Came here with Dan after looking for open restaurants at lunch time on that part of Powell. Dan gives his meal four stars, my meal gets three. Dan opted for fish Schezuan style and got a healthy plate full of breaded fish along with peppers and a bowl of rice. He was pleased and pretty much cleaned his plate. I went for the pan-fried noodles Singapore style and was given a mound of rice noodles with a few shrimp and slivers of barbequed pork, no vegetables to speak of outside of a few bean sprouts, all dusted with curry powder. The dish was dry and lacked both sauce and flavor, but was a bit more tasty with soy sauce. Dan's pleasure with his choice brings the two-star Singapore noodle dish and my review up to three stars. So back to Kenny's. Google said they were open. Sign on door saying on vacation this week. Closest Asian place was China Wind, that I'd gone to 10 or more years ago, and it was pretty mediocre Chinese American, but cheap and filling lunch specials. Things Change! No lunch special but a full menu with a number of interesting items. I got the fried fish in Szechuan sauce. Came with bright, nearly raw orange peppers, onion and bits of hot peppers. Tip--stir the food around as the sauce sinks/ Tony got a gigantic mound of curried "yard long noodles" which i don't think these were as they were quite thin and a little dry (stirring helped here too.) We had a big party and went to this restaurant after finding out it's the only Asian restaurant with family style dining that was still open late. Most of the other Asian restaurants around 82nd close at 10 but this place opened to 11:30. Dishes had barely any meat/seafood and were mainly filled with veggies even though each dish was around $18. I'd say it was 20% protein 80% veggies. Everything was really salty too. The main reason for the low rating for this restaurant, however, is the cleanliness. The glass circle was really sticky, our table was near the door that was kept open which meant cold air kept coming through. The worst part was throughout our visit, there were multiple smokers who smoked right next to the door so the smell of cigarettes kept coming in, to the point where it was hard for me to breathe. We had to get up ourselves to shut the door multiple times but it keeps getting opened. The employees did not seem bothered as they didn't do anything about it. It was really uncomfortable inhaling the smoke, which spanned from when we were ordering all the way to when we finished our meal. The only pro to this place is that they are open late and our server was patient and helpful when it came time to order. If you're in the area and are craving Chinese food, I recommend you go elsewhere as there are much better options nearby. read more

My family and I came in late at night for dinner. We got combination G, the salt and pepper squid and the house special noodles. First off, the place looks a little rundown, but I learned quickly not to judge a place by its exterior. The squid was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Looks somewhat run down from the outside (it could use some sprucing up on the exterior, maybe a paint job) but the inside is decent enough. It's not extensively decorated like some restaurants can be but clean. I got the sweet & sour chicken dinner special for $16.95. The portion size is huge - at least 3 meals for me. My meal was yummy. The dinner specials (there's nine options) typically come with the meat choice, fried rice, 3 pieces BBQ pork, 2 (little) fried shrimps, egg roll, and side of soup. Jasmine tea on the house. The other selections on the menu are pretty vast. They have a lot of options here. You are sure to find something interesting. I recommend this place. Perhaps it's not as popular as other Cinese restaurants in the area, but definately worth going to. Disappointed. Decided to come here for a family dinner on a Tuesday (a table for 6 please). Ordered six dishes (1. bitter melon, 2. sweet & sour pork, 3. whole chicken, 4. sautéed beef with scallion, 5. stir-fry squid mix, 6. fish filet with assorted vegetables). Very basic dishes, however, we were really disappointed. We did not like the flavors at all, "meh" on quality, and a thumb down on prensentation. Not to mention the food took a long time for it to come out. Ordered, then waited for at least 25+ minutes before the first dish showed up, and roughly about another 10+ minute wait in-between each dish. As you can imagine, we were dissatisfy with our first experience here. Place is also small and felt cramped. Pricing is a bit high as well. The only thing going for them was probably the friendly staff, other than that... not impressed. I will not be back. read more

I won't come here again. Came here with a large party and there a automatic gratuity of 25%. At the table I was at, our tea and water never got refilled. The food was lackluster and overpriced for what it is. The dirty cup I received didn't help at all. It's been interesting to see the changes to this place over the years. I always remembered this place as Than Thanh, one of many Vietnamese restaurants in the now massive Viet scene in Portland. It eventually became Thai Viet, a condensed semi-mediocre version of it's predecessor, before reincarnating into the China Wind Bookstore which remained for years until the current owners stepped in to drop "bookstore" and add "restaurant" to it converting a former magazine / book shop into a full fledged, Portland divey Chinese restaurant. It really is divey, but not dirty (yes, there is a difference!). Decor is certainly on the minimum and the place can't fit more than a few small groups of people. The carpet makes me feel like I'm eating in someone's home, which for most situations is a good thing. It seems the staff is primarily Toisanese (Mando: Taishan), a southern Chinese group of people credited with being the first wave of Chinese immigrants in America. There are none too few Toisan folks roaming the joint, an occurrence that sticks out in Portland where the Chino make up is less variable as they are in larger cities. When it gets too busy, the place is slow to clean up, which only means they're understaffed. There is always one main lady waitress and a helper, all mild mannered and very friendly. Even though I've been here a handful of times, I can't say the food is all that earth shattering. It's more of a neighborhood joint than it is a restaurant one would go out of their way to eat at. The menu, like many others in Portland, is an even split when it comes to American-Chinese and southern Chinese dishes. Often times we'll have to ask for things that aren't even printed. Where are the Chinese only "menu" in the form of scribbled characters and various colored papers? That wall looks pretty bare. The dishes that have been consistent enough to eat on repeat: Jiu pai chow mein (Mando: zhu pai chao mian), an extra "seafoody" version of hoi sein chow mein (pan fried seafood noodle), which just means an extra scallop or squid made it in the pile of seafood over a crispy and often times greasy layer of egg noodles. Fu gua ngau yuk (Mando: ku gua niu rou) or bitter melon beef, usually has tender pieces of beef all fairly well cut and chewy minus the toughness. Bitter melon is an acquired taste not for the gringo palate, but is quite tasty in this dish. Jiu yim yau yu (Mando: Jiu yan xin yu) or salt pepper squid, is not my favorite but folks who often dine with me enjoy this dish. Sometimes it feels a little too bready but a solid job otherwise. Choy yu ban kau (Mando: cai yu ban qiu) or sauteed flounder with veggies, is sometimes often served with tofu, which soaks up most of the flavor, as opposed to the flounder fish, which is sometimes too salty not to add rice. In the end, China Wind is a solid Chinese restaurant on this side of Portland. It may not be the best, but it's certainly among the most reasonable price wise. And for many folks, that's usually more than enough. read more

I've been here so many times and this is my true experience. The food is not expensive but the quality is not consistent. They probably bought tons of salt when it was on sale so they put a lot in every dish as if the salt is free. Most of the dishes taste super salty even though you tell them to put less salt because it was too salty last time, but everything still turns out to be salty. Secondly, the tablewares are not clean and I've found leftover in the tea cup several times. I have to use hot tea to rinse the cup and bowl first then clean them with tissues every time I come here. Last but not least (actually the worst part) is their service. Everyone is good except for that lady with a pony tail. First, the way she ties her hair can easily get her hair into the food. She also sucks at serving people. For instance, she can't pour soup properly. There was one time, she filled up the soup spoon with soup and half of the soup dropped on the table before anything reached the bowl, and she did that to everyone on the table that night. She acts so cockily like she is the god. Every time I see her I give less tip. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner before work on 4/22/11 we ordered quite a bit of food :-) my husband had a tofu clay pot, I had the lamb clay pot which came the chinese style, we shared salt and pepper squid and an appetizer combo. Now let me begin by saying the salt and pepper squid were whole which was pretty cool, they were lightly breaded and fried to a nice crispyness, my first bite my eyes got big and I swear I saw HEAVEN they were sooooo good, they weren't oily like at a lot of places, or overly salty, they were cooked just right it was the B.F.D. The appetizer came with pot stickers, spring rolls, and prawns. Everything for the appetizer was cooked to perfection it was so delicious. I didn't try my husbands tofu clay pot but it looked as if he really enjoyed it :-) My lamb clay pot was the bomb huge chunks of meat, the fatty pieces of skin, and tripe. Yes I said it correctly this is the chinese style, our server even said that M you know this is the chinese style" and I was like " Yes, I have had it before its really good" and in fact it was better then good it was wonderful, I know a lot of people are put off by tripe or something different but I was raised to try new things and I am glad I did this was a superb dish that I really would recommend to anyone. Before our meal we were brought tea and water which is awesome!! After we had ordered we were brought some of the best soups ever, my husband had the hot and sour I had the egg drope and that soup oh my god, it was so delicious full of yummy flavors and textures :-) I would highly recommend coming here, the portions are huge and the prices really aren't that bad. read more

I think I've prefaced enough of my reviews with the "gwailo" caveat, so we'll skip that this time. This is my current favorite spot for 3 items: steamed pork with salted fish, lamb clay pot, and steamed chicken. The lamb pots that I've had elsewhere never really impressed me. This one is dripping with a succulent sauce, and on top of that, the meat is very rich in flavor. The salted fish pork steaming dish thingy is lovely and very pungent. It occurs to me that some people may not consider pungent a good thing with food. I do. Be forewarned. The steamed chicken is also much different from what I've had at other places. Usually I get something that loosely translates to "white cut chicken". It's always good, but I was told to try this places steamed chicken, and I'm glad I did. Same idea, but much different texture to the skin, and strangely, much more flavor than I expected out of a steamed dish (rather than poached). All in all, they were very friendly and, as usual, amazed to see me eating all that very not-american chinese food. read more

I used to eat here when it was the Thai/Vietnamese restaurant. It was great then...And I still think the food is pretty rockin! I had the ginger squid. It was delicious! The hot and sour soup was some of the best I've had! Even the egg flower soup was tasty! My mom ordered the honey walnut prawns (not too Asian!?!?!) but that dish was yummy and I am generally NOT a fan of that dish. I asked the waitress what the Congee was. She was kind enough to tell me that it was "authentic Chinese" and I would NOT enjoy it! It made me laugh as I can eat pretty much ASIAN of ANY KIND and enjoy it! I've always been a fan of this place. The food is fresh, packed with taste and the portions are really good for the money that you pay for. This restaurant is geared towards more of the Chinese community so it's more authentic than Chinese American restaurants in which whole chickens and fish are not part of the menu. China Wind caters to the Chinese community but they do a pretty good business for all ethnic people. But they do have combo plates...so a Authentic Chinese American restaurant! I would recommend any of their tofu dishes or clay pots. It's really good and makes you wish that the pots are bottomless. None of the dishes I had were salty and the seasoning was just right. Everything is fresh! The place itself is a dive. The carpet should be replaced, this place caters to more of the big parties. Most of the big tables fit 10 people. On some nights most of the round tables are packed with families so it can get real busy. Put this place on your list of places to try. read more

Food has mostly been good and decent quantity for the price, but the wait times aren't good. We were repeat customers about once a month and I'm a bit recognizable so think they know who I am when I come in. The last time was there on July 3, waiting over an hour after giving in our order, and eventually after some nudges just decided to give up and walk out without our meal which is a first for me. Was only 2 routine off the menu dishes and soup, and didn't even get the soup in an hour. Can't say they were particularly busy, or that others were doing much better, only saw 4 tables there with people and some take out activity. Probably just going somewhere else in the future. We had been here some years ago with friends and decided to try it again. It hadn't really changed since our last visit. It could stand some "sprucing-up" as it looks a bit run-down. The Menu is quite extensive and you get very large portions. We wanted to try a number of things and ended up ordering WAY TOO MUCH. We were able to take the leftovers home but be advised the portion size is not the tiny portion like P.F. Changs for instance. The Service is good. The older lady who waited on us was friendly enough. We did experience what other reviews said in some of the dishes not being as good as others.
