We entered this charming restaurant and seated right away. Nick was our server and he paid attention to all details. The salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, A cherry tomato, a thin raw onion ring and a tiny corn cob (not pickled). Our appetizer was bruschetta. We found this a bit too saucy, becoming difficult to manage unless eaten quickly. It could have used a bit more basil as well. My friend ordered sirloin that cooked to perfection. My entire was chicken and artichokes served with a Bernaisse sauce. It was ample and delicious. We asked to have dessert packed to go. I most often opt for chocolate and tonight was no exception. Nick had said it was a brownie with ice cream. When I opened it up at home, I was surprised to see it was a small lava cake....not a brownie. Everything was done so well. Great artichoke appetizer and dinner rolls. Prime rib was perfectly done. My wife's steak was also very good, she wishes she got bone in (please no pithy comments ). Her twice baked potato was a favorite. Our waitress (Basque from Boise) was the best waitress ever. I'm a picky person, but she was instantly our best friend and confidant. She's a med student working through college. I know she's going to be great at whatever she undertakes. Hopefully she'll get some down time with her folks this weekend. Not perfect but several standouts in a town full of fast food/pizza joints so I think they deserve 4.5*. Called 45 min ahead to "reserve" a table and the method worked as we were seated right away when we showed up. The place is much bigger that the online pics and very busy on a Monday night. Our waitress was very pleasant, accidently charged us for an extra bottle of wine-(I will ALWAYS insist on checking the bill before inserting my cc into their portable machine). The food: My son's cordon bleu was soo good he made me nervous than my own home cooked one could be dethroned. I got the wild game sampler with stuffed quail instead of sausage. The buffalo short rib in bbq sauce was very good--the meat is a bit dry so the bbq sauce is a must. The stuffed quail was delicious but small so glad I had other things on the plate. The elk was absolutely inedible--cooked properly (medium rare) but so tough I couldn't even cut it with a sharp knife. They would have gotten me another proper piece of elk but instead I finished my wife's powderhouse steak-baseball sirloin covered with artichokes and bernaise--I couldn't believe how good it was. I'm very confused by all the five star reviews. We had lunch here and will not be returning. The kid's pizza was possibly the worst pizza we've ever had. It's French bread with cheap sauce and barely any cheese. The fries have no flavor. The side salads are not worth the up charge. And even the elk burger was a letdown. This was the perfect place to experience some of South Dakota's game meat. Although we are not huge meat eaters we wanted to try some of the meats that South Dakota is known for. After a day in the Badlands and the long drive back, I didn't need another frozen patty buffalo burger like the two I had at the monuments. They claim to have the best Prime Rib in South Dakota and they may not be wrong! Served with AuJus and a creamy horseradish sauce, it is exactly as ordered and perfect. My wife highly recommends the Shrimp Tempura- more than enough and just the right amount of batter. Everything is done right here - from the sales with the house made dressings to bread that is so good, you may want to save some for dessert- but don't. Save that room for the Crème Brûlée. Wowza! Perfect ending to our perfect meal. An excellent beer, wine and cocktail menu. This review wouldn't be complete with out a word about the service. Professional and superb! It's hard for most places to find help, let alone really really good help. That's not an issue here. The wait staff and host were fantastic and our food came out pretty quick. A few special notes, but the rest was expected. What's special? The apple Gorgonzola salad was fantastic with Granny Smith apple slices, craisins, Gorgonzola cheese and a homemade honey vinaigrette. The dressing was spectacular. I also tried a drink that mimics Harry Potter butter eat with butterscotch schnapps and creme soda. So good. The filet mignon was cooked well and the baked potato was as expected. Same for the bison burger, but nothing special. Service was very good. Extremely busy place. Had an hour wait at 5 pm on a Monday night in late September. Can do call ahead seating. One of the few good places to eat in Keystone. Service was attentive. Atmosphere was nice. We stayed here for a night in the motel room building, not bad accommodations but will probably pay the extra money next time for one of the cabins which are further away from the road. We stayed in Hill City the next night but wasn't seeing any good reviews for restaurants so we decided to go back to Powder House for dinner and boy, was that the right decision! We were in Keystone visiting Mt. Rushmore and the sights. We asked at our hotel about a good restaurant and they recommended the Powder House. From what I could see - this is about the nicest restaurant in Keystone. We did go there 2 nights in a row. They don't take reservations - but you can call 1/2 before you come and they will put you on a list for a table. We were there early enough in the season that we didn't have to wait, but our server advised us that as the summer goes on - there could be up to a 2 hour wait. This restaurant is very reasonably priced for the meal that you get. It is casual - not at all dressy and suitable for families. Drinks are super reasonable - Moscow mules were $7.50. They have a good choice of appetizers. We had the bacon wrapped shrimp which were excellent ($14). The next night we had the crab cakes (marginal - wouldn't recommend)_ I had the elk steak the first night which I wasn't thrilled with. Not a lot of taste. My husband had prime rib both nights, which he said was very good. He got the larger cut the 2nd night. The meal comes with salad and a choice of potato. The salads were nice and fresh and the french fries and baked potatoes were also good. They have an option of a twice baked for $2.99 extra -- it is big enough to serve 2 people. I had the small filet the 2nd night and it was excellent. We did not have any dessert although they do have a nice selection. Service was really good -- nice staff and very personable. One star for its marketing. Nestled against the foothills, the game steakhouse had so much potential. We really wanted to love this restaurant and were really excited to dine anywhere during COVID. The place is overhyped for it's mediocre food, service, and ambience. We went here because they had "outdoor dining." Nonetheless, we were seated indoors near an entrance between two parties. We had a child, so asked to be more inland, a part from all parties but was denied. The hostess said she could not seat us there because we had to be distanced. So we sat down only later to see her seat people there and back-to-back - definitely a highest risk observation that would not pass any inspection. Plus our high chair was filthy with stains all over the foot area. Every time we asked about the menue or drinks, the waiter said: "I don't know. You'd to have look at the menue." We were appalled by the server's deameanor, lack of knowledge, and basic customer service skills. We understand we were in South Dakota, but there is no excuse. It's still a steakhouse, meals averaged $30+ pp, in a tourist location. It's like going to a mechanic, who says I don't know what's wrong with your car. You'd have to check. Or a doctor saying: "I don't know what's wrong with you. You'd have to Google it." Now onto the food. The appetizers (e.g. bacon wrapped shrimp, game kabob) came out fast, lukewarm, as if precooked and had been sotting out or reheated for the purpose of serving. The game sampler was ok - meats were cooked medium rare but lacking well married flavors. We upgraded with the quail. If you want to spilt, it's an extra $5. The quail came covered with huckleberry jam spread, some meats were smothered with what seemed like pear jam, bbq sauce also enveloped the short rib. So if you like sweet meat, and don't have any expectations, this is a good pick. The french fries stole the show. The linguini with cajun flavor was the only decent thing there, in addition to the house salads. Overall, it was a steakhouse wannabe with Applebee's service. read more

Had high hopes but alas it was a disappointment. From the start with the Hostess to the Manager to the food quality, it was a let down. 2 stars thanks to the Waitress making the best of a below average steakhouse. Prices were not high, thank goodness. On step up from a Ponderosa or Bonanza. Cheap silverware should have tipped us off.... And to the Manager of he disagrees, your excuses that there are a lot of people and you are busy make no difference. The Customer is always right and you should not argue when your staff is rude. It's a little out of town which ok by me. ha ha I had the game sampler ($25) and enjoyed all four of the offerings. Bison short rib, elk medallion, bison sausage and blended game sausage. One of the sausages was a little spicy and quite good. The fries were amazing and the salad was good. Overall, a very good lunch and would return if in the area. Their burgers are quite good also. Came here for lunch after visiting Mount Rushmore, sadly the prime rib is only available for dinner. Ordered the shaved prime rib dip sandwich instead, and the meat had that taste of re-heated meat, so they probably use leftovers from the day before's prime rib. Some people don't notice that re-heated meat flavor but it is very distinctive to my palette. The au jus had good flavor and overpowered the old meat taste a little bit.
