We chose Dakota Steakhouse because of its reputation and were excited to introduce our family friends--who are Natives from the area and had never dined there before--to what we hoped would be a memorable dinner. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences we've had. The evening started with a confusing interaction with the hostess, who walked away from us and then acted as though she had already told us to follow her. Our server, Sig, made things worse. We were a party of six, including our family friend's mother, who has ALS, and his attitude was abrasive, argumentative, and anything but welcoming. When my wife ordered the roasted chicken, he responded, "You ordered the worst thing on the menu." That's simply not how guests should be treated. I ordered the $72 Tatanka Filet, medium, but it arrived well done. When I pointed it out, the explanation I received was that "toward the end of the night the grill is hot." At that price, I expected an apology and an offer to correct it, not an excuse. Even at the end of the meal, the service remained poor. When we asked for to-go boxes, Sig reached across the table and passed them directly in front of our faces instead of handing them to us courteously. Everyone can have an off night, but what disappointed us most was that no one acknowledged the issues or attempted to make things right. For a restaurant with Dakota Steakhouse's reputation and prices, we expected excellent hospitality. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome and disappointed. I have been going to this restaurant about monthly/bimonthly for the past 3 years. It was one of my favorites and we referred a lot of our clients here as well. The food was always pretty good. The environment is calm and decor is nice. The way this place is being ran and the customer service is not, namely the management. Problem 1: We asked to move two tables together on a not very busy night. They had already filled their bigger tables for the night and there was plenty of room for us to do so without disturbing anyone else or interrupting any other guests. This would have made our night so much better so we could socialize with our group of 10. When I talked to the Manager, she said they couldn't do it that night. I asked why, and her response was due to her servers. I guess servers come before customer service. Both servers had talked to us prior and said they didn't mind. One of our servers was nice and accommodating, but we waited 1 hour for our food from the time we sat down. Problem 2: What was once called "The Cowboy Bone" steak was a much larger Tomahawk steak than the one they are serving now. It also increased from $72 - $92. You're getting less and paying more! Overall: I would still go here if they made a few simple changes to how they handled situations from the management level. A simple nice gesture of letting us move our table could have made this a pleasant experience for our group, and really wouldn't have been that much trouble. I understand beef prices have went up, but you can't shrink your portions and raise your prices. One of our 2 waiters could check on our drinks a little more as we were always having to stop him to ask for more to drink In the hour we waited for food. When you're paying top dollar for their food, I don't think It is much to ask to have good service. Do better! read more

It was my friend's birthday so I tried to find a restaurant that was close to our hotel where we could walk. This was perfect, although they did not give her anything special for her birthday. We bought a bottle of wine before dinner in the bar and then we brought it to our table. We had a hard time making decision on what to order because there were so many choices. We decided to get a sirloin steak and then share our sides because you're allowed only one side. I had the soup, she had the salad. We had delicious Indian fry bread that came with our meal. The place was good. The service was kind and it's a nice western ambiance. I got the prime rib dip. It was a little too dry. The flavor of the meat was good, but the dip was also salty so when paired together it was a bit much. Our table also got a sirloin steak, the beef tips, and a burger. The burger was great, steak was good (nothing crazy), and the steak tips were paired with a great sauce but a bit chewy. I loved the fries that were paired with mine- they were perfectly crispy and flavored. The best part of the meal however, was the BREAD. It was soooo good!!! Almost donut-like. Our server was ok. It took some time before she took our order and uncorked the wine which she didn't pour. It was quite the wait for our food to be delivered to the table. When it arrived, the sandwich one of our party ordered was cold. The server took it back say she'll bring a new sandwich. It arrived in less than five minutes still cold. First time going there and it was definitely worth it! Super super expensive though for the area. The Buffalo filet made me really sleepy haha. Service was good nothing special. It was alright. Not many options for gf diners. Split the cowboy ribeye w my partner. It took a really long time to arrive bc the kitchen was backed up since they were nearly empty; once it did arrive it was cooked to the wrong temp. We requested medium rare and it arrived very bloody rare. The meat was very tough and hard to chew, if you like more chew in your cuts then this has that. Ordered our salad gf and it arrived w croutons. However, the balsamic carrots were delicious. Our kids got the steak tips with fries. Fries were delicious but the steak tips were over cooked, unseasoned, and past well done so it seems meat temps may be a challenge here. For dessert we did the sundae, creme brulee, and cheesecake which were delicious. The house-made whipped cream had an odd flavor though, not sure if they use non cows milk maybe, it's not sweet and had a slight funk. Dakotah Steakhouse in Rapid City SD was a pleasant surprise! We started with Pheasant Poppers that was accompanied a delightful raspberry bbq sauce. Crunchy and delicious! I had Steak Tips with mushroom and onion a baked potato loaded with a house salad and their house rolls which tasted amazing! We can't remember which steak my husband had, but he really liked it. Everything was seasoned well and our server Sigland was attentive and knowledgeable about our menu choices! It was early (4pm) but the restaurant was rustic and inviting, clean and we got right in. This restaurant was located across the street from our hotel, the Fairfield Inn and Suites, so I checked Yelp for input. We decided to give it a try and we were so glad we did! The ambiance is quite cool with its cowboy motif and pictures of the Amercian Indians that survived the Little Big Horn Battle of 1876. The service was excellent, and the food was amazing! Let's start with our server, Sara (also known as Nash so as not to be confused with the other server named Sarah). She was so much fun and quite accommodating. Her smile, attentiveness and great personality complimented our visit immensely. Hats off to Sara for doing such a great job! We started off with specialty vodka martinis made with pomegranate. They were so good we ordered another round during dinner! We looked over the steak menu and saw that your selection would be served with fresh fry bread and honey bourbon butter, a cup of soup or house salad and choice of side. We chose a cup of the "Soup of the Day" which was a meatball and potato soup with a velvety broth like French Onion. It was so excellent! We told Sara to please compliment the chef as the soup was that amazing. We then feasted on the 7 oz. Filet Mignons, which were seared to a perfect Medium Rare, topped with a savory cowboy butter and Haystack onions. We added the accompaniment of the Blackened Spice Rub & Blue Cheese Bechamel (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) The taste was heavenly! Our side of choice was the Roasted Brussels Sprouts, which were shredded rather than served whole or in halves. We both thought it added to the flavor of the sprouts themselves. My husband and I were at Dakotah Steakhouse on Valentine's Day and had a reservation near the fireplace. The other two tables were full of patrons, one table had six and I think the other table had five. All tables had the same server. With that said, we should have been just as important as the other tables even if our bill (and her tip) wasn't going to be as large as the other tables. There were things she offered or that we asked for that were never delivered to us and wrong items brought to our table. I understand she was busy, but perhaps she needed some help on such a busy evening. We both ordered ribeyes. One well done and the other medium well. Both were undercooked and looked raw. We chose not to send them back or say anything to the server because she was overwhelmed and inattentive. However, if you spend that kind of money on a ribeye you expect it to be cooked to your liking. The whole experience was disappointing especially because I had made these reservations in December for Valentine's Day and we were looking forward to a romantic dinner and great food. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. We will never patronize your restaurant again. We could have gotten better food at Longhorn Steakhouse and more attentiveness from the server. This is one of our go to places when we have guests from out of town or out of state. My husband gives me a hard time, but I love the walleye selections. Their steak is always good and cooked to perfection. Rarely have room for dessert, their creme brûlée and apple crisp are really good. We always make a reservation as it can be busy. read more

Waitress was nice/ attentive/ helpful but missed a bit of personal touch. And frankly... if you're charging that much per plate, your waitress should have a bit of personality and etiquette . I live in Central Indiana and we have local high end steak houses like Dakotah .. which is my basis for this review. The add on shrimp scampi had zero flavor and after one bite we brought this to the attention of our waitress.... She did let the cook staff know who sent back to our table with a little garlic on it this time .. still not good . The steak was a low grade quality , definitely not the high quality I've found at other local steak restaurants at this same price point. Probably the only "nice" steakhouse in the Rapid City area although I could be wrong as it was the only one that popped up on my search. Hostess could care less if you had a reservation or not. Place wasn't too packed and plenty of empty tables AND we had a reservation yet were told to wait 10 minutes....it was ok as we had just landed and drive straight here so bathroom breaks were in order. Our server was awesome and attentive so there's ONE STAR for you! STAR TWO is for the great Buffalo statue out front. Food was just myeh. Half of us enjoyed it. Sucks for our first meal in SD. I had the filet and it was tough and bland. Very disappointing. My mom had the walleye and again VERY disappointing as it lacked any flavor. Downright terrible. The burger my nephew had was "good" but then again, it's a burger. My Dad had a cut of steak and said it was "good" too. Nothing to rave home about. For the price and scale of this restaurant it fell very short of starting our culinary journey in South Dakota. After a long day of traveling and all the delays yesterday I finally arrived in Rapid City and made it to my appointment with literally minutes to spare. Shouldn't I treat myself tonight? Menu is mostly steaks and I see Kansas City Strip Steak. In all my years I've never had this. Kat assures me that I will like it. Comes with soup or salad and a side. I chose bacon wrapped asparagus. BACON, how can you go wrong. Kat, oh Kat, brings my salad and drink. Shortly after I'm done with the salad my steak arrives. Kat keeps checking back to make sure I'm pleased with everything. I certainly don't mind because first, she is clearly sincere and very easy to look at. This Kansas City Strip Steak is one of the best steaks I've had. Was it the steak or Kat. No, no it was the steak. Kat was just a side. I always pay with my business credit card and when it's out of my possession for too long I get a little nervous. Especially in these times. Overall a great experience. I came in when the restaurant opened, as it was the week of the Sturgis Bike Rally and I wanted to beat the crowd. The only negative about my experience was the smell...the restaurant smelled kind of unpleasant when I walked in...but wasn't notable by the time I left. Otherwise, the experience was great. I had a very energetic and outgoing server. I got the bison spare ribs. I'm shocked to say that their BBQ sauce was some of the BEST I've ever had. It was incredible. It truly made the meal. When you order a $50 filet and they give you an overcooked sirloin that you could've gotten for $18.95 at Perkins.... you know you're at Dakotah steakhouse. When the manager at the Taco Bell treats you with tremendously more respect - say it with me folks - "you know that you're at Dakotah steakhouse".
