We have used Powell Electric twice and are very pleased with the service they provided. The first time was about five years ago (oops ... a little behind on my reviews). The electricity went out in our detached garage. The technician told us we had two circuits from the house to the garage and one had gone out. He said he could switch to the other but guaranteed it would fail at some point. He gave us an estimate for breaking out the cement and running new lines, but we were just not ready to commit to that job. He did not pressure us but jokingly told us to call him when we needed it. Fast forward five years! We purchased an electric car, and the charger said it was not receiving enough electricity. Luis came out to test it and explained that we were losing the ground between the house and the garage and our only option was to break out the cement and run new lines. He came up with a great solution to add a second breaker box with six 110s - two for the dryer, two for the electric car and two free ones for lights. We then had FOUR guys show up at our house only a few days later to get the job done in a single day. They were nice and professional, and we would call Powell Electric for any future needs (although I hope we are done for a while). read more

I think their techs are paid a base hourly rate plus commission. Here is the reason why... I asked for a detail price breakdown of cost and labor. Powell Electric refused. They told me this is the way they work. Set pricing. If this simple job took 3 hours, the labor with profit rate would work out to $722/hr. His quote was for around $4,300 to replace al the wires. I had another electrician for a second opinion, and he fixed everything in less than an hour for $150.!! Zero. They came out to my 80 year old parents modest 3/2 house in South LA. Had them sign docs and picked up a check for $5000. One of the docs title Let's Discuss Your Options is a form that "encourages" them to discuss the solutions with a friend or relative which no family member saw until the job was completed and paid for in the amount of $14,000. The area where my parents live can not support Beverly Hills prices! They clearly were taken advantage of. BBB showed an identical complaint involving the elderly, but redacted the costs. Their rep then comes out and says "he" can complete an insurance claim for them and probably get them $10,000 back. A check with the insurance proved that would not happen. The average cost for a total rewire in Los Angeles is $3000-$7000. This includes a new circuit panel, switches, plugs and even light fixtures by some companies. My parents had an electrical panel, a single circuit issue and a couple other minor issues resolved, not a TOTAL REWIRE. The rep stated a total rewire by their company would cost $40-$50,000! Insist on reviewing you elderly parents contracts so they don't get taken advantage of. I thought the Attorney General would investigate price gouging but they referred me to the Contractors State Licensing Board. To date, they have not done a thing. Senior citizens in South LA beware. I had to cancel a plumber from a $2000 job that only required me to tighten up a hose and remove a little stucco from around a clean out access. Look out for your elderly parents. The system and/or consumer protection entities apparently don't see this as a problem yet! read more

I can't grade this company on their work. What I can say is their so called specials are a scam. I called these guys to have them provide a quote for installing 2 bathroom lights (which I already purchased) at existing light locations. I got a quote for $600 which of course I turned down and then had to pay the $79 special for the pleasure of an over priced quote. Take this as a warning. Their special is the minimum you will pay to deal with this company. The special had nothing to do with $$ the quote I was provided other than the quote fee. As a side note, I don't have a problem with companies charging an estimate fee. $79 is just over the top for a process that took the guy less than 5 minutes. I don't think they really want to do any real work, just take in estimate money which is faster and probably more lucrative. Where to begin, I can't say enough good things about Powell Electric, their customer service representatives, their management and most importantly their Electricians. I live in a single family home in Westlake Village, CA. 5 years ago, Powell installed a dedicated electrical line for my pool. Over time one of the wires corroded underground causing the pool to lose power and shutting down the pump. The work was warrantied for 1 year as with most/all Electrical work these days. I spoke with Sam, one of the field managers at Powell and he was fantastic, without question he sent out his team the very next day and fixed the issue at no charge. They went above and beyond by replacing all the wires to ensure this wouldn't happen again. In this day and age, customer service at this level is rare and hard to come by. But when I saw the estimate for a 50 amp circuit, with 200' of conduit and a spa hook-up come in at $11,990, I thought of Powell Electric's TV commercial, call Powell Electric we'll "screw you" in a flash! Best part was after I rejected the offer I was offered one complimentary light bulb to compensate for the $99 fee I paid for this visit. I will say the service man was very nice and thorough, but I suspect at these prices, these guys do more $99 estimates than work itself. Don't waste your time, or money. The request was to install 3 ceiling fans and a light fixture. The technician went to his van and within minutes returned with an estimate of $3,200, he stated this with a straight face. On 5/27/2020, this company come to my rental property and gave me a quotation for 17020 for false claims which under misleading statements of my electric system will fry people, will electrocute people, totally not per building code and so on. I have a general B license and am able to tell their false claims. The exactly same job was later quoted by two licensed electrician for 800 and 1100. Powell installed outdoor party lighting a few years ago - part of the installation was held up by 2 metal pipes attached to my wooden deck. The recent wind made 1 of the poles detach from the deck and the wires and lights were hanging. The pole was attached with 2 screws and a clasp around pole - I called them to see if this could be reattached and they told me they would send someone out "free of charge" since they had originally installed them and they had my original contract on file. They send out a technician and when he reviewed the work, said he would need another person to hold up the pole while he attached the 2 screws. I told him I could hold up the pole but he said that he had to have someone from the company assist and called his office. He then advised me that the charge would be $499 to reattach the pole. This is totally outrageous and I believe they knew that additional charges would be forthcoming even before they sent someone out. I will never use this company and will warn anyone searching for an electrician to be aware of their outrageous charges and never to hire them read more

March 13, 2020: What a ripoff! I guess there's not a zero star option to write a review. We have 2 doors on opposite sides of our bathroom but the light switches are only on one side of the bathroom. So I was looking to add a switch to the other side. It was $78 just to have them come out. Then the technician tells me it will be "750" to install. I asked him "$7.50?" and he replied, "no, $750." I told him that seemed like a lot and asked how much the parts are and how long would the installation take. He said the parts cost less than $100 but I could buy those myself and then it would only be $399 for the installation. And it would take about 10 minutes to install. So they're marking up $100 worth of parts to $350!! And then charging $399 for 10 minutes worth of work! That's insane!!!! I'll be looking for the part online and installing them either myself or hiring a handyman. I'm sure it won't cost that much to have a handyman install it if I can't figure it out myself. ================================================== March 18, 2020 Update: The parts offered by Powell Electric were not wifi enabled. The electrician came and changed the fuses in the panel. It took about two hours or less and it cost $1200. I agreed to the price because I was desperate to get my electricity back on. However, I thought $1200 was extreme and I wrote a review saying the work was good as far as I know but it was too costly. Powell electric responded to my review saying get in touch with them. I got in touch with them and after several minutes on the phone, the supervisor finally said he would do me a favor and refund $100. Our electricity was cutting in and out so we called Powell Electric for assistance from seeing all their TV ad. Big Mistake!!! It was very easy to book an appt. Technician Mariano Reyes showed up between the appt window as promised. He jiggled the fuse box and looked like he had tightened a single wire. However, that single wire was already tighten by myself the day before. After less than ten minutes and $99 dollars later for basically doing nothing, he had the nerve to give us an estimate $1,500 to help in the following: (PPSP Create plot plan, single line diagram and load schedule for installation of a new service upgrade. Coordinate with service planner and power company). Basically $1,500 for me to call SC Edison to come out to upgrade our electric meter, which had nothing to do with the electricity cutting in and out. To Long story short, do not call these crooks for service. To add insult to injury, he gave me a soft quote of $40K!!! to update our fuze box. AN INCREDIBLE RIP OFF, A FRAUD and less than honest My electrician was booked for a couple weeks and I had guests coming that I wanted to have work done before they arrived, another local electrician Penna Electric didn't return my call so I gave them a shot and it was outrageous beyond belief. I was quoted the following prices for the following work on 11-5-19 Replace 7 foot LED ribbon light, existing driver to remain $499 The LED strip lights are $15 max for a whole kit, it would take 1/2 hour max (it was 10 minutes the first time) to do it so their price equates to over $900 an hour if it did take 30 minutes Install CUSTOMER SUPPLIED ($199 + tax my cost) Ring Camera, install weatherproof box and mount fixture but will not set it up $399. This was to replace and already installed (but faulty) camera that is already hardwired so it's just replacing it, 5 minutes maybe without setup so I would have to pay more for the setup that takes from experience maybe 15 minutes to make sure it works and it's connected to the wifi and is covering the right area and it's useless without being setup. The camera is already waterproof no box needed. If it's 10 minutes that would be almost $2400 an hour Replace 3 way LED dimmer switch $399 First off the switch still works, it costs about $30, the wiring is there so it's 5 minutes max but even if it's 10 minutes that's again $2400 an hour Even if it took them 1 hour each for each job that's about $450 per hour Realistically probably less than 1 hour max for all, but 1 hour comes to $1247 I will followup with real costs and time taken from my electrician after he comes on 11-8 read more
