Always busy and set up for families or large groups. Two if us were staying one night and were told to call down 1/2 hour before we wanted to eat. We did and were told to come down in an hour, at which time we were told that people were not leaving and we had to wait longer. When we checked in we were given a menu and advised to study it. We were starving and really looking forward to a meal. The menu selection is huge and the volume they are putting out to families and groups is considerable. The food we ordered came quickly and was just so-so. The crab cakes were large but burnt on both sides. The bacon wrapped shrimp were not "large tiger shrimp" but small cocktail shrimp deep fried with bacon around them. They came on a saucer! We had one Game Kabob that was inedible it was so tough. The Pear and Asiago salad however was delicious and the bread was warm and fresh. The salad and the bread would have saved this review had we not had the other items. The day we checked out we had hoped to get breakfast but at 8 AM there were several people trying to do so as well and not enough staff. The host complained there was nobody to clear tables. Came here for my birthday dinner upon recommendation from our hotel in Keystone. WOW. What a meal! Started with the artichoke dip appetizer (yum) & had the Buffalo meatloaf (wrapped in bacon) with sweet potato casserole for my main course. So much food that I was able it to eat it for leftovers the next day and it all warmed up just fine. Powder House is ohhhhh so delicious & had amazing service. Loved the log cabin interior decor. My husband and I have now experienced breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Powder House and brought guests a couple of times. Breakfast this morning was good, but slightly disappointing. The service was wonderful as always. I tried the stuffed French toast and discovered that stuffed was an overstatement. There was little to no sweet cream involved which is the 'stuffed' portion. The biscuits were more dense than fluffy. We enjoyed the bulk of the breakfast; however, we much prefer the lunches & dinners. I highly recommend those meals. read more

Amazing! We went just before 4pm, when they open. There was already a line. My husband had beef filet mignon, I had the 16 oz buffalo prime rib, and our son had the elk medallion. The service was great, and I liked the restaurant's ambiance and the interesting menu. Everything was ruined by the chef. They took medallions and they were as hard as shue and bland as cardboard: no salt, no taste, and not edible at all. I tried elk and buffalo in different restaurants throughout America and love them because of their tenderness and great taste but not in this place. Sauces were bland and tasteless, and the mashed potatoes tasted like glue. From the kids' menu, the most eatable was the French fries. That is it. "Mac and cheese" was a fake dish, it is just terribly made with macaroni and cheap cheese them even a child will not it this. If you are coming to Keystone for Mount Rushmore or for any other reason this is where you should come for dinner. I was there this past Monday night and even with the tourist season coming to an end this restaurant was busy. I think a lot of locals come here to dine which speaks well to the quality of the food. They have a weird no reservations policy so instead they ask you to call them about 45 minutes before your arrival so they can put you on a waitlist. Then when you arrive hopefully your wait will be short. Thats what I did and I only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table after I arrived. Inside its all wood resembling a log cabin with many pictures of the monument and other local attractions. I think Powder House has been around for a long time and after eating at the restaurant I understand why. For dinner, I chose the walleye entree with a side dish of wild rice for $21.49. It came with a side salad too. The salad arrived first along with a bread basket. It had quality greens, tomato, red onion and corn with my ranch dressing and was very good tasting. Then the walleye arrived being pan fried with a dusting of flour and light butter. I enjoyed it and the wild rice was just as good. It was a delicious meal. Also, the table service was prompt and professional. The next morning I also had breakfast here. Why? Because there is only one restaurant in Keystone that serves breakfast except for Tuesdays when it doesn't and this happened to be a Tuesday. My luck! The breakfast crowd at Powder House was much, much smaller that morning. I ordered 2 eggs, toast and hash browns for about $7.50 and it was all good. After 2 visits, I'll admit I am partial to this restaurant now. Come eat here and you will enjoy it. I like the atmosphere, location and of course the food. We were out of Mount Rushmore and we were hungry for lunch, we read a few good reviews and decided to give it a try. We stopped by this beautiful log style restaurant and lodge. We started with the Artichoke dip (very good) and crackers and the Cheese sticks with marinara sauce (Crispy but not gooey cheese inside). Then we ordered (four) entrees: Portobello mushroom with avocado spread vegetarian burger (delicious). The California Turkey club with avocado (just ok). The Buffalo stew with vegetables served on a bread bowl (personally I like anything on a bread bowl, and if anyone had a soup on a bread bowl at Panera, there is nothing greater////. With that point made, the Buffalo stew was ok, not great, the bread was not crispy, it was thick, doughy and should, in the future, my suggestion to the chef, the bread bowl should be buttered before you heat it in the oven so that it gets crispy and the outside is sealed). Last entree was the prime rib philly cheese steak sandwich with fries, it was cooked just right, only one slight complaint, the bread to meat ratio was off, lots of meat, not enough bread, meat was falling off the bread. The food was good and not so good. My wife had a pasta with scallops and shrimp which was really rich, but very good. I had the bacon wrapped trout which I found disappointing. I normally really like trout, but this was so heavily wrapped in bacon that the bacon was all you could taste. Salad and bread were good, and the service was very good as well. Stopped in after a long day at the Buffalo Roundup. This place was magic to our eyes and tummies! We had the daily special a baseball cut steak with a bourbon peppercorn sauce. I had the mashed potatoes (huge serving) and my husband had a baked potato. We each had a house salad, part of the meal. Well done and delicious! Bread served as well. We were too full for dessert, my husband had a local lager abs I had an Australian Shiraz. Inside is pine cabiny cozy! A real delight! We stayed in one of the cabins so ended up eating dinner once and breakfast twice. Both breakfasts were better than the dinner. We had dinner the day that we arrived since we just finished a long drive. My wife had the prime rib and baked potato which was OK but not great. I had a fish special which was baked walleye in bread crumbs and pesto with vegetables. The pesto had no flavor at all. I was amazed at the lack of even a hint of taste. The fish itself was very bony, but maybe I'm just not used to walleye. It came with a side of mixed vegetables that were either boiled or steamed. It was hard to tell because of the amount of water they were swimming in. I'm leaning towards boiled because they also didn't have much flavor. Both breakfasts, on the other hand, were pretty good but basic. Breakfast #1 I had a ham cheddar mushroom omelet with sourdough toast and potatoes. My wife had biscuits and gravy. Breakfast #2 I had a breakfast burrito (which weirdly came with cheese on top). My wife had hotcakes with eggs, meat, and potatoes. It could have been a 5 star. We dined there a couple years back when we were in South Dakota and loved it. We were very much looking forward to eating here. We shared a rib eye steak (ordered the one with bone in, larger one) which should have been perfect for two. The service was very good, the waitress even split the portion in two plates (they do charge $5 more for split plate fee) but we weren't hungry enough for two dinners. After a few bites, we realized, where is the bone? We asked the waitress who admitted typing it in wrong. She did offer to take it back or offer us a discount. We felt bad about sending it back for the kitchen to throw out, and thought the discount was a nice gesture, thinking maybe just waive the split plate fee or something. The bill came and we were charged for the smaller steak full price. Brought to waitress attention who said she asked the manager, who said the other steak was less expensive. No joke, it was that price on the menu. No discounts were now offered. So, even though the steak was great, we walked out with a negative vibe. We tipped less than we would have if we were given the "promised discount". Hopefully, the manager will see this and tip the waitress a few dollars that she cost her. The waitress probably shouldn't have offered a discount without checking first, and the manager has no customer service skills, after their employee made a mistake and backing up what their employee offered. We could have said no, we want what we ordered, and they could have tossed the $29 steak in the garbage. The food is great, but management is extremely poor, and makes us wonder if we would want to return again. Sad. read more

We recently did a 12 day trip in SD, MT, and WY. This was the first meal of our trip and really set the bar high for all the meals to come after. We were a foursome and while waiting for our table, enjoyed beers and margaritas on the patio by the fireplace. It set the tone nicely for the meal to come. We started with the kabobs (one per couple) to share. It featured a skewer of buffalo, elk, and vension with mushrooms and onions in between the meat layers. Yum. If I ever go back, I might just order a skewer (or two) for myself and call it my meal. For our mains, the men got the bbq buffalo short ribs and the ladies had the prime rib. I love prime rib and this was cooked perfectly at medium rare. The horseradish added the right touch and the twice baked potatoe was a little cold, but tasty enough. We were stuffed and passed on dessert. BTW... you should never pass on dessert on vacation. :) Total per couple with tip, but not including our beers or margaritas was $90.00. First off - service was EXCELLENT from the waitstaff. But when we entered the restaurant we were asked in a very negative manner by an elderly hostess if we had called ahead (we had). The food was marginal at best. My elk was well done although it was supposed to be served medium rare. I actually asked for it rare, if I hadn't I'm guessing it would have been flaming when it came to me. It was a hockey puck that I could not cut. The waitress did a great job and brought me another. So you assume dinner starts at 3 if you're quickly checking when lunch ends. Nope. If you read the rest of the sign, it says dinner is at 4. So I'm not sure what happens between 3&4. But we arrived 15 minutes to 3 wanting the dinner menu. Our veggie mushroom burgers were pretty good, but my husband was literally given one tiny red onion ring. Charming, darling, sweet! We stayed at the lodge up the hill and enjoyed our dinner night #1 so much that we returned again for dinner on night #2. Reservations are not allowed, however, there is a text wait list that you can get on which was really slick. Service was exceptional and every employee was positive, kind and helpful. The ambiance is a darker vibe - almost parallel to a supper club and every employee is dressed very nicely. Because it shares property with the on-site lodge, there is a combo entry that has a check-in for the lodge (with various body products and little snacks for sale) and a check-in for the restaurant. Seating for food was seamless and between both visits we had the Asiago Salad topped with added chicken and a glass of Red Ass Rhubarb wine and Calamity Jane (both local wines to SD) and the Zesty Orange Chicken Bowl (jaw dropping flavorful). The secondary evening we got super lucky and were seated in an outdoor space with a fireplace. It was so dreamy! I had no idea it existed since it's tucked a bit behind the main dining area but I'm sure glad we got the opportunity to do so. If you are in Keystone, this is certainly a spot I'd recommend for a more upscale meal with great service. Fabulous! read more

My wife and I were on vacation at Mt. Rushmore and we decided to go out for some dinner. They were doing a good job of masking up for COVID. I ordered an IPA to start out. It was a super hoppy IPA and it was a pretty big can, so it lasted the whole meal. I ordered a side Caesar salad, which came out first and super fresh with lots of croutons and a nice tangy Caesar dressing, good size portion too! I ordered an Elk Burger, which was delicious and juicy and huge slices of tomatoes and pickles and fresh lettuce. A lot leaner than a chuck burger, very solid. Then we also, ordered a kebab with venison, buffalo and elk. Lots of added grilled veggies (The mushroom was wonderful and full). The meats were all tender and great. It comes with a teriyaki dipping sauce that I tried after having a bite of each meat without the sauce. I would recommend the sauce. Lots of people were inside, but it felt like people were giving their distance. Great service and fast delivery. Good stuff read more
