It was my friend's birthday so I tried to find a restaurant that was close to our hotel where we could walk. This was perfect, although they did not give her anything special for her birthday. We bought a bottle of wine before dinner in the bar and then we brought it to our table. We had a hard time making decision on what to order because there were so many choices. We decided to get a sirloin steak and then share our sides because you're allowed only one side. I had the soup, she had the salad. We had delicious Indian fry bread that came with our meal. The place was good. The service was kind and it's a nice western ambiance. I got the prime rib dip. It was a little too dry. The flavor of the meat was good, but the dip was also salty so when paired together it was a bit much. Our table also got a sirloin steak, the beef tips, and a burger. The burger was great, steak was good (nothing crazy), and the steak tips were paired with a great sauce but a bit chewy. I loved the fries that were paired with mine- they were perfectly crispy and flavored. The best part of the meal however, was the BREAD. It was soooo good!!! Almost donut-like. First time going there and it was definitely worth it! Super super expensive though for the area. The Buffalo filet made me really sleepy haha. Service was good nothing special. It was alright. Not many options for gf diners. Split the cowboy ribeye w my partner. It took a really long time to arrive bc the kitchen was backed up since they were nearly empty; once it did arrive it was cooked to the wrong temp. We requested medium rare and it arrived very bloody rare. The meat was very tough and hard to chew, if you like more chew in your cuts then this has that. Ordered our salad gf and it arrived w croutons. However, the balsamic carrots were delicious. Our kids got the steak tips with fries. Fries were delicious but the steak tips were over cooked, unseasoned, and past well done so it seems meat temps may be a challenge here. For dessert we did the sundae, creme brulee, and cheesecake which were delicious. The house-made whipped cream had an odd flavor though, not sure if they use non cows milk maybe, it's not sweet and had a slight funk. Dakotah Steakhouse in Rapid City SD was a pleasant surprise! We started with Pheasant Poppers that was accompanied a delightful raspberry bbq sauce. Crunchy and delicious! I had Steak Tips with mushroom and onion a baked potato loaded with a house salad and their house rolls which tasted amazing! We can't remember which steak my husband had, but he really liked it. Everything was seasoned well and our server Sigland was attentive and knowledgeable about our menu choices! It was early (4pm) but the restaurant was rustic and inviting, clean and we got right in. I was completely dismissed after ernestly trying to rectify THEIR mistake. I've worked in this industry for decades. Big red flag. This is off season and they weren't busy. My husband and I were at Dakotah Steakhouse on Valentine's Day and had a reservation near the fireplace. The other two tables were full of patrons, one table had six and I think the other table had five. All tables had the same server. With that said, we should have been just as important as the other tables even if our bill (and her tip) wasn't going to be as large as the other tables. There were things she offered or that we asked for that were never delivered to us and wrong items brought to our table. I understand she was busy, but perhaps she needed some help on such a busy evening. We both ordered ribeyes. One well done and the other medium well. Both were undercooked and looked raw. We chose not to send them back or say anything to the server because she was overwhelmed and inattentive. However, if you spend that kind of money on a ribeye you expect it to be cooked to your liking. The whole experience was disappointing especially because I had made these reservations in December for Valentine's Day and we were looking forward to a romantic dinner and great food. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. We will never patronize your restaurant again. We could have gotten better food at Longhorn Steakhouse and more attentiveness from the server. This restaurant was located across the street from our hotel, the Fairfield Inn and Suites, so I checked Yelp for input. We decided to give it a try and we were so glad we did! The ambiance is quite cool with its cowboy motif and pictures of the Amercian Indians that survived the Little Big Horn Battle of 1876. The service was excellent, and the food was amazing! Let's start with our server, Sara (also known as Nash so as not to be confused with the other server named Sarah). She was so much fun and quite accommodating. Her smile, attentiveness and great personality complimented our visit immensely. Hats off to Sara for doing such a great job! We started off with specialty vodka martinis made with pomegranate. They were so good we ordered another round during dinner! We looked over the steak menu and saw that your selection would be served with fresh fry bread and honey bourbon butter, a cup of soup or house salad and choice of side. We chose a cup of the "Soup of the Day" which was a meatball and potato soup with a velvety broth like French Onion. It was so excellent! We told Sara to please compliment the chef as the soup was that amazing. We then feasted on the 7 oz. Filet Mignons, which were seared to a perfect Medium Rare, topped with a savory cowboy butter and Haystack onions. We added the accompaniment of the Blackened Spice Rub & Blue Cheese Bechamel (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) The taste was heavenly! Probably the only "nice" steakhouse in the Rapid City area although I could be wrong as it was the only one that popped up on my search. Hostess could care less if you had a reservation or not. Place wasn't too packed and plenty of empty tables AND we had a reservation yet were told to wait 10 minutes....it was ok as we had just landed and drive straight here so bathroom breaks were in order. Our server was awesome and attentive so there's ONE STAR for you! STAR TWO is for the great Buffalo statue out front. Food was just myeh. Half of us enjoyed it. Sucks for our first meal in SD. I had the filet and it was tough and bland. Very disappointing. My mom had the walleye and again VERY disappointing as it lacked any flavor. Downright terrible. The burger my nephew had was "good" but then again, it's a burger. My Dad had a cut of steak and said it was "good" too. Nothing to rave home about. For the price and scale of this restaurant it fell very short of starting our culinary journey in South Dakota. We all wished we had stopped at Arby's down the road instead...same quality but at least would have tasted better. Sorry, just being honest. First this is more in line with a high level steak house. I'm seated immediately and my waitress, Kat, arrives immediately. Oh Kat. Don't let me get off tract. Menu is mostly steaks and I see Kansas City Strip Steak. In all my years I've never had this. Kat assures me that I will like it. Comes with soup or salad and a side. I chose bacon wrapped asparagus. BACON, how can you go wrong. Kat, oh Kat, brings my salad and drink. Shortly after I'm done with the salad my steak arrives. Kat keeps checking back to make sure I'm pleased with everything. I certainly don't mind because first, she is clearly sincere and very easy to look at. This Kansas City Strip Steak is one of the best steaks I've had. Was it the steak or Kat. No, no it was the steak. Kat was just a side. I always pay with my business credit card and when it's out of my possession for too long I get a little nervous. Especially in these times. Overall a great experience. I came in when the restaurant opened, as it was the week of the Sturgis Bike Rally and I wanted to beat the crowd. The only negative about my experience was the smell...the restaurant smelled kind of unpleasant when I walked in...but wasn't notable by the time I left. Otherwise, the experience was great. I had a very energetic and outgoing server. I got the bison spare ribs. I'm shocked to say that their BBQ sauce was some of the BEST I've ever had. It was incredible. It truly made the meal. I had recently eaten at Longhorn and had a good experience, but Dakotah was right across the street from the hotel so quicker to get to. Arrived before 5pm so Happy hour. Sat at the bar. Ordered the house Merlot. Did not find out until I reviewed the check that this was not covered under Happy Hour discounts? Strange for a house wine. $10 compared to Longhorn's $7.99 large pour. Ordered the Elk Ravioli. Good but not great. $32 which is very reasonable. The heavy cream sauce overwhelmed the elk flavor unfortunately. Good size portion however. The dinner came with a very small bun and butter. I think it was called a fry bread? Very good but pretty small. Other steakhouses are a little more generous with the bread...This entree normally comes with a salad so I asked for a Caesar salad. I asked for the anchovies that were mentioned in the menu. The bartender did mention an up charge so can't fault here there. $8 was a bit excessive however. The Caesar was way too big for a side salad and was a little dry. This can happen when they serve hearts of romaine and the dressing is not enough to address the "hearts" or salad underneath the hearts. A total of 4 croutons and some sort of crisp. Don't really think of croutons as a high food cost item so strange that they were so sparse. Flies in the restaurant were a problem. Hard to control that but not pleasant. Bartender was efficient but not especially attentive. Another server/bartend was consuming something (a beverage?) behind the bar in full view of the customers which is not health department approved I would imagine? I was excited to end my South Dakota trip at Dakotah Steakhouse. This is a modern and quite large western steakhouse on the eastern side of Rapid City. It is quite popular with reservations recommended, however they still do a brisk carryout business as well. Parking is decent. The inside of the restaurant was quite nice with a very high ceiling and lots of western rustic decor. I sat in the bar section at a booth and had a good view of the TV and bar. At 5:00 on a Friday, the place was already filling up for dinner with lots of families. Everyone was really casual, so don't worry about dressing up unless you want to impress everyone! I came for the bison tenderloin and fry bread. How can you visit South Dakota and not try both? They have a good wine list with a decent glass selection, but I would actually recommend a nice bourbon cocktail for the bison. My meal began with a decent salad paired with their wonderful fry bread. Their fry bread is warm and thick with plenty of butter. The bison tenderloin was wrapped in bacon and served with a loaded baked potato. The tenderloin was a nice way to appreciate the flavor of bison and paired with the fatty bacon to help offset the leaner meat. The baked potato was good with a generous serving of toppings. Most people will be happy with eating some cow, but the addition of bison and walleye on the menu makes for a nice diversity. Dakotah Steakhouse is not cheap, but it is worth the effort for a nice meal. It's a bit away from most of Rapid City and can be crowded, but that just means it's a good place. read more

My husband and I came into town for the rally and spend time with family. We had a reservation for a party of 6 and called to add a few more people to the reservation to make it a party of 9. The woman who answered the phone was very rude, short with us and seemed like it was a hassle to add more people to the reservation. Needless to say we were a little turned off by this interaction, but still very excited to eat at this restaurant. We arrived at the restaurant with the party of 6 and were waiting for a last few members of our party. When checking in there was a short blonde woman by the name of Miranda who was rude to us when checking in. I also believe she was the woman who answered the phone when we called earlier in the day. She asked if all 9 of the party was in attendance and we said no there were only 6 as of now. She cooped an attitude asking, "sooo do you have 6 or 9 people?" Which in return we said, "we have 9 and there are 6 here now." I don't think she liked that much but turned to another young lady, who was very nice, and asked her to seat us. Now on to the food and service. Food and service were amazing. Our waitress was very attentive and did an all around great job. Let us know what the special was right away and asked if we had any questions about the menu. Food was delicious! I ordered the 6oz top sirloin medium rare with creamy Mac and cheese. Let me tell you I was NOT disappointed. The bread was warm and tastes like a funnel cake. Restaurant was beautiful looked like a log cabin inside and out.
