My wife and I were on vacation at Mt. Rushmore and we decided to go out for some dinner. They were doing a good job of masking up for COVID. I ordered an IPA to start out. It was a super hoppy IPA and it was a pretty big can, so it lasted the whole meal. I ordered a side Caesar salad, which came out first and super fresh with lots of croutons and a nice tangy Caesar dressing, good size portion too! I ordered an Elk Burger, which was delicious and juicy and huge slices of tomatoes and pickles and fresh lettuce. A lot leaner than a chuck burger, very solid. Then we also, ordered a kebab with venison, buffalo and elk. Lots of added grilled veggies (The mushroom was wonderful and full). The meats were all tender and great. It comes with a teriyaki dipping sauce that I tried after having a bite of each meat without the sauce. I would recommend the sauce. It could have been a 5 star. We dined there a couple years back when we were in South Dakota and loved it. We were very much looking forward to eating here. We shared a rib eye steak (ordered the one with bone in, larger one) which should have been perfect for two. The service was very good, the waitress even split the portion in two plates (they do charge $5 more for split plate fee) but we weren't hungry enough for two dinners. After a few bites, we realized, where is the bone? We asked the waitress who admitted typing it in wrong. She did offer to take it back or offer us a discount. We felt bad about sending it back for the kitchen to throw out, and thought the discount was a nice gesture, thinking maybe just waive the split plate fee or something. The bill came and we were charged for the smaller steak full price. Brought to waitress attention who said she asked the manager, who said the other steak was less expensive. No joke, it was that price on the menu. No discounts were now offered. So, even though the steak was great, we walked out with a negative vibe. We tipped less than we would have if we were given the "promised discount". Hopefully, the manager will see this and tip the waitress a few dollars that she cost her. The waitress probably shouldn't have offered a discount without checking first, and the manager has no customer service skills, after their employee made a mistake and backing up what their employee offered. We could have said no, we want what we ordered, and they could have tossed the $29 steak in the garbage. The food is great, but management is extremely poor, and makes us wonder if we would want to return again. Sad. read more

Charming, darling, sweet! We stayed at the lodge up the hill and enjoyed our dinner night #1 so much that we returned again for dinner on night #2. Reservations are not allowed, however, there is a text wait list that you can get on which was really slick. Service was exceptional and every employee was positive, kind and helpful. The ambiance is a darker vibe - almost parallel to a supper club and every employee is dressed very nicely. Because it shares property with the on-site lodge, there is a combo entry that has a check-in for the lodge (with various body products and little snacks for sale) and a check-in for the restaurant. Seating for food was seamless and between both visits we had the Asiago Salad topped with added chicken and a glass of Red Ass Rhubarb wine and Calamity Jane (both local wines to SD) and the Zesty Orange Chicken Bowl (jaw dropping flavorful). The secondary evening we got super lucky and were seated in an outdoor space with a fireplace. It was so dreamy! I had no idea it existed since it's tucked a bit behind the main dining area but I'm sure glad we got the opportunity to do so. If you are in Keystone, this is certainly a spot I'd recommend for a more upscale meal with great service. Fabulous! read more

Not perfect but several standouts in a town full of fast food/pizza joints so I think they deserve 4.5*. Called 45 min ahead to "reserve" a table and the method worked as we were seated right away when we showed up. The place is much bigger that the online pics and very busy on a Monday night. Our waitress was very pleasant, accidently charged us for an extra bottle of wine-(I will ALWAYS insist on checking the bill before inserting my cc into their portable machine). The food: My son's cordon bleu was soo good he made me nervous than my own home cooked one could be dethroned. I got the wild game sampler with stuffed quail instead of sausage. The buffalo short rib in bbq sauce was very good--the meat is a bit dry so the bbq sauce is a must. The stuffed quail was delicious but small so glad I had other things on the plate. The elk was absolutely inedible--cooked properly (medium rare) but so tough I couldn't even cut it with a sharp knife. They would have gotten me another proper piece of elk but instead I finished my wife's powderhouse steak-baseball sirloin covered with artichokes and bernaise--I couldn't believe how good it was. I'm very confused by all the five star reviews. We had lunch here and will not be returning. The kid's pizza was possibly the worst pizza we've ever had. It's French bread with cheap sauce and barely any cheese. The fries have no flavor. The side salads are not worth the up charge. And even the elk burger was a letdown. First off - service was EXCELLENT from the waitstaff. But when we entered the restaurant we were asked in a very negative manner by an elderly hostess if we had called ahead (we had). The food was marginal at best. My elk was well done although it was supposed to be served medium rare. I actually asked for it rare, if I hadn't I'm guessing it would have been flaming when it came to me. It was a hockey puck that I could not cut. The waitress did a great job and brought me another. Everything was done so well. Great artichoke appetizer and dinner rolls. Prime rib was perfectly done. My wife's steak was also very good, she wishes she got bone in (please no pithy comments ). Her twice baked potato was a favorite. Our waitress (Basque from Boise) was the best waitress ever. I'm a picky person, but she was instantly our best friend and confidant. We entered this charming restaurant and seated right away. Nick was our server and he paid attention to all details. The salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, A cherry tomato, a thin raw onion ring and a tiny corn cob (not pickled). Our appetizer was bruschetta. We found this a bit too saucy, becoming difficult to manage unless eaten quickly. It could have used a bit more basil as well. My friend ordered sirloin that cooked to perfection. This was the perfect place to experience some of South Dakota's game meat. Although we are not huge meat eaters we wanted to try some of the meats that South Dakota is known for. After a day in the Badlands and the long drive back, I didn't need another frozen patty buffalo burger like the two I had at the monuments. I asked my wife to find a nice sit down place to get a good meal and a beer. The Powder House was just what we needed. They gave us a choice of sitting inside or outside the wait wasn't more then 10 minutes. We sat at the Mount Rushmore table. Our waiter Adam was great and fast with the drink's (my beer), appetizer, bread, and salad. My wife got the Buffalo ribs she said they are "good very good". Thanks Honey for your insight. My son got the Game sampler. He only liked the Elk Medallion. Was not crazy about anything else. I got the Buffalo meatloaf with bacon, because bacon makes everything taste better. Two of us had the Wild Game Sampler- bison, elk and quail breast (additional for the quail). I've had bison quite a few times, but this was the best ever. They claim to have the best Prime Rib in South Dakota and they may not be wrong! Served with AuJus and a creamy horseradish sauce, it is exactly as ordered and perfect. My wife highly recommends the Shrimp Tempura- more than enough and just the right amount of batter. Everything is done right here - from the sales with the house made dressings to bread that is so good, you may want to save some for dessert- but don't. Save that room for the Crème Brûlée. Wowza! Perfect ending to our perfect meal. An excellent beer, wine and cocktail menu. This review wouldn't be complete with out a word about the service. Professional and superb! It's hard for most places to find help, let alone really really good help. That's not an issue here. The wait staff and host were fantastic and our food came out pretty quick. A few special notes, but the rest was expected. What's special? The apple Gorgonzola salad was fantastic with Granny Smith apple slices, craisins, Gorgonzola cheese and a homemade honey vinaigrette. The dressing was spectacular. I also tried a drink that mimics Harry Potter butter eat with butterscotch schnapps and creme soda. So good. The filet mignon was cooked well and the baked potato was as expected. Same for the bison burger, but nothing special. Service was very good. Extremely busy place. Had an hour wait at 5 pm on a Monday night in late September. Can do call ahead seating. One of the few good places to eat in Keystone. Service was attentive. Atmosphere was nice. We stayed here for a night in the motel room building, not bad accommodations but will probably pay the extra money next time for one of the cabins which are further away from the road. Ate breakfast here which was decently priced, came out in good time and was super good! We stayed in Hill City the next night but wasn't seeing any good reviews for restaurants so we decided to go back to Powder House for dinner and boy, was that the right decision! One star for its marketing. Nestled against the foothills, the game steakhouse had so much potential. We really wanted to love this restaurant and were really excited to dine anywhere during COVID. The place is overhyped for it's mediocre food, service, and ambience. We went here because they had "outdoor dining." Nonetheless, we were seated indoors near an entrance between two parties. We had a child, so asked to be more inland, a part from all parties but was denied. The hostess said she could not seat us there because we had to be distanced. So we sat down only later to see her seat people there and back-to-back - definitely a highest risk observation that would not pass any inspection. Plus our high chair was filthy with stains all over the foot area. Every time we asked about the menue or drinks, the waiter said: "I don't know. You'd to have look at the menue." We were appalled by the server's deameanor, lack of knowledge, and basic customer service skills. We understand we were in South Dakota, but there is no excuse. It's still a steakhouse, meals averaged $30+ pp, in a tourist location. It's like going to a mechanic, who says I don't know what's wrong with your car. You'd have to check. Or a doctor saying: "I don't know what's wrong with you. You'd have to Google it." Now onto the food. The appetizers (e.g. bacon wrapped shrimp, game kabob) came out fast, lukewarm, as if precooked and had been sotting out or reheated for the purpose of serving. The game sampler was ok - meats were cooked medium rare but lacking well married flavors. We upgraded with the quail. If you want to spilt, it's an extra $5. The quail came covered with huckleberry jam spread, some meats were smothered with what seemed like pear jam, bbq sauce also enveloped the short rib. So if you like sweet meat, and don't have any expectations, this is a good pick. The french fries stole the show. The linguini with cajun flavor was the only decent thing there, in addition to the house salads. Overall, it was a steakhouse wannabe with Applebee's service. read more

I don't know if he's related to the owner, but he knows how to treat customers. He was friendly, engaging, and attentive. Everyone restaurant needs to learn from him.
