So disappointed! I really wish I had checked Yelp before calling this company. They had great reviews on Google, so I thought I'd be in good hands -- but unfortunately, that was not the case. The technician who came out was polite and on time, which I appreciated. However, I had scheduled the visit to have two bathroom exhaust fans installed (I had already purchased the fans myself). When he gave me a quote of $2,900 to install the two fans, my jaw practically hit the floor. He said it would take about five hours -- that's nearly $580 per hour, and that's without even supplying the fans! Not only that, he said they'd have to schedule another appointment to come back and actually DO the work. I paid the $99 service fee for the estimate and decided to get another opinion. The next company I called installed both fans in just two hours for a total of $400. The time and proce difference was unbelievable! read more

On 9/29/25, their rep arrived at my property for a quote for the items listed below, charged me $99 for a quote of $25,000 + (plus), only verbally.... No written estimate provided. Here is the scope of work I discussed with him: ....Do you think it's worth $25,000+?? 1. Install a single power outlet into existing electrical box next to stove, turning present single power outlet into double. 2. Replace standard light switch left of stove, with owner provided light timer switch timer for backyard on 3. Install power outlet behind toilette via washroom wall. Note, drywall and plywood already removed, just cut small hole for power outlet, and connect to other power line 4 ft away on adjacent wall. 4. Front Bathroom: a. Three 4" CAN lights in front bathroom ceiling (one in shower area ceiling). Can lights should be connected to existing dimmer light switch. b. A second light switch should be connected directly to existing exhaust fan. c. install third light switch for future vanity light. d. There are two power outlets installed dead center over where sink is to be. Move these to left side so they are out of way of water. 5. Front Bedroom: a. Four, 4" can lights in front bedroom ceiling b. Verify that existing central ceiling electrical box is correct for ceiling fan, if not, replace. c. One 4" can in front bedroom closet ceiling. 6. Very disappointed the way these guys do business. Doug came out to look at my low-voltage wiring and decided he didn't like what he saw. That's OK, but I refuse to pay $5000 to fix it especially when I had the part. Then I discovered my porch light didn't work that evening when I tried to turn it on. I called back and got a big runaround because I refused to pay and they drove away and then the guy proceeded to talk over top of me and hung up on me. He refused to discuss the porch light without giving him a credit card. Definitely can't do business with a company who's got such crappy customer service. read more

Disappointed - Poor Communication and Unprofessional Behavior My recent experience with Powell Electric was very disappointing. They claim they'll call before they arrive and again after the work is done -- neither of those calls ever happened. The technician who came out, Junior, was dismissive, unprofessional, and showed no courtesy. He made a mess of a freshly painted area near my shed and didn't explain what he was doing. He pulled out old wiring and replaced conduit without a clear explanation. He also had me sign multiple times on an iPad but never provided copies of anything I signed -- which should have been sent to me immediately. For a company that advertises professionalism and clear communication, they fell short on both. I expected better service and transparency. Tech was a nice guy but after inspection said he would have to come back another day to find and fix the problem. I had a circuit that shorted out. he did inspection and said he would have to trace the line and open up the wall along the line. quote $3200 to fix And didn't even know, or tell me what was wrong. Sadly won't ever go back to Powell Electric. First time was excellent experience. This time, not even close. Wanted an outlet added to center of wall and a TV mount installed. Didn't get a ball park estimate over phone had to wait to get it in person. Tech came by, told him what I wanted. The tech then had to make a private call back to shop and said job was 1250 for the outlet and another 500+ for the TV mount installed. Return customer and military discount didn't move the needle on the price so I declined the service. I was billed 100 just for the tech to show up and give me that ridiculous quote. If you're ever going to get work done, research the estimate for the job before calling. When you do call, if they refuse to give you a ballpark number, or insist if the quote has to be done in person, ask if the quote is free. If not, hang up. Charging 100 bucks just to show up and give people a crazy quote is a scam knowing most likely someone will pass on the work. Job was fairly cut and dry not an emergency call out. Luckily I found out before they did the work and had her cancel. Fixed it for $68. These guys were trying to get paid $1000+/hr for labor. Absolutely criminal. I wish I could give 0 stars but that is not possible. I wanted to get three pendant lights replace in the kitchen (NEW LIGHTS IN PHOTOS). They charge $99 for the service call to come out. No issue there. The technician was really professional and cordial. The issue I have is with the exorbitant quote to replace just the lights - no additional wiring, or anything of that nature. Fixtures to be supplied by me. They quoted me $1,250 (SEE PHOTOS) to replace three lights!!! Needless to say I was stunned and in disbelief. For a seasoned professional, a job like that would take less than an hour. I can say that because I just decided to do the dang job myself and it took me 75 minutes. They will say they give you a 1 yr warranty to come out and replace the work if something goes wrong, but it is actually California law that they have to do that. That is not an added bonus like they lead you to believe.They also will not tell you how much parts cost or how much labor is. According to them they selll a service so they seem to create the prices randomly. Even after they had been paid and gone, they called me to ask about my experience they would not tell me how much the plug was. Maybe hoping I would think they installed some top of the line model. My mistake was not paying the $99 fee and moving on. They rely on that $99 sunk cost to lure you into overpaying for something you care about, your home . My lights were flickering, and my appliances were sporadically at half power. I called Powell Electric. Their technician Ari spent about 45 minutes checking things, but couldn't identify exactly what the problem was. He said EVERY outlet would need to be checked and a crew was needed to do that. He went outside to his truck to get a price for me. He came back to tell me the price would be $6900 to fix this problem in my 1100 square foot house! $6900?!!! He told me they had a crew who could do the work tomorrow. When I was done laughing in his face, I gave him my debit card to charge me $99 to GTFO. About 30 minutes later, I received a call from a field supervisor. I told him they couldn't even identify my problem, so I wasn't going to use them. He said "we know exactly what to do, we do this kind of work all the time". He then offered to finance the work through their partnership with Wells Fargo, which I found pretty insulting, assuming I would need their help with financing I called another electrician to check my property. Within 30 minutes, it was determined the connections on the roof needed to be replaced by So Cal Edison. Also, there was a wire broken at the pole that was visible from my backyard. Edison came out and replaced the broken wires. Everything is now working and I was told by Edison there is nothing wrong with my panel or wiring. I'm sorry I didn't call them first. DISHONEST. Powell Electric quoted an astronomical amount to resolve my problem, which turned out to be not my problem. ZERO INTERGRITY. $6900 for completely unnecessary work. Their guy didn't even get on a ladder to check the roof connection directly above my electric panel. Powell came out (for a $99 fee) and without looking into any of the sockets said it would be a big job and they would have to come back and quoted me $2,900!! Yes you read that correctly! What!?!? POWELL ELECTRIC IS MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!! I have two-foot florescent lights under my kitchen cabinets. One of the fixtures for a kitchen florescent light broke and needed repair or replacement. After seeing repeated TV commercials for Powell Electric, I called them to make the needed repair. The Powell electrician who came to my house gave me an estimate of $1,500 to replace the fixture. It seemed to me that this was a very "high" estimate so I paid him $99 for his visit and decided to look elsewhere for a less expensive option. I eventually called Joe Baune of Fastwire Electric and he replaced the fixture for $85. Needless to say, I will NOT be calling Powell Electric again. read more

First, the good: the technician Powell sent to provide me with a quote was considerate and kind. I've no complaints whatsoever about him and I thank him for his courtesy and honesty. Now, the unfortunate bad: I should have known from the way I was spoken to on my initial call that working with Powell would be unpleasant. The "hard sell" doesn't begin to cover what the gentleman who answered my call gave me. It was more like the "scare sell," which involved denigrating virtually every other licensed electrician in Los Angeles. Not directly, mind you, but indirectly, with phrases such as "Powell does things correctly" and "Powell isn't inexpensive; if you want inexpensive, use a handyman" and such like. Those are on the milder end of what he tossed my way. In fact, he did everything he could to discourage me from booking an appointment, and I should have listened. He called me "dear" more than once, and when I pointed out that one should never call a woman they don't know "dear," he didn't seem to know he shouldn't do that and blissfully continued on about how Powell is the best, how 75 years in the business don't lie, and how-- oh, yes, if we come out we charge you $99 (which would be deducted from the quote should one have work performed). The tone of the conversation was immensely condescending and not-so-subtly implied that any potential customer who questioned Powell's way of doing business was either cheap or uninformed. Ok, well, if I had a dime for every contractor who said they were the best, they did things right when others did them wrong, I'd be richer than Powell. On the day of the visit, the very cordial tech was clearly talking the talk-- which involved denigrating the work of other electricians (all licensed and with many more years of experience than he), upselling work and all the rest, but at least when I pointed out that I did not appreciate companies whose business model depended upon telling customers that all other work done was not up to "Powell standards" he ceased doing that. Now, on to the quote... the sum total of the work involved replacing broken things, but not installing new outlets or anything of that sort. No, these were maintenance issues: replacing a switch plate cover; replacing an interior low-volate entry buzzer video screen that's on the fritz (I would order the replacement screen); replacing a broken dimmer switch; replacing an incorrect outlet housing in a tiled wall (but nothing wrong with the GFCI outlet-- literally housing too big for tiled wall); replacing one outdoor bubble cover for a GFCI outlet to make it waterproof; checking and repairing wiring/switch box for one lightly flickering garage light. That was it. He suggested replacing the entire outdoor GFCI rather than replacing the bubble cover-- yet there was nothing wrong with the GFCI. When I queried this he said, "it's the way Powell does things. We take no chances." Translation to potential customers: upsell all the way! Again, I must stress how helpful this tech was, so this is not about the tech. It's about the company ethos. When he gave me the quote, I nearly fell over: it did NOT include the only thing that would keep a tech here for more than 30 minutes-- the flickering light-- and was nearly $1200. I was horrified and could only conclude that Powell did not want my business. I wrote the tech a check for $99-- he offered to get that fee waived, but I paid because I agreed to do so-- and BEFORE he provided the quote, I had to sign something that said I would pay $99 even if I didn't have work done-- so, fair dues-- and more important, as I told the tech, I felt paying the fee meant I could leave all the feedback I wished to on consumer sites. When I asked the tech why this quote was so expensive, he offered that Powell's advertising budget was millions upon millions per year. Well, that's not the customer's problem. And what does it say about their track record of retaining clientele if the advertising budget for such a sterling company means they must overcharge for small jobs? I called Powell because, yes, they come up in searches in my area and I guess that ad money is somewhat well spent. But when you treat customers like I was treated? You lose a lot of potential future business. Postscript: I waited to write this review until I received another quote from a similarly licensed and local electrical company with multiple decades in business. Their quote was not only 30% less expensive than Powell's quote, it also included the work to the garage wiring/switch box and included two more replacement bubble covers and one more replacement outlet cover. Their tech was also lovely and not once did he denigrate the work of others, try to scare me into unnecessary work or talk about how superior his company's standars were to those of other companies. Powell, take note, please. And ask your employees to stop calling women they have never met "dear." It's as offensive as your overcharging. read more
