Salt and pepper squid and seafood fish maw soup
    Kristi P.

I was excited to come here for the first time since COVID. Things have changed. It has been remodeled and apparently changed ownership. The decor has been updated to a more simple, clean aesthetic (no more carpet, banquet decorations, or chandeliers). Many of the menu offerings are the same, but sadly, were not prepared the same way as before. Seafood fish maw soup: The fish maw was plentiful, but seemed undercooked. It was more chewy/gummy than crunchy. Salt and pepper squid: the squid and batter was very thin and not crispy. The onions had good flavor. Enoki mushroom and tofu hotpot: This was good, and arrived bubbling in its pot. It literally only had enoki and shiitake mushrooms, and tofu. Usually, there are more veggies too. Hot tea and white rice are included.

Still the best canto restaurant in town, with a legacy of about 30+ years. You can order items individually, or in a big party order one of the banquet sets (range $150-$246). Review of my favorites: -Peking Pork. Tried and true classic sweet and sour dish, always good with rice -Salt and Pepper Squid. A favorite, with the combination of fried, crunchy, and chewy. -Crab Special. Great flavors. You can eat the head too! Ask for gloves. -Onion and Oil chicken. Great chicken pieces, well flavored and plenty for the party -Steamed fish. Eat with the garnishes and sauce. Don't flip the fish! Remove the bone. If it's busy (usually is) you will need TJ do street parking. Unfortunately like many restaurants in Portland, Powell's got their windows smashed recently and had to board it up. A sad sight, but it did not affect the employees at all.

Food portion was big! Environment is average among other similar restaurants I visited in other cities. Service was good.

I've been coming here since I was a little girl and my mom says she's been coming here since a little girl too This is my all time favorite Chinese food place ! It always has the best food that gets served up quick !

Seafood at restaurant is way overpriced so it is recommended that you walk less than 5 mins to pick your own seafood from seafood market next door and bring it over to the restaurant to have them cook for you ($15 service fee), which is still better pricing than order seafood at the restaurant. Speed to deliver food was fast! Portion of food was good for its price. Cleanliness was ok on average as you would expect in a typical Asian restaurant.

This restaurant never fails you!Service has always been consistent, the dishes are authentic, price is reasonable, the portions are generous, and they serve food quickly.

This place has been around for a long long time and I had driven past it a million times. But I never came in until last year when they hired a new chef and I made like 10 visits in 2 months. Personally, I prefer this place over HK, Wong's and other Chinese places. Parking can be difficult. I recommend parking on the street so you don't have to move your car or ask people to move theirs. The building is a bit old and easy to get overlooked if you drive too fast. There is a ramp on the way to restrooms and that area can be slippery. (Watch your steps) Ventilation is not the best and your clothes will smell if you stay inside for too long. That's it for the cons. I'd say the food is good and I could tell which ones were cooked by the new chef and which ones were not. Lots of experienced Chinese chefs here tend to cook things in a certain way such as using lots of oil. The way the new chef cooks is really refreshing and more authentic in terms of Chinese food. I hope he can keep his style and doesn't get "Portlandized" so quickly. I usually order 2-3 specials if I come with 1-2 people. However, they changed their menu recently and it has fewer specials now, and the new specials are not as affordable as the old ones. The old specials can still be found on other pages and are priced reasonably. Eggplant pot is my personal favorite. Good customer service. I recommend this place. In fact, I am going again in 1 hour.

Even though it's a small quaint restaurant, but their Asian cuisine is excellent and not overpriced like other restaurants.

    Are reservations needed?

Not needed unless you're planning on going during the Lunar New Year in the spring or possibly Christmas night. Service is very efficient, so you're almost always able to get a table when you arrive.

You can absolutely smell the fish and vinegar as soon as you walk through the door, which I think gives the place a very homey pub feel. I ordered a spiked peach Arnold Palmer, which I enjoyed (and it was pleasantly strong) and a glass of the house white, which was good for the price. Our server was very fast and attentive. To eat I got the tomato soup with a grilled cheese, which was absolutely fantastic. The soup was so creamy and flavorful, and I cannot imagine a better meal after spending all day walking outside in the rain. The fries were super crispy and I liked the batter. My partner and I shared some of their breadsticks, which were deliciously baked (fresh!) and came with a super refreshing basil crema and a nice tomato-y dip. Wonderful all. My partner ordered fish and chips, and was surprised to find that it is one large fillet of fish, not multiple pieces like you would typically expect. He said the fish was fine, but a little tough. Overall, a wonderful experience. I definitely hope to return. I highly recommend this place as a refuge during the cold winter months!

But it's always a nice spot to hang out and chat with friends, you can get seated quicker if you enter through Over & Out, which basically functions as an extension of the main Observatory, with it's own bar and pool tables.

We knew what we'd come for (lobstah!), and assumed we'd order once we made it up to the counter. However, as we waited our turn, one of the employees started shouting at us from behind a cooler. Between the distance, white noise and a slight language barrier, we weren't sure why we were being yelled at. Eventually the woman at the register clarified what we needed: one Maine lobster. How many lbs? We said two. The woman who had shouted at us confirmed our order from her co-worker, and returned with two, 2-lb Maine lobsters: a slight miscommunication. She reached into the bag, grabbed the luckier of the two, and put him back in the tank. The less fortunate one returned home with us, to satisfy my wife's pregnancy cravings! The employees could be a bit friendlier, but the seafood couldn't be much fresher!

Both were flavorful and filling, and satisfied our craving just right. The cornbread served with our meals was also super tasty, with a light and sweet flavor that complimented our dishes well. Our waitress was very kind and attentive and made an effort to ensure our dining experience was a pleasant one. She offered to get us a to-go container for the seafood broth before we even asked, and I'm so glad we took her up on that offer because that broth made a great second meal the next day! We visited during a time they weren't particularly busy (about 4pm), but even then a few tables were occupied. It's clear that this location has more activity into the evening, especially since there is a full bar and they don't close until 10pm most days. We were also pretty happy with the price, considering we've paid more for less food at other restaurants offering seafood boils. We'll definitely be eating here again!

Because it's Mardi Gras, I was hoping for some Jambalaya or Gumbo of some of that good New Orleans stuff. With that said, before heading home, we searched online where nearby we could go for take out. We did have another market, Shell Gas station not far from where we started, but their Jambalaya was like 'soy sauce colored rice'. THAT's not what I'm craving for! We found one further, and they have Seafood Gumbo, so we drove there. I thought it would take faster than 15 mins. but first we have to wait until the waitress, who told us to seat & wait, she'll give us the menu, (we just found the menu from their website), she wasn't free for a long time. The Seafood Gumbo order came with corn bread and rice. I've eaten Southern & Northern style foods in the past, but the cornbread was probably one of the worst I've eaten! Dry like the Sahara Desert, and old! I took one look at the Gumbo, and I wasn't sure what it was on top, it freaked me out! It was probably one of the largest clam, but I like mine in bite size pieces, not one as big as my tongue. For awhile there, I thought it was a body of a squid, but I like mine toasted, crispy or fried. There's shrimp, and clams with shells. The taste was so-so, hubby did liked it, so he'll eat all of my portion. I did took a couple of spoonfuls, but that's it! (For now, I'm done craving for Gumbo soup!, Corn bread, too!) The staff that was helping us, was cordial, so I give her points for that!
