Potbelly's, but that's no longer available. I then decided to try the small Chicken club sandwich, and I know for a fact that I could have done a better job making this sandwich that I paid about $18.00 for. The sandwich was extra because I asked for extra bacon. I don't feel I want to go to Potbelly's again. I think I ate there at least once per week. I would put an order online or fax, and go downstairs to pick up my order. At 11:30, that place was literally like a zoo. The best part of Potbelly sandwiches for me was the spicy pickle that they put in the sandwich. It gave it an extra kick to spice up my day. They also have incredible root beer floats, pizza sandwiches, and salads. I visited DC a couple years ago, and I went to the same Potbellys location. The first bite I took in, I was in heaven. I am a big fan of Potbelly and always have been. Their warm, toasted sandwiches and smoothies make me happy. My favorite sandwich is the tuna salad on wheat bread. I highly recommend the hot peppers- I have a jar at home because they are so delicious. I typically go with a mixed berry smoothie to top everything off. During their rush hour, this is probably one of the most unorganized locations I've been to, under this franchise. When it's calm, you can get what you need and just be on your way. But when it's busy, they seem to lose their mind, and customer service drops, and quality drops. I would say half of the associates just became frustrated and even started making each other mad. When I came in, it seems that there were some mistakes made with some orders, and there were a bunch of people waiting extra long. The loading station gentleman was very polite. After that it was just a mess. My sandwich was a mess. And I got out of there as fast as possible. It for sure felt like most of the associates just don't want to be there. In my opinion. First off - what other establishment would write a letter APOLOGIZING for raising sandwich prices? These guys know how to operate a business. The employees are cheerful and embrace what they do, and I've been able to have enjoyable service, quality conversation, and sometimes a free cookie. I will not waste your time describing the place or process in full, as to not get sick to your stomach while I worship this lunch and light dinner Mecca. All I wish to tell you is come in and see for yourself firsthand. You will be treated not just as some dude in a line, but an educated consumer making a wise lunch/dinner decision. Quick and quality? You can find it at the sandwich joint with all the cool antiques inside. The sandwiches are not earth-shattering large, which is perfect. The soups are fresh and well prepared, as are the salads - and their shakes are beyond amazing (as one friend pointed out, a great cure for hangovers). Other fun notes: 1. Check out their website to get the full story behind the place, it's really neat. 2. The musicians make a great touch, but be careful about the one in Farragut North by 19th and L - he managed to butcher one of my favorite songs of all time. That aside, it's still a great touch that ads to this place's uniquely attractive character. 3. For a great option, order the PBJ with Bananas - it may be an extra 50 cent charge, but one of their employees suggested it to me once and it definitely did not disappoint. 4. I think Potbelly offers more variety of options and homemade flavor when compared to Subway. In short, it's a nice option for a chain (in my humble opinion). Now, it doesn't compare to many of DC's local sandwich shops, but those aren't always convenient or available. In case you've never visited a location, Potbelly offers made to order sandwiches (either hot or cold), a limited variety of soups, homemade desserts, dill pickles and chips. Their cold beverage selection is solid, and their fountain sodas are all-natural. This particular location is near the VanNess Metro stop. It's an orderly little shop with limited indoor seating. There's a small outdoor patio area as well. The shop's staff is sometimes a bit short, and it can get quite busy on school days, but those "issues" are minor, nothing that would deter you from a visit. read more
